We always knew what we wanted: dynamic photography, cutting edge fashion, irresistible content, and an irreplaceable role in the community. That hasn’t changed. But now we’re focused on refining each of those goals with the aim of creating the best Fashion & Lifestyle Magazine in Denver. In this issue, you will find artists close to my heart. On the front cover, you will see the work of Gino. He is a Denver native with immense talent and no formal training, making his designs uniquely Denver creations. His designs speak of and for the female body like no one’s I’ve seen before, and we are proud to feature him in the magazine Featured in our music section, you will see Molly Cottrell, an immensely talented neo-soul singer. In the community, DeVelo has been working with the non-profit organization EarthLinks. For those of you who don’t know EarthLinks, they are a prominent organization in Denver that among other projects, helps the poor and homeless learn job skills by teaching them to cultivate gardens and arrange flowers—helping our environment and Denver’s destitute at the same time. By the time this issue is published, DeVelo will have sponsored “An Evening to Grow: Cocktail Benefit” in which one hundred percent of the proceeds benefit EarthLinks. We are proud to support this big player in our community, and we hope you will too.

For the interview, I met Molly at her home in the DU area. Bryndon Tarafa: Molly, it’s a pleasure to meet you finally. How are you? Molly Cottrell: I’m well. My voice is a little bit shot because I’ve had a cold and had to sing last night. But well still.

Molly Cottrell: It’s small. Central Washington University is in Ellensburg and that’s where my dad teaches. I don’t feel attached to it like a hometown. But it’s only a hundred miles from Seattle. I LOVE that city. I loved being so near to the coast. A city like Seattle has so much character. BT: Did the Seattle music scene influence you at all?

BT: What is your first memory of music or singing? Molly Cottrell: Well, I remember in third grade, when I was eight or nine, I asked my mom if I could take voice lessons. She said it might be a good thing for you and sent me into my very first voice lessons in elementary school and I remember my voice teacher put books on my stomach to teach me to breathe correctly. But I remember being younger than that and singing ABC’s around the house. Oh yeah! And at recess in third grade, five of my friends and I would go to the playground to make up dances. It was right when the Spice Girls came out. We were each one of the Spice Girls and every recess we would get into our little line and dance. I was the ring leader of that. I was a Spice Girls Nazi. I was like, “this is what we do!” It was fun.

You may have seen Molly Cottrell’s name posted in venues around Denver such as Moe’s Original Barbecue and Bowling and The HiDive. Despite her siren-like talent, she has, in the true soul style, enchanted mainly audiences in small bars. But that’s about to change.

BT: You’re not a native to the Denver area. Tell me about your hometown, Ellensburg, Washington?

Molly Cottrell: My favorite

vocalist of all time is Otis Redding. I love Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. And for more modern artists, Joss Stone and Adele. Amy Winehouse is fantastic. But really what gets me is soul music and Motown. Funk and black music from the 60’s just melts me. BT: What is different between you and your influences? How do you add to the neo-soul equation?

Molly Cottrell: I think because of the time I live in, I have a modern take on soul music. A lot of my music has gospel influenced background music and backup vocals, which adds to the retro feel of the song. But I think my lyrics stand out a lot in my music. They’re very personal. I feel very vulnerable performing them. It’s like, “hey, you can read my diary. Here it is.” I’m very honest in my lyrics. A lot of artists see lyrics as a sidenote or a complement to their music. But, for me, it’s the whole point. Also, because I feel it’s important to be honest and sincere. That matches exactly with the whole premise of soul. Because soul is real and raw. It is what it is. It’s simple, but full of emotion and humanity.

I’m honest and truly making a statement. BT: For example, in your single “Not What I Need” the line is, “but I didn’t know you well.” Where does that come from? Molly Cottrell: When you meet someone, it’s hard not to project your expectations onto them. It’s very easy to get twisted and then later you realize, “oh, I thought you were like this, but that’s because I expected you to be like that, and you’re really not like that.” Like you’ve seen something of someone and you think that’s who they are. That’s not them, that’s who I thought they would be. It’s the confusion of really knowing somebody or thinking that you know somebody. BT: Are we getting more of your insightful lyrics in rest of the album?

