Ugu

District

UGU Ugu District Municipality incorporates some of the best examples of unspoiled sub-tropical bushland and forest in KwaZuluNatal, as well as cultivated land and small rural villages, contrasted by bustling urban centres and major industrial complexes. Boasting a coastline of 112 kilometres, Ugu is a favourite tourist destination, and includes the well established coastal towns of Port Shepstone, Pennington, Margate and Scottburgh. The modern N2 highway runs through Ugu parallel to the sea, passing Port Shepstone, the seat of the District Municipality and the main commercial centre. The availability of housing, education, health and recreational facilities all contribute to an advantageous lifestyle. Amenities include internationally acclaimed golf courses, cinemas, social services and large shopping malls such as the 28 000m2 Shelly Beach Mall and the new South Coast Mall. Electricity is available throughout the district via Eskomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national grid and the high level of rainfall ensures that there is an abundance of water.

UMGUNGUNDLOVU Vision uMgungundlovu District Municipality will evolve into a viable and dynamic metropolitan area incorporating the Capital of KwaZulu-Natal with a vibrant economy, intergrated service delivery and improved quality of life for all its people. Well Resourced The uMgungundlovu District Municipality has an excellent infrastructure. A key feature is the N3 national road, which traverses the entire length of uMgungundlovu and offers substantial opportunity for a development corridor of national significance. The population of about 920 000 live in dwellings ranging from traditional farmland communities, informal rural settlements to upmarket urban areas. The region has a rich and complex natural environment with numerous resources accounting for 13.5% of KwaZulu-Natalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gross Geographical Product and 14.5% of the Provinceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s formal employment.

UTHUKELA The Soul of the Zulu Kingdom uThukela District Municipality, the soul of the Zulu kingdom, is a region that has an abundance of natural resources and opportunities. uThukela is highly accessible and linked to both the provincial and national economic centres by well-established provincial and national road networks. The N3 and N11 make uThukela an important entry point to the Province. The R74 is an alternative route from the Free State, and is an important tourist route linking the Drakensberg with the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal. uThukela has a strong district council that has performed an important developmental and administrative role in the region. The District is faced with challenges of low revenue base, poor infrastructure, limited access to services, high levels of poverty and unemployment, a skills shortage and low levels of education. Two municipalities in the uThukela District Municipality, namely Indaka and Okhahlamba local municipalities were identified for infrastructural development under Project Consolidate. Both local municipalities had high levels of backlogs in water, sanitation, electricity, refuse and housing. However, investment into infrastructure and services such as water, sports fields, community halls, roads and crĂ¨ches has benefited many rural communities.

UMZINYATHI Custodians of History and Culture uMzinyathi means â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;home of the buffaloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. uMzinyathi District has a total area of 8 079 square kilometers and is located in the north central areas of KwaZulu-Natal. The District lies between the main N3 corridor between Durban and Gauteng and the Coastal Corridor, running along the east coast. uMzinyathi includes some of the poorest and most underdeveloped rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, most notable the Msinga and Nquthu Municipalities. The population of the municipality numbers about 456 454 people. Of the population, 93% are rural and 7% are urban. The more developed urban areas include Dundee, which is the administrative seat of uMzinyathi District Municipality, and Greytown. Greytown can be viewed as a strong regional centre with substantial commercial and agricultural activity. In Nquthu and Msinga there is a dominance of the three peri-urban settlements of Tugela Ferry, Pomeroy and Keates Drift. The population densities of these three areas are higher than those of the rest of the area. The District has 17 Tribal Authorities. Endumeni is the only B Municipality that does not have any tribal land.The majority of the land (60%) is under the control of the Ingonyama Trust, situated mainly in Nquthu and Msinga. In general, the District has a temperate climate. Frost occurs only in parts of uMzinyathi in winter. Rainfall varies throughout - from more than 800 mm in Endumeni and Umvoti, to less than 400 mm in parts of Msinga. The topography is undulating, although some areas are steeper than others. uMzinyathi is bisected by several significant rivers, including the Tugela, Mooi, Umvoti, Blood and Buffalo.

AMAJUBA The Amajuba District Municipality with a total population of 468 000 people and serving an area of 6900 km2 is situated within the North Western corner of the KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa. The region is linked to the port cities of Richards Bay and Durban by rail and an airport with tarred runways and night landing systems, which puts Durban and Johannesburg within easy reach. The Amajuba region has abundant water, extremely competitive electricity tariffs and other service charges; a reliable skilled and unskilled labour force, a well developed transport infrastructure, first world educational, medical and community services; internationally-acclaimed tourism attractions; and enviable lifestyle. The northern and western mountainous edges of the District are regarded as high value landscapes, and are where oribi, wattled crane, Rudds lark and medicinal plants occur.

UTHUNGULU Where opportunities abound... The magnificent uThungulu District is located in the northeastern region of the KwaZulu-Natal Province on the eastern seaboard of South Africa. The District has the third highest population in the Province and stretches from the agricultural town of Gingindlovu in the south, to the uMfolozi River in the north and inland to the mountainous beauty of rural Nkandla. Tourism uThungulu is also well developed with an abundance of natural resources. It forms a gateway to some of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest game reserves and is rich in cultural heritage, offering a unique Zulu Kingdom experience. The uThungulu District also has a number of wetlands, the most notable being Lake Cubhu and the Greater uMhlathuze Wetlands to the south of Richards Bay at Esikhawini. A variety of over 350 bird species and approximately 75 waterbird species are found in Mtunzini in the uMlalazi Municipality, including the rare Palmnut Vulture, making it one of the best bird-watching locations in South Africa. The KwaBulawayo Tourism Development project was constructed by uThungulu as a means for uplifting the local communities in the culturally rich Umlalazi region. The region is home to King Shakaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s KwaBulawayo Military Capital, and is recognised as being one of the key sites of Zulu heritage.

Mission Tourism The beautiful Centecow Mission in Creighton is one of the largest mission centres established by the Trappist brothers in KwaZulu-Natal. Other Trappist stations are Reichenau, Emmaus, and Kavelear. Built in 1894 Emmaus Mission was the very last major achievement of Abbot Francis Pfanner. Abbot Francis passed away in 1909.

ETHEKWINI METRO A Caring and Liveable City The name Durban, which strictly speaking relates to the City of Durban, has come to be associated more broadly with the local government area officially known as the eThekwini Municipality. The eThekwini Municipality Area consists of 2297km2, of which 36% is rural and a further 29% is peri-urban. The municipal area stretches from Umkomaas in the south, including some tribal area in Umbumbulu, to Tongaat in the north, moving inland to Ndwedwe, and ends at Cato Ridge in the west. Significant strides have been made to address the key development challenges in eThekwini . While significant progress has been made in all areas, there is still some distance to go towards addressing the many challenges.
