Welcome to the Detroit Opera House.
On behalf of Michigan Opera Theatre, welcome to your opera house I am delighted that you could join us, and hope that this will be one of many visits to the Detroit Opera House - the latest addition to Detroit's celebrated Theatre District.
Although the Detroit Opera House remams a masterpiece m progress, I invite you to experience the grandeur of this classic American theater in its nearlY ' completed state. From the grand staircase, adorned by a stunning 3,000 piece crystal chandelier, to the hand-crafted proscenium arch, much of the original 1922 elaborate interior design has been lovingly and faithfully restored to its former splendor. The newly constructed 75,000 square foot stage (among the largest in North America), state-of-the-art orchestra pit (large enough to nearly 100 musicians), and rich acoustical and visual properties make this grand old theater one of the most exciting and coveted in the world.
The grand opening of the Detroit Opera House last April was the realization of a twenty-five year dream to provide our community with a world-class facility ideally suited for grand opera and ballet. We are pleased that this magnificent theatre can also play host to the most spectacular national touring productions available. In years to come, hundreds of productions will grace our stage. Through its diversity and uniqueness of programming, the Detroit Opera House will greatly enhance the cultural fabric of our city and Southeastern Michigan . This glorious theater would not be possible if it were not for the support of hundreds of individuals, like yourself, committed to the dream of a world-class opera house for Detroit. While the Detroit Opera House is now functioning, or operable, the fund-raising process continues. are many ways to get involved! Whether you underwrite a seat, buy a brick or make a contribution (please see page 11), you are ensuring the completion of your opera house, a place to enjoy the best in opera, dance, musical theater, variety programming and special events.
I hope you enjoy your visit at the Detroit Opera House, and look forward to hosting you in years to come
Enjoy the show!

It these walls could only talk
For nearly eight decades this grand old palace has enriched the lives of our great city and surrounding communities. Born in the midst of Detroit's most splendid period, this grand palace has survived world wars, economic booms and recessions, social turmoil and the renaissance of our cultural institutions. And, in the midst of it all, she has flourished and faded, been loved and neglected, deteriorated and been lovingly resrored.
Historically, Michigan Opera Theatre's new home is Detroit's fifth opera house. Previous venues intended for staging opera in Detroit included a "Detroit Opera House" from 1869-1963 at Kennedy Square; "Whitney Grand Opera House" from 1875-1897 located at Fort Street and Shelby; "The New c.]. Whitney Opera House" (renamed Garrick Theater) located on Griswo ld and Michigan- Avenues; and the "New Detroit Opera House" from 1886-1928 located at Randolph and Monroe streets.
Here is the story of your Detroit Opera House:
SETTING THE SCENE
Located on the corners of Broadway and Madison at Grand Circus Park, the theater was originally opened January 12, 1922 as the Capitol Theater. At the time of its gala premiere, the 4,250-seat theater was claimed ro be the fifth largest in the world. The theater was the first in a series of palatial vaudevi ll e and moving picture houses built
in the Grand Circus Park area in the 1920's. Designed by renowned Detroit architect C. Howard Crane, whose genius for theater design took him ro cities around the nation, the building was constructed with superb acoustics and in the style of the grand European opera houses. Crane also designed such Detroit landmarks as the Fox Theatre, Gem Theatre and the acoustically perfect Orchestra Hall.
The Capi tol Theater was resplendently decorated in the Italian Renaissance style with lavish Tiffany chandeliers, frescoes, brass fixtures, marble stairways and drinking fountains. Rich rose-red Italian damask was used for the main stage curtain and draperies throughout the house. Many of these features are present today in the Detroit Opera House.
In the fall of 1929, the Capitol Theater became the Paramount The Capitol Theater 1922. Theater and, in 1934, was renamed the Broadway Capitol Theater. Within the first few decades, the grand theater hosted the likes of Will Rogers, Louis Armstrong, Betty Hutron, Guy Lombardo and Duke Ellington; and later Gale Storm, Sa l Mineo and many of the rock and roll stars of the 1950's.
After several years of near decay, the theater underwent a minor restoration in 1960. The renamed and reconfigured 3,367 -seat Grand Circus Theater became a movie house and cinema; liv e entertainment was no longer presented on her stage. The Grand Circus

Theatre closed its doors in 1978, and reopened under the same name in 1981. From 1981 to 1985, the theater ran intermittently, presenting a myriad of entertainment, from such mainstream artists as Ray Charles and Roy Orbison to an alternative rock series entitled "Grand Circus Live." The 1922 palace closed its doors for the last time in November of 1985, after a sma ll fire. The theater would be tragically neglected for three years, until the nomadic Michigan Opera Theatre met its destiny.

