greetings, and welcome to the Detroit Opera House.
I look forward to sharing another exceptional season of dance and music with you. After a triumphant opening with the Kirov Ballet and Orchestra, the 2005-2006 danc e season continues with a new and very exciting production-Classical Savion.
Savion Glover is well known for his outstanding choreographic talents and for incredible shows like the Tony Award-winning Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk, but Classical Savion is by far his most ambitious production to date. With an innate sense of music and a mastery of tap dance like no other, Mr. Glover no w applies his artistry to classic works by Bach, Vivaldi and Mendelssohn, creating an electrifying dance experience.
The holidays are a magical time of the year, as families come together and loved ones gather in the spirit of the season. We are thrilled that yo u have decided to share a moment with us this season and are equally excited to bring you the return of two Detroit-area holiday traditions.
Last season, the Joffrey Ballet so captivated audiences with their heartwarming Nutcracker that we felt obliged to bring them back to our stage for 2005. Of course, we've also brought back our special famil y matinees with the Sugarplum Parade, lunch , face painting and all the trappings that make Th e Nutcracker such great family entertainment.
Likewise, the Rackham Symphony Choir returns to the Detroit Opera House stage to perform Too Hot To Handel, a soul-stirring rendition of Handels Messiah, conducted by Suzanne Mallare Acton Now in its third year, Too Hot To Handel will feature Rodrick Dixon and Victor Trent Cook (formerl y of the 3 Mo ' Tenors), Alfreda Burke , Alvin Waddles and the Marygrove College Chorale.
As we look to the future , we mark a very special milestone , the lO-yea r anniversary of the magnificent Detroit Opera House We 'll celebrate the occasion this April, in grand fashion , with a lavish new production of Verdis Aida The spring opera season will

also host our first mainstage production of Rossinis Cinderella, and the return of Strauss' controversial and exceptionally powerful Salome.
In addition to this special anniversary, during Michigan Opera Theatre's 35th year, I take a special pride in noting a couple of step s into a very bright future for the company The completion of our final capital campaign, The Crowning Achievement, will soon bring the Detroit Opera House to co mpletion. This lO-year journey has not only restored our beautiful theater, but has
www.MichiganOpera.org
also turned it into a valuable resource for our community With the completion of our new Ford Center for Arts and Learning on the horizon, we look forward to expanding educational opportunities and welcoming learners of all ages to this vibrant new facility
I extend my deepest gratitude to the Ford Motor Company, DaimlerChrysler, Margo Cohen, David and Marion Handleman, Lee and Floy Barthel, Maggie Allesee and all those whose generosity has contributed to the Ford Center's completion
While the learning center will transform the Broadway side of our facility, the new Detroit Opera House Parking Center has revitalized an entire city block adjacent to the theater. We've worked diligently to improve and ensure parking for your visit to the Detroit Opera House, and this beautiful new block-long facility is reserved just for you during regularly scheduled performances . If you didn 't make use of the structure on this visit, I encourage you to do so on your next. While the parking center is offiCially open for your convenience, we also look forward to opening 20,000 square feet of new retail space along the centers Broadway side.
i wish to express my deepest gratitude to board member and dear friend Herman Frankel, whose vision and foreSight made the Opera House Parking Center a reality Without his determination that Michigan Opera Theatre control its own parking destiny, this undertaking would not have become a reality
Enjoy the performance I

ACT I Scene 1
It is Christmas Eve in an American city in the 1850s. Mayor and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their domestic help are preparing for a party The two children, Clara and Fritz, join their parents in the parlor and enthuse over the Christmas tree and its treasures. Soon, their guests arrive laden with gifts. The last to appear are the m ysterious Dr Drosselmeyer, Clara and Fritzs godfather, and Drosselmeyers nephew. They have brought many wonderful gifts and surprises for the Stahlbaums and their friends. Young and old are delighted and amused by the mechanical dollsColumbine, HarleqUin, the Vivandiere and the Soldier - which dance for the guests. As a special gift for Clara, Dr. Drosselmeyer has brought a Nutcracker. Fritz , who with his friends has been teasing the girls, snatches it away and aCCidentally breaks it. Godfather Drosselmeyer bandages the Nutcracker and comforts the heartbroken Clara But now it grows late ; the guests take their leave, and the family goes upstairs to bed.
Scene 2
It is midnight. Everyon e is sleeping but Clara, who has returned to the parlor to fetch her Nutcracker from under the tree. She hears a noise A small mouse scurries b y, then another. The mice begin to tease her, but Godfather Drosselmeye r has returned to chase them awa y and transform the small Nutcracker into a life-size Nutcracker Doll. Suddenly, the parlor disappears, and the
Christmas tree grows before our very eyes. The toy soldiers that have been standin g guard under the tree have grown to life size. The N utcra cker Doll summons the so ldiers to battle with the mice, who are now led b y the seven-h eaded Mouse King. Clara returns with her Godfather Drosselmeye r, and just in time, she throws her slipper at the Mouse King and saves the N utcracker Doll. With Clara's kiss, he is transformed into the N utcracker Prince , who bears a strikin g resemblance to Dr. Drosselmeyers nephew.
Scene 3
Godfather Drosselmeyer leads Clara and the Nutcracker Prince into the land of Snow. Here , they meet the Snow Queen and King and Snow Prince , who look rema rkably like Clara's mother, father and brother. The enchanted journey continues to the Kingdom of Sweets.
ACT II
The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes Clara, the Nutcracker Prince and Dr. Drosselmeyer to the Kingdom of Sweets. The N utcracker Prince tells the Sugar Plum Fairy about their magical battle with the mice Gifts are presented to Clara. The subj ects of this enchan ted kingdom are the dolls from under Clara 's tree. Divertissements from all over the world and the flow ers from her Victorian bouquet ha ve grown to life size and dance in her honor.
But all dreams must come to an end, and children must return home to their loving families. Clara too departs the land of dreams and returns home , where her parents wait to welcome her. iii

History
RobertJ offrey and Gerald Arpinos uniquely American vision of dance first took form in 1956. The original comp any consisted of six dynamic and highly individual dance rs. While Joffrey stayed in New York to teac h ballet classes and earn money to pay the dancers' salaries, Arpino led the troupe as they crossed Americas h eartland in a station wagon They wo uld unl oad th e car, rosin the stage, se t the lights, iron the costumes, and ge t everything ready for the evenings performance Yet what really set them apart was their repertoire of original ballets by J offrey.
The J offrey Ballet became the first American company to tour the former Soviet Union and the first dance company to perform at the White Hou se . Th e co-founders also commissioned early and new ballets from Alvin Ailey,
Laura Dean, William Forsyth , Jiri Kylian, Mark Morris and Twyla Tharp, to name only a few. It also resurrec ted and reconstructed "lost " works from th e earl y 20th centu ry, primarily Di aghilev's Ba llets Russes The companys repertoire covers the gamut of 20th-century choreography, from the cubist style of pre- and pos t-World War I Paris (Massines Parad e), the Am ericana of the old West (DeMilles Rodeo and Loring's Billy the Kid) and the counterculture freedom of the '60s (Arpinos Iiinity, Th e Clowns, and Sacred Grove on Mount Tamalpais, J offreys Astarte) to the MTV generation (Billboards , with music by Prince)
