Située entre terre et mer, à 2 heures de Paris et 10 minutes des plages, sur la route du Mont Saint-Michel, Caen, capitale de Basse-Normandie, est une métropole vivante et dynamique.

Standing between land and sea, 2 hours from Paris and 10 minutes from the beach, on the Mont Saint-Michel road, Caen, the capital of Lower Normandy, is a lively and dynamic metropolis.

Cité ducale fondée par Guillaume le Conquérant au XIème siècle, la ville a conservé, à travers le temps, la splendeur et le rayonnement voulus par le Duc-Roi. Abbayes, château puis hôtels particuliers, universités et autres académies témoignent du développement de la cité au fil des siècles, y compris après les terribles bombardements de 1944. Renaissant de ses cendres tel le phénix, symbole de son université, Caen a aussi su préserver le formidable patrimoine architectural épargné par la seconde guerre mondiale.

A ducal city founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, with the passing of time the city has kept the splendour and influence that the Duke and King intended. Abbeys, castles and mansions, universities and other academies are a reminder of how the city has developed over the centuries, including after the terrible bombings of 1944. Caen has risen from its ashes like the phoenix, the symbol of its university, and has also managed to preserve the impressive architectural heritage that was spared during the Second World War.

> Le château du Duc Guillaume (départ 14h00 – durée 1h15) Founded circa 1060, discover one of the largest fortified enclosures in Europe, a reminder of the great upheavals in the history of France, in particular the 100 Years War and the Revolution. Discover the relics of the Duke-King’s palace and the keep, the Church of St. George or the Exchequer room, the forerunner of our modern financial institutions and a rare example of Romanesque civil architecture.

Entre la plage et les évènements de 1944 faites une halte en centre-ville. Partez à la découverte du patrimoine millénaire de la ville aux cents clochers. Le riche héritage des siècles passés y est encore partout visible. Votre parcours démarre à l’hôtel d’Escoville, il se poursuit à l’église Saint-Pierre aux dimensions de cathédrale. Vous ferez halte dans le quartier autrefois malfamé du «Val-des-Gueux». Puis direction la rue Froide au charme moyenâgeux via la rue Saint-Pierre et ses maisons à pans de bois auxquels se marie avantageusement la pierre locale. Un voyage patrimonial entre tradition et modernité.

Between the beach and the events of 1944, make a stop in the city centre. Discover the thousand-year-old heritage of the city of a hundred bell towers. The rich legacy of bygone centuries can still be seen everywhere. Your trail starts at Hôtel d’Escoville, and continues on to the cathedral-sized Church of Saint-Pierre. Make a stop in “Val-des-Gueux”, once a notorious neighbourhood. Then head to Rue Froide, full of mediaeval charm, via Rue Saint-Pierre and its half-timbered houses made with local stone. Le patrimoine pour les enfants. Dans la lignée des grands conquérants normands qui jalonnent l’histoire de la province, emmenez vos enfants à la conquête de Caen et de son Château. Grâce à un petit livret, ils partiront de manière ludique à la découverte du patrimoine et de l’histoire de la ville. Les questions font appel au sens de l’observation et de l’orientation. Elles incitent également les enfants à lire, compter, dessiner… Un cadeau est offert à l’enfant s’il a correctement répondu aux questions (1 seul cadeau par livret). Ces parcours ludiques à effectuer en autonomie sous la surveillance d’adultes accompagnateurs, stimulent l’imagination, aiguisent le sens de l’observation, de l’orientation des enfants, les rendent sensibles et curieux de leur environnement… Conçus pour les enfants, les parents seront sans doute mis à contribution et ne seront pas les derniers à s’amuser.