ENTER MICHIGAN OPERA THEATRE
Michigan Opera Theatre, cited by the Detroit media as "one of the city's cultura l jewels," is the State of Michigan's premiere opera company serving as a state-wide cultural resource committed to producing the very best professional" productions from the grand opera, operetta, musical theater and ballm repertory. Founded and directed by internationally recognized impresario Dr. David DiChiera, Michigan Opera Theatre is now recognized as one ' of the nation's most 'successful opera companies.
Since its inception in 1971, Michigan Opera Theatre has ca ll ed three different theaters "home" prior to the opening of the Detroit Opera House. In 1971 the Company became the cata lyst for the revitalization of Detroit's ce lebra ted Theater District, as it re-opened the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. Music Hall was home until 1985. In 1985, the company, in an effort to accommodate its growing audience and increased production needs, began performing the fall season in the Fis her Theatre (ptimarily a Broadway style house seating 2,100), and the spring season in the 4,000 seat Masonic Temple Theatre. While the move to the Fisher and Masonic Temple Theatres achieved a temporary so lution to the Company's need for greater technical resources, seating capacity and audience amenities, it became clear that the future of Michigan Opera Theatre as a permanent resource for the city and state would be jeopardized if the company could not control its own destiny. Michigan Opera Theatre, under the leadership of David DiChiera and the Board of Directors, set out to find a building ideally suited for grand opera and ballet productions.
In the late 1980's the company serious l y considered renovating the State Theater located next to the newly renovated Fox Theatre, though this arrangement was not considered ideal becau se the facility was not
for sale, on l y rent. While in the midst of these discussions, the Grand Circus Theater became availab le for purchase. David DiChiera considered the magnificent structure ideal for its "opera house" style interior and the possibilities for building a new stagehouse. He brought in facilities experts to substantiate its structural soundness , acoustica l excellence and technical capabilities when updated . On December 31 of 1987, the ball got rolling as the company se c ur ed the first parcel in the Grand Circus Theater block as the company's future performance site.
In 1990, the capital campaign to raise funds for the project began. With the support of several prominent business leaders Michigan Opera Theatre ran a successful campaign ro name the private grand tier boxes, enabling the Company to acquire the remaining parce ls of the Grand Circus Theater block (this included three parking lots, the theater proper and the Roberrs Fur Building). In the fall of 1991 during a pre-concert press conference in the Grand Circus Theater, Luciano Pavarotri made his memorable promise to rerum to open the Detroit Opera House, bringing the building project to the attention of the public at large.
In the Spring of 199 3, the wrecking ball came down on the Roberts Fur Building on the Grand Circ us Theater block, making way for a new 75,000 square foot stage house. With the $1.25 million Kresge Challenge grant, the acquisition of the la st of the six parcels in the Grand Circus Theater block, and th e 1994 Opera Ball inside the unrestored auditorium before a crowd of many who had never before seen the interior, th e project gained incredible momentum Construction began in earnest on the stage house that same summer. The monumental task before Michigan Opera Theatre, the renovation of the Detroit Opera House, has been considered a key component for the economic, culrura l and CIVIC revitali zation of Detroit.
AN OPERA HOUSE FOR DETROIT
On April .21 of 1996, a date that coincided with the Company 's twenty-fifth season, David DiChiera 's dream became a reality as the Detroit Opera House was declared "open and ready for music " with an inaugura l gala concert, fearuring history

making performances by Luciano Pavarotti and a srar-studded cast of world-renowned artists. All eyes were on Detroit , as the city ce lebrated the opening of it 's very own opera house - a world-class theat e r for the entertainment of ge nerations to come.
TO BE CONT INUED
With the comp letion of Phase I (the completion of the auditorium and patron service areas) scheduled for late fall of 1996, the construction and fund raising process continues. Future phases of the project include the construction and completion of an educationa l resource center, an expanded glass-enclosed lobby and an outdoor p laza. Adjoining office rowers are undergoing adaptive reuse into dressing rooms, patron service areas and offices fot Michigan Opera Theatre's administration, production and community outreach departments.
In June of 1996 David DiChiera announced that the Detroit Opera House , under the management of Michigan Opera Theatre, would , in addition to grand opera and ballet , play host to musical theater, variety programming and special events. In a unique co ll aboration between Michigan Opera Theatre, the Nederlander Family and Mi c hael and Marian Ilitch's Olympia Entertainment, the Detroit Opera House will serve all sectors of the community with more than two hundred performances in its first full season. It is estimated that the entertainment population for the Detroit Opera House exceeds 9 million households . Michigan Opera Theatre has lovingly dubbed the 1996-1997 season at the Detroit Opera House "Building On A Dream." It is our sincere hope that you, your families and generations to come enjoy the Detroit Opera House, and we encourage you to help us build on the dream
ENJOY!

