Welcome to Devonport Jazz 2016
“Jazz speaks for life. The blues tell the story of life’s difficulties, and if you think for a moment, you will realize that they take the hardest realities of life and put them into music, only to come out with some new hope or sense of triumph. This is triumphant music.” (Dr Martin Luther King ‘On the Importance of Jazz’, Opening Address of the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival.) Duke Ellington’s birthday, 30 April, was chosen in 2011 by UNESCO as the day for the annual International Jazz Day celebration. This year it was celebrated in 190 countries on six continents. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the IJD 2016 All-Star Global Concert from the White House. In his beautiful, heartfelt and very convincing opening speech, Obama described jazz as being “America’s most significant artistic contribution to the world”. He was explaining how jazz took shape more than 100 years ago in New Orleans. “By the early 20th century you could walk down the street of the infamous Storyville District and maybe, as you tried to stay out of trouble, hear the likes of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and, of course, Louis Armstrong”. He thus gently hinted at some nefarious aspects of that melting pot of cultures and people. Here in Tasmania some “concerns for the morals emerged in Ulverstone. There the local council, after forbidding the dancing of the Charleston in the municipality, was asked in 1926 by ministers of religion to close down an open palais de dance in the interest of decency”. (Lloyd Robson: A History of Tasmania, 1991) By the beginning of 21st century, jazz reached a level of respectability similar to that of classical music. It’s often being performed at the White House (Barack Obama re-named it a “Blues House” for the IJD concert). Former Czech President Vaclav Klaus presented 90 concerts in his series ‘Jazz at the Castle’ between 2004 and 2013. Even here in Tasmania our Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Kate Warner, opened Government House this year for three outstanding jazz musicians/composers to perform “God Save The Queen: Themes and Variations” to “explore the anthem through varying arrangements, re-composition and improvisation with pianos and guitar, plus string and brass quartets”. Many great jazz musicians and promoters contributed to bringing jazz to the level of concert music, a situation unimaginable 100 years ago when jazz was being born. We, at Devonport Jazz, have tried, for the last fifteen years, to present jazz both as a “high-brow” art form, while also trying to re-connect it to the simple, nonnefarious joys linked with the origins of jazz in New Orleans: dancing, dining and wining. ARTISTS EMMA PASK (NSW) Award winning vocalist Emma Pask has firmly established herself as one of this country’s favourite voices in jazz. She has been charming audiences nationally and internationally with her sensational sound. It comes as no surprise that James Morrison, Australia’s most awarded jazzman, describes Emma as “The greatest gift to Australian jazz vocals”. Morrison spotted her talent during one of his regular visits to high schools when she was just 16. She first sang with his band that night and has been touring with Morrison around Australia and overseas, ever since. Despite her achievements and the international recognition of her talent, Emma retains her natural, refreshing and unpretentious, positive approach to life. Returning to the Devonport Jazz Festival in 2016 Emma brings her sensational swinging trio with her. You won’t want to miss these very special evenings of swinging jazz performed by a collection of Australia’s finest jazz musicians including Phillip Stack (double bass), Matthew McMahon (piano) and Gordon Rytmeister (drums).

ARTISTS EMU JELLY JAZZ BAND (Nth Tas)
FINN SECCOMBE TRIO (Sth Tas)
Emu Jelly are into early jazz styles from a smattering of ragtime through New Orleans Dixie/trad, toe-tapping, extrovert music where even the blues sounds happy! They love the old marching band tunes like “Bill Bailey” and “Tiger Rag”. This feel-good band features Kevin Lucadou-Wells (trumpet), Andrea Van Lit (clarinet), Jacob Boote (guitar), Andy Farrell (saxophone, vocals), Bill Wright (banjo), Lydia Long (bass) and David Young (drums)
An all Tasmanian ensemble, the Finn Seccombe Trio features the voice of Finn Seccombe and the masterful piano of Kelly Ottaway. They are accompanied by emerging talent Lewis Elliott on drums. Their repertoire consists of mostly songbook standards punctuated with more complex/ contemporary vocalised pieces. The band moves between solid swing and ballad feels to more dangerous rhythmic and harmonic territory, all the time paying deep respect to the song and its ever evolving context.

