Counting Cheltenham cockles

FUNERAL SERVICES Your local funeral home

This year’s Cheltenham cockle survey is set for December 13. Charlie Glass resurrected the survey last year after a few years in abeyance due to poor numbers. Charlie, a Year 7 student at St Kentigern College, is once again leading the cockle-counting event, with the help of his father Paul and the long-standing Cheltenham Beach Caretakers volunteer group. Last year, they and around 100 other volunteers found 685 cockles on the beach. Four years prior, the caretakers had come across only a dozen of them. It is hoped the good numbers of 2014 have been

Local youth rock club kicks off on Jimi Hendrix’s birthday

Inspired by Hendrix, the Devonport music tradition is rocking… local band Slipstream at the inaugural youth rock club session. Justin Pereira on guitar, Hank Trenton on bass and Ben Jones on drums. A Devonport youth rock club has launched on what would have been Jimi Hendrix’s 73rd birthday. On November 27, Rosmini College band Slipstream and Takapuna Grammar School’s Shed played their renditions of Hey Joe and Purple Haze at St Paul’s Church Hall, following a screening of Hendrix burning his guitar at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Devonport Scout Group leader Christopher Jones is behind the initiative. He wants to create a venue where local kids, who are into music, can perform in front of their mates three to four times per year. He rented the hall at St Paul’s for the occasion. “The idea is to fill a gap that’s been there since the Masonic closed. At the moment, there is basically nothing for the 12 to 15-year-old musicians; no venue, no opportunity to play. We used to have the Masonic but that is no more,” he says. “Now you have younger kids playing at school while they are at BIS, and older kids play at Devonstock, where they really need to bring along their own material. But there is nothing for the kids in between,” he says. Jones’s son Ben, who shares the same birthday as Hendrix and turned 14 on the night, plays the drums, bass, cello and piano. He plays electric bass in Shed and filled in for the Slipstream drummer as well. Ben enjoyed the first night. “It was really cool. We got a good turnout of 41 people, had lighting and even a smoke machine and

the scouts sold sodas too,” he says. Slipstream is a local band that came out of St Leo’s school in 2011, and regularly played at the Masonic Tavern a year later. The boys are now in Year 9 at Rosmini College and are still going strong. Shed is a newly formed TGS band, with music extension class members Ben Grobbelar on vocals,Volkan Ozyurteri on guitar as

well as Ben Jones on electric bass. Christopher Jones is planning a second event with four bands for next April 1 or 8. BIS teacher Brett Sawyer and parent Margaret Pereira are helping out on sound, light and supervision. Any local Year 7 to Year 11 band interested in performing can contact Christopher Jones at red-dragon@xtra.co.nz.

Summer holidays – overindulgence! Welcome to the last few days of the year! Well done, we made it. It has been a particularly challenging year for some families with health concerns this year, with some very nasty bugs that have been very persistent. We hope you are all feeling much better and looking forward to some relaxation in the summer months ahead. Sometimes at this time of the year we overindulge in those Christmas goodies! And eat and drink things that we perhaps don’t always consume usually. Digestive enzymes are great if you suffer from bloating, excess gas or discomfort after eating – your digestive system needs some help. Digestion can be impaired by stress, poor food choices, eating on the

run and overeating. Digestive enzymes, taken with meals, aid digestion of fats, starch and protein, and promote nutrient absorption for optimal well-being. If it seems to be a bout of constipation that ails you, look towards products that contain magnesium-based formulas. Magnesium naturally supports bowel elimination, encourages bowel regularity

and supports healthy regular elimination by attracting water into the bowel to soften stool. Herbal extracts can also be of assistance with this. Come in and ask us what would suit you best. Probiotics are another great product to look at for the summer months, with excess food and support for when food has not been prepared or stored as well as it should have been. Probiotics will aid in the maintenance of a normal healthy gastrointestinal system and digestive function, may be useful for the symptoms of bloating, gas or flatulence, and may help maintain normal healthy urogenital flora.

