EVOLUTION OF GOLD NECKLACE DESIGNS Jewellery has and always will be an extremely important part of all our lives. Since a young age, we are conditioned to accept jewellery not only as a part of self-grooming, but also as an important part of our socio-cultural framework. Be it in our everyday social interactions or special festivals and occasions, dressing up in special jewellery is a very important aspect of our lives. And out of all the jewellery pieces there are, the necklaces assume prime importance, mainly because of the position of pride it occupies on the body. Add to the that the sheer versatility of the jewellery and you have the most important piece of jewellery there is. Let’s take a quick look at how gold necklace designs and gold pendant designs have changed throughout the ages. For any woman, a necklace and specially a gold necklace holds special importance. Since a very early age, we all dream of finding that one perfect necklace, complete with the right pendant design as well. Let’s go back to the good old days of classic gold necklace designs, back in the day, chunky necklaces were all the rage and if you wanted to buy a gold necklace, there was no other option other than a thick necklace. The idea of ‘more is more’ also played an important role where people felt that the thicker your necklace the better it was. Hence, people aspired and waited to buy painfully heavy necklaces that came in typically chunky patterns. On the other hand, the pendants too were incredibly heavy and painful. These necklaces were great for special occasions but made absolutely no sense when it came to daily usage. In time, things changed. A lot of innovation took place in the technology of jewellery making and the gold artisans of Sri Lanka learnt how to create thinner and finer pieces of jewellery. This led to a revolution of sorts in the kind of jewellery designs and patterns we produced as a nation. For the first time, jewellery designers could experiment with different, intricate styles and patterns and the concept of thin and lightweight pendant designs and necklace designs emerged. The market too responded very well and specially the younger generation adopted this shift in trend with open arms. People started falling in love with the new intricate necklace patterns and gold pendant designs. On the other hand, people also realized the practicality of using thin, lightweight necklaces for their everyday lives. Nowadays, when it comes to necklace designs and gold pendant designs, you have a mindboggling variety of products out there. It all comes down to a matter of personal choice. On the one hand you have the new age lightweight designs. While on the other, you have the classic chunky patterns with an interesting modern twist to them. But no matter where you look, there has definitely been a massive shift in the way we wear and use jewellery, thus continuing our romance with gold jewellery.
