21 A PAIR OF MR CHAIRS, BY LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE FOR KNOLL INTERNATIONAL, with original tanned leather seats on tubular chrome frame bearing the Knoll studio stamp to the base. Born in Germany, Mies van der Rohe was the Director of the Bauhaus from 1930-1933. He immigrated to the United States in 1938 and continued his design career. He is responsible for a number of famous architectural projects including the Seagram Building in New York, the Berlin National Gallery, and 860-880 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. Three names come up when discussing the origins of the bent-steel cantilevered chair. Marcel Breuer is widely credited with pioneering the exploration of the material, Mart Stam seems to be the first to conceive a “chair without back legs”, and Mies van der Rohe is remembered as the one who made it beautiful. It is believed that Mart Stam described his idea — a continuous loop of steel (he used a thinner gauge gas pipe in the earliest versions) with a cantilevered seat – at a meeting of the Werkbund in 1926. In attendance were Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe, both of whom were inspired to design cantilever chairs. Mies replaced the right angles on the front legs with a graceful curve which had the advantage of increasing elasticity while preventing material fatigue. Mies first showed the MR 10 and MR20 at the Stuttgart Weissenhof Estate – a seminal Werkbund exhibition, which first brought modernist works to the public, with buildings designed by Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and others. The MR40 Lounge Chair was designed in 1931. This lounge takes advantage of the aesthetic qualities of tubular steel, a supposedly utilitarian material, while exuding luxury through the contrast between padded leather and the minimalism of its chrome frame.

The following lots (76-145) come from Interior Designer Peter Johnson’s Dublin shop on Lombard Street West
Interior designer Peter Johnson, was one of Ireland’s best, noted for his brilliant eye, exceptional taste and ability to create interiors that were relaxing as well as elegant and stylish. The Johnson stamp can be seen on some of Ireland finest spots, among them the K-Club, Castletown House, Farmleigh Lodge and Kelly’s Hotel in Rosslare. Then there were the people lucky enough to have him work on their own homes, including former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds and his wife, Kathleen. Johnson had many exceptionally happy clients, many of whom became lifelong friends. Pieces were sourced on trips to Copenhagen, Helsinki, Rome and latterly France, where Peter and Natasha converted a garage in the Dordogne into a furniture store and home. Johnson was one of the first designers in Ireland to popularise the Scandinavian design aesthetic, mixed with mid-century modern. Repainted, restored and reupholstered, the pieces were then destined for the shop on Cow’s Lane, which closed in 2009, and also the showroom on Lombard Street West. “Yes, they were to sell,” says Tash, “but he only bought what he liked. Some were so nice, I hung on to a few.” Bill Kelly of Kelly’s Hotel was a long standing client. “My mother came across his work,” recalls Bill Kelly. “He’d finished a show apartment in Dublin, and Mum thought it was fantastic. So when I came back to work at Kelly’s 30 years ago, Peter was already installed, and worked with us ever since.” So what makes his work so special? “He had a real artist’s eye,” says Kelly. “Not only for decorating, but hanging paintings too, and he loved mixing colours in a room. You’d never get matching bedspreads and curtains with him. Instead, he’d mismatch to give a real sense of style, and a sense of comfort and atmosphere.” Kelly’s has just opened a Peter Johnson Suite in his honour.

79 THE PERNILLA 3 LOUNGE CHAIR, BY BRUNO MATHSSON FOR BRUNO MATHSSON INTERNATIONAL, 2009, in beech and Tundra green upholstery, bearing makers stamp.
Bruno Mathsson was a Swedish furniture designer and architect with ideas rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition. He was one of the first Scandinavians to embrace undulating, biomorphic forms in furniture. His early pieces, such as the “Pernilla” series of chairs, incorporate dramatically Bruno Matheson flowing bent beech wood frames, making them some of the most instantly recognizable works of 20th-century design.
He was also a pioneer of ergonomics – he is said to have based the contours of his chairs on the impression his body made when he sat in a snow bank – and used supple, accommodating woven webbing for seats.

84 THE JETSON 66 CHAIR, by Bruno MATHSSON for Bruno Mathsson International, in tan leather on chrome circular base, bearing label. Bruno Mathsson had always considered wood to be the material he believed most suited his ideas for the design of modern furniture. However in the 1960s he employed an entirely new suite of materials including stainless tubular steel. As with his bent laminated furniture he strived to minimise the amount of padding required allowing the form to provide the right level of support. In 1965, inspired by the advent of the space age he designed an easy chair which he exhibited for the first time at an exhibition in Malmö a year later. The futurist appearance of Mathsson’s design gained the chair the nickname of Jetson after the American cartoon series “The Jetsons”. The chair was relaunched by Bruno Mathsson International in 2005 to the designer’s original specification as Jetson 66.

