Turning up the heat in Devonport this Winter
WELCOME We hope you will enjoy this third seasonal guide to community events and activities happening in Devonport. Once again, there’s something for everyone, no matter your age, interest or fitness level - from photography workshops, to jazz in the mall, learning more about our City’s maritime history, creative arts or joining in an open jam session. The school holiday program has also been expanded, so there’s plenty to keep the kids occupied during the school holidays – from sports to science, reptiles to pizza making and cupcake decorating – our aim is to ensure you have access to free or low cost learning activities for your kids these holidays. Welcome to the Devonport Winter Guide 2016.
Alderman Steve Martin Mayor of Devonport
FRONT COVER The Front Cover for the Winter Edition has been kindly supplied by self-taught photographer and Devonport local Jo Johnson, who is a proud wife and mother of two beautiful children. “I feel very privileged to live in such a beautiful area, a photographers paradise, to be given this opportunity to share some of its wonders as I see them through my camera is a great honour for me,” said Jo.

FAMILY THEATRE Egg Presented by Terrapin Puppet Theatre & Melbourne Theatre Company. Mashing puckish pranking and wide-eyed wonder, Tasmania’s own Terrapin Puppet Theatre combines with Melbourne Theatre Company for this quirky little fable for ages eight to ancient. Across a dry and dusty desert two tinkers, Clyde and Horse, drag an enormous egg. They can’t remember how long they’ve been dragging it, or why they’ve been dragging it, or where they are dragging it to. All they know is that it’s really important. Life on their big bald egg of a planet depends upon it. So there’s nothing to be done but to go on! Let’s tug this great big googy into the future. And who knows? Maybe something wonderful will hatch! A tale of two forgetful fellows yoked to a yoke. Silly and funny and a little bit cracked, Egg is filled with clowning, puppetry, hope and the promise of renewal. School performance Tuesday 26 July at 11am (contact box office for school group pricing). When: Tuesday 26 July, 6:30pm Where: Devonport Entertainment & Convention Centre 145-151 Rooke St, Devonport Cost: $24 Adult, $75 Family (2 + 2), DECC subscriber $20 Phone: 6420 2900 web: www.decc.net.au
The Peasant Prince Li Cunxin’s iconic autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer was first published as a children’s picture book, The Peasant Prince. Monkey Baa is honoured to be adapting this story onto the stage. Li, a 10-year old peasant boy, is plucked from his village in rural China and sent to a ballet academy in the big city. He leaves everything and everyone he knows, including his beloved parents. Over years of gruelling training and determination, this boy transforms from an impoverished peasant to a giant of the international dance scene. Li’s courage, resilience and unwavering hope for a better life makes The Peasant Prince a story to ignite our own aspirations to be the best person we can be. Schools performance Tuesday 21 June at 11am (contact box office for school pricing). When: Monday 20 June, 6:30pm Where: Devonport Entertainment & Convention Centre 145-151 Rooke St, Devonport Cost: $24 Adult, $75 Family (2 + 2), DECC subscriber $20 Phone: 6420 2900 web: www.decc.net.au
