Annual Report
Fiscal Year September 2019 - August 2020
Mission Statement NCEFT is dedicated to helping children, adults, and military veterans with special needs reach beyond their boundaries through equine-assisted therapies, education, and research.
A Letter From Our Board Chair This has been a year of unprecedented challenges, daunting disruptions, and transformational change for all of us.
In my 26 years at NCEFT, I never imagined the kind of challenges our Center would face in fiscal year 2020. I also could have never anticipated the true depth of gratitude I feel for our donors’ Physical, steadfast dedication to our mission. Occupational & It is the mutual respect evident among the board, staff, and volunteers that enables NCEFT to excel as an organization. Especially during this year, the professionalism, dedication, creativity, and flexibility they have demonstrated has been inspiring! This collaborative spirit has fostered an atmosphere in which our clientele can grow and even thrive during this trying time.

Physical & Occupational Therapy Therapy is the core of NCEFT programming. Therapists conduct sessions in our indoor clinic and in our outdoor arena incorporating a horse’s dynamic movement. This therapy is not horseback riding; rather, it is intense rehabilitation that produces measurable therapeutic results and requires a physician’s prescription. A horse’s movement engages sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes such as improved core strength, balance, and sensory integration. The number of FY2020 sessions provided was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 shutdown and subsequent reopening to 50% capacity. However, these sessions are going strong with proper safety procedures, and we plan to increase our patient load as protocols allow in FY2021. Also, we plan to add a speech-language pathologist to our staff to offer all three disciplines.

“My daughter has been going to NCEFT since the age of two! She has developmental delays with no diagnosis at this time and has every doctor watching over her. It was her neurologist that recommended therapy, and I am so thankful that we discovered NCEFT... She cannot walk just yet, but is making tremendous strides and is getting stronger every week. I know one day she will be running to the arena to get on her horse! I am so grateful for the staff, volunteers, and everyone at NCEFT that make this such an amazing place!” -- Physical therapy patient parent
Adaptive Riding Adaptive Riding is recreational horseback riding and horsemanship lessons adapted to meet the individual requirements of a child or adult with special needs. Adaptive Riding utilizes mounted and unmounted activities, providing a unique combination of physical and emotional benefits. For clients with limited mobility or difficulty connecting with others, adaptive riding offers a chance to participate in a sport and interact with others via a shared activity. Adaptive Riding lessons are taught by PATH-certified instructors. Sessions include individual and group lessons, horsemanship sessions, and our Lava Lake Veteran groups. As with our other programs, the number of FY2020 sessions delivered was reduced by the COVID-19 shutdown. We anticipate more sessions will be conducted in FY2021.

“My son came to NCEFT with low tone issues from his disability. He has made incredible progress in strengthening his core and finding stability for his trunk. The staff at NCEFT has been supportive and helpful with all his needs since his first day. He has made enough progress that he can now participate in the other horsemanship activities such as tacking, untacking, feeding and general care of the animals. This has given him a real sense of confidence around large animals and how to take care of them. Thank you NCEFT!” -- Adaptive Riding client parent
Mental Health & Resilience Programs NCEFT’s Mental Health & Resilience Programs address a variety of mental health, emotional, and behavioral needs and are led by one or two licensed mental health practitioners and often include an equine expert and peer mentor. These sessions make different use of horses to facilitate change; most utilize ground-based horse interactions. Activities with horses are specifically designed to expand awareness, improve communication, ease distress, and build self-esteem. In July 2020, Dr. Rebecka Pearson joined our staff as Mental Health & Resilience Coordinator. We also launched new programs including online Mindfulness webinars and Mental Health and Resilience Workshops for groups such as first responders, adolescents, and women who have experienced cancer treatment. We plan to further expand programming in FY2021.

