The Devon Air Ambulance Trust Devon Air Ambulance Trust is the charity which raises the funds to keep 2 Air Ambulances flying in Devon. The first Devon Air Ambulance mission was flown on 27th August 1992, since then over 15,900 have been flown. It costs approximately £4 million each year to keep both helicopters flying. With 2 Air Ambulances 50% of Devon can be reached by Air Ambulance within 5 minutes, with the remainder within 20 minutes. The charity receives no funding from central or local Government, nor the National Lottery Devon has 2 Air Ambulances – one based in Exeter, the other in North Devon. The HEMS desk (helicopter emergency medical services) at the 999 Ambulance control room is funded by the 3 charities in the South West being Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Trust. It went live full time on 22 nd June 2008. The controller at this desk has the sole responsibility of deploying the helicopter. Runs its own in house lottery with 18,000+ playing members. Entry is £1 per week of which 70p goes directly to running the helicopters. The helicopters undertake lifesaving missions such as road traffic collisions and equestrian incidents, as well as medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests. It reduces patient deterioration ie spinal and head injuries and burns, as it is able to take a patient to a specialist unit/hospital, which may not be the closest to the incident.
