THE SMIRK SPENDING A GOOD PART OF ITS LIFE IN A QUEENSLAND SHED COLLECTING DUST AND RUST, THIS LITTLE SR WAS GIVEN A NEW START AT THE HANDS OF CAMPERDOWN HEAD MECHANIC JEREMY TAGAND. Starting with a top to bottom engine rebuild. Cleaned and trimmed up the frame finished in classic black powder coat, blasting every nut and bolt, fitting a KLX swing-arm and new Gazi shocks. Then moving on to giving it a tracker look with wan oversized Kedo oil pump, custom headlight mounted with custom headlight number plate, duck tail tracker seat cowl, custom made pipes with a Supertrapp muffler, fork brace mounting the front fender, mini speedo and K180 Dunlop tyres. The tank and seat cowl were treated to a fresh lick of paint from our good friend Dutchy. With custom surf racks fitted, this smirky SR is laughing all the way to the beach. 06

SUNDAY MASS

Potholes you could sleep in, lane closures ad nauseam, and bumper to bumper traffic pretty much the whole way through. Deus Ex Machina’s New York City Sunday Mass was an extraordinar y test of wills. New Yorkers aren’t known for pulling their punches so when tasked with a ride around Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, on the first sunny weekend of the year, our tri-state motorbiking brethren showed up, geared up, and said screw it and completed the three hour ride with stacks of style, serious swagger, and no moving violations. Riding together in a large group proved to be difficult, with most of us breaking up into smaller, more nimble packs, but we all found our way up

through Grand Central Station and Central Park, back down the Westside Highway, over the Brooklyn Bridge, down the Gowanus Expressway and B elt Parkway before heading back up Ocean Parkway to weave back into Manhattan. It was not easy and it wasn’t what most would consider a leisurely Sunday ride. It was, however, an enchanting three hours of riding motorcycles with new friends while taking in the sights and sounds of one of the greatest cities on earth. And it was wonderful. Thank you, New York. We’ll be riding with you again soon.

9FT & SINGLE AT THE TEMPLE OF ENTHUSIASM Ten years ago surf photographer Dustin Humphrey (D.Hump) helped filmmaker Thomas Campbell organize a historical Indo trip for his upcoming project Sprout. Campbell had envisioned an eclectic mix of open-minded surfers having fun riding every type of board imaginable, and doing so in a wide range of conditions. The now world famous Sprout Indo section had a massive ripple effect on today’s surf culture—encouraging more folks to be a bit less serious about a singular approach to their surfing and consider an omnivore’s menu for equipment choices. “Even though I’d been into singlefins since traveling to Indo in the ’90s, what I saw unfold on that Sprout trip ultimately planted the seeds for my own project years later in Bali,” recalls Dustin Humphrey. “I wanted to build a gathering place that celebrated all aspects of our culture. The result was the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm, a space in Canggu where we construct custom 14

equipment like surfboards, trunks, good coffee and even motorcycles— the vehicles that get us to out of the way spots for good surf. I also wanted this space to host legit art shows, informal surf comps, film nights and intimate concerts in our yard.” After opening the Deus Temple doors with Deus founders Carby Tuckwell and Dare Jennings, Dustin was inspired to start the 9 Ft. & Single Log Fest. A four-day grassroots surf festival headlined by a “justfor-fun” longboard comp with guys and girls riding heavy single-fins in a traditional manner. Though expanded to include: a fish fry; shapers’ forum; womp comp (body surf contest); girls log comp; singlefin mid-length comp; art show; film screening (I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night); and an all-night concert with six bands the 2014 Deus 9Ft & Single Log Fest remains as authentic and unique as the year it was born. In recent years, however, Java has seen a few longboard standouts like Husni Ridwan and “Deni Boy” Ferdaus emerge. Can you tell us a little a bit about your histor y with knitwear and what it is about knitwear that continues to inspires you? I LOVE KNIT WEAR. I was first introduced to a knitting machine as a young teenager by my mother who had a home knitting machine. I went on to study textile design at RMIT University in Melbourne under U.K. designer David Green. On completion I was the first student from the art faculty in the histor y of RMIT to be nominated for the J. McNicol Prize for Excellence. The award was based on academic ‘excellence, leadership, potential and initiative’ and I was one of three graduates nominated. To answer the second part of your question I guess the thing I love about knitwear is that the possibilities are endless. I’m always learning. B ecause it starts with the design and selection of the yarn, which has endless possibilities; followed by the fabric construction, which also offers huge scope. I still knit trials on my Mother’s home machine as well as other machines in my studio as part of my design process; then I develop the fit and construction of the garment, alongside the fabrication. As a designer it’s rewarding to design the whole process. I also love the comfort factor of knitwear.

Wow, so you were quite the student! What happened when you finished your study? Actually, during my studies I had already begun making small production runs of knitwear for a high end boutique in Melbourne and I also did woven fabric designs for a local exclusive woollens fabric manufacturer. I then went on to launch my own business designing and manufacturing “Art Knits” with small production runs for both men’s & women’s wear. My work from this period is part of the National Galler y of Victoria’s and the Sydney Powerhouse Museum’s permanent collections. I was wholesaling to some ver y highend stores throughout Australia and later exported to USA to a range of stores including B ergdoffs. Following this, I began working for Countr y Road where I remained for 8 years and oversaw the designing of the men’s and women’s knitwear program not to mention the sweats & t-shirts. This company was traditionally a woven house, but the knitwear soon became a major component of the growing business. During my tenure Countr y Road opened stores in America, so I designed for both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. I traveled extensively and went to Pitti Filati twice yearly to research the latest yarns. I also traveled to Hong Kong often and developed a great understanding of working in Asia. At this time there was a strong manufacturing industr y in Australia and I oversaw all development in both circular (t-shirting) and flatbed local production. I also developed our ver y own yarns with spinning mills in New Zealand.

a family and I began working for Mambo with Dare in Sept ‘94 and designed knitwear for mens and womens ranges up until 2002. Following Mambo I released a knitwear label under “ Maureen Fitzgerald” producing Men’s & Women’s styles locally & sold to Australia’s premium retailers. I also designed for Studio Italia, Collette Dinnigan, and cashmere for Husk. Dare called me when he started Deus, I was immediately on board , he is inspiring and unique, he supports real creativity, I basically began working with Dare again for Deus from the company’s inception. So what was your inspiration for the DEUS EX MACHINA SS14 KNIT WEAR Capsule? I was inspired by the styles our customers have loved already and so this season the knitwear starting point was thinking about the customer and what they would want to wear for the new season. The colour sense was new and sharper with basic brights, and less focus on the muted dusty tones we have offered previously . The feeling is modern and less vintage. The artwork and the styling was also sharper & clean to pare back to essential details and strengthen the knitwear offer by it’s simplicity.

That’s a significant tenure in the knitwear industr y. I guess you could say that. It’s a field of study I’m incredibly passionate about, I have even lectured on the subject at RMIT in Textile Design. So when did your relationship with Deus founder Dare Jennings begin? I met Dare when I was working at Countr y Road and he and I would keep in touch. When I finished working at Countr y Road, I started Southern Autumn 15