Jack Nicholson in Carnal Knowledge
The Corona Chair was designed in 1961. The original consisted of a wooden skeleton on which a series of oval cushions provided the seat and the rising back. The idea was that it would allow the body to relax in various positions. The following year, as the result of cooperation between Volther and the recently established Erik Jørgensen furniture factory, a new model with a chrome-plated steel frame was marketed in 1964. The Corona Chair was used at the 2002 EU Summit in Copenhagen, the year after Volther died. Today, with its elliptical, blow-up cushions, annual sales total almost 3,000 a year. €1400-1800

90 THE MINA CHAIR, BY BRUNO MATHSSON FOR BRUNO MATHSSON INTERNATIONAL, the ash frame woven in hessian, stamped by the maker. Bruno Mathsson had introduced his three basic chair models, easy, working and lounge chair (Model 36), in the late 1930’s and as early as 1942 had designed a variation of the easy chair (called Model 42) in which he combined the seat, back and front legs to form a single curved frame of laminated wood. However, the idea was dropped as the glue was not strong enough to hold the structure of such a complex shape together. In 1978, with stronger glues available, Mathsson developed his original idea further developing both the work chair, which was named Mina and the easy chair named Miranda. Both Miranda and Mina have a softer leading edge to the front of the seat to aid blood circulation. €600 - 900 90A THE MINA CHAIR, BRUNO MATHSSON, in leather. €600 - 900

92 THE SAFARI CHAIR, DANISH, BY Kaare KLINT FOR CARL HANSEN, in ash and natural canvas, stamped ‘Made in Denmark, no. 5570’. Kaare Klint is regarded as the father of Danish Design, with the focus very much on ‘form follows function’. With The Safari Chair he was captivated by the chairs an American cinematographer and his wife had used on their African safari and set out to transform the portable knockdown archetype into an elegant design for modern interiors. Klint delved into simplifying, clarifying and refining the chair’s composition, exhibiting his final Safari Chair design in 1933 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition. While inspired by its British predecessor, Klint’s sophisticated, lightweight chair is defined by his signature systematic approach, fine craftsmanship, well-conceived proportions, and remarkable material effects.

Patrick Scott Patrick Scott is exceptional in Irish cultural history for the range and quality of his work across the fields of art and design for well over half a century. He initially trained as an architect, and for 15 years worked with Michael Scott in that capacity. While he never really harboured architectural ambitions, and was much more inclined towards solving design problems, there is perhaps an architectonic quality to the geometric compositions of his paintings. From designing Christmas Cards to the railway carriage livery for CIE, or devising the gallery setting for the first Rosc exhibition of international art in 1967, he brought a consistently spare, practical sensibility to bear on the task at hand. In many ways, that sensibility is at its purest in his paintings and his other personal work. By the beginning of the 1960s, he was set on a course that led to what can be termed his mature style. At that stage he made a series of transitional paintings that are also exceptional and fully achieved in their own right. Their transitional character lies in the way they refer back to the soft, amorphous works he had recently created by soaking pigment into raw, unprimed canvas. He was inspired by the saturated landscapes of the midland bogs. But, while his ‘Device’ paintings hark back, they also look forwards in refining the motif of the circle, evident in his painting almost from the beginning, establishing its pre-eminence in his work for the rest of his life. He greatly admired the Japanese flag, a red solar disc against a white ground, and what it exemplified: a pared-down, Zen-influenced aesthetic of formal simplicity, naturalness and tranquillity. Aidan Dunne The following works by Patrick Scott (lots 150-157) come from a Private Collection in New York. They were acquired directly from the artist over a number of years and visits, being lifelong friends. The collection was subsequently bequeathed to the current owner and is offered for sale for the first time.

161 William Scott CBE RA 1913-1989 STIIL LIFE WITH 8 FORMS (1970) Oil on canvas, 48" x 78" (122 x 198cm), signed, inscribed & dated verso. Provenance: Falchi Arte Moderna, Milan (label verso); Private Collection; New Art Centre, London; Bernard Jacobson Gallery (label verso), London; Private Collection. Exhibition: Milan, Falchi Arte Moderna, William Scott, October 1972, cat. no.3, illustrated in the catalogue; Dublin, Kerlin Gallery, William Scott, 11 October - 9 November 1996, cat. no.7. (label verso). Literature: Bernard Jacobson Gallery, William Scott, Modern British Masters Vol.1, 1990, no.16, illustrated in colour; Norbert Lynton, William Scott, Thames and Hudson, London, 2004, illustrated plate 216, p.340. The renowned painter William Scott was born in Greenock in 1913 in fairly impoverished circumstances. His mother, Agnes, was Scottish, but his father William, a sign painter and decorator, was from Enniskillen and was always keen to return there which he did, alone, in 1924, sending instructions to his wife to follow him with their children. Sadly, just three years later he was killed when attempting to rescue someone trapped in a burning building. Scott’s first technical instruction was from his father. He was lucky to find a gifted art teacher, Kathleen Bridle, who was acquainted with modern painting. Attracted by the promise of free tuition, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London. He married a fellow student, Hilda Mary Lucas. They moved around, spending time in France and briefly in Dublin before eventually settling in England. Scott worked at refining a form of simplified realism in his painting and, by the end of the 1940s, was developing a distinctively personal approach to still life, landscape and the figure. While he was open to aspects of abstraction, it was always important to him that his art kept its feet on the ground and not become purely abstract. Gradually still life became dominant but, as with Giorgio Morandi, while his ostensible subject was still life, there was a universality to his treatment of it. Humble utensils, crockery, pots and pans and foodstuffs attain a majestic, monumental quality in his beautifully poised compositions. His mastery of three basic pictorial components – line, colour and form – was always assured and was, later on, influenced by his admiration for Japanese and Egyptian art. By the late 1950s he had found his pictorial language, which he went on to explore and expand until the early 1980s. Aidan Dunne €200000 - 300000

