This is a special issues about pets for pet families worldwide.Stories about animals shelters and losing a pet are shared. Humorous stories like the pet journal add some fun to this special edition.Photography is done in natural light and only on pets. One%of%the%most%quarrelsome%topics%is%of% who%makes%a%better%pet%,%a%cat%or%a%dog. Often%questions%are%raised%by%pet%parents,% “are%u%a%cat%person?%or%“are%you%a%dog% person“?%After%researching%on%this%subject% and%being%a%pet%owner%myself%i%have%valid% arguments%for%both%sides%recognized%in%a% very%scientiPic%manner%and%others%which% take%on%a%much%more%humorous%approach%to% prove%their%point. Cats%and%dogs%are%both%gifted%and% intellectual%animals%that%make%magniPicent% pets%and%hold%a%valuable%place%in%the%hearts% of%their%families.%Both%cats%as%well%as%dogs% have%been%the%most%common%domesticated% and%household%pets;%people%have%been%with% them%all%their%life%and%would%already%know% the%difference%between%the%two.% Dogs%are%known%for%their%amiable% affectionate%and%social%behavior%whereas% 2

cats%remain%aloof%and%are%known%to%be% content%in%themselves.Dog%parents%claim% that%their%pets%need%greater%care%and% attention%in%comparison%to%cats%who%are% noted%for%“%doing%their%own%thing%“,%whereas% dogs%tend%to%“follow%the%crowd”.% On%the%basis%of%training,%Dogs,%on%one%hand%,% have%an%advantage%here%as%they%can%be% trained%with%relative%ease%compared%to%a% cat.They%can%be%trained%to%do%“tricks”%and%to% obey%their%parents%with%a%welcoming% asset.It’s%great%to%have%a%dog%that%greets%you% everyday%and%is%obedient.I%dont%think%this% can%be%considered%as%an%advantage% necessarily%compared%to%cats.Where%a%dog% requires%training%in%order%to%be%a%good%pet% and%can%become%ruined%without%it,a%cat,%on% the%other%hand,%doesn’t%have%the%same% requirements.

Whereas%personalities%are%considered% cats%are%more%like%humans%with%a% wider%range%of%emotions%or%%emotional% intelligence%than%dogs.This%can%be% seen%by%their%various%mood%swings% that%they%show%during%the%whole%day.A% dog’s%mood%and%personality%seems%to% be%more%predictable%as%they%are%either% easygoing%and%relaxed%or%energetic% and%playful%most%of%the%time.They% experience%fear,sadness,boredom%etc.% but%with%less%shades%of%grey%as% compared%to%a%cat.This%vast%emotional% intelligence%gives%cats%an%edge%when%it% comes%to%communication.

Housebreaking%a%dog%can%often%be%a%long%and% messy%process,%where%as%a%cat%will% instinctively%Pind%a%place%to%dig%and% bury%their%refuse.In%general,all% that%is%required%to%do%with%a%cat%is% show%it%the%litter%box%and%the%rest% is%history.Even%after% housebreaking%a%dog,there%maybe% the%occasional%“accident”%which% can%be%quite%annoying,especially% if%it%becomes%more%than% occasional.The%other%side%to%this% that%dogs%can%be%trained%far%more% easily%than%a%cat,which%can%be% considered%a%sign%of%respect.Cats% do%whatever%it%is%that%they%want% to%do%with%no%regards%to%you%as% they%are%much%more%independent% and%see%you%as%more%of%an%equal% than%a%master.It%it%this% independence%that%can%be% counted%as%an%asset%which%makes% them%low%maintenance%and% desirable.So%the%upper%hand%here% goes%to%cats%for%their%low% maintenance,instinctive%litter%box% behavior,and%for%the%fact%that%they%don’t% require%training.While%you%may%have%to% persuade%your%cat%to%use%the%scratching%post% instead%of%your%couch%,%this%is%a%minor%offset.