Catching up with Eliza McCartney ended 2015 on a 4.5-metre high. The local pole-vaulting star improved her personal best by 5 cm and set a new national senior women’s pole vault record at a recent Auckland Summer Series athletics meet. She also reached the 2016 Olympic B qualification standard and is now highly likely to go to Rio next August. McCartney, who will turn 19 this month, says it was a mental and technical breakthrough. “I had not bettered my PB since the world juniors last year,” she says. Even two weeks before the Mt Smart stadium event, the 4.5 m clearance would have been a surprise, she says. “Only in the last week before the event did it become obvious that it was achievable and I just had to go out and do it,” she says. It was a tough start to 2015. “I experienced quite a few barriers, mainly mental ones, that I was struggling to overcome,” she says. She even had trouble getting off the ground. “I would run up to the mat and basically stop there. It’s called a run-through and every pole-vaulter experiences it at some point,” she says. McCartney says it takes experience and mental toughness to overcome this. “The support I had all around me was amazing, but I also had to take responsibility myself. In the end it was me who needed to sort it out,” she says. Now, McCartney can see the upside. “It was a learning experience. I had to get into the situation to find my way out of it. So when it comes up again, I will hopefully be able to deal with it a lot quicker.” And it will happen again. “Even the best in the world experience it,” she says. Technically, the year has been a leap forward as well. “I have always been pretty good at the run-up and take-off, but once I’m in the air, I’m not so good. So this year I basically worked a lot on keeping in line with the pole once I am off the ground and then on the pull and push across the bar,” she says. McCartney’s coach Jeremy McColl has created a special short downhill run to help with that. “It simulates a longer run-up but saves your energy, so you can work on the air bit instead of the runway bit,” she says. McColl has been McCartney’s coach since she started in the sport five years ago. This year was also McCartney’s first at the University of Auckland on a Prime Minister’s Scholarship. She did four papers for a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and loved it. “Medicine is still what I want to do one day, when pole-vaulting is finished. It’s the only thing I love doing as much as sport,” she says. But in the meantime sport is her priority and she plans to halve her classwork next year. Up to Christmas, McCartney has been enjoying some free time and is even contem-

Eliza McCartney pole-vaulter

Well on the way to a place in the New Zealand Olympic team in Rio 2016… Eliza McCartney plating taking on a part-time barista job. But in January she will be training in Brisbane with Alana Boyd (31), currently Australia’s best pole-vaulter. McCartney aims to be back competing in February and March. “It’s just trying to get higher with what I am doing. My goal is to be competitive in the Olympic final. It would be great experience for anything afterwards and set me up really well for the next Olympics in Japan,” she says.

Santa comes to Victoria Rd

notes

Viva South America!

Air New Zealand has just commenced its service three times a week into Buenos Aires. Along with the established daily service with LAN into Santiago, we now have two fantastic airline options to visit and explore South America. Traditionally, a South American trip was a once-ina-lifetime adventure. But now with competition and airfare costs down as low as $1500 on specials, the destination is more affordable to visit multiple times. What was once a major overland adventure has become an opportunity to explore the different regions and countries in depth with shorter stays . The must-see highlights are: The Galapagos Islands – A trip of the islands is best seen by boat to experience up-close wildlife like sea lions, iguanas, blue footed boobies, albatross or frigate sea birds. Access into the islands is from either Guayaquil or Quito in Ecuador. Peru and Machu Picchu – Machu Picchu is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world. Known as the ‘Lost City of the Incas’, a visit can include a five-day walk of the Inca trail or Lares Valley. A circuit from Lima can include visiting the Nazca lines, Uros Islands on Lake Titicaca, Puno and the remarkable 3000m-deep Coca Canyon. Patagonia – from Buenos Aires fly into El Calafate and visit and hike around Mt Fitzroy, boat on Moreno Glacier, day walk to Torres del Paine, visit Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia. The Amazon – accessible from a number of countries. From Brazil depart out of Belem and travel down the Amazon to Manaus. From Manaus take an excursion into the jungle and visit the Monkey jungle, and do some alligator spotting and piranha fishing. Brazil - a classic highlights trip is to visit Rio with sights like Copacabana, Sugar Loaf Mountain and the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer”. From Rio travel to the Pantanal and stay in an eco lodge, visit Sao Paulo and Ilha Grande then on to the spectacular Iguazu Falls. Argentina – the country has highlights that range from the most Europeanised city of Latin America with Buenos Aires, to the breathtaking salt mines in Salta, archaeological ruins of Humahuaca to the Iguazu Falls. Other highlights of the continent include Bolivia, Columbia, Venezuela, Guyana and much more Call or email us to check out the tours, cruise and self-travel options.