ARTISTS FIONA BOYES (VIC) Australian blues guitarist and singer, Fiona Boyes, has been described by reviewers as a ‘musical anomaly’ and ‘Bonnie Raitt’s evil twin’. She is an internationally recognised and awarded recording and touring artist, and the first woman and non-American to win the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Fiona has been recording and performing internationally for more than 25 years, building a career that has taken her to major festivals and stages in Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe. Fiona has carved out a well-deserved reputation as a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and band leader. Equally at home on acoustic or electric guitars, her repertoire is like a blues travelogue. Listen to her play and you’ll hear pre-war Delta slide, wailing laments, single chord Mississippi Hills grooves, intricate and beautiful Piedmont finger picking, rollicking New Orleans barrelhouse, greasy Memphis soul, driving classic Chicago sounds, the country stylings of Texas swing, and the uptown sounds of the West Coast. Fresh from a tour of the USA, Fiona was a finalist for the Best Traditional Female Blues Artist at the US Blues Music Awards 2016.

ARTISTS FRANCES MADDEN (NSW) Described by ABC Jazz’s Mal Stanley as a talented young vocalist/pianist and ‘one to watch’, Frances is one of the classiest young entertainers Australia has produced in recent times. Her sophisticated mix of vocal jazz, blues and classics has been selling out the best jazz venues, night clubs and festivals around the country and she has also established herself as a contemporary songwriter of note. While she’s been compared to a young Diana Krall and Norah Jones, Frances captivates her audiences with a combination of her genuinely warm stage presence together with a voice and style that is uniquely her own. She is also a talented and engaging original composer so when she performs her own swinging tunes, beautiful ballads or smokey blues, they merge seamlessly with the timeless classics she re-interprets. While at Devonport Jazz, Frances’ concerts will include a mix of swing, ballads and blues, both originals and mainstream classics. Her seven-piece band will feature leading local jazz musicians (Al Dobson, Nick Parish, Hamish Houston, Matthew Ives) and backing vocals (Audrey Lonergan, Rosalia Lonergan).

ARTISTS JAMES WHELLER HAMMOND TRIO (Sth Tas)
JIMMY REECE and THE CRAZY MAC (Sth Tas)
If you love the B3 Hammond and soulful jazz vocals then you’re going to love this unique trio. James Wheller has the ability to back Finn Seccombe’s dark chocolate vocal tones with a sound resembling a gospel backing choir. That is the inimitable B3 Hammond whirring through glowing steam punk valves and spinning Leslie speakers. Add in the hard swinging grooves of Lewis Elliott on drums and you have a truly dynamic jazz trio that will get your feet tapping and hips swaying.
Guitarist Jimmy Reece showcases his latest work with his band The Crazy Mac. Born in Tasmania, Jimmy has performed across Australia and overseas in various bands and his compositions have achieved chart success both at home and internationally. His songs have been included on international film soundtracks and used in documentaries for both cinema and television. His latest album, The Crazy Mac, combines a variety of flavours from 1940s Paris jazz, classic blues elements, right through to acid jazz - all highlighted by his wild guitar playing.

ARTISTS Peter Locke Trio (NSW) Peter Locke formed the Peter Locke Trio with the sound of Nat King Cole’s trio in mind. “We don’t want to necessarily ‘copy’ Nat Cole as such, it’s more about creating that ambiance in the sound of a tight, swinging trio. Everyone wanted that sound. Even Ray Charles, early on, was singing and playing like Nat Cole.” The Trio does a few Cole arrangements but mainly they want to carry this trio forward with that ‘sound’ and just play hot swing. The Peter Locke Trio features John Blenkhorn’s smooth singing style which suits the group perfectly, along with his excellent guitar work. Mervyn Sequiera is the ‘engine room’, providing the swinging pulse required when there are no drums, and throughout, Peter Locke’s deft, swinging touch on the piano, completes the sound. This tight, swinging trio tips their hat to the style of the Nat ‘King’ Cole Trio and the wider genre of the Great American Songbook.

ARTISTS SEDRERGREEN and ALLAN (VIC) A new jazz duo has evolved from the galaxy of Australian musical stars. Pianist and composer, Bob Sedergreen and singer-songwriter Geoff Allan are doing something new. Blending the risk and response of jazz, Sedergreen’s sensibility for groove and fun, and Allan’s funk and rhythm, they explore their partnership and different musical beginnings. Their on-stage chemistry is intense. Together they shape, layer and build performances full of tension, challenge and risk. The charm of their personal rapport pulls audiences into the performance, a thoroughly engaging and moving experience of rhythm and groove. This musical adventure is mostly unchartered, improvisation and originality laced with challenge and humour, though 100 years of musical experience offers recognisable landmarks as Sedergreen and Allan share beautifully lyrical stories and original songs. Sedergreen and Allan are preparing to cut a classic vinyl record at Gearbox Records, part of the legendary Tileyard Studio complex in London, in early 2017.
