2014 yielded 919 cockles. Survey organisers Charlie Glass and dad Paul (with the help of the Cheltenham Beach Caretakers group) say the higher number of cockles in the main grid may be as a result of the large numbers of juvenile cockles found to the south of this grid in May 2010, and further successful settlements of juvenile cockles since then. “In general the cockles are getting to a bigger size on the beach. “We need to see if this trend in increasing numbers can be maintained on the beach,” they say. Pipi numbers on the beach were also up - 46 were counted in the October survey, up from just five in May 2010. It is uncertain what has led to the large increase in cockles at the beach or if the numbers are sustainable. “Ideally the survey should be repeated in 12 months time to investigate both tuangi numbers and also to see how they’re progressing in terms of size,” say the pair. There was no need to investigate reseeding options at the beach at the moment. The Cheltenham Beach Caretakers group has approached the Ministry for Primary Industries to get new signage erected at Cheltenham Beach, notifying the ban on collecting shellfish and the $10,000 fine.

Shades the new black at Belmont Primary

Staying safe in the sun… Belmont Primary principal Bruce Cunningham sets a good example, alongside his pupils Summer sunglasses are now part of the Belmont Primary School uniform. While optional school Principal Bruce Cunningham hoped there would be a high take-up as he saw the protection of students’ eyes from UV light as an important part of school safety. Less than a month into the programme, 90 of the school’s 420 pupils had bought a pair of the children’s shades, which are on sale for $15. Cunningham says they are ideal for kids. “They are made of rubber and are just about damage-proof. They have grips behind the ears and stay on during sport as well, and they have a space to write your name on, so they won’t get mixed up with someone else’s,” he says. Protecting young eyes is important, says Cunningham. “The main reason is the high UV rays we have in New Zealand. We do a lot of slip, slop, slap with clothes, hats and sun lotion, but we don’t do enough to protect the kids’ eyes,” he says. Cunningham says research indicates that

if eyes get damaged by UV rays at a young age, they are more likely to develop cataracts and blurry vision later in life. “Our new message at school is to slip, slop, slap and wrap your sunglasses around

your eyes,” he says. “I figure if it’s good enough for our parents and our athletes to wear sunglasses while they are outside in the sun, then it’s good enough for our kids,” he says.

Rocking the boat at Devonstock Devonstock continues to be a launch pad for local talent – with Lorde’s younger sister India and band TUGGS on the bill in 2014. Lorde played at Devonstock in 2010 with Louis McDonald. India Yelich-O’Connor will be joined by Livy Wicks, billed as Indy and Livy, while TUGGS have only recently formed. TUGGS is named after a tugboat passing by a Devonport ferry. Guitar player Gavin Woodward says the band formed only days before competing in this year’s Smokefree Rockquest. “As a full band, we have only had about ten practices so far. After two of them we had written one song and got into the regional finals with it. Then we had to write two more songs for the finals,” he says. During their busy exam weeks, the band has written songs collaboratively and mostly online. “James and I sometimes start out with a guitar line and some chords and then give it to Elijah to put the drums to it. Then we do a demo recording for Brooke and she writes the lyrics,” says Gavin. “Today, Brooke is putting lyrics to music for our next practice,” he says. TUGG’s repertoire of originals and covers is growing by the day. Their first performance went well at Gavin’s 18th birthday party and a second one is planned for a fundraiser in Kumeu. The day after Devonstock, TUGGS will be in the studio to record a first EP , with local sound engineer Morgan Allen. Devonstock is scheduled for Sunday 14 December from 3 - 7 pm at Windsor Reserve. Other Auckland artists at Devonstock are Jesse Sheehan, Thin White Lines, all-girl band Vivid and Delic Exodus from Takapuna. Devonstock is organised annually by the Devonport Youth Forum and Devonport Community Coordinator, with the help of Depot Sound.

Looking After Your Exterior Paintwork

Award-Winning Decorators Your Local Resene Eco-Decorator

Cleaning your house on a regular basis will help maintain the paint in a good condition. In an area like the North Shore, it is very important to wash your house on an annual basis. Coastal areas such as the North Shore leave houses susceptible to salt deposits, which along with other airborne contaminants can settle on your paintwork and the result can be a premature breaking down of the applied coatings. Inhibiting the presence of lichen, moss and mould on your house is another reason to regularly wash your house. The problem with lichen, moss and mould is that they can damage the integrity of the paint surface and therefore reduce the life of the applied coatings. This leads to a premature deterioration of the painted surfaces, meaning your house will require repainting sooner than expected. You could regularly wash your house down yourself using a broom, hose and one of the various house-wash products available. The other alternative is to have a ‘Professional House Wash’ from a reputable company such as John Bisset Ltd.

