Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre & Rock Carving Walk – Established to protect the aboriginal carvings which can be found on the Bluff headland and to keep alive the culture of the Tasmanian Aborigines through public education. Mersey Bluff Lighthouse – Construction of the lighthouse in 1889 allowed for increased trading in the port as well as increased safety. The following year work began on dredging away the troublesome sandbar across the mouth. In the past, traders were forced to lower a boat with a light, to guide them through the dangerous rocky entrance and shallow sand bar. Pioneer Cemetery – Hidden behind what is now the Mersey Bluff Caravan Park are the remnant headstones of some of Devonport’s pioneer citizens.

Don River Railway – Owned and operated by volunteers, this unique Railway Museum has Tasmania’s largest collection of steam locomotives dating from 1879 to 1951 and passenger carriages dating from 1869 to 1964. Extensive restoration works are carried out within the complex, and vintage trains run daily along the Don River. The Don Reserve - The Don Reserve borders the Don River and contains 32 hectares of Black Gum forest, 7 hectares of Swamp paperbark and 16 hectares of Coastal Black Peppermint. These species are poorly preserved in other parts of the state so their importance here is not to be underestimated. A great place to see birds, with over 70 species recorded, 20 more than for most similar reserves in Tasmania, including the rare Swift Parrot. This has come about by habitat improvements, loss of habitat elsewhere and the geographic location of the Reserve being the eastern most extent of some species and the western most extent of others. Bird lists are available at The Devonport Visitor Centre. The estuary is always a good place to visit, with tides that vary over 3 metres, it is an ever changing place. Sawdust Bridge – Believed to be the first primitive crossing over any river on the North-West Coast, the Sawdust Bridge (named not because it was constructed of Sawdust as some believe, but because it was adjacent to vast deposits of sawdust which were flumed along the riverbank from the sawmill) was originally constructed of sapling spars and was capable of taking foot and single horse traffic. Over the years the bridge fell into disrepair numerous times until it was bought back to life in 1988 as a Bicentennial project. Julie Burgess – The Julie Burgess is the last of the beautiful Burgess Family fishing ketches that plied the waters of Bass Strait and its islands. Volunteers have lovingly restored the ketch, so that you can relive the classic days of sailing in Bass Strait. Two-hour sailings are scheduled for Wednesdays and Sundays subject to weather conditions. Please note minimum numbers apply and passengers should contact the Bass Strait Maritime Centre for bookings and departure times. Beach Cricket
Why Haiku
Gather your friends and family for a fun afternoon of beach cricket, hosted by Cricket North West. All equipment supplied. Suitable for all ages.
Haiku poetry asks us to comment on the natural world and our place in it. Relying on revered principles of economy and simplicity, a good Haiku is deceptive: an observation made within it often masks a deep and compelling truth. This workshop with Cameron Hindrum provides one possible framework for the conception and crafting of Haiku. Participants will explore a variety of starting points, develop and share their own work, and then explore further using the principles of Haiku in other poetic or fiction writing. Suitable for teens and above. Bookings essential.
