HOW IS RELI DELIVERY SYSTEM DIFFERENT AND WHERE WILL IT BE USED? The RELI Delivery System is a mechanically powered syringe infusion pump. The RELI Delivery System stands for Reusable Electricity-free Low-cost Infusion pump.

This low-cost infusion pump is aimed at addressing the barriers of cost of equipment, unreliable power supply, and a shortage of trained medical professionals in some of the world’s most remote areas. Devanshi Mehra

CRUZAR COFFEE TABLE

March 2015

• A classroom project to choose and redesign a coffee table from a local showroom. The goal was to apply the learnings about wood and wooden joineries in the process. The project was carried out in a team of two.

COFFEE TABLE TO REDESIGN This coffee table was chosen from a local furniture showroom.

APPROACH

The cross and curved legs are two major design elements. The interaction is crude with tenon and mortise joineries, resulting in a lot of crevices.

It was decided to retain the element of CROSS to redesign the table, and attempt to minimize the materials and joineries.

STRUCTURE AND JOINERIES: All the legs are placed at an angle, complementing the cross element. Half-lap joints were used for fixing the diagonal supports to the legs, forming a cross at the top and bottom surfaces of alternate legs. POLISH: To enhance the beautiful grains of Ghana teak, the legs were coated with clear lacquer. The diagonal supports were given a grungy texture, to create contrast, highlighting the element of cross, when viewed from different angles.

GLASSWORKS A RANGE OF GLASS PRODUCTS

April 2015

• The project was to produce a range of glass products through the techniques of glass molding and blowing. It was a week long workshop, guided by skilled artisans from the city of Firozabad, which has the largest glass industry in India. • In order to develop a connected range of products, I chose Physalis alkekengi (a.k.a Chinese lantern), a popular ornamental plant as the central inspiration. • The final products were produced within the workshop set-up, with the support of the artisans. The products were completed with lighting fixtures and other accessories in wood and metal.

SEEDSWEEPER CUSTARD APPLE DE-SEEDER

May 2015

• A classroom project to design a device for separating the seeds and pulp of a custard apple. The solution was targeted towards commercial set-ups that use the pulp in beverages or ice cream.

5

CURRENT METHODS TO SEPARATE THE PULP AND SEEDS: Seeds are removed by hand for using the pulp in recipes of milkshakes and ice-creams. This method is inefficient, consuming a lot of time and leading to wastage of pulp that could not be separated from the seeds properly. It also raises hygiene concerns.

For certain milk-based recipes, the pulp is mixed with milk in a grinder at a low speed such that the pulp is mashed and seeds are separated. The seeds are then sieved out. For milkshakes, customers prefer fresh thick pulp, but this technique mashes the pulp while mixing it with milk. Hence, the scope for a new device to address the above mentioned concerns, was identified.

TARGET INDUSTRY Commercial kitchens that use custard apple for various recipes such as ice-creams, beverages etc.

DESIGN CRITERIA The device was developed, focusing on the following aspects. Hygiene

Efficiency

Intact pulp recovery

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT PARALLEL PRODUCT INSPIRATION

MECHANICAL CONCEPT Using a manual beater and a fabricated hemispherical sieve, the seeds are quickly separated from the pulp, with most pulp intact. The mechanism worked to a satisfactory extent.

Mechanical prototype

ELECTRICAL CONCEPT For commercial settings, the beating mechanism was further developed into an electric device for efficiency. The electric mechanism took 2 minutes and 40 seconds to separate the seeds of one custard apple (approximately 470gms), which was a almost a minute less than the time consumed by a manual beater, increasing efficiency by approximately 30%.

BAG PRINTS WILDCRAFT, BANGALORE

May 2015 - June 2015

• As a two month internship, I worked with Wildcraft PVT. LTD., an Indian outdoor and adventure product company, in Bangalore. I worked on four prints for Wildraft and WIKI (a sub brand of Wildcraft) bags that were launched in 2016. • I initiated the camouflage print and developed it to an extent after which it was taken up by a senior designer for refinement and pattern making. For other three prints, I worked with a senior designer from conceptualization to the final artworks up to the sampling stage.

KEY TO MY NAME A PERSONALIZED BOOK FOR CHILDREN

March 2017 - September 2017

• The task was to design a customizable children’s book, a niche concept for the Indian market, targeting children between the ages of 3-10 years. The book is placed as a premium gifting product for children and currently selling through various e-commerce websites.

THEME OF THE BOOK “Key to My Name” is essentially a quest where the child embarks on an adventurous journey to find his / her name as the protagonist of the tale. The stories remain an essential learning tool, imparting important life lessons to the child like courage, kindness, humility and to believe that nothing is impossible. The stories within are decided as per the letters of the child’s name. In each story, the protagonist is helped by a new character to find a key to the respective letter.