Background on bay brings Darby back on the block Chris Darby is standing up for Ngataringa Bay once again. The Auckland Council North Shore ward councillor told the Flagstaff that he will give up his position on the Auckland Council Hearings Committee to be able to fully investigate Ryman Healthcare’s proposal to build a high-rise retirement village on the bay. As a member of the quasi-judicial committee, Darby says he could potentially sit in judgement of whether the application is notified, “which requires me to not predetermine an outcome or exhibit bias in decision-making. “But I have a hell of a background on the bay and a lot of knowledge on the block, so I have decided to dispense with my Hearing Committee role and to get involved,” he says. Darby’s work as a key member of the Ngataringa Bay Society began with the group’s fight of Bayswater Marina’s proposed development of a six-storey hotel in the late 1990s ,and he remained active long after. As the former chair of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, Darby was also involved in the transfer of the 4.2 ha Wakakura Block land as part of the government’s Treaty settlement with Ngati Whatua o Orakei. “In general, I support the proposal to establish a fully integrated retirement accommodation at Ngataringa Road,” Darby says, adding that he would meet with Ryman Healthcare as well as Whai Rawa, Ngati Whatua’s investment arm, to learn more about the plan details. Last week, Darby, who is also Auckland

Council’s Urban Design Champion, pushed for Ryman’s proposal to be referred to council’s Urban Design Panel. Ryman had not chosen to go through the panel voluntarily before submitting its resource consent application. Late last week, council staff decided to refer the application on to the panel retroactively, Darby says. The panel was to be considering it in its last meeting of the year, after the Flagstaff had gone to press. Darby says he is concerned that even though a 20-metre marginal strip was set aside on the site’s southern coastal boarder along Ngatargina Bay, Ryman wants permission to carry out site works within the marginal strip for a storm-water outlet structure. The works would involve the removal of mangroves, the application states. Members of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board were non-committal on the retirement home proposal when contacted by the Flagstaff. Member Mike Cohen said many locals will be pleased about having a lifestyle village in Devonport because it means they will be able to stay in the suburb if they want to downsize. He said the Ryman proposal was more an issue of scale, people living near the site would be likely to be aggrieved if the submission wasn’t notified. Board members Dianne Hale and Grant Gillon did not respond to the Flagstaff question on whether they would support notification of the resource consent application.

Landscaping supplies business set to leave Devonport Devonport gardeners and landscape designers might have to travel to Wairau Park for their supplies early next year. Central Landscape site manager Paul Maddox says his business is closing next month. Auckland Council spokesperson Jade Cooper says council is still in negotiations for a new contract. “We are expecting the new contract to start around March/April 2016,” she says. Maddox says they are leaving before that. “Living Earth, who holds the lease, told us that our place is shutting down in January, but we haven’t been given a date yet. First it was supposed to be February, but they have moved it forward now,” he says. Auckland Council called for tenders for a new operator of the Devonport Transfer Station in May, but has been quiet about its future plans for the site since. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Mike Cohen says he was perplexed by Maddox’s news. Devonport resident Richard Tong, who put in a tender to run the centre, has not had a response from council, he says.

Increased traffic movements onto main road “less than minor” Around 65 cars coming in and out of a planned childcare centre onto an already busy Devonport road at peak traffic times is a “less than minor” matter,” say traffic engineers. Butterbee’s Childcare, a centre for 60 children, is proposed for 159 Victoria Rd, with the resource consent application now lodged with council. The residential site currently has two entrances, with a northbound bus stop located between them, effectively blocking the southern entrance. A southbound bus stop is located directly across Victoria Road. A shared footpath and cycle path goes past, and short-term parking spots for the local dairy and takeaways are only metres away. Minutes of a “pre-planning meeting” with property owners Jo and Paul Blair show that

council staff are concerned about traffic safety during drop-off and pick up times, added to the multiple footpath users. “Traffic matters” raised by council include: • a bus stop located directly in front of the planned ingress vehicle crossing • the high number of users of the footpath, including a Walking School Bus, cyclists, pedestrians and bus passengers. As a result, council staff asked the Blairs to provide a fuller traffic management report. An initial report submitted with the application – “Integrated Traffic Assessment” by Abley Transportation Consultants – said that the centre’s traffic generation was “minimal”, with an estimated 66 trips at peak hour added to the roughly 1,300 vehicles coming past every rush hour. The effect would be “less than minor.”

