Mayor’s Message From ‘Winter Warmers’ on the Julie Burgess to a weekend of hot jazz at the 2017 Devonport Jazz Festival, we’ve compiled a diverse program to suit all tastes, ages and interests this winter. Our popular school holiday sports program is back, along with Books + Art, new exhibitions and workshops at the Devonport Regional Gallery, historical walks through the CBD, computer courses at the Devonport LINC, comedy and music at the Devonport Entertainment Centre and environmental workshops for the littlies. Art Spark Devonport Regional Gallery’s after-school art program shines a bright light on creativity! Set in the Gallery, Art Spark offers a unique experience for Primary and Secondary students wishing to further their creative thinking, and develop an appreciation of the visual arts. The workshops are presented by a practising artist who is able to bring out each participant’s unique style and interests. No prior skill or knowledge is required, just a healthy sense of curiosity and desire to create. Young Writers’ Workshop The Young Writers’ workshop will help you strengthen your creative writing skills through fun and informal activities and will help you write your personal stories and poems. Every 12 months the Young Writers Workshop group will publish a book containing stories written by the members of the group and illustrated by the Kids Drawn In group who also meet at the Devonport LINC. Exhibition: Tony Ameneiro: Head Over Head Head Over Head is an exhibition based around a research drawing project carried out at the JT Wilson & Shellshear Museums at Sydney University. Both are teaching museums within the Medical Faculty. Donor’s bodies allow a new generation of student physicans the opportunity to learn the skills required to save a new generation of lives. Combined with images from the life drawing studio, exploring issues around mortality and regeneration through drawing and printmaking.

Devonport Regional Gallery contributes to the cultural, social and educational life of the local community, boasting an impressive collection of fine art with a focus on Tasmanian contemporary art, craft and design. In the Main Gallery space, exhibitions from the Gallery’s Permanent Collection, staff-curated exhibitions and touring exhibitions are displayed. The Little Gallery showcases the work of emerging Tasmanian artists with a focus on artists from the North West Region. 7
Exhibition: Ashley Bird: The Nostalgic Toybox Ashley Bird will utilise the dimensions of The Little Gallery to create a ‘toybox of memory’ displaying his experiments in re-framing nostalgic objects of play. The works will be displayed in a series of castings, impression sculptures and vacuum formed plastic shells created from1970s Star Wars Figurines.

Tiagarra Reconciliation Week Devonport City Council in conjunction with Six Rivers Aboriginal Corporation invite you to attend a celebration at Tiagarra - Aboriginal Cultural Centre. During the evening there will be a huge outdoor cinema screening the feature film MABO to celebrate the 25 years of the Mabo decision, as well as documentaries Kanalarjita - An Unbroken String, and Takayna Tarking. Phileas Fogg Trio Jazz a Trois Learn about stories from the Bass Strait and discover our rich maritime history illustrated throughout the exhibition area while enjoying music inspired by the golden era of Jazz. Philéas Fogg Trio, Andreana Micanova (Macedonia) on piano, Dan Seddon (UK) on bass and Philippe Castermane (France) on drums, perform jazz standards from the 50’s, 60’s as well as more recent compositions. Around the World in 80 Days Three actors portray a cast of thousands in this madcap adaptation of Jules Verne’s globetrotting classic, bringing to life sea storms, police chases and elephant rides! The story begins with a bank robbery by a mysterious figure. Then we are introduced to Phileas Fogg, honest-looking, well-turned out and with good teeth who proclaims before his fellow members of a London gentleman’s club that he can circumnavigate the globe in a mere 80 days. He goes forth on his adventure accompanied by his newly-acquired valet, Mr Passepartout. Hot in their pursuit is Detective Fix of Scotland Yard, who thinks that Fogg is the man who robbed the bank. This mad-cap adventure quickly moves along on a succession of locomotives, steamers and hilarity.
