Welcom e to Michigan Opera Theatre's 43rd fall season
Welcome to "Drama in the D," a fall season in which we pair classics with the best contempora ry artists to honor the 200'h anniversary of two master compose rs, Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi.
Ou r season opens with Wagners ghos tl y romantic opera, The Flying Dutchman Two powerhouse singers make th e ir debuts with th e company in the role of Senta - American so prano Lori Phillips and Swedis h so pran o E lisabet Strid Ms Phillips first performed the role with the Metropo litan Opera in 2010 , while Ms St rid has recently been app lauded by critics and audiences in Europe for a strong festival season of Wagner roles. German bass-baritone Thomas Gazhelli debuts as th e Du tchman, along with American bass-baritone Kristopher Irmi te r. Bo th singers bring a seasoned, rich Lone to th e role.
In Nove mb e r, we present o ne of th e most performed operas in the world , Verdis La Travia ta . American soprano Nico le Cabell returns to our stage after winning th e BBC Ca rdiff Singer of the World Competition. Ms. Cabell alternates the ro le of Violetta with American sopra n o Corinne Winters, whos had crit ical success performing the role internat ionally Two handsome lyri c tenors, American Zach Bo richevsky, a nd Italian Leo n a rd o Caimi, are making thei r company debuts as Alfredo, Violetta's true love.
As Detroit's home of dance, we bring you our 18'h season of "Dance in the D. " An exc iting company debut arrives in Octobe r, when LA-based Diavolo appea rs for the first time o n our s tage. Diavolo was founded by jacques Heim , who choreog raphed Cirque Du Soleils "KA ". The compa nys acroba tics and a rchitectural set pieces, combined with thrilling movement, wi ll likely expa nd your definition of dance .
Our annual holiday tradition continues Thanksgiving weekend with the return of BalletMet Columbus' Th e Nutcracker The classic famil y favorite includes co mpany dancers along with students from local dance studios performing to Tchaikovsky's timeless score, played live by our very own Michigan Opera Theatre orches tra. To o Hot To Handel , a nother h oliday tradition, comes in December, wi th th e orchestra and Rackham Symphony Choir. This jazz-gospel Messiah is, of course, too hot to miss.
I must take a moment to thank all of you- patrons , foundations, corporatio ns- who co ntinu e t o suppo rt us. While the world seems to be focused on Detroits bankruptcy, your generos it y tells a better storyone of Detroits rich cu ltural pas t , present, and fut ure. As always, we are grateful for the cont inued support o f our fall opera season sponsor, Ford Motor Co mpan y, along with the individual donors and vo lunteers whose gifts of time and investment a llow us to keep the drama on the stage.
Thank you for visiti n g, and e njoy this dramatic fall season!

MARK ARMIN SKI
Detroit artist Mark Arminski talks about his first experi ence creating artwork for Opera .
Ma rk A r minski m ore than 30 years of exper ien ce designing Ayer and poster artwork for live pe r formances on Det roit's srages. li e has designed for local bands, like ponge, and legendary a l ternative rock acts lggy Pop and Parri Sm i th. ' ] hi s season, h e rook a job design i ng artwork for a new genre, ope ra. Armi nski was delighted to discover that he could easi ly relate ro each opera. The result: some of the most st unnin g seaso n artwork Michigan Opera l l 1earre has eve r had.
How did you get your start as an art ist?
I starred drawing when I was abour five. When I was c hil d, my morher would take me ro rhe Derroir Institute of Arrs on Saturday afternoo ns. These rrips, all of the great artwork 1 saw, and my mo ther's s upport , e ncouraged m e to starr c reating my own arr. My first paid gigs were spor illustrations for p ri nting co mpani es, advertisements, an d restaurant murals. In the 1980's, I starred incorporating various p r intmaking a nd photo techn iques inro my work wirh the hum an form. omerime in the la t e 1980's, 1 starred designing flyers for friends in local bands a nd found my passion. It was fu n , rhe people we re cool, an d [ was able to network with a lor of promoters. By
rhe 1990 's, I was designing for a lor of national and loca l bands. At my peak, 64 poster designs a year.
How did you get involved in this project?
R eall ntegra t ed [our partne r advertising agency] ca ll ed me about rhe project. They h ad seen some work I did for the H enry Ford Museum's exhibit, " Rocksrars, Cars and Gu i tars." I was very i me rested, bur I let them know up front that if they were hiring me to follow someone else's v ision, rhey n eeded to hire a stude nt Th e p rocess was completely p ai nl ess, and very fun. Real Integrated and Michigan Ope ra 1heatre we re great to work w i th. I' m really pl eased wi th rhe outcome.
Please describe the process. What was your inspiration?
I always starr with penci l drawings. From there, I used Phorosh op to c reate a crude-l ik e sil k scree n. There was somethi n g in each design rhar I coul d relare ro. lr was rhe perfect seaso n for me ro wo r k o n Mus ic an d a rt a re the rwo things which seem universal to all peoples for all rime. I've bee n ve ry fortuna t e to build a caree r from the ex pl oration, interpretation and rhe resulting creations which come fro m music and my artistic exp ress ion.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS :
I fell in love with opera and in my own small way try to make a difference for those young people following their artistic dreams.
Michigan Opera Theatre for me represents peace and serenity, and wonderful friends. It is a place to let yourself relax and enjoy the most powerful music that sends me to a new place in life,.

listening to and seeing opera especially at the Detroit Opera House. It is the most beautiful theater I have ever been to for a performance. I wanted to return some of those pleasures when I will no longer be around.
No type of music has ever meant so much to me as opera! This was something I always wanted to be a part of my life. I wish my resources would enable me to make a greater difference!
Thank you, Dr. DiChiera, for having been always so warm and friendly to me. I also owe a great debt of gratitude to your fabulous staff who, after working all day to ensure that the evening performances will be perfect (and they al ways are!), are there in the evening to meet and greet patrons such as myself and address any last minute details that might arise.
-Richard M. RaisinFrom 1988 to 2002, Mr. Raisin was a staunch supporter of MOT, participating in all phases of our capital campaigns as we// as annual campaigns for opera and dance, and various fundraisers and special events. He was an usher for a season and a half and joined the Avanti Society as a Founding Member. The Avanti Society is MOT's group of friends who have made arrangements to include MOT in their estate plans. In 2012, prior to moving to Florida where he currently resides, Mr. Raisin made a last major gift to Michigan Opera Theatre .