A one-way drive at the site, with the southern gate the entry, and the northern the exit, would “maximise safety,” the report says. Entry from the south gives the “best possible view of waiting buses, pedestrians and cyclists before crossing the footpath,” it says. Exit from the north “allows vehicles to queue within the site until approaching vehicles, waiting buses, pedestrians and cyclists have cleared the roadside fronting of the site.” Semi-open fencing provides “relatively good visibility,” it continues, concluding that this access arrangement would lead to “less than minor effects.” The Flagstaff understands that last week the resource consent application was temporarily on hold, following a request for further information. No decision on whether the application will be publicly notified had been made.

Fault in map could be cause for loss of Stanley Bay

Jeremy Rotherham isn’t one to give up easily. For months, the Stanley Bay resident has been searching for what caused the official renaming of his childhood suburb from Stanley Bay to Stanley Point. Now he reckons a faulty map is at fault. The map of Devonport, still displayed outside the Devonport Ferry building, might be at the root of the 2007 renaming, he says. “It shows the localities of Devonport and has the names Swapped Stanleys… the faulty map of Stanley Bay and Stanley Point But the review’s final consultation records around the wrong way, suggesting that Stanley Bay has only three streets and is the show something odd, says Rotherham. “It says: ‘It was agreed that the area indicated for much smaller of the two,” he says. And size mattered in the renaming, Rother- Stanley Bay was too small. Therefore Stanley Point suburb name remains as it is and Roslyn ham discovered. In 2004, a North Shore City Suburb Names Terrace is the eastern boundary of the suburb.’ “I believe that it was in these comments that a and Boundaries Review prompted a suburb inventory. The review looked at published mistake was made, because the old Stanley Bay street maps, all of which listed Stanley Bay area was considerably larger than Stanley Point, as the main suburb. It also considered Census which comprised only three streets,” he says. The faulty map could be at the root of it Area labels, which again named Stanley Bay, all. “The map is wrong and may explain the Rotherham says. The review asked whether there was a decision made. “My point is that they chose the wrong name prevailing local name usage. Rotherham has searched through historical sources, newspa- and I believe it warrants being revisited and pers, magazines and the internet and found reconsidered,” says Rotherham, who took his Stanley Bay was, and still is, the area’s most concerns to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board forum earlier this month. common name.

No need to drive out of Devonport this Christmas

Good Car-Ma

(for Christmas…. and beyond) ‘Tis the season of goodwill, and that, fellow Devonportians, extends to other drivers! I have been ,recognising some subtle differences in driving behaviours peculiar to NZ. In the UK for example, indicating means ‘Please hold back and give me space, I am about to make a manoeuvre’. In NZ I believe it means ‘Please cut me up through my blind spot and give us both a heart attack’. Similarly, seeing a car waiting at a side road, such as you will find along Lake Road, with slow-moving traffic, in some countries suggests a need to let that car pull out into a space. But I believe the literal interpretation locally is ‘stare straight ahead and jam up to the car in front so close you can read their mileage’. My personal favourite is the NZ take on how to treat a car manoeuvring slowly, perhaps reversing from a parking space. I think the NZ road code must suggest ‘Pull to the other lane at speed and try to have a head-on smash’ as the correct answer there, judging by the times this option is selected… So, over the holidays, let’s try and leave earlier, let someone in, pass on a smile and a wave, pay it forward with generous road manners, and improve the driving experience for us all. We’re in this together! Merry Christmas!

Chinese connection: big gym spend group of investors from Kunming in China has grown from the relationships built through the school’s international student recruitment. “Discussions have been active for many years and have progressed to a stage where the investors will be visiting the school in February next year.” “While discussions are embryonic, the development represents an exciting opportunity for the school,” says Lamb. Updates on any further progress made would

be shared as “the community will be very interested in a facility that will offer them access to fitness and gymnasium spaces,” he said. The school first lodged a submission for a community leisure centre and swimming pool with North Shore City Council in 2006. In 2008, the school and council conducted a community survey. The project had strong support among locals, the Navy and the then Devonport Community Board. However, it struggled to get financial support from council.