One%thing%that%scares%me%about%dogs%is%that% they%have%an%erratic%side%that%comes%out% when%they%feel%threatened,you%just%don’t% know%what%they’ll%do%next.When%you%offer% your%hand%to%a%dog%to%greet%them%so%they%can% get%to%know%your%scent,%are%they%going%to% bite%you%or%offer%you%their%paw%?%This%is%a% threat%that%you%will%likely%never%encounter% with%a%cat%because%when%a%cat%is%scared%or% threatened,they%will%run%away%or%give%a%tellV tale%sign%(%hissing,arched%back%with%raised% hair,etc)%that%they%want%to%be%left%alone.Dogs% being%pack%animals%are%to%communicate%with% other%dogs%and%this%social%behavior%that% makes%them%so%different%from%cats.Dogs%will% shower%you%with%man’s%best%friend.Also,%it%is% much%easier%to%gain%a%dog’s%trust%than%a% cat’s%,%cat’s%are%very%picky%and%spread%their% love%and%affection%carefully%and%evenly.I% think%this%makes%a%cat’s%personality%closer%to% that%of%a%human’s. On%the%subject%of%intelligence%,%Dr.%Maier%,% professor%of%psychology%at%the%University%of% Michigan%and%Dr.Schneirla%claims%which% animal%is%more%intelligent%on%the%basis%of%a% memory%retention%test.Both%species%were% shown%a%number%of%boxes%and%taught%that% food%could%only%be%found%less%than%one%box% with%a%lighted%lamp%on%top.When%the% training%was%completed,researchers% prevented%them%from%going%to%the%box%for%a% period%of%time.Cats%returned%to%the%correct% box%as%much%as%16%hours%later,exhibiting%a% power%of%recall%superior%to%that%of%monkeys% and%orangutans.The%dog’s%recall%lasted%no% more%than%5%minutes.% % Cats%are%better%problem%solvers%with%better% memories%than%dogs.%Dogs%are%better%at% understanding%people%and%their% emotions.Dogs%have%been%with%humans% much%longer%than%cats%and%have%a%better% understanding%of%us%in%general%but%i%don’t% think%cat's%will%change%with%time,%cats%are% cats%and%they%aren't%going%to%change%their% ways%for%us,%we%will%change%for%them%if% anything.%The%advantage%here%goes%to%the% cats%for%showing%their%superior%memory%and% problem%solving%skills.% 4

In%the%area%of%service,%dog’s%undoubtedly% take%the%trophy%home.% Dogs%are%natural%born%protectors,%guards%if% you%will.%Your%dog%will%instinctively%protect% you%and%your%house%'til%the%day%they%die%and% are%happy%to%do%so.%If%you%have%a%dog%in%the% house%you%don’t%a%need%a%security%system.% Dogs%have%been%used%for%generations%to% serve%and%protect%and%have%a%vast%range%of% breedVspeciPic%talents%that%benePit%mankind.% With%dogs,%the%master's%wellbeing%comes% before%their%own,%a%demonstration%of% selPlessness%to%the%extreme.%Cats%are%only% looking%out%for%themselves.% What%dogs%lack%in%grace%and%cleanliness,% they%more%than%make%up%for%in%friendliness% and%dependability.%What%cats%lack%in% playfulness%with%people%and%obedience,%they% make%up%for%in%gentle%affection%and% intelligence.% %The%basis%of%this%argument%is%not%to% determine%which%animal%should%be%preferred% as%a%pet%but%to%strengthen%whichever%side% they%belong%to.%This%is%not%rocket%science%but% just%taking%common%sense%into%account%and% having%an%enjoyable%comparison%between% the%two.%Whichever%pet%you%choose,%be% happy%with%the%choice%you%make%and%give% them%all%the%love%and%attention%they%deserve.% If%you%choose%to%have%both,%do%not%show% favoritism%and%always%remember,%if%you% them%your%heart%they%will%give%you%theirs.%

Pet"Diaries"="A"Day"in"the"lives"of"a"dog"and"a"cat" them.%The% evening%arrives%with%a%bowl%full%of%snacks% and%biscuits.%Now%that%my%stomach%is%full%I% accompany%the%members%of%the%house%in% watching%some%TV.%A%car%ride%at%night% completes%my%day;%the%feeling%of%sticking% your%head%outside%the%window%and%feeling% the%wind%in%your%Ploppy%ears%is% unexplainable.%Sometimes%on%a%good%day%I% get%treated%with%my%favorite%ice%cream.%After% dinner%I%sprawl%on%the%bed%and%get%cozy% under%the%blankets%till%I%am%lulled%to%sleep.%I% wake%up%several%times%at%night%to%bark%at% rival%street%dogs%in%the%neighborhood.%This% routine%follows%mostly%everyday%and%makes% my%life%content%and%exciting.