Molly Cottrell: I believe so, yes. A lot of songs on this album deal with personal relationships but others are more reflective like, for example, “Undecided Blue”. I started reading Great Expectations and there was a beautiful line that said, “he had eyes of such a very undecided blue that they seemed to much as… have somehow got mixed with their BT: As much as with own whites.” That phrase grabbed music? Multi-talented Dancer/Model/ Rapper Asiel is spicing things up on Denver’s Hip Hop music scene. As an openly gay artist he is charting a course through rarely navigated waters with his unique brand of rap .

I caught up with the now established artist and we discussed everything from his soon to be released video for “East Side” to one of his most embarrassing moments. His easy going charm and grace sparkled in sharp contrast to the edgy lyrics, making him one of Denver’s most intriguing artists.

His love of music flourished alongside his passion for dance. Asiel: I hardly listen to the radio, so not any of today’s artists. But, as far as Hip hop and Rap artists, Tu Pac, Biggie Smalls, and Lil’ Kim. There are great artists out now but I’m not influenced by them. I want to be the first Asiel versus the next whoever. Tell me about your songwriting process. Do you create the beat or the lyric first? Asiel: It depends. Sometimes, I write words and then I’ll find the beat to match it. Other times, I’ll find a beat that sparks my

imagination and the words just come to me.

Asiel: Yeah, but more acting. I’m pumped for it. What has been the most rewarding part of being an artist in the Denver Music scene?

Asiel: The positive feedback from the demo. I thought I would get more negative response because of the shock value but most of it is positive, and most people are excited to see the video. They want to see my other work.

Enter The Foot

A Chat with one of Denver’s Up-And-Coming Experimental Rock Bands By Marian Tuin With a lyrical and intuitive maturity beyond their young career, Denver trio, The Foot, has raised the standard in the Denver music scene for more than two years. In that short time, Jeff McCollister, Noah Shomberg, and Phil Barrett have opened for The Flobots, and they have released a full length album entitled Primary Colors, a live EP, performed at CMJ in New York. But that only scratches the surface of where they want to go. “We are like-minded in that we’re willing to work hard and we’re our hardest critics, but at the same time, we expect nothing less than success,” Jeff the lead singer said. With that kind of determination and work ethic, the trio has dedicated itself to perfecting the craft. “We all live together; we do everything together…” Phil began before being interrupted by the witty Jeff. “And by everything,” Jeff said. “He means everything.” The band laughed. It’s clear this is going to be a fun interview. “Living together has helped us get in the same head space with writing, allowing us to progress quicker. Bands that don’t live together don’t have the same dynamic,” Noah said. Coming from diverse music backgrounds, it isn’t a surprise that The Foot makes music that is best defined as genre-crossing. “It’s difficult to classify our own genre because our music is different.” Noah agreed, “We’re still relatively new. We’re not in the box with our first album. You can hear that Jeff ’s got a classical voice or that I play jazz, but that only comes through in our vibe.”