New Devonport wharf tenant remains at large Devonport”s new wharf building is gathering dust and cobwebs. Five months after completion, the $5.5 million makeover at the northern end of the wharf building remains empty. This indicates the space will head into 2016 untenanted and could remain vacant for the rest of the summer. The new glass-walled renovation already has a somewhat tainted history. The Flagstaff revealed that late in July a barn-raising Auckland Transport (AT) invitation-only party on the wharf for around 80 people cost ratepayers $19,000. In August, AT’s preferred and seemingly secured tenant, a new hospitality business, gave the venue the thumbs down at the last minute. AT has been looking for a new vendor since then, and told the Flagstaff on October 30 that they were “a couple of weeks away from an announcement.” However, last week, AT spokesperson Mark Hannan said “at this stage there is no update on Devonport Wharf.” • Meanwhile at the other end of the wharf, a hub of Devonport businesses has taken over the upstairs space.

A paramedic in training – at age seven Sam O’Sullivan (7) loves helping, especially his twin brothers Ben and Josh (5) who are severely allergic to tree nuts. Now Sam has been recognised in the community – he has just received the 2015 Award of Excellence of the Devonport St John’s Youth Division. He is its youngest member (Year 2 at Vauxhall School). Sam joined St John halfway through the year when he was still six. “I saw a poster that said Devonport St John and had a penguin on it. I wanted to join because Josh had anaphylaxis and we didn’t know and went to Shorecare and his throat was closing,” he says. Sam wants to be able to help in case either of his bothers has a reaction again, he says. Ben and Josh are identical twins and equally allergic. Mum Kirstin says that with Josh’s severe reaction after eating a cracker with pesto at a Boxing Day party two years ago, Sam likes to keep an eye on what his brothers eat while away from home. He also started asking about learning CPR and first aid, and Kirsten says she wasn’t surprised when Sam wanted to join St John instead of Scouts. “At first he joined on a trial basis and I was pretty sure he would pull out, being quite reserved by nature. He was the only kid from his school and the only boy in his group. But no, I was proved very wrong. I think he’ll be doing it until he is through high school,” she says. This year, Sam was in the Penguin group for 6 – 8 year olds and completed his Resourceful and Communication Badges, and learned how to parade and march. CPR and first aid are being taught in Cadet group for 8 – 18 year-olds. Sam wants to be a paramedic when he grows up and says he will be back at St John next year. He has also inspired his brothers to join.

Home help… Sam O’Sullivan (at right) with younger brothers Ben (sitting) and Josh Dad Brendan says he is very proud of his oldest son. “This was his idea and he instigated it all. Kirsten and I really questioned him and he was so adamant and enthusiastic and has worked very hard in the group to get this award,” he says. Kirsten says she likes the values St John promotes. “It’s got a great purpose while

also teaching life skills. It’s all about being altruistic, helping and thinking of others and not just yourself,” she says. “With Josh’s reaction, we learned the hard way that it’s important to know what to do in an emergency so that you can look after people,” she says.

Appalled by potential poisoning I was disgusted to read of the likely poisoning of the Holm oak tree at Cheltenham Beach. By attacking an historical natural treasure, the culprit(s) shows his or her moral bankruptcy and selfishness. That he or she would most likely have carried out the poisoning under the cover of darkness proves the offender knows that his or her actions are wrong and have to be concealed. It’s likely that the suspected offence was committed to improve someone’s sea views. It is absolutely bizarre to choose to live in Devonport, which is noted for its natural beauty and historical significance, yet seek to destroy the very things that attract people to this suburb. I hope that whoever is responsible is caught

and held accountable for his or her destructive, self-serving, underhand behaviour. On a separate matter: I thoroughly enjoy the regular letters from your correspondent, Mr Ron Dykman. I recall that a few months ago, another correspondent suggested that Mr Dykman’s letters should not be published, because his strong views could cause the Flagstaff’s readership to decline. This is a ridiculous suggestion and was an attempt to stifle freedom of speech and democracy. Mr Dykman often provides astute political and social commentary in an entertaining style. Long may he continue to do so. Gemma Claire

