Exhibition Catalogue 2017
Welcome Clay: A Festival of Ceramics is brought to you by Devon Pop Ups. We are celebrating the rich heritage of North Devon with up to 40 of the best potters in the South West showcasing their work at the historic Pannier Market in Bideford. You'll find details of our awesome exhibitors in this catalogue. On the day we have workshops with Gwen Vaughan and Mitch Pilkington (these need to be booked in advance). You will have the chance to make a clay bird or a porcelain wall vase. Images of the workshop projects are overleaf.
Watched the pottery throw down and fancy a crack at throwing yourself? We have a potter's wheel experience from Tarka Pottery. You can book in advance or drop in on the day. But spaces are limited so don't leave it 'til the last minute.

A Brief History The ceramics industry has been an important part of Bideford's history and, at one time, there were up to 40 kilns producing thousands of practical, simple, earthenware pots for cooking and storage. The boom time for the ceramics industry was the 17th Century when they were exported to parts of England and South Wales. Thousands also sailed from Bideford Quay across to American Colonies. The area is best known for it's highly decorative harvest jugs using a scraffito technique where a design is scratched into the surface of a vessel. Local potter Harry Juniper continues the tradition of commemorative harvest jugs from his studio on Butcher's Row at the Pannier Market.
