Hello // Namaste! I am Devi. I am a product and service design student, currently finishing my 5th year at L’Institut Supérieur de Design(ISD), France. My biggest inspirations are my experiences, which influence my actions as a designer!
Design for me is all about creating fun stories and experiences not just for the user, but also for myself! I believe that each project teaches us something whic in turn adds up our own design story. I am excited to share my design story with you!

Understanding the problems Even after extremely high awareness about the benefits of sustainable lifestyle, why do people not follow it?
Overwhelmed by the internet
Confused where to start
Lack of time
Perception that it’s expensive
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Answering the problems Main aim is to create a holistic solution including the community, self-awareness and gamification. Instead of creating another app, my goal was to integrate a challenge for the user.
Testing different mock-ups with the users. Folio’21 // Devi Gophan

Choosing convenience over sustainability Building habits will take you a long way
“Seems like a lot of effort and time”
“I don’t know where to start!”
Confinements due to COVID, forced us to conduct research remotely. Though it entailed multiple challenges, I discovered new methods of research and organisation through Miro boards, online interviews and special toolkits created for the project. Folio’21 // Devi Gophan

Zero Waste Design Contest ’2019 How can we create a sustainable toy, which evolves with the baby’s needs and produces zero waste? TEAM PROJECT - 4 Months // Product Design || Service Design
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
+ Focus on one sense + Reduce mobiles going to waste + No electronic elements + Involve parents in the process
Mobiles for babies are bad? Mobiles with lights and sounds are bad for the babies as they overstimulate the baby. The ones with automatic movement are worst as well, because the baby cannot concentrate and link the movement. It is important for the mobile to have minimal functions.
“Create a sustainable mobile which evolves as the baby grows and helps in the development of the baby”
“Light, sound and automation in mobiles overstimulates the baby” Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
What do babies need? In order to understand what the baby needs, we met with a pediatrician. He mentioned that it was important for us to answer to baby’s needs as he/she evolves. Focusing on one attribute at a time.

Thesis Project
Connect families How can we make families talk about sensitive issues and create a safe space for discussion? PERSONAL PROJECT - Ongoing // Product Design || Service Design
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
“1 in 5 teens between the age of 13-18 already have or will have a serious mental illness.”
Let’s not talk about that Teenagers find it difficult to communicate with their parents, especially about sensitive topics like death, relationships and sexual health.
+ Less conversations + Form their own perceptions + Learn from their parents + Build up these topics in their head
Reports and personal experience suggest that kids find it easier to cope with these issues if they talk about it with their families.
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
But why don’t families talk? After talking to experts, teenagers and parents, the main reasons why families are afraid to have these conversations are:
Unable to express their thoughts and feelings
Scared to approach these subjects
Easier to talk about someone else’s situation
Perception that experts handle better
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Not every family is the same Every family has a different comfort level, hence with the help of psychologist we defines 5 stages of conversations between families.

Stage 4
Stage 5
Talking about daily life
Talking about likes, dislikes, interests
Talking problems, issues at work, in family
Talking about mildly sensitive issues, opinions and views
Talking about sensitive issues like death, mental health, relationships
“Hence, the goal is to create an evolving and personalised solution for each family that not only invites families to come together and have a discussion, but also aid them in facilitating the discussion.”
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Creating solutions After the research, my major focus was on creating solutions that are playful yet have a sensitive undertone. All the solutions act as a trigger for the family to come together and start the discussions.
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Testing different forms
Making trees & stones
Creating the game I started out with finalising the form and shape of the base. After that I created game rules and cards to have preliminary test with users.
Creating gameplay
Testing gameplay
1:1 Playable Mock-up

Toku
A dining table center-piece that initiates conversations about sensitive topics in a metaphorical way.
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Let’s Play!
1
Place the tree top color of topic of your choice
2
Pick card of the corresponding color and read it out
3
Discuss about what is written on the card. Express yourself.
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Let’s Play!
4
Write your negative feelings, fears, inhibitions on the stone
5
Place the stone on the sand. As you answer each card, keep placing stones.
6
Once you are done discussing for the day, you topple the stones!
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Grow your own forest!
Defeat your inhibitions!
As the conversations between your family increase, your forest will grow!! The colors will also give you an idea of which topic is the most discussed.
Toppling the stones with your fears written symbolises that all these problems could be easily defeated through discussions.
Placed on the dining table as dining tables are where the family comes together more often to talk about things.
Folio’21 // Devi Gophan
Not finished? Since it is an ongoing thesis project, there are a few more areas where refinement is to be done.
Improving the gameplay
Expand for different family situations
Defining Materials
Feedback from users and experts

Internship Experience During my 5 month internship at the Tata ELXSI design studio in Bangalore, I worked on design projects ranging from electronics, space design to experience design and UX research. I had the opportunity to work on multiple projects and understand different work methodologies under different project leads. This internship taught me to be more autonomous and confident about my work. My time at Tata ELXSI also strenghthened my interest in service design and UX.
+ 7 projects for 6 international brands + Constant collaboration with different design departments

+ Experience design + Service design + UI/UX + Collaboration with Electrolux
Sustainable Food Habits “How can we create new user experience to bring value to food and promote sustainable food habits?” This was a school project done in collaboration with Electrolux. Senior Designer from Electrolux, Audrey Yreix, constantly mentored us throughout the project. We also got a chance to visit Electrolux headquarters in Stockholm and present our project there. Through this project I learned the importance of user feedbacks and storyboarding. It also strengthened my UI design skills. I also learned how to collaborate on a project with a partner, keeping their needs in mind.

+ Competition brief + Service design + UI/UX
Design for good “How might solutions support young donors to radically engage in and reimagine the next generation of giving?” Ongoing Project This was a 1 week project as a part of the Open Ideo challenge in partnership with Better Giving Studio. As my entry, I created a service which will enable the younger generations to use the power of social media to encourage and boost local businesses around them. The results for the competition are yet to be announced.
