Devonport ... Back to School!

Devonport City News February 2012

With students already back to school it must mean we are well into February already and it is all systems go with planning for the month long Devonport Food and Wine Festival. Grab the Advocate on 24 Febraury for the 2012 Festival Guide, full of everything you need to know about this fantastic event. Check out page 2 for a sneak peek of the Festival Calendar. Here at the Devonport City Council we want to know how YOU think we're performing! The Customer Satisfaction Survey allows you to rate Council services and facilities, to tell us how you feel about your community, have your say about future planning for our City, and seeks to find out how and where you source information from Council. To finish it all off, we ask a little bit about you. The survey will help us to determine which areas we need to improve in, and will also give us an idea of how Devonport residents feel about their City and their Council. The survey is strictly confidential, and results will only be used in determining our future objectives and direction.

Australia Day Fiesta The 2012 Australia Day Fiesta appeared for the first time at the newly developed Bluff Precinct, conducted between 4pm and 8pm on 26 of January. The event combines the official Australia Day Ceremony – which includes the Citizenship Ceremony and the Australia Day Awards – with live music, dancing and specific children’s entertainment and activities. During the Citizenship Ceremony, the Mayor of Devonport, Steve Martin, welcomed seven new citizens. Australia Day awards were handed out in three categories; Community Event of the Year, awarded to the Lions Club of City of Devonport for Taste the Harvest, Young Citizen of the Year, awarded to Macey Stewart and the Citizen of the Year was awarded to Bob Vellacott, who was acknowledged for his long volunteer service to multiple organisations. Music was provided by solo artist Daniel Lebkowski and The Marvans, a three-piece rock band who performed well known Australian covers. The event also included the second round of the Ghost Rock Talent Quest, an opportunity for young performers to sing at the Concert in the Vineyard, on the 3rd March. Belly dancing, break dancing, contemporary dance and ballet demonstrations all featured at this year’s event. Children’s entertainment included a free jumping castle, free face painting and a range of free activities conducted by Pandemonium.
