Picking a architectural element from sites like Modera and Adalaj- STAIRS and designing a space consisting of just this one element. My approach was to play with scale and while, the steps be multi-functional, according to varying scales (used for sitting, climbing, leaning on, upside-down etc), the space as a whole will serve one single purpose- a display exhibition stall.

To select a space on campus, study it and then create a space that evokes an opposite feeling. The chosen space was dark, scary and mysterious- that was turned into a open, happy, yet mysterious one. Use of existing elements of space, reflection, illusions, lighting, and curiosity led to designing an entire journey that ends in an exalted feeling as a reward.

The Queen’s pavilion at Sarkhej Roza was chosen and was personified as the queen herself. The forgotton building was lit up in the various moods of a forgotton queen, taking inspiration from Rasa theory.

A practice of making measured drawings for our projects, is one habit, we are ardently taught to follow. These drawings not only serve as visualisations, but also as tools to illustrate better understanding about the details of a given space or structure. A basic understanding of using Autocad has enabled me to do that.

After going through tutorials of 3DS Max of use of basic tools, a series of assignments were given that included their application as well. The alien ship was a small assignment- explorative in nature, while the art gallery seen above was modelled to the last detail and a walkthrough using the camera function too, was created. During the course of two years as an exhibition student, I have been exposed to various materials and their processes. Structural theories were applied and an attempt to understand the catenery curve was made by making a life size swing as group exploration. Also, the canopy made in a smaller group reflected our explorations on different possibilities of making rigid materials look organic.

The site I chose to study and work on was Gulbai Tekra a.k.a. Hollywood Basti in Ahmedabad. The task was to map the history of the place and also investigate, first hand, the cultural ethnography of the place. The medium I chose was film and I tried to convey my research by putting together how the real estate and commercial circle looks at this area, what the common people think of it and finally the real story along with a hint of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s negligence and injustice towards this area.

My case study brought to light a prevalent issue of a road being built overnight by the government, without proper notice to the residents. Their houses were demolished and people were evicted and given houses someplace away. My main aim in this project was to bring to light this very reality of injustice and challenge the attitude of the rest of the city towards this place. Hence, my first idea was to create a feeling of encroachment among the common people so they can empathise. Through my installation, the person travelling, sees himself, along with his vehicle, in a place where there were homes of people before.

Huts that also look like beheaded people that are buried

The lamppost that looks like a cross on a grave

the huts burdened under concrete

The above is a representation of another idea I had. I saw ‘going deeper in the earth’ as ‘going back in time’. The lamppost is the ground level. As you go deeper, first you see the concrete dust, then the tar, and further, the rocks. Next you start seeing the huts, weighed down by the rocks. Further, you see the leaves that represent the forest on which these houses were built. And finally the red earth.

The road with the disclaimer standing there silently

Next, I tried to also target people walking on the road, not just those with vehicles. The idea of a disclaimer struck me and it was made into a satirical one rather than a normal notice, so that it catches more attention, when seen everyday. My last idea was more striking than subtle. The bulldozer standing in the middle of the road carrying broken houses was used as a visually striking image. But keeping the sentiments of people living there in mind, this was one of my last ideas I would put forward.

The embroidered pieces displayed against their natural background.

The SEWA community museum was to house the age old traditional embroidered textiles and clothing that SEWA had collected over the years from the artisans of Northern Gujarat. The museum is built within the Northern Gujarat terrirtory itself, and hence, has a strong connect to the villages around. The idea was to display these embroidered textiles as they are displayed in the local village houses, particularly with an intention to decorate the house during festivals.

Thus, all the embroidered pieces, that have specific places and purposes in the village house, is seen in that exact context in the museum too. Rather than being mounted on mannequins or framed in glass cabinets, these pieces are put in context, hence adding meaning for that particular embroidered piece.

A typical Indian family.

Another idea was to introduce to the visitors, the life of the village people and artisans, along with just their craft. Since the museum complex also had a guest house and kitchen, I thought of using these spaces too. This idea was on the lines of ‘Museums as a part of the hospitality’ sector.

The kitchen and the brass and copper utensils.

The workshop and embroidery.

Therefore, all the other spaces in the museum complex, would have elements from the museum display. These will be interacted with by the visitors to the museum, during their stay. Hence, there is always something for each family member of the family. Whichever place the visitor decides to spend time in,he or she will encounter elements they already saw in the museum, and eventually, understand them more.

Every member of the family takes away something with them.

When this family is going back home, different members of the family would then have noticed and learned different things in the Museum. There is atleast one thing that the visitor takes away with him/her and through discussions on the ride home, this learning is shared and the experience is wholesome.

Design reponse- in terms of display.

The brief stated that the current display at the Amul museum is obsolete and renovation is needed. Space and display analysis on site was carried on and observations regarding content and nature of display was done in Anand. It was found that the display goes against the natural beauty of the space and hence, I decided to rather use these natural elements like light, for enhancing the display. Transparency was played with.