%A%Day%in%a%dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s%life I%begin%my%day%at%8:am%in%the%morning,%I%go% for%stroll%and%chase%birds,%scaring%them%away% is%the%best%part%of%my%morning.%By%9:am%I%am% served%with%my%favorite%carrot%Plavor%chew% sticks%and%milk,%sometimes%my%mother%gives% me%really%disgusting%dog%supplements,%I% create%drama%and%dodge%them%when%they%try% and%chase%me%with%it.%At%10:am%I%Pind%anyone% who%is%still%sleeping%in%the%house%and%go%and% snuggle%beside%them,%I%am%then%smothered% with%my%daily%dose%of%kisses%and%get%rubbed% in%my%tummy%which%makes%me%drowsy%and% my%eyes%heavy%making%it%hard%for%me%not%to% have%a%quick%nap.%For%lunch%I%am%given% chicken%and%rice%which%I%am%tricked%into% Pinishing%by%the%bones%hidden%inside%the% food%cleverly%Pind%all%the%bones%and%leave%the% food%till%my%parents%decide%to%feed%me.%In%the% evening%I%play%in%the%park%and%bark%at% strangers,%sometimes%staring%into%space%can% also%be%very%exciting.%When%I%am%home%I% welcome%whoever%visits%my%house%and%wag% my%tail%to%show%how%happy%I%am%to%see% 6

I%am%convinced%that%the%other%prisoners%are% not%a%part%of%my%team.%The%dog%receives% special%privileges.%He%is%regularly%released%–% and%seems%to%be%more%than%willing%to%return.% He%is%obviously%retarded.%

A%Day%in%a%cat’s%life% My%master%dines%lavishly%on%fresh%meat% while%I%am%given%cat%food%.%I%eat%it%in%order%to% keep%up%my%strength.%Since%i%am%a%captive%I% always%dream%of%escape.%The%best%way%to% disgust%my%master%is%to%vomit%on%the%carpet.% When%people%visit%my%house%I%give%them% ghastly%stares%and%mew%when%they%try%to%get% any%closer.%To%win%the%hearts%of%humans%I% decapitate%a%mouse%and%drop%its%headless% body%at%their%feet%this%also%demonstrates% what%my%capabilities%are%as%a%cat,%they%only% restrict%themselves%to%condescending% comments%about%my%hunting%skills.% Sometimes%they%place%me%in%solitary% conPinement%and%go%out%for%long%durations%of% time.%I%scratch%doors%to%show%my% disapproval.

I%observe%the%birds%outside,%I%see%them% communicating%with%the%guards%and%I%am% sure%he%spies%on%my%smallest%of%moves.% Revenge%shall%be%plotted%soon.%The%long% tiring%day%ends%with%me%walking%around%my% master’s%bed%when%he’s%fast%sleep%and% Pinding%a%comfortable%and%warm%spot% wherever%possible.%

Today%I%was%almost%successful%in%an%attempt% to%assassinate%one%of%my%tormentors%by% weaving%around%his%feet%as%he%was%walking.%%I% must%try%this%again%tomorrow. 7

Behind the doors

I.A.S Kamna Pandey talks about her experience in a local animal shelter run by her and what goes on behind the doors Animal%Ashram%is%a%local%NGO%that%rescues% animals%and%takes%care%of%all%their%needs.% Headed%by%Mrs.%Kamna%Pandey%this%shelter% is%located%in%the%heart%of%the%city%Lucknow.% Mrs.Verma%is%an%I.A.S%ofPicer%who%shifted%to% Lucknow%post%marriage.%She%gives%an%insight% on%animal%atrocities%in%the%town. A%pair%of%mournful%eyes%peeks%out%from% between%metal%bars.%Whiskers%twitch%in% anticipation,%ears%cock,%and%a%little%head%tilts% as%a%child%and%his%parent’s%walk%by.%Animals% that%are%either%lost%or%no%longer%wanted%by% their%owners%are%dropped%off%at%animal% shelters,%where%they%are%housed%and%cared% for—%but%often%only%temporarily.%Sadly,% shelters%are%the%last%stop%for%more%than%half% of%the%animals%that%end%up%there.%Only%about% half%of%the%animals%that%enter%a%shelter%will% ever%return%to%their%original%owner%or%Pind%a% new%home.%