Along with painting services, John Bisset Ltd (JBL) provides a House-Wash Service. JBL also provides a fence-washing service. Often fences look ‘green’ with mould and ‘dull’ from road dirt etc. A good clean will have the fence looking fresh in appearance again, and may mean it does not have to be repainted till a later stage. When you do clean your house, it may become apparent that one or more sides needs repainting, and other sides do not. You can get your house painted on a side-by-side basis as required. It is not necessary to have to paint the entire house at one time. It could be that only the windows have deteriorated, but the weather boards, soffits and fascia have not. JBL can provide a quotation to paint the windows only, and provide a quotation on a ‘side-by-side’ basis, so the painting can be done on a stage-by-stage basis as required. Feel free to contact us for a quotation, or visit our website for further details. www.bissetltd.co.nz

Board sceptical over wharves expansion proposal wharves extended by more than 25%, with Queens Wharf the primary home for cruise ships and Princes Wharf used for large cruise ships. In this scenario, ferry terminals would be located between Princes and Queens wharves, not unlike where they are now. Option two proposes an extension of Bledisloe Wharf so two large cruise ships could berth on its city side. Bledisloe Wharf would be the primary cruise ship facility. Ferry terminals would be again roughly where they are now. Option three sees Captain Cook Wharf nearly doubled in length and used as the primary cruise ship facility. Bledisloe Wharf could also be extended, due to the loss of port activity on its Captain Cook Wharf. Ferry terminals would remain in the same location they are at now. Option four sees all of Captain Cook

Wharf dedicated to ferries. Again, Bledisloe Wharf would be extended due to the loss of port space on Captain Cook Wharf. Cruise ships would berth on Princes and Queens wharves. The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board responded with scepticism to the information presented to them by two members of council’s City Centre Integration (CCI) team at the board’s November 25 workshop. Board chair Mike Cohen said that there was “high sensitivity around reclamation” in the community and questioned why his board was briefed about the plans two months after they had been completed. Cohen also raised the lack of late-night ferries between Devonport and the CBD. Members of the CCIT said that the plans were only “initial ideas” at “exploration stage” and that input from the board was welcome. • A proposed Ports of Auckland extension of the Bledsloe Wharf reclamation in late 2011 met with strong community opposition. Bus shelter proposal slammed Almost 75 % of submitters opposed the idea of a 50-metre bus shelter on Devonport’s waterfront. In an email to those who expressed their views on four proposed design changes for the redevelopment of Marine Square, Auckland Transport (AT) released a summary of the feedback received five months ago.

To our booklovers

We are open until 7.00pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays from December 10 for your relaxed Christmas shopping.

Shop 2, 1 Milford Road, Milford Phone 09 489 8836 www.thebooklover.co.nz

The controversial bus shelter was one of four “proposed improvements.” The feedback shows that 73% of the submitters opposed the bus shelter, saying the shelter was “unnecessary,” would “spoil the sea views” and “ruin the waterfront,” the summary says. “Some said a smaller version could be acceptable, and the proposed design was too long, too large and unattractive,” it says. Two proposed changes received support from the submitters. More than 60% thought a new canopy on the western side of the wharf building would offer protection from rain and looked good, while 67% were positive about the extension of the roof at the front of the wharf building. On the final proposal, 53% opposed the redirection of the pedestrian pathway from inside to outside the wharf, saying it would expose commuters unnecessarily to the weather only to contribute to an overabundance of retail. Whether and when any of the projects will go ahead won’t be decided until March 2015. AT spokesperson Mathew Stewart says: “Due to changes in funding availability all four projects have been delayed.” Until then, AT will work with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board on “final decisions” by next March.

Chemical-free spraying petition still live are trying to standardise chemical spraying of Roundup Auckland-wide. Our local board do not support the introduction of agri-chemicals as the basis of controlling weeds and pests in Devonport. Yet, chemical spraying for our roadside and parks, it seems is outside Auckland Council 2013 Weed Control Policy, local board jurisdiction and community feedback! Will our local board ask Auckland Council and AT why is it that contractors are continuing to spray our parks and roadsides with chemicals, as evidenced by members of the community, and why are they not using the hot-water treatment method, as it has not been seen in Devonport for weed control for months? But it gets worse. Auckland Council is now proposing to include in its long term plan for 2015-2025 a return to chemical spraying. If as a community we don’t get behind our local board on this issue, we face a future of living with Roundup and Metsulfuron (a residual herbicide) being sprayed not only on our parks