It’s fair to say their songwriting process is as eclectic as their sound. “We’re constantly in a state of creating. There’s no formula, but we know we have a potential song when we hear it,” Noah said. Jeff is credited for writing three songs on Primary Colors but admits, “It’s different on every song. For instance, on one of the songs, Corner of Sunset, Noah came to me with lyrics. The lyrics came from a conversation the band had about finding yourself in that quarter-life crisis.” The trio has found that balance while reconciling life as individuals and band members. “I think we’re flexible enough to devote time to this project, but we still have the freedom to tour, play shows, rehearse, write, and record,” Phil explained. When you combine their earnest music with their engaging personalities, it’s easy to see they’re on their way to success. “The Denver music scene is super accepting,” Noah said modestly. “Granted, we’re a young band compared to bigger bands out there, but we’ve still had the opportunity to play unbelievable venues like The Gothic, The Bluebird, and Larimer Lounge. We’ve played with some buzz-worthy bands in Denver.” Of those venues, their favorite is the Larimer Lounge. Phil said, “They’ve always been nice to us and it’s a small venue with a 250 person capacity. It’s old school, and they care about the music. They have a diverse schedule all the time.” True to form, Jeff is quick to point out, “they also have attractive bartenders. A Father Makes Time for Music How Louis Colaiannia Achieved Musical Success While Raising a Son By Corrine Sterling Most single dads don’t have time for music careers. But Louis Colaiannia, one might say, has discovered the art of career and lifestyle managing. Not only did he singlehandedly raise his son, Louis III, he managed to find success in two separate music genres. As a Jazz Musician his music is popular in Italy. His single, “City Scapes” will bring him to Rome to play on an Italian language television program. As a New Age musician, Louis’ single “A Moment Between Eternities” graces the ears of millions of fans in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. But the fans of each of these genres wouldn’t know he was the same person. Louis grew up in Denver. At the age of 5, Louis began piano lessons. Once, Louis’ teacher gave him a difficult Rachmaninoff piece to play. She said, when he learned to play it well, he would hear rain in the background. Louis didn’t believe it, but he practiced hard anyway, and then one day he heard the rain. “That was when I understood you can paint with music,” Louis said. To salute his teacher, Louis wrote “The Way of the Rain.”

When his dad died over 16 years ago, the loss injured him deeply. Naturally, he sat down at the piano. The first three notes that came to him were d-a-d. He played the three notes repeatedly, feverishly. Out of the almost unconscious repetition came the piece, “Tears for Dad.” But the theme of fatherhood surfaces in more than Louis’ music. Raising his son as a single father, Louis was frequently asked to choose between two careers: a career as a father and his career as a musician. Once, he was asked to sign a contract for 300 concert dates per year, but turned down the contract because of the impact it would have on his son. “That was an easy choice to make,” Louis said. “There was no other choice to be made. Music had to wait.” “My son was terrific,” Louis said. “He loved to be part of the band. He was five years old with a blanket, but he was happy to be with his dad.” Despite the hardship, Louis continued to write music and produce albums, which has led to his enduring success today. 24

many devoted music enthusiasts including the members of the Louis Colaiannia and Company, the Orchestra Instructor, Jolayne Gutzait, for Arvada K-8, North Arvada Middle School and Arvada High Schools’ Regular and Advanced Orchestra groups. The students’, staff, and audience were truly entertained by each other, and the special person that brought the first Global Youth Music Program to fruition. During this event he boasted a favorite new composition, Grandpa’s Toy Box. Each member of the Company was showcased between an up tempo, snappy melody. Louis undeniably had the most fun playing in the ‘The Toy Box’, sharing the talents of the band with the audience. Many, many music and orchestra students from the Arvada area were the first to be mentored and directed by the Global Music Program. The Company and the student have played several pieces of Louis’ work. A well known videographer, Dave Higgins, took video of all of the students while they played. Each performer was taped as an individual unique memento for their families and friends. Proceeds from the video sales will benefit future programs, help pay for future music programs, instruction, instruments, and most importantly, to help close the gap that impending music program budget cuts will leave. Louis Colaiannia is a father, pianist, composer, entertainer, philanthropist, dentist, business man, all around athlete, basketball scholar, martial arts student, bowling enthusiast, and soon to be Grandfather, but NOT a piano man.

Louis’ music comes from a place he cannot describe, a special place that has allowed him to write and compose so many different types of music throughout the years. It seems as though his life history is shown to us in fleeting glimpses of classical, jazz, pop, new age and contemporary music. We asked Louis if his style could be categorized and he thought not. We asked him if he could sum up his genre in one word, would it be “Louis?” He smiled, gazed away for a moment and said, “Yes, I like that”. He described further that each era of his music presented itself, from that special place, as a direct representation of his life’s choices, circumstance and mindset.