“The three days we all spent together was amazing...I realize that words are still limited to describe my experience and what I witnessed. One of my co-workers asked me where I had been last week because I wasn't at work. When I showed her a picture of me and [an NCEFT] horse, magic happened. The aggravation and anger left my body!! I noticed myself smiling and my body remembered the feelings that I had when the horse and I had that moment together. There is a bond I feel with [NCEFT] that I know will never be broken.” -- Resilience Workshop participant
Special Education School Programs For well over a decade, NCEFT’s Special Education School Program has provided field-study learning for children in special education classes. The Program is offered at no cost to our local public and independent schools. The program offers an outdoor educational experience to children who might otherwise never be exposed to a barn environment. For many, this is their first time interacting with horses. Students come for a series of four two-hour sessions on our property, rotating through activities including an adaptive horseback ride, an arts and crafts project, a ride on an ATV, and a carriage ride from our miniature horse. The School Program has been on hiatus since March due to the COVID-19 shutdown. We anticipate resuming in spring of 2021 once schools have re-opened and resumed field trips.

“What an amazing experience you have provided for our students. You are all so wonderfully generous and kind. Everyone was so gentle and sweet with them on the horse, Sebastian. Thank you so much for the arts & crafts. Thanks to everyone at NCEFT for all you do to help people. I know that this experience for my students will be remembered for years to come.” -- Special Education teacher
Horses & Donkeys NCEFT’s equines are essential members of our program teams. Each horse is unique in both personality and movement, offering characteristics that are critical components of treatment. Some are perfect for therapy sessions, others are ideal adaptive riding mounts, or some serve as ambassadors for our mission. All share the ability to connect with our patients and clients. Without them, the accomplishments of our clientele simply would not be possible. During FY2020, NCEFT lost two of our longest tenured and most beloved horses: Cody and Sebastian, the 2019 AHA Therapy Horse of the Year. These two horses were leaders of our herd and positively impacted the lives of countless patients. To begin to fill the gap from these losses, NCEFT added Aldi, a Norwegian Fjord mare to our herd. She has eagerly learned her job and is a favorite in sessions.

“Nothing lifts the spirit of a special needs parent like seeing their child, taller than they ever imagined, stronger than they knew, sauntering along on one of Earth’s most beautiful creatures, with gifted and compassionate people right beside them, making certain they work hard, have fun, and return to Earth again safe and sound.” -- Adaptive Riding parent
Volunteers Volunteers are the backbone of our programs and operations at NCEFT. Quite simply, NCEFT could not function without the dedicated volunteers who generously give their time to us. Each year, volunteers donate thousands of hours of service. Every moment spent with us is valued, appreciated, and meaningful. We welcome individuals, organizations, and corporate teams. Most volunteers are Side Walkers - integral members of our treatment teams. They walk beside the horse for the entire therapy session, and their job is to maintain the safety of the patient or client at all times. Other volunteers assist with keeping our 12-acre facility looking beautiful as well as supporting special events, such as our Gala. Once COVID-19 restrictions ease in FY2021, we look forward to welcoming our full volunteer corps back at our Center.

“I’ve side walked for NCEFT for a little over a year. Each client session is rewarding, yet it is hard to beat witnessing the transformation that happens over time, or in those special sessions when purely authentic giggles and smiles emerge. It has been inspiring to support a team of professionals and see their openness to work with each client where they are – physically, cognitively, or emotionally; a child, an adult, a Veteran. Of course, there are also the relationships with those wonderful horses!” -- Longtime side walker volunteer
FY2020 Financials Fiscal year 2020 was a year like no other. The first half of the year, NCEFT had stronger than expected contributions from our September 2019 Heroes and Horses, Jeans & Jewels Gala and our annual winter campaign. However, the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020 forced the cancellation of all programs and several major events, such as the Spring Fling Riding Showcase and Happy Trails Camp. The loss of three months of program revenue and the subsequent reopening at less than 50% capacity had a major impact on our revenue, while the majority of fixed expenses continued (personnel, facility, and horse expenses). However, due to the NCEFTStrong campaign, combined with expense reductions taken where possible, NCEFT ended a challenging fiscal year with a modest positive income. As we move through fiscal year 2021, we will continue to face the challenges brought on by the pandemic, including reduced clientele census, additional safety protocol and PPE expenses, and lowered program revenue projections. Now more than ever NCEFT must rely on the generous support of our community to enable us to bring hope and healing to so many. Every gift makes a difference. On behalf of the NCEFT Board of Directors and staff, thank you.