On the 14th November, in a Flagstaff article “Community action halts chemical spraying” on Vauxhall Reserve”, local council listened to community concern, holding our environment and health paramount. The council decided to choose hot-water treatment over Roundup to manage the resurfacing of Vauxhall’s sport turfs. As a result of this, I received several e-mails from people in our community applauding Evan Hicks (turf manager) and the decision. Our petition is continuing to collect names to support the campaign that was fought long and hard for six years, over twenty years ago. The local authority then decided to make Devonport “chemical-free, and using alternatives for weed control of our roadsides, parks”. This petition is now asking the council to include our “sports fields”. We are proud of our legacy to remain chemical-free in weed control and we intend to keep it that way. Our community needs to be vigilant and stand solidly on this issue. At present Auckland Transport (AT) and Auckland Council

and sports turfs but on our roads as well - as AT will follow council policy. These chemicals will be on our playgrounds or flowing down our drains out to our beaches. We do not want this for our children or our environment! Come on Devonport get behind this petition. They are at Corelli’s Cafe (next to the Vic), Zest Cafe (next to the BNZ), Devonport Community House and the Depot Art Space. Please sign them if you haven’t already. The petition will be presented to the local board on the 6th February. Sharon Byron-McKay

Latest AT idea beggars belief It beggars belief that this council is even considering spending $350,000 on a covered bike shed by the ferry building. One minute it doesn’t have enough money to finish all aspects of the ferry building, the next it’s thinking of throwing it into projects like this! We need somewhere to lock our bikes – full stop. We don’t need them to be sheltered. When we cycle in the rain we get wet, so does our bike; when we transport our bike on the car in the rain it gets wet. Why on earth is the council considering taking away the meagre amount of parking we have for such a madcap idea? And at such expense. There seems to be a push for a whole raft of bike shelters at ferry terminals, Bayswater being another, and at train stations. A job lot! The only explanation I can think of is that the large number of council employees all need projects and results. There is an easy fix – sack a few, saving money and preventing hare-brained schemes like this one! Trish Jenner, Belmont

Toxic truck? I was wondering if anyone else has observed the Fulton Hogan “eco weed spray” machine coughing and wheezing its way around the streets. It belches out stinking diesel fumes in enormous quantities. I’d like to know what the environmental damage comparison is between this replacement method and the weed killer that was campaigned against. Could be a case of from the frying pan into the fire maybe? Rob Powell

Mt Vic reservoir to be drained as a precaution

Mt Vic reservoir will be drained as a precaution against possible contamination. A manhole cover on the reservoir was recently prised open by vandals. Watercare Networks Operations Manager Anin Nama said test results showed no contamination of either reservoir on Mt Vic. But both would remain isolated from service until they had been drained and thoroughly examined. Watercare would work closely with

technical experts to ensure a thorough evaluation was completed before the reservoirs were returned to service, Nama said. Recent vandalism to an access lid on one of the two Mt Victoria reservoirs is disappointing, and at odds with the sense of ownership communities typically felt towards public assets, he said. Such incidents were rare, but the company took security extremely seriously and appreciated the support it received from the community. Nama said the flurry of interest when Watercare recently refurbished the “mushroom” air vents on Mt Victoria demonstrated the proprietorial attitude many people had. $30,000 for a couple of fences that don’t work

Two safety barriers installed outside Takapuna Grammar School last year – and criticised for not working – cost $30,000. Flagstaff reader Terry Bourke (from Belmont) raised concerns over the barriers’ cost and effectiveness in a Letter to the Editor (October 3) issue and Auckland councillor Chris Darby queried this withAuckland Transport (AT) ten days later. AT Network Operations and Safety Manager Randhir Karma responded last week, saying the total cost of the guard rails had been approximately $30,000. Darby says: “It’s a rich spend in my view, especially when they don’t do the job as intended.” Karma says the rails had been requested by Takapuna Grammar School to prevent students from crossing Lake Road north of the signalised pedestrian crossing “The guard rail is intended to reinforce that the crossing is the safest place to cross the road,” says Karma. Bourke suggested in his letter that instead of a guard rail, the school should have at least one teacher on duty at the gates to make sure the students are crossing Lake Road safely.