Devonport 2025 continued

Though watching TV (briefly) the other night, and only mildly infected by Hoskinitus, I would modestly claim twenty-twenty optical vision. However, the same clarity does not apply to my clairvoyant vision – full ultra-high definition 1080i is difficult to achieve, especially as you get older. Possibly some of you may have been able to regard a couple of events in my last preview of the future Devonport as unlikely. That’s clairvoyancy for you, and the intervention of a parallel universe is not unknown. Since then, a shuffle of the runes has produced more startling news: Fullerdrones, now with AGA (anti-gravity assist), float 100m above the harbour and sail the ever-increasing number of visitors serenely to the drone pads on the end of each of the new wharfs. The Village Event Centre, nicely filling the neglected vacant space beside the still fondly regarded library, was a huge success

featuring weekly sporting and music fixtures. The debate regarding the futile necessity of having to remove the portaloos lining the street outside the centre after each event seems to be ongoing. Persistent encouragement by a local politician has seen the Esplanade Hotel compulsorily purchased by the Auckland Mega City Council, from a wily overseas investor. Suitably upgraded and earthquake-proofed, the now Official Residence of the Lord Mayor was looking splendid. Sound clarity was not good, but I am pretty sure it was, for some reason, referred to locally as ‘Banksie’s Bach’. Forthright advice indicates I should now cease providing this source of information to you: the same advice also being given to another notable contributor. Should there be offers to cross my palm, even with ‘gold’, I would respectfully decline. Peter Norwood

Roger’s work on Mt Vic should be appreciated Gob smacking article in the December 4 edition on Roger Giles, and so disappointing to read the council’s unappreciative view of his great efforts. Roger is fantastic, inspirational and greatly appreciated for his care and attention of Mt Victoria. Roger sets such a great example to many kids who wave out to him and now also look to do their bit picking up any rubbish they see and whacking the odd weed. The Council being critical of his work further demonstrates how detached from the community they are and their general lack of common sense. An alternative suggestion is for the local board to give Roger some budget, get him access to a couple of council-paid assistants and fund it by redeploying the money we spend employing jobsworth project leaders at the council who consume our rates and oxygen without adding any value. I also do wonder if the council and Maunga Authority have considered that Mt Victoria is hardly an historic pristine site that will be unacceptably damaged by manual weed

removal. On a quick assessment, it has high foot traffic on a small land area, it houses a water reservoir filling the crater, transmitter station, music venue in the bunker, a school with 400 kids, tennis court and play centre with bottom entirely ringed by houses churches and a graveyard. With all this occupancy and use it doesn’t seem to be an area suitable for the dispersal of chemicals? We are lucky in Devonport to have people like Roger contributing to our community. Neither the council nor Mauga Authority have shown any proactive ability in maintaining Mt Victoria. They haven’t even marked or fenced off areas for “protection”. Even when reactively responding to issues they have been found short, lacking budget and invention. Given the council can’t even maintain the footpaths properly – and have been widely reported as wanting to reduce local gardening maintenance – maybe they should get the basics right before hassling Roger. Vast expansion and apathy are not the way forward

When you observe the antics and thought patterns of local activists, you really see how problems never get addressed in any meaningful way. I overheard a German university lecturer in Corelli’s a while back, discussing infrastructure and engineering in our city: wastewater, water, power, transport. He said with passion that – “you Kiwis don’t ever ask zee right questions”. It’s no wonder everything in this country is in a shambles. This morning in Corellis the Rotary people had a speaker saying, “we don’t challenge authority enough in this country and the apathy of the community is damaging our number-8 wire abilities to get things done like we did in the old days.” We are deteriorating and are too accepting. He’s right. Slowly but surely, the PM, the MPs and their cronies are creating a mindless dictatorship. The kind that allows a Treaty settlement to go down with $30 million owed, but $100 million in land and building

Another summer of ferry unreliability? Last summer it was not possible to rely on the Devonport ferry leaving on time (or even leaving at all). It seems that the same situation is developing once again, with scheduled services running late and, in the case of the 1.30 Auckland to Devonport service today December 3, not running at all. After three apologetic public announcements that the ferry would be five, then 10, then 15 minutes late, and two false alarms with ferries unloading passengers but not taking any on, the Kea turned up but did not leave until 2 pm, the start of its and its crew’s afternoon shift. Planning ahead based on the previous year’s experience and knowledge of cruise ship arrival, school holiday trips, office party bookings etc should (and would) have prevented what looks like a repeat for Devonport of summer unreliability.