His passion for youth leadership was clear during a recent production that DeVelo Talent and Magazine had the pleasure of attending. The show was produced and presented by Louis’ and his son, Louis III’s own non-profit group, Global Youth Music Project. The non-profit agency’s goals include creating; first, a regional group of young talented musicians that will be given the opportunity to play with professional musicians, then forming groups from several regions of the United States, offering tough competition, searching for the best young artists in the country. Meanwhile following suit internationally, allow for world wide concerts of young people from many nations to play simultaneously via the internet. A true universal language brought together, uniting the best of the best together, in harmony. Meggie Hodge: In life, my mom, Debbie, and my great aunt, Letaine; in fashion, Brazilian designer, Leno Villaventura, because he has a very cool style; French designer, JC de Castelbajac, because his designs are just crazy; and, of course, Marc Jacobs. How do you think Denver compares to other cities relative to fashion? Meggie Hodge: The fashion industry in Denver is really starting to grow and has the potential to

grow quickly. Part of the reason I decided to come to Denver is because it’s still a relatively untapped market and there’s a lot of opportunity here as a young designer.

What are a few of the new trends for spring and summer? Meggie Hodge: Denim is a constant, of course, but this season the skinny jean is making way for a vintage-style straight leg with obvious gold stitching. I also think we’ll be seeing a resurgence of the trouser pant and layers – lots of light layers in natural tones with pops of color in turquoise and avocado green. And, when it comes to jewelry, small and delicate pieces in gold or silver are starting to win out over the more chunky pieces we’ve seen in the past.

Tell us a bit about the birth of the Kitty Mae line.

SSD: I took the name from Kitty Mae Cupcake—my stage name when I was performing burlesque shows. I needed a hat for a performance, and I didn’t want to glue feathers to a pre-made hat. So, I basically taught myself how to make hats and picked up a couple millenary techniques online. I made the hat, and I had so much fun that I never did the act. I just kept making hats.

SSD: The brides nowadays are very much into personalizing and individualizing their weddings. They like to make it about their individual style. That works well for a milliner who makes attentiongrabbing hats. DV: You bring some highly innovative ideas to the medium, while keeping a vintage flair. Where do you draw from? SSD: A lot of it comes from vintage costuming, Victorian and the ‘30’s and ‘40’s, back when women truly accessorized. Back when it was expected to look your best every time you walked out the door. DV: And the rest? SSD: I do designs based upon sculpture, others are based on forms in nature and sometimes I play with the materials until something happens. It’s all me, every stitch on every hat, it’s all me. DV: What is your production schedule like for a given month? SSD: If I don’t have special orders, I usually come up with at least four or five new designs a month. But I tend to work more in spurts where I will have a deadline, like a summer bridal collection. Within a month, I’ll come up with ten or twelve pieces, but then I won’t make anything new for a few weeks. DV: Ok, I’m hooked. How can I get one of your designs for a deserving lady?

Nine years ago, Perkins was approached by a customer at the bank he was working for – she wondered if he might be able to help her with her makeup. Finding that really enjoyed doing makeup, Perkins found his way, briefly, to Estee Lauder before NARS snapped him up; together, Perkins and NARS have been making beautiful faces ever since. Perkins was born in Colorado Springs and began playing classical piano when he was just five years old, “I would go to church with my parents and pretend like the top of the pew

was a piano. I’d listen to what was being played and pretend to play along then, when we got home from church, I’d run to the piano and play it exactly as I’d heard it.” Music is an important theme in Perkins’ life; in fact, his mother, Jacqueline Weaver, started a singing career when she was just 16 and his grandmother was a professional opera singer. Mom also taught Perkins the importance of a good skin care regimen when he was growing up. “To this day, the number one bit of advice I must share with men and women is the importance of going to sleep with a clean face. When we sleep at night, our cells regenerate – if our pores are full of dirt and makeup, the cells can’t regenerate properly so the skin is left looking dull

The Business of Brett Lisle Baseball

While not your ordinary high school senior, Lisle has taken the usual steps to get where he is today. Success has taken many forms for Brett; maintaining a 4.1 GPA, his first recruit came at the age of 14. As an accomplished young man, well respected and admired by his peers, he excels in many sports; baseball taking the lead

