bisoN HEAD COACH
GARY hARRELL
ary “Flea” Harrell enters his fourth season as head football coach at Howard University and is committed to building the Bison program into a contender.
G
It did not take Harrell long to put his stamp on the Howard University football program. Using the slogan, “The Road to Redemption” in his first season in 2011, Harrell was able to turn the Bison’s fortunes around by leading them to a 5-6 mark. It was significant because the win total exceeded the total number of victories the three previous season combined.
He is the all-time leading receiver in school history and ranks among the tops in MEAC history. He also holds the season record for punt returns (29) and return yards in a season (417). Harrell was a four-year letter winner at Howard University.
“Howard has a strong legacy of achievement,” Harrell said. “Every member of Howard University football accepts the responsibility of representing the program with dignity and pride on and off the field. We started out as the Road To Redemption in an attempt to Harrell was among the finalists for the Eddie bring the program back to respectability. We are now Robinson Award, presented to the top coach entering the next phase,‘The Road to Glory.’It is our goal in FCS and the MEAC Coach of the Year. to have a program that is competitive year in and year out.” With his philosophy in place, Harrell would lead As a starter for Howard’s undefeated 1993 team, Harrell Howard to a 7-4 record and a 6-2 mark in the and his teammates won the Mid-Eastern Athletic MEAC. It was the first winning season for the Conference championship and were crowned the Black Bison in a decade and the second place finish in National College champions.