Terry Bourke’s photo shows the ineffectiveness of the expensive guard rails

Deli worker makes time to craft for others

Native Sri Lankan Nandhini Mohan resettled in Devonport 13 years ago. Now, she wants to give a home to orphan children in India by raising money from an art exhibition at the Depot Artspace. Mohan’s show includes hand-made jewellery, T-shirts and baby onesies with digital Mandala designs, hand-woven plastic baskets and a special anti-arthritic herbal oil. It all started during a trip to visit family in India in 2005. “I saw the children there that have no parents and I wanted to do something for them,” she says. Her sister makes hand-woven plastic baskets and Mohan brought a few back to New Zealand. “People really liked them and I thought if I could sell them I could use the profits to build an orphanage in India,” she says “But when I went back to India in 2013, the price of land had gone up five fold and was out of my reach.” Since then, Mohan has worked with the Wellington Christian charity Karunai Illam (Mercy Home) and donates them all her profits from art. “They do exactly what I wanted to do, which is giving children food, shelter and an education,” she says. Her Sri Lankan family remains an inspiration for Mohan’s creativity. Her jewellery was sparked by a birthday gift for her niece and the herbal oil she sells to alleviate stiff joins is made from her grandmother’s recipe, she says. Mohan works at the dairy deli at New World and creates her art in her spare time. “I like to work hard for my money so I know the value of it,” she says. Mohan’s Karunai Illam Charity Exhibition runs in the Depot’s Project Space until December 18.

Top chess masters converge on Devonport

Four overseas grandmasters and five international masters are among 93 leading chess players entered to play in the New Zealand Open Championship in Devonport, starting January 1st. Top seed is one of England’s most exciting young talents, 24-year-old David Howell, grandmaster and the current joint British champion. Other participating Grandmasters are Allan Stig Rasmussen, the Danish Champion, and grandmaster Klaus Bischoff, the 2013 German champion. Also in contention for first prize will be 29-year-old Zhao Xue from China, a grand-

master with tremendous fighting spirit who is ranked among the top 20 women in the world. Ben Hague from Auckland is the highest ranked New Zealander, while 12-time winner Anthony Ker (Wellington) is playing his 36th consecutive championship. The annual New Zealand Chess Championship has a prestigious history, having run continuously since 1879. In modern times the event is usually closed to overseas players, but at the request of promoter Murray Chandler, the New Zealand Chess Federation readily agreed to stage an open event for this first-ever

congress in Devonport. The policy has been a success - 33 overseas players are attending, and 15 nationalities are represented. The event represents a major boost for the new National Chess Centre at Devonport St Paul’s, and also for Devonport itself – around 200 people will be attending the various competitions and meetings over the 11-day period. Games start daily at 1.30pm for the main event, running January 1st-9th at the National Chess Centre, Devonport St Paul’s. The prize pool is $10,000.

Proceeds from poppy kits sold at Wild and Woolly Yarns in December will go the Moataane family. Elizabeth Moataane is battling cancer and fundraisers have been held for the family to cover hospital-related costs. Wild and Woolly Yarns has so far raised more than $3000 for CanTeen through the poppy kit sales. They sell for $10 each. “We are confident that with a bit of publicity we can help give this deserving family some financial support in the buildup to Christmas,” Wild and Woolly Yarns spokesperson Francesca Stafford said.

What a Dream Team! It all started a year ago when we asked Gary to appraise our property. Gary provided continual feedback on what was happening in the market, without the slightest feeling of pressure. When we finally decided to sell, Gary Potter & Glenice Taylor from Harcourts Devonport informed us of all the options and gave us sound advice. We settled on an Auction as they felt it would give us the best result. They were certainly right. Their professional approach made us feel at ease and comfortable with our decision. The number of potential buyers that came through our property in the first week was incredible, thanks to their simple, but effective, marketing plan. When we accepted a pre-auction offer, after one week, they didn’t stop! But worked even harder to make the sale a true auction, the result, four bidders, what more could you ask for? This is down to their dedication, going that extra mile, professional approach, they certainly exceeded our expectations. Thank you both for an easy transition into the next stage of our life.

Bayswater production in good hands with kids From a life-sized albatross to song lyrics, from the script and choreography to props and costumes, everything in Bayswater School’s recent production Tears of an Albatross was created by the students – with just a little bit of help from the older generation. Two of those were Sarah-Jane Blake, Sir Peter Blake’s daughter, and Elijah Whyte, a former Bayswater student. Principal Lindsay Child said: “Sarah-Jane is a puppet-maker and worked alongside our students to make a huge puppet albatross who was the central character and narrator of our performance.” Year 12 Takapuna Grammar School student Elijah Whyte (16) wrote the melody for the play’s song. The lyrics had been written by the children. “I just fiddled a bit with them to fit them into the song,” says Elijah, adding that he enjoyed giving something back to his old primary school. The children’s chose an environmental theme. The albatross and all costumes were made of recycled materials. The storyline is centred on the albatross’s island suffering from pollution until its inhabitants learn to reuse and recycle in order to restore it. In full flight… balancing a life-sized albatross are (from left): Jesse Swift, Billy Edgson, Jasper Moy (kneeling), Jasper Shanahan, Sydelle Langis, Riley Matrix and Elijah Whyte