Heritage for children. In the footsteps of the great Norman conquerors who have marked the history of the province since 911, take your children to conquer Caen and its Castle. Armed with a booklet, they can set off to discover the city’s heritage and history in a fun way. The questions call on their sense of observation and orientation. They also encourage children to read, count and draw... Children receive a gift if they answer all the questions correctly (1 gift per booklet only). These fun trails, to be completed independently under adult supervision, will stimulate children’s imagination, sharpen their sense of observation and orientation, and make them aware of and curious about their environment. They are designed for children but parents will undoubtedly be challenged too, and will also enjoy themselves.

Guillaume le Conquérant Né en 1027 à Falaise, Guillaume a 8 ans lorsqu’il devient Duc de Normandie. 20 ans plus tard, il décide de faire de Caen un site stratégique et son lieu de résidence privilégié. Il épouse Mathilde de Flandre, sa lointaine cousine, contre l’avis du Pape vers 1050. Pour obtenir le pardon de l’Eglise, il entreprend, en même temps que celle du château de Caen, la construction de deux abbayes : l’Abbaye-aux-Hommes et l’Abbaye-aux-Dames. Guillaume sera couronné roi d’Angleterre en 1066 suite à sa victoire sur le roi anglosaxon Harold lors de la sanglante bataille d’Hastings (racontée par la Tapisserie de Bayeux). Il devient alors Guillaume « le Conquérant ». Quatre ans après Mathilde, Guillaume meurt en 1087, à Rouen. Tous deux sont enterrés à Caen dans les abbayes qu’ils ont fondées : Guillaume à l’Abbaye-aux-Hommes et Mathilde à l’Abbaye-aux-Dames.

Ce circuit permet naturellement d’admirer les plus beaux monuments de la ville mais aussi des lieux plus discrets et plus secrets, des maisons, des rues, des cours... ces lieux qu’on aime visiter seul ou à plusieurs.

William the Conqueror Born in 1027 in Falaise, William was 8 when he became Duke of Normandy. 20 years later, he decided to make Caen a strategic site and his main place of residence. Around 1050, William married Matilda of Flanders, his distant cousin, going against the wishes of the Pope. To obtain the Church’s pardon, at the same time as building the mighty Caen Castle he built two abbeys: the Men’s Abbey (Abbaye-aux-Hommes) and the Ladies’ Abbey (Abbaye-aux-Dames). William was crowned King of England in 1066 following his victory over the Anglo-Saxon King Harold at the bloody Battle of Hastings (depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry). He then became William “the Conqueror”. Four years after Matilda, William died in Rouen in 1087. They were both buried in Caen in the abbeys they founded: William at the Men’s Abbey and Matilda at the Ladies’ Abbey.

Notre-Dame-de-la-Gloriette - Rue Saint-Laurent Archétype de l’architecture de la Contre-réforme, consacrée en 1689, Sainte-Catherine-des-Arts, est donnée à l’Université en 1762 lors de la suppression de l’ordre Jésuite. Rendue au culte en 1802 elle devient Notre-Dame. De plan basilical, sa façade est inspirée de l’église du Gesù de Rome. Elle est l’église de la ville présentant le mobilier le plus riche, le maître-autel surmonté d’un baldaquin provient de l’Abbaye-aux-Dames. La coupole du transept présente une glorification de Saint-Jean Eudes. L’église sert aujourd’hui de cadre aux auditions de la Maîtrise de Caen.

Sainte-Catherine-des-Arts, a typical example of Counter-Reform architecture consecrated in 1689, was given to the University in 1762 upon the suppression of the Jesuit order. It became Notre-Dame upon being given back to the order in 1802. It is built following a basilical ground plan and its façade was inspired by the Church of the Gesù in Rome. It is the city’s most opulently furnished church, and the high altar is topped with a baldachin from the Ladies’ Abbey. The cupola over the transept depicts a glorification of St. John Eudes. Today the church is used for concerts by the Maîtrise de Caen.

Notre-Dame-de-Froide-Rue - Place Pierre Bouchard Il ne subsiste rien de l’église romane primitive. Les différentes parties de l’édifice s’échelonnent du XIVe au XVIe siècle. La particularité de cette église est d’avoir deux nefs accolées qui communiquent entre elles. Autre caractéristique sur sa façade : un porche avec un beau portail flamboyant du XVe siècle et un curieux escalier en spirale qui ne conduit nulle part.

Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux - Rue Arcisse de Caumont Ses fondations remontent sans doute au Xe siècle. Exposée le long des remparts de la ville, elle fut reconstruite après les sièges anglais de 1346 et 1417. Ruiné en 1944, l’édifice conserve une tour lanterne octogonale de la première moitié du XVe siècle et, adossée au chevet, une statue équestre du début du XIIIe siècle représentant l’empereur Constantin.

Built from the 14th to the 16th century to replace a Romanesque church, this edifice in the Flamboyant Gothic style also contains a superb nave and a curious lantern tower with sculpted walls, harking back to Renaissance times.

Construite en remplacement de l’église sise au bas des Fossés SaintJulien détruite le 7 juillet 1944 lors du dernier bombardement de la ville. Le chantier débute en 1954 et l’église est consacrée en 1959. Bâtie suivant les plans de Henry Bernard, toute entière de béton armé, elle adopte un plan en mandorle évoquant « le grain de froment avec son germe, l’autel ». C4 Its foundations most probably date back to the 10th century. Exposed along ramparts of the city, it was rebuilt after the English sieges of 1346 and 1417. The building was reduced to rubble in 1944, but retains an octagonal lantern tower from the first half of the 15th century and, standing against the chevet, an equestrian statue of the Emperor Constantine from the turn of the 13th century.

Construit du XIVe au XVIe siècle pour remplacer une église romane, cet édifice de style gothique flamboyant possède également à l’intérieur une nef superbe et une curieuse tour-lanterne aux parois sculptées, d’époque Renaissance.

Nothing remains of the primitive Romanesque church. The different parts of the building were built between the 14th century and the 16th century. The distinctive feature of this church is its two adjoining naves that run side by side. Another feature on its façade: a porch with a beautiful Flamboyant 15th-century door and a curious spiral staircase leading to nowhere.

This was built to replace the church that stood at the bottom of the Fossés Saint-Julien and was destroyed on 7 July 1944 during the last bombing raid on the city. Work began in 1954 and the church was consecrated in 1959. Built according to plans by Henry Bernard and entirely made of reinforced concrete, it follows a Mandorla plan symbolising “the grain of wheat with its germ, the altar”. The church walls are formed of 4500 glass slabs in 50 different colours. The organ was bought second-hand and comes from Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux in Strasbourg.

Saint-Michel-de-Vaucelles - Rue de Branville -

Au début du XIIe siècle, une église remplace un sanctuaire dédié à Saint-Michel, érigée sur ce lieu élevé après l’apparition en songe de l’Archange à l’évêque d’Avranches. De cette église romane subsiste la tour latérale et la nef. Cette dernière fut remaniée au XVIe siècle. Le chœur, au chevet plat, plus élevé que la nef, est reconstruit au XVe siècle en gothique flamboyant.

At the turn of the 12th century, a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Michael was replaced by a church, which was built at this high place after the Archangel appeared to the Bishop of Avranches in a dream. The side tower and the nave of the this church are still standing. The latter was reworked in the 16th century. The choir, with its flat chevet, higher than the nave, was rebuilt in the 15th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style.

Saint-Nicolas - Rue Saint-Nicolas -

Le dépouillement de l’édifice où les rythmes de l’architecture constituent le seul décor, son exceptionnelle clarté font de l’église Saint-Nicolas un précieux et parfait témoignage de l’architecture religieuse romane de Normandie.

Saint-Pierre - Place Saint Pierre -

The construction of this church around 1083 was a consequence of the foundation of the Men’s Abbey by William the Conqueror. The sobriety of the building, where the architectural patterns are the only decoration, and its exceptional clarity make the Church of Saint-Nicolas a precious and perfect example of Normandy’s Romanesque religious architecture.

