Introduction

RESUME - Hey there, I’m Deva/Axiong. My full name is Andrew Deva Sutomo my chinese name is 卓胜雄 (22), and I am a fresh graduate in visual communication design with a strong desire, will, and aptitude for work. I am constantly captivated by how well design can convey concepts, arouse feelings, and motivate behavior. I am constantly excited to take on new tasks and challenges and use my abilities by changing the world with art.

Despite my primary role as a designer, I fnd myself frequently engaging in artistic endeavors that are deeply subjective and reflective of my personal identity. This duality allows me to embrace both aspects of my creative self.

As an artist, I create works that resonate with my own emotions and experiences, often infusing them with signifcant sentimental value. These pieces are a form of selfexpression, allowing me to communicate my inner thoughts and feelings through my art.

On the other hand, as a designer, my focus shifts towards understanding and meeting the needs and desires of others. I actively listen to and observe my audience, aiming to create designs that not only fulfll their requirements but also exceed their expectations. This role requires a balance of creativity and practicality, ensuring that the fnal product is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

BAR

(UNDER CLAY CREATIVE HOUSE) is a bar that can transform a lively and engaging space that reflects the diversity and vibrancy of the city. This can help to create a sense of community and connection among customers and residents, making the bar an integral part of the city’s identity and culture.

The philosophy behind all of this is an event that occurs underground and serves as a gathering place for people from all walks of life just like a metro station. Overall, the silver lining between metro stations and bars is we want to shared focus on creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that accommodate large numbers of people efficiently.

AKULTURASI BUDAYA TIONGHOA DI CIREBON BOOK

- A Final project i did for my Bachelor Degree credential. I designed a comprehensive book detailing the history of Chinese acculturation in Cirebon, Indonesia. This project was driven by a commitment to fostering unity, reducing disintegration, and combating intolerance and racial conflict. The book explores the rich cultural exchanges between the Chinese community and local Indonesian cultures, highlighting how these interactions have shaped Cirebon’s unique cultural landscape over centuries. Through this work, I aim to promote understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, emphasizing the importance of harmony and mutual respect in a multicultural society.

POST BREAKUP SKETCHBOOK

PROJECT - a deeply personal project that involves creating a series of sketchbook artworks inspired by scenes from iconic romantic scenes from films. This project features meticulously crafted illustrations from movies such as “In the Mood for Love,” “Chungking Express,” “The Darjeeling Limited,” and “The Godfather.”

In the wake of a significant breakup, I found solace and a means of emotional expression through art. This project became a therapeutic outlet for processing my feelings and reflecting on the complexities of love and loss (a cry for help, if you must). Through this endeavor, I aim to channel my personal experiences and sentiments into a creative and expressive artistic journey. Each artwork serves as a homage to the evocative storytelling and visual artistry of these beloved classics, while also showcasing my ability to convey complex emotions and atmospheres through my drawing techniques. This project is as much about personal catharsis as it is about celebrating the emotional depth of these films.

RACIALLY MOTIVATED KIND

DRAGON - The “Racially Motivated Kind Dragon” concept draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese notion of dragon guardianship. In Chinese culture, dragons are revered as powerful and benevolent protectors, embodying strength, wisdom, and a deep sense of guardianship over humanity. This concept blends these cultural symbols with a modern, whimsical twist. The term “Kind” within this concept signifies an inherent, almost instinctual inclination to act kindly and compassionately, even when surrounded by hostility or negativity.

The presence of pictures of an artist from both their youth and their present can serve multiple purposes, each providing valuable insights and context for the people. With this, the artist tends to narrate a journey. Showing images from different stages of an artist’s life helps to illustrate their personal and professional journey. It offers a visual timeline of their growth, changes, and milestones, giving the audience a sense of how we evolved over time.

BEGINING & END

BOUQUET ( BUNGA AWAL AKHIR) - This artwork is a combination of three main elements: two pencil drawings and a flower installation, which together create a visual narrative about masculinity and its impact. The first pencil drawing depicts the artist of the piece, with eyes closed and lying down, reflecting a moment of introspection or an end. The second pencil drawing depicts the man’s open hand, symbolizing acceptance or surrender.

The dried flower installation, tied with red thread, adds strong symbolism. Dried flowers are often associated with elegance or femininity, as well as mourning, while the red thread symbolizes destiny and unbroken connections. These flowers are arranged to resemble the shape of a dress, challenging traditional conventions of masculinity. this highlights the cultural irony where many men receive flowers only once, as a symbol of gentleness and respect, on the end.

By depicting flowers in the form of a dress worn by a man, the artist attempts to break down the walls of masculine stigma, encouraging a broader and more inclusive acceptance of self-expression. The red thread tying the flowers symbolizes the bonds and destiny that bind human life, reminding us that even if men might not receive gentleness during their lives, a deep emotional connection remains.

DUALITY OF A MISSUS (DUALITAS PUAN) - a captivating oil painting on canvas that explores the profound contrast between two Balinese women, each immersed in a vastly different environment, yet connected through their shared humanity. The composition is divided into two distinct halves, symbolizing the dichotomy of existence and the eternal struggle between light and darkness, purity and sin.

In the upper portion of the painting, one woman stands amidst a therapeutic light blue sky, bathed in a serene,

sanguine atmosphere. Her demeanor is peaceful, emanating a sense of tranquility and inner harmony. The soft hues of blue and gentle brushstrokes evoke feelings of serenity and spiritual elevation.

Conversely, the lower half of the painting portrays the other woman engulfed in flames, surrounded by a fiery inferno. The intense heat and highcontrast shadows cast by the flames create a stark visual representation of sin being consumed by the fiery abyss. Despite the chaos and turmoil of her surroundings,

her expression remains stoic, suggesting a quiet acceptance of her fate or perhaps an inner struggle against the forces of darkness.

“Duality of a Missus” delves into the complex interplay between opposing forces within the human experience. The contrasting themes of light and darkness, purity and sin, serve as allegorical representations of the dualities inherent in life. The tranquil sky symbolizes the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and inner peace, while

the fiery depths below represent the temptations and struggles that threaten to consume the soul.

The two Balinese women, facing each other across the divide, embody the eternal struggle between virtue and vice, confronting the viewer with the choice between righteousness and moral decay. Yet, despite their disparate circumstances, there exists a subtle connection between them, reminding us of our shared humanity and the universal quest for meaning and redemption.

The collage art showing Egyptians cut out of their surroundings represents the desire to escape reality. I create a commentary on the desperate to break free from the restrictions of daily life and explore new possibilities by removing those involved from their original settings. After removing the people, the remaining blank spaces could allow the uncharted, unexplored, and the possibility of change.

ABSCOND #2

June 21th, 2022

In this particular artwork, I meticulously selected individuals from photographs, carefully cutting them out to remove any surrounding context. By isolating these figures, the artist removes them from their original narratives or settings, allowing them to exist independently in a new visual realm.

ABSCOND - Ultimately, an artwork created through collage for Nusakara Artspace exhibition, where people are cut out from their original backgrounds. It challenges traditional notions of representation, encourages contemplation of identity and societal influences, and invites viewers to explore the boundaries of art and perception.

ILLUSTRATION -

This is my approach to creating a new visual language in my illustrations. I cut out images to creat a form inspired by mythological creatures and tales. By incorporating elements from these ancient stories, aiming to blend traditional mythological themes with contemporary design techniques. This process not only breathes new life into these age-old legends but also allows me to explore the boundaries of visual storytelling. My goal is to create a unique and captivating visual experience that bridges the gap between the past and the present.