Kamna%goes%to%tell%us%of%cases%where%pure% bred%beagles,%saint%Bernard’s,%Labradors%etc% are%abandoned%overnight%by%people%no% longer%want%them.%This%cruel%behavior%of%the% society%is%disheartening%and%animal%lover% Mrs.%pandey%is%left%infuriated%on%the%of%how% animals%are%illVtreated.%She%goes%on%to%tell%us% an%incident%where%acid%was%thrown%on%a% street%dog.%The%inVhouse%doctors%at%the% animal%ashram%did%all%they%could%do%to% reconstruct%his%burnt%and%exposed%face%and% body%and%faced%numerous%surgeries.

your%owners%left%you%alone%to%die% by%yourself%but%you%did%not%die% alone%and%you%did%not%die%in% vain,%you%will%not%be%forgotten% and%now%you%are%able%to%run% free”.% Mrs.Pandey%dictated%many%such% heart%wrenching%stories.%But%she% tells%us%that%there%many%kind% hearted%families%who%adopt% these%abandoned%pets%as%well.%

Kamna%shared%a%very%touching% experience%of%her%own%where%the% Animal%ashram%got%a%call%about%a% dog%one%day%chained%up%in%a% backyard,%lying%in%the%dirt,%unable%to% move%and%crying%out%in%pain.%When% they%arrived%they%found%a%“newly”% abandoned%house%and%a%Pilthy% backyard%and%this%poor%old%boy.% They%found%out%from%neighbors%that% the%family%had%left%many%weeks%ago%and%left% him.%He%had%no%food%or%water%anywhere%and% no%shelter,%no%blankets%just%chained%to%a%pole.% He%could%not%walk%and%was%very%lethargic% and%crying.%He%was%immediately%brought%to% the%shelter%hospital.% The%abandoned%dog%about%14%years%old%and% covered%in%tumors%could%not%stand%or%walk% and%one%of%his%ears%was%missing.%He%had% scars%and%cuts%all%over%his%body%and%was% covered%in%Pleas%and%maggots.% He%was%suffering%beyond%words.He%was% named%Harvey%and%Kamna%stood%by%his%side% while%he%took%his%last%breath%and%petted%him% and%told%him%what%a%good%boy%he%was%and% that%he%would%no%longer%be%neglected%or% would%not%face%any%more%suffering.%She% claims%that%He%looked%at%her%with%pretty% brown%eyes%so%as%to%say%“thank%you”%and% then%he%was%gone.% I%quote%her%to%say%“I’m%sorry%Harvey%that% 10

Liza,%a%beautiful%dog%who%lost%her%paw%in%a% horrifying%accident%was%adopted%by%a%loving% family%and%a%member%of%the%ashram%itself.% She%is%now%hail%and%hearty%and%living%life%to% its%fullest%with%her%owners.% Animals%at%the%shelter%have%doctors%24/7%at% their%beck%and%call%taking%care%of%their% health.%People%volunteer%to%help%out%and% offer%their%services.%Some%people%donate% blankets,%food%etc%for%all%the%animals%in%the% shelter.%With%more%of%such%support%the% shelter%can%help%as%many%animals%as% possible.%

In"the"loving"memory"

Loosing%your%pet%can%be%very%shattering% and%pet%families%can%only%understand%the% grief.%Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s%the%void%that%cannot%be%fulPilled.% Emotions%become%overwhelming%when% you%lose%your%special%canine%suddenly% and%u%see%urself%coping%with%it%since%he% was%a%part%of%your%daily%routine.% Everyday%tasks%can%be%heartbreaking%like% catching%yourself%ready%to%feed%and%take% him%out%for%his%daily%walks.% For%me%it%was%Coming%home%to%no%one% greeting%you,%since%there%was%not%one%day% that%my%dog%did%not%come%to%the%door%to% welcome%me%wagging%his%tail%happily%and% cheering%me%up%after%all%the%obstacles% that%came%my%way%during%the%day.% The%love%we%share%with%our%dogs%is%the% purest%form%of%love%we%as%human%can% experience.%Our%dogs%accept%us.%It%is%as% simple%as%that.%Dogs%donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t%care%what%we% look%like,%if%we%are%rich%or%poor,%if%we% have%a%big%house%,%small%house%or%no% house%at%all.%They%respond%to%us%the%same% way%on%our%angry%days,%quiet%days,%busy% 12