Amul’s contribution

The new narrative

What the museum lacked was connecting to the visitor, much like what the brand stands for. Hence, the narrative that was designed in a way that the visitor sees for himself how Amul affects the society- at a macro level, to affecting him as a person- at a very micro, personal level. This was done by dividing the space into displays that convey the various levels of Amul’s contribution- and hence, its way of ‘giving back’ to the society, to which it belongs.

The ‘gear’ installation

The visitor is put in context by a mural that shows the map of Gujarat and Amul’s spread over the villages. Next, Amul is introduced as a co-operative rather than a ‘brand’ to give better meaning to the rest of the museum display narrative of ‘giving in back to the society’. And the Gear installation instils the Amul values of participation, unity and impact-through an interactive installation where a visitor starts turning one gear at the bottom, resulting in all the gears coming together one by one and finally setting the largest gear in motion.

The colour scheme.

Since, the abundant natural light was to be used, I decided to use fabric panels hanging from the ceilings, to be viewed against the light, as media. The fabric would have translucency quality and the stories would be appliqued or embroidered on them- corresponding to the timeline - explaining Aul’s contribution at community level.

Using Pepper’s ghost principle to project 2D video on a 3D diorama

Working of the Pepper’s ghost principle.

Using the ‘Pepper’s Ghost’ principle a 2D projection on a 3D diorama can be obtained, without the use of a projector. All you need is a 3D physical diorama setting, an LCD screen and a glass placed at 45 angle between them. The glass reflects the video played on the screen on to the diorama. This section shows Amul work in various villages- tree plantation, building of houses, schools, etc.

Another idea was to have a functional installion, that people can interact with, within the museum. The metaphor of a ‘Well’ or a ‘kuaan’ was used and using simple sensors, lights and textiles, an experiential space was created. As the visitor climbs the staircase, the well ‘fills up’ with light(using sensors), signifying filling of water, and in this case, the agent for prosperity is the visitor himself.

New years installation for NID community` keywords: unconventional new year resolution sharing, anonymous ‘gifts’, the colour of happiness and warmth

reading your ‘gifted’ resolution and giving one back in exchange for someone else

A group of like minded and enthusiastic friends came together to make an installation for the NID community, to welcome the new year with the spirit of sharing and spreading happiness. We made a room full of yellow balloons hanging from the ceiling, with tiny envelopes attached to each. Every envelope had a new year resolution written by an anonymous person. The person visiting was to choose his/her baloon, read the resolution and write one in return, to be read by a third anonymous person, from that envelope.

The basic idea was to make seating and furniture out of day to day materials, inside the kingfisher lounge. The idea was to make people perceive ordinary and otherwise waste objects in a different light. Other materials explored were pvc pipes and glass beer bottles. The collection of raw materials and execution was done in Delhi itself.

The exhibition was about Bhartiya’s vision/plan for a new ‘city’. Hence, the exhibtion was planned simply to have a narrtaive that literally takes the visitor ‘through’ the city, as if taking a stroll around it. Wood and backlit acrylic composite life size panels were to be used with different surface treatmentsas to suti the keywords classy and modernistic.

The key to this visual experience is really the subtle surprise and drama that unfolds as the viewer moves from one viewing point to another. As the viewer traverses across the lobby the visual will be dynamic and a changing. When seen frontal we will see white vertical lines and as the viewing shifts towards the edge of the image, the vertical lines will begin to align itself to emerge as an interesting 3D geometrical pattern. There is an element of play, an element of clever, almost ingenious fun.

To design a set and backdrop for a shoot of a professional HMV music video ‘Rickshaw mein romance’. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k02FQ652S6c Considering the meagre time and budget in hand, the entire set up was mostly done up with lights and other junk material used creatively. The video was shot the next day and is on air on tv and internet now.

To create installations that act as teasers for various plays as a part of the Writer’s bloc theatre festival at Prithvi theatre, Mumbai. After interpreting the play ‘OK tata bye bye’, the main concept of ‘voyeurism’ was explored and an installation was made that was a truck from the exterior, but when peeped inside, had an interior of a prostitute’s room.

Another installation, for the same event was conceptualized based on a play that was a gay couple love story set in Delhi. We actually picked up a setting in the play that repeated itself- the delhi metro, and made it into an installation. The ‘only for men’ advertisement poster inside the ‘metro compartment’, was a hint that the play was about a gay couple.

The first image is a atill from a student french movie. A period film. Shot in black and white, the grey values of colours had to be taken care of. Second, from the set of the film ‘Ati’ that deals with the lives of an obsessed man and his loving girlfriend. The workspace of the guy designed was to have hints about his character and his ideals. The third snapshot is taken from an ad film made by a PG Film and video design student about hearing impairment.