THE DETROIT OPERA HOUSE
On April 21, 1996 , the doors to the beautifully restored Detroit Opera House were open to the public for the Inaugural Gala. Luciano Pavarotti and a host of other operatic luminaries performed in a Grand Concert to celebrate the occasion Glorious musi c filled the theater and delighted the 2,700 people in attendance. It was truly a magnificent moment in Michi g an . Opera Theatre 's twenty-five year history of excellence in the metropolitan Detroit community. Finally, MOT has its own home - and it is a wonderful home.
, Dr. David DiChiera, General Director, always knew that to make MOT a permanent resour ce for the city and state, the opera company would need to have a world-class facility to accommodate all of its activities. In 1989, MOT acquired the Grand Circus Theatre, and seven years later the dream became a reality. More than 1,500 donors have contributed $20 million to help open the doors - individuals, corporations and foundations. They have underwritten all of the grand tier boxes and some of the lobbies, chandeliers, individual seats and bricks. However, more work needs to be done and there are many more naming opportunities. We need to raise an additional $ 1 3 million to complete the first phase of this project which includes finishing the elevator tower, lobbies and public lounge.
To help raise these funds, we have a lofty goal, but an achievable one - to name every seat in the theater We invite you to help us build on our dream and put your name on a seat If you look around the theater, you will notice that some seats have gold ribbons on th em designating the seat underwriters. One d ay we hope to have permanent brass name plaques on every seat.
Seats can be named from $ 500 to $ 25,000 and gifts of $1,000 or more can be fulfilled up to a five year period So, please join us in the campaign to complete the restoration of the Detroit Opera House. For more information on how you can get involved , call the Development Department at 313-874-7850.

ACT I
In a square in Seville, townspeople and soldiers relax in the sun. A pretty country girl, Micaela, comes in looking for her sweetheart, Corporal Don Jose; an officer, Morales, tells her Jose will be there later, and she leaves. As the guard is changed, a band of -children parade around, imitating the soldiers ("Avec la grande montante") , whose number now includes Jose. To the sound of the noon bell, girls from the nearby cigarette factory wander in to smoke and chat, as passers-by look on in fascination ("Dans l'air"). Carmen enters last, flirting, joking and explaining her philosophy of life; love is a wild bird that cannpt be tamed (Habanera: "L'amour est un oisea!, rebelle"). Jose sits apart, sullen and distracted; drawn by his indifference, Carmen tosses him a flower as the work bell calls the girls back. The square grows quiet, and Micaela returns to give Jose news of his mother ("Parle-moi de ma mere"). No sooner has she left than a disturbance is heard in the factory; Carmen is involved in a fight, and the girls run out arguing over who started it. Captain Zuniga orders Jose to arrest Carmen, but she resists their questions with brazen nonchalance. Her wrists bound, she sings "to herself' about Lillas Pastia's in and the rendezvous she might arrange with Jose (Seguidilla: "Pres des ramparts de Seville"). Falling under her spell, he loosens her bonds. The crowd returns to see Carmen led to prison, roaring with delight when she escapes; Jose is arrested for letting her get away.
ACT II
A month later at Pastia's inn, Carmen joins her companions in a gypsy song ("Les tringles des sistres tintaient") and exerts her charms on the matador Escamillo, who boasts of his exploits in the arena ("Votre toast"). When the inn closes, Carmen tells four friends - Frasquita, Mercedes, Daincaire, Remendado - that love for Jose keeps her from going along on their next smuggling trip (quintet: "Nous avons en tete"). They laugh at her, then hide as Jose is heard approaching. Carmen sings and dances for him, but a bugle is heard sounding the retreat, and he starts to return to his barracks. This angers her,
and he pauses to show her the flower she threw at him, telling what it meant to him in prison ("Le fleur que tu m'avais jetee". She invites him to join her wild mountain life, but he refuses. Suddenly Zuniga breaks in, provoking an attack by Jose. Carmen calls the gypsies who seize Zuniga. Jose is now forced to join the outlaws.
ACT III
In their mountain hideout, the smugglers congratulate themselves on their successful career but Jose is unhappy in their midst Carmen finds homesickness tiresome and busies herself with her friends in telling their fortunes at cards. Frasquita sees an ardent lover, Mercedes a wealthy husband, Carmen only death ("En vain pour eviter"). The gypsies leave, and Micaela enters in search of Jose ("]e dis que rien ne m'empouvante"). A shot rings out, and she flees. It was Jose's gun, aimed at Escamillo, who has come looking for Carmen. The two start to fight with knives and are separated by the gypsies, Escamillo invites them all to his next bullfight and leaves after insulting Jose, whose jealousy is reaching dangerous bounds . Remendado brings in Micaela, and she begs Jose to return home. Carmen, tired as she is of him, agrees, but he knows what's in her mind and vows to find her after he has seen his mother.
ACT IV
In Seville 's Plaza de Toros the crowd gathers for the bullfight, hailing Escamillo. Carmen is with him and assures him of her love; she waits in the square, though her girlfriends warn that Jose has been seen prowling around, looking desperate. Carmen is a fatalist; she knows she must face Jose eventually. Sure enough, he enters ("C'est toi?" "C'est moi!") , demanding that she give up Escamillo. But she and Jose are finished , she says, tossing his ring in his face as the crowd is heard cheering for Escamillo. When Carmen tries to rl!n past Jose into the arena, he stabs her, falling in despair by her body.
