Spring 2016 Set your sights on Devonport this Spring
1
Mayor’s Message Council is pleased to once again present our seasonal community events and activity guide for Spring. The focus of this Spring Guide is about learning new skills and getting out and about, following the cooler winter months. Spring represents the blossoming of flowers, longer and warmer days and a time of transition, a wonderful time to increase our activity levels and recommit to our fitness and learn something new. We are truly blessed to live in a City bounded by the river and sea, with so many parks and outdoor reserves to explore. This September we’ll be hosting our first ‘Festival of Learning’. The aim is to celebrate lifelong learning and engage with everyone about the learning opportunities available here in Devonport. Learning can happen anywhere, anytime - and as a community we believe that it is the key to unlocking our future opportunities. Whether it be picking up a fishing rod for the first time, reading a new book, trying a new handicraft or attending a maritime talk at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre – these are all valuable learning opportunities to be embraced and celebrated. Once again, we have a great school holiday program to keep the kids occupied and this time we also celebrate Seniors Week and a range of events aimed at highlighting and recognising the contributions made by seniors in our community. We’d love to receive your feedback on the program - to help us make our Summer Guide even bigger and better, so feel free to drop in to Councils’ offices or send us an email at council@devonport.tas.gov.au. Alderman Steve Martin, Mayor of Devonport

The great 1000 book challenge! “Three cheers a thousand times for the 1000 book challenge. It will surely be the greatest fun and should change children’s lives forever. It’s well-known that if children have had 1,000 books read to them before they start school they have a massive head-start and fall headlong into reading, happily and easily. Go the challenge!”
1000 Book Challenge The Great 1000 Book Challenge is a literacy based program that encourages all of the families and caregivers of Devonport to read 1000 books with their young children. Reading to your child provides a secure, cozy and fun opportunity to bond with your child. It is a time to nurture your child, and a home life that includes positive experiences with reading and literacy ensures positive attitudes towards reading once in school. You can participate in the Great 1000 Book Challenge on your own or as part of a team, such as the Devonport LINC or the East Devonport Child and Family Centre. The Devonport LINC and East Devonport Child & Family Centre have wall trackers to keep you up to date on the progress. There will be fun incentives along the way and forums to share ideas and great stories of what is happening in your community with the challenge.