Lisle began his baseball career at the age of 4 playing, T-ball; he continued on through coach pitch and onto kid pitch baseball for the next several years. At the age of nine, he played his first position as pitcher. His exceptional skill landed him a spot in the top team for the District, Colorado, and then on to the Regional Competition. Touring with his team to Missouri in 2003 was the end of the ordinary, and the start of something extraordinary! Noticeable to his coaches and family, baseball was more than just a hobby to Lisle, it was a natural talent. His mother 62

“keeps everybody grounded,” while his father helps manage Lisle by searching for innovative ways to bring exposure to his son. His father always maintains a positive demeanor and encouraging attitude. Lisle’s next inning was The Elite 24. After playing youth baseball, with years of pitching practice and coaching, he strived to reach his potential. Lisle advanced through the district, regional, and national competition once again. Reaching All Star status, the best of Colorado’s players, traveled to Florida where his team competed against the Austin Eagles, a definite win for Lisle. Soon after this game he was recruited by the Austin Eagles where he pitched for a highly competitive Texas team. This is when his first recruitment at the age of 14 occurred. Traveling to Austin and throughout the teams region; he enjoys every pitch, inning after inning, and game after game. While wearing the uniform number #51, to immolate his hero and idol Randy Johnson, who was known as the ‘Big Unit’-- Brett earned the knick name ‘Little Unit’. Both of his parents are tall, his mother – 5’11”, his father – 6’3”. Brett, a current high school senior, stands an astonishing 6’8” tall, weighing 200 pounds, he is hardly a “little unit“, and

certainly an ominous sight on the pitchers’ mound. High school baseball at Thunder Ridge, in Highlands Ranch, Colorado has helped Brett recognize that you do not balk at opportunities when they arise and that you make sacrifices in order to allow for opportunities. Never hinder or set your passion aside, in Lisle’s case… Baseball! Always keeping his priorities straight, Lisle still upholds a great social life. Brett has always found time to hang out with friends, going to see them compete in their own sporting events, hanging out at the shops nearby, snowboarding and playing golf. We spoke to some of Brett’s coach’s, each making similar statements about him. With an incredible wingspan, he is known as ‘The Bird’, but his height is not the most impressive trait to them. Thunder Ridge High School’s Athletic Director, Bob Nelson, sees Lisle as a top student, well rounded, and talented--both in baseball and basketball. His basketball coach Mr. Joe Ortiz, stated that, “Brett is an extremely hard worker and very dedicated athlete. Everyone knows that baseball is Brett’s true love, but when he plays basketball he is 100% committed. Mr. Lisle is one of very few athletes who could play two different sports in college. He had many schools inquire about him but were saddened by the

For Dominick Ruminer, Speed isn’t Enough By Dylan Sanders Talking to Dominick Ruminer is like talking to a wise prophet. This 24 year-old native of Westminster, CO has made a living on his bike since the age of 14. As long as he can remember, Dominick loved riding his bike. Spending every hour after school riding around the neighborhood streets, Dominick started on the natural path of the rider and began amateur BMX racing. But something happened after his fourth year. He became bored. It didn’t take long for him to realize there’s more to BMX than winning a race. “I waited to be the last rider out of the gate. Instead of racing, I did tricks on the dirt jumps,” Dominick said. He soon discovered that BMX was more about expressing his individuality than winning a race. He loved riding in front of a crowd, but as the pressure grew on him to win, he began to fight the system.

Around that time, he ran into Brian Gavagan, founder of Yellow Designs—a local pro BMX stunt show—in the back parking lot of a movie theatre. Dominick was showing off for a few local kids. “Meeting Brian—it was destiny,” Dominick said.

