Winter

Activities Guide 2019

Mayor’s Message While the weather might be cooling down as we head into winter, there is certainly plenty happening in the city to encourage you to consider heading outdoors. Winter always means jazz – and lots of it – with Devonport Jazz taking centre stage from 2528 July. Great multi-instrumentalist James Morrison is once again the headline act. The Festival is brimming with acts from Tasmania and the mainland, which will please both jazz lovers and the general public. Students from St Brendan Shaw College and Don College will both be showcasing their talent in annual productions with Don tackling Legally Blonde-The Musical and St Brendan Shaw Chicago-The High School Edition. The Devonport Regional Gallery has several new exhibitions over the winter months with workshops also planned while the Bass Strait Maritime Centre will unveil its new exhibition, Torquay Stories, East Devonport. A bullying, resilience and cyber safety forum, supported by the Council, will also be held. And, for the green thumbs, there is a guide to the types of plants that can be planted over winter. So, get out and get busy, for there is much to see and do. Mayor - Councillor Annette Rockliff

28

Winter is the wet season in our region and is the perfect time to plant native plants in your garden.

Here’s a list of Tasmanian native plants that council will be planting around the municipality:

Natives are a better alternative to exotic plants, as they are more adapted to our soils and climate and are less damaging to our environment if their seeds escape our yards.

Acacia melanoxylon Melaleuca ericifolia Eucalyptus obliqua Eucalyptus viminalis Allocasuarina littoralis Pomaderris apetala Atherosperman moschatum Leptospermum scoparium Leptospermum lanigerum Carpobrutus rossii Tetragonia implexicoma Atriplex cinereal Rhagodia candolleana Acacia sophorae

Two artists with a shared childhood growing up in the remote area of Trowutta in the far North West coast of Tasmania in the 1950s and early 1960s have created art works based on their reflections of that time.