Construite du XIIIe au XVIe siècle, elle joue sur la transition des styles : gothique rayonnant et flamboyant puis Renaissance. Possédant un superbe clocher du XIVe siècle, de près de 80m de haut, elle bénéficie actuellement d’un programme de restauration.

Built from the 18th to the 16th century, it plays on the transition of styles: Rayonnant and Flamboyant Gothic, then Renaissance. Boasting a superb 14th-century bell tower, nearly 80m high, it is currently undergoing restoration work.

Saint-Sauveur-du-Marché - Place St Sauveur -

La construction de cette église débute au XIe siècle par les parties basses de la croisée du transept et par le 1er étage du clocher. Le 2ème étage de la tour est construit à la fin du XIe siècle et garde encore des proportions romanes. La nef de style gothique flamboyant voûtée d’ogives et le chœur, de style renaissance datent de la fin du XVe siècle.

The construction of this church began in the 11th century with the lower parts of the transept crossing and the first floor of the bell tower. The 2nd floor of the tower was built in the late 11th century and still displays its Romanesque proportions. The Flamboyant Gothic-style nave with its ribbed vaulted ceiling and the Renaissance-style choir date from the late 15th century.

La façade sévère donnant sur la voie publique cache l’un des plus typiques Hôtels Particuliers du XVIe siècle. Dans la cour, loggia, hautes toitures, lanternons et lucarnes sont caractéristiques de la Renaissance italienne. Ruiné en 1944, l’Hôtel a fait l’objet d’importantes restaurations. Il est aujourd’hui le siège de l’Office de Tourisme de Caen.

L’Hôtel de Colomby - 6, rue des Cordeliers -

The stern façade overlooking the road hides one of the most typical private town houses of the 16th century. In the courtyard, loggia, high roofs, turrets and skylights are characteristic features of the Italian Renaissance. Reduced to rubble in 1944, the Hôtel has since undergone major restoration work. Today it is the headquarters of Caen Tourist Office.

Cet Hôtel Particulier de la famille de Colomby, bâti au XVIe siècle, fut agrandi au début du siècle suivant d’un grand pavillon sur la rue. Sa haute toiture, sa tourelle carrée en encorbellement et son portail, qui sont les seuls éléments que l’on peut voir depuis la rue, lui donnent cet aspect sévère et défensif.

This private town house, owned by the Colomby family and built in the 16th century, was extended at the turn of the next century, with the addition of a large house on the street. Its high roofs, square corbelled turret and door, the only parts that can be seen from the street, give it an austere and defensive appearance.

L’Hôtel de Mondrainville - Rue de la Monnaie -

Le sieur Etienne Duval de Mondrainville a fait construire cette demeure qui fut détruite en 1944. La cour de la Monnaie tire son nom du privilège obtenu du roi, en 1550, de pouvoir battre monnaie. Seul subsiste de nos jours, le pavillon de plaisance que l’on peut voir depuis la place Pierre Bouchard.

Mr Etienne Duval de Mondrainville had this residence built, which was destroyed in 1944. The Cour de la Monnaie is named after the privilege to be able to mint coins, granted by the King in 1550. The leisure house is all that remains today, visible from Place Pierre Bouchard.

L’Hôtel de Than - Boulevard Maréchal Leclerc -

Construit un peu avant l’Hôtel d’Escoville, vers 1520-1525, il constitue lui aussi un témoin du Caen de la Renaissance. Les caractères de son style flamboyant se reconnaissent grâce aux rampants des fenêtres ornées de crochets et d’animaux. L’Hôtel abrite aujourd’hui un Centre d’Information et de Recrutement de la Gendarmerie Nationale.

Built a little before the Hôtel d’Escoville, circa 1520-1525, this is also a reminder of Renaissance Caen. Its flamboyant style can be seen in its window pitches, which are decorated with crockets and animals. Today the Hôtel houses an Information and Recruitment Centre for the National Gendarmerie.