Brian took Dominick under his wing and hired him to help with the bike show. Brian inspired him to drop into bigger bowls and try riskier tricks. When Dominick was ready, he became part of the Yellow Designs team. Now, almost a decade later, Dominick Ruminer is sponsored by Hoffman Bikes and Jump Energy Drinks. He still rides for Yellow Designs, Colorado’s only professional BMX team. With Yellow Designs, he reached heights he never

imagined: from riding in Istanbul, to performing in halftime shows at Broncos games. “Very few people get to follow their dreams,” says Ruminer. who believes he’s lucky to have a strong support system in his BMX buddies. “Because of riding, my friends are like my family. The basics in life, such as having confidence, talking to girls, have all improved from being a rider.” This is perhaps why Dominic seems wise. As for the future, Dominick said, “extreme sports are yesterday’s football and baseball. More

children are growing up wanting to be professionals on a BMX.” Ruminer believes the opportunities of professional BMX are endless, “but at the end of the day, BMX is about the rush.”

John Spriggs is a professional skier from Denver. He skis for Nordica Skis, owns Flowmotion Clothing, and has been featured in ski movies produced by Rage and Teton Gravity Research. What’s your craziest ski trip story? One summer, I was riding on a bus from Vancouver to Whistler. We were almost to Whistler when the bus started to smoke, and a few minutes later it burst into flames. The only door in the bus wasn’t working, so we jumped out of the windows. I watched all my stuff—including my passport and wallet—burn to the ground. What’s your favorite fast food restaurant?

Which item of clothing can you never leave home without? Gotta have my Flowmotion Hoodie, just to stay steezy!

“Belly” I love the soundtrack and the style of filming—and DMX is hilarious in it. What inspired you to partner with Flowmotion? I was riding for a few different clothing companies over the years and wanted to stop skiing/ promoting for free and do it for a company that I partly owned. I like it because I could see the company’s growth and knew my hard work was benefiting me and the company. I also like to design clothing that stands out in a good way. How did you learn to manage a business? I learned to manage a business from my experiences in the ski industry. I have seen companies go from nothing to huge names—and the other way around. You learn a lot by paying attention to the companies that sponsor you. You see how they do business, and you take from the good and learn from the bad.

Walking into Row 14 Bistro & Wine Bar for the first time, it’s impossible not to feel special. This classy downtown restaurant eschews the conventional rules of Denver fine-dining, offering a highly tasteful, elegant experience without alienating those who might like a good ol’ burger ‘n fries with their top-shelf wine. “It’s intentional,” General Manager Justin Russell said, “that our burger is the first item on the menu.” For a brand new restaurant in the heart of downtown, highlighting a seemingly pedestrian item might seem like a bold move, but it gets to the core of what makes Row 14 a unique and memorable place. The burger, after all, isn’t your run-of-the-mill greasy spoon fare: The meat is ground on-site and comes exclusively from local farms, ensuring that this will be the freshest, tastiest burger you’ve ever eaten. The idea, as Russell puts it, is to create a place where “Uncle Joe can have a cheeseburger and a beer or Grandma can have a chardonnay and a salmon.” Whether you spring for the burger and fries, the housemade Pork Ragu Lasagna, the Crispy Duck Leg Confit, or any of the menu’s other creative concoctions, the food is uniformly delicious. With an eclectic selection drawn from Chef Arik Markus’ time in New York City and San Francisco, many of the dishes – like the Crispy Pork Belly served with braised beluga lentils and soft boiled farm egg – represent a “global spin on American Bistro classics.” It’s bacon and eggs, but with the kind of creative, delicious twist that makes it truly unforgettable; the kind of thing you’ll be raving to your friends about for days.

It’s this kind of attention to detail that governs every aspect of the restaurant, from cuisine, to wine, to aesthetics. In terms of the latter, Row 14 is a sight to behold. The décor is sleek and tasteful, what Russell calls “modern meets raw material”. From the fancy tiling of the floor, to the double row of bar-tops, to the subtle mood lighting, each aspect of Row 14’s appearance complements the others to create an atmosphere that will invite long conversations and continual refills of the restaurant’s extensive and impressive wine selection. Impressive, may be an understatement. The wine selection is an essential aspect of what makes Row 14 one-of-a-kind. Russell is a Master Sommelier–one of less than two hundred in the world bestowed with such a distinction–and has used his impressive knowledge of wine to hand-select a list that would make any wine aficionado’s head spin. Each wine has been specifically chosen to be paired with a menu item, meaning that no matter what you order, there will be a drink to specially complement your meal, all the way from appetizer to dessert. Speaking of which, no matter how engrossed you may be in your meal, don’t forget to leave room for butterscotch pudding or lemon meringue tart with graham cracker crust. These little morsels may change the way you think and feel about dessert. From the local, farm-grown veggies and meats, to the warm and inviting atmosphere and luxuriant wine list, everything about Row 14 is fresh and original. This place is classic Denver: pushing the bounds of the elegant dining experience to new and exciting levels, while still offering a good ol’ burger n’ fries for Uncle Joe.

