Germany’s international broadcaster is recognized around the world for taking a clear stance on the most pressing issues of our time, strengthening human rights and opening up new perspectives to its online users, radio listeners and television viewers. DW’s mission is to empower its audiences with a reliable basis for their own decisions. I am grateful for your choice to rely on DW as your trusted source of information.

Sincerely, Peter Limbourg, Director General

Freedom of speech is fundamental to society.

Turning the spotlight on free speech DW was founded to offer news to global audiences and to promote democratic values around the world. We still focus on this today. Our journalists report on human rights around the globe and we believe that freedom is the ultimate human right – whether that refers to freedom of speech, media, assembly or religion. Supporting freedom through education In addition to providing news and information, DW also supports freedom of expression and media freedom through DW Akademie’s activities in 50 countries around the world. Rewarding courage In 2015, we launched the DW Freedom of Speech Award to honor those engaged in a daily fight for free expression.