Alan Davie was a Scottish painter and printmaker. He trained at the Edinburgh College of Art and was as much in his element as a jazz musician, scuba diver, gliding enthusiast, jewellery maker and poet as he was as painter. Inspired by the American Abstract Expressionists, Surrealists and the Cobra Group, he developed his own unique form of expression combining mythic imagery, enigmatic symbols and, later, taking inspiration from African and Oceanic Art as well as Zen Buddhism. By the 1960s Davie had been recognised internationally as a new radical force in modern painting. Already with a New York show to his name, retrospectives at both the Wakefield City Art Gallery and the Whitechapel Art Gallery, and having represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1958, he was hailed by critic Alan Bowness as, alongside Francis Bacon, one of the most influential artists of his time. His paintings were sought after by leading institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and Tate, London, as well as major collectors, most significantly Peggy Guggenheim who he met at the 1948 Venice Biennale. Davie combined imagery derived from different cultures with a love of music and language, he created works which were a complex celebration of creativity. €6000 - 9000 87

Emmett Kane was born in 1970 in Castledermot, Co. Kildare – a village in the south-east of Ireland filled with archaeological remnants dating back to the 6th Century and history; round towers, high crosses and the ruins of a Franciscan friary. Coming from a long line of master craftsmen, Kane was encouraged by his father to experiment with woodturning. He joined the family business where he perfected his technical approach. Kane said ‘a strong influence on my work has been growing up and working in a rural landscape comprised of immense natural beauty and many exceptional archaeological features dating from the 6th Century’ In the 1970s Kane was exposed to the work of American wood turners David Ellsworth, Giles Gilson (1942-2015) and Mel Lindquist (1911-2000) who transformed the landscape of woodturning in the 1970s and 80s. David Ellsworth was instrumental in elevating the wood vessel as an object of art and contemplation. As an artist as well as a craftsman, Emmet Kane tries to ‘push and break the boundaries of woodturning in scale and incorporate other media into his pieces’. Ref: This note was compiled from ‘A Journey’, twenty-seven years of the work of Irish woodturner Emmett Kane by Dr. Jennifer Goff, who curated the National Museum of Irelands exhibition of the same title. 95

223 John the Painter SAVOY PART 1 (1998) Acrylic on canvas, 63" x 60" (160 x 152cm). Provenance: Sold deVeres, 2007. John the Painter (so named because of the need to respect his privacy) has been in care since the 1960s, living in a communal and often difficult environment for most of his adult life. Art has given him a means to explore his own feelings and thoughts about that life, surprisingly creating a body of artwork that is exuberantly colourful and celebratory. When he was in hospital, a nurse, Sheila Holland, invited Cork Community Artlink to work with the patients. He began work on sheets of paper and card, but quickly grew to painting on old sheets supplied by Artlink and the hospital to satisfy his need for bigger canvases. When presented with a blank canvas, he goes to it immediately, with a clear sense of what he wants to do. His confident approach to composition and colour is envied by mainstream artists who have seen his work. Much of John’s work is autobiographical, showing vivid memories of Cork in the 1960s before he went into hospital. See imma.ie €600 - 900

Definitions In these Conditions, de Veres Art Auctions, who act as auctioneers and agents for the vendor, are called ‘the auctioneers’ (which expression shall be deemed to include their servants and agents) and the representative of de Veres conducting the auction is called ‘The Auctioneer’. 2. Third Party Liability Every person at or on the ‘Auctioneers’ premises or at any premises being used by the Auctioneer at any time shall be deemed to be there entirely at his/her own risk and shall have no claim whatsoever against the Auctioneers or their servants or agents in respect of any accident or incident which may occur nor any injury, damage or loss howsoever arising and whether or not same is the subject of any allegation of negligence. 3. General Whilst the Auctioneers make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogue and the description of any lot: (a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lots or lots is sold by the vendor with all faults, imperfections and errors of description. (b) Any claim under any Statute must be received in writing by the Auctioneers within three months of the sale. (c) The Auctioneers shall not be liable for consequential or resultant loss or damage whether sustained by a Vendor or a Purchaser or the owner of any item or their respective servants and agents arising in any circumstances whatsoever and irrespective of any claim made by any party as to negligence or lack of care of the Auctioneers or any part acting on their behalf. (d) Lots marked with † are those which deVeres hold a financial interest in. 4. The Auction (a) The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving any reason or previous notice. (b) The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute had arisen. He has absolute discretion to settle it or to re-offer the lot. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance or bidding or refuse a bid. (c) Each lot is put up for sale subject to any reserve price placed by the vendor.