Tangible smiles light up the faces of guests left and right as attractively plated and even more attractive-tasting dishes are delivered to their tables by the extremely personable wait staff. That’s another thing about Row 14: the kind of impersonal server-customer experience you might find at other downtown fine-dining establishments has

no place here. The wait staff and the managers take great pride in familiarizing themselves with their clientele in order to personalize the experience. Don’t be surprised if, on your second visit, you’re greeted by name or shown to your favorite table.

EarthLinks is privileged to be able to contribute to the first Community Column of DeVelo Magazine. We look forward to the opportunity for our whole community to share information in this magazine for years to come. Community.

DeVelo Community

The word means different things to different people. To some, community simply defines the town they live in. To others, it may identify a group they belong to. At EarthLinks we think the word has a much deeper meaning. To us and our participants, community conjures a sense of togetherness. It identifies a feeling that is hard to explain, but nevertheless is very real. It identifies a place of refuge, support and encouragement - a place where one’s humanity can be recovered and reaffirmed. Our name and program remind us that our “place” is our home here on Earth. Our mission at EarthLinks is reflected in our name – people who 74

are homeless connect to Earth’s community of life and nurture its beauty, bounty and sustenance. Because our participants are involved in the designing, the planting, the caring and the harvest, our garden is a place where they are rooted to something greater—connection to the cycles of life in the garden and in their own experience. At EarthLinks, we create a place where hearts and Earth flourish together. We work to heal Earth as we work to heal ourselves. Many of us suffer from mental illness and addictions. Our lives are fragile and fragmented. We’ve found that the interface with nature and the creative process is calming and healing. So we work together to form an accepting community, one that supports us all on whatever road we travel. Here’s what we do. Through our workshop program, homeless and low-income participants are paid by the hour and earn a modest stipend for their work in our gardens and creative workshops. They grow

Our participants maintain several bee hives in the Denver metro area, which provide habitat for pollinators who are at risk. Our all-organic garden is maintained with castings from our worm bins and compost bins, which are tended all year long. We work to reuse and re-purpose materials in creating many of our products, and actively seek to reduce our â&#x20AC;&#x153;footprintâ&#x20AC;? on our planet. EarthLinks participants help create our line of sustainable products such as bee boxes, bat boxes, rain barrels, worm composting bins, soaps, jewelry made from gourds, flower bowls, cards and bookmarks. flowers and food, and create crafts, art, and various products. Our staff and volunteers walk alongside our participants, working together on basic life skills, accountability, employment training and goal setting. We work with other non-profits to provide the best services possible given the strains on all programs during these economic times. One example is our most recent floral design workshop which was made possible through a collaboration with The Empowerment Program. The ten graduates from this work-training program obtained paid internships at various florists and for some, this will lead to employment. We often collaborate with other organizations in obtaining services for our participants and in providing information and help to those organizations in return.

Of course, the product sales alone do not provide enough income to support our programs. For that, we rely on partnerships with organizations such as DeVelo Magazine, additional support from businesses and foundations, and individual donations. Over the past 15 years, we have formed community with the homeless, the at-risk and the poor. We believe in the healing powers of nature, providing a sense of community and empowering life changes. We are proud of our efforts in composting and providing habitat for other creatures who are in need of housing. We are committed to doing our part to heal Earth and one another. Our role in the community is to provide community. And with all of us working together, we can succeed.