assets awarded. Much of this land giveaway is heading towards crowded ghetto-type housing, that is lucrative for the developers feeding into a choked road system. Some deluded academics think we should all be riding bikes to get over these transport issues. Then on a hot afternoon we see a group of idiots wearing full chemical protection gear, marching with banners worrying about spraying a few noxious weeds with Roundup. All we need is safe application practices for spraying. I reckon these clowns are paid to distract us from the real issues in Devonport. It’s not the weeds that are the worry, it’s the rats… I reckon we will lose our Esplanade Hotel to apartments soon, and infill housing will destroy this town. The powers that be are advocating vast expansion and speculation. These fools seem to think that unsustainable expansion and growth is the only way forward. They say we need more housing. I say we should stop

bringing in hordes of new people we can’t sustain, nor need. It’s lunacy to encourage endless expansion and it’s unsustainable. But it’s the basic mindset we have all been told is the right way forward. It’s all about corporate greed – heritage values are out the window. At least there is now a group called Wildlink working in Devonport trying to encourage native birds. They are supporting the use of rat bait, and advocating noxious weed removal. These guys are at odds with the anti-Roundup mob. Council seems to think they can smell rats, which are killing our Norfolk Pines along Memorial Drive. These council guys know what rats smell like; these ratbags know the smell and whilst they don’t often get it right, this time they have. I think the best way forward for Devonport is that we start to eradicate all the vermin, and then the birdsong will return. Ron Dykman

Retirement village could boost Devonport business

How wonderful that some of our older fellow citizens will be able to enjoy the view over Ngataringa Bay (actually quite nice) and that their visiting families taking them out will hugely boost the income of local restaurants. I remember the state houses both there and at Narrow Neck, and advocate the move to market rates from the peppercorn rent the Navy now pays for the prime Calliope Road clifftop housing it cynically retains. A few issues ago, a correspondent wrote about the lack of care taken by the Navy to protect the barriers at its sports ground. The

simple irony, evidenced by the backyards of houses on the south side of upper Bayswater, is that many Navy personnel have almost zero interest in the sea. As for the retirement village, let’s hope that Ryman acts ethically and doesn’t, like most, hike fees every six months, forcing children to mortgage their own homes rather than cause another upheaval to a beloved mum. This well-documented revolting practice is what makes retirement homes such a great investment to shareholders such as Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter. R. France

Ryman self-serving and arrogant Ryman Healthcare gave a self-serving and arrogant excuse for not undertaking public consultation on its retirement village proposal (Flagstaff, December 4. Surely as a company “committed to working productively with the communities in which

its retirement villages are located,” it should start as it means to go on and host legitimate consultation Such self-interest makes it vital for Auckland Council to commit to a notified application process. Margaret Taylor

Birds and bee life dwindle with tree chopping

We live in paradise itself but we just can’t leave things to grow. Hard to believe that we allow so much tree felling to happen when we need trees more than ever. Bird and bee life dwindle away when humans chop down their homes. And let’s not forget the trees’ part in purification of the air that we breathe. While stump-grinders remove the last signs that a tree ever existed, we the ratepayers are offering $20,000 to plant food source for our rarely seen kereru or native wood pigeon, although tui seem more likely to prosper. These funds are directed at private properties around the district, where it should be noted there are large tracts covered in kikuyu, a grass imported from Africa. If we were to plant native trees to attract birdlife why wouldn’t we use the green space already available, as private owners have proven problematic when it comes to

protecting trees? Surely the stabilising that tree roots offer would benefit Mt Vic, North Head and Fort Takapuna. There are also plenty of parks that would also benefit from windbreaks or noise screening. The other big plus would be the bee population might have a chance to flourish after decades of chemicals have reduced their numbers to barely pollinating our gardens. Bit by bit we break down our world, without any thought for future residents, including the flora and fauna that we need for existence itself. This whole area was once native bush and is already fit for purpose when it comes to planting natives. So how about $20,000 going to purchase seedlings for the green spaces and Devonport residents protecting them till they can stand up all by themselves? It seems only fair to leave something for future generations. And the birds and bees. Ian Ferguson

Village development ok, but scale needs consideration You cannot consider the Ngati Whatua proposal for a retirement home on former Navy land on Ngataringa Road without taking into account the land the tribe has lost in the region over the last 160 years. The tribe deserves genuine compensation and they must also be able to make the most of that land for following generations. Like any other entrepreneur or developer, they want to maximise their profit. But in the case of Ngati Whatua it will benefit their people. I do agree however that the proposal should be publicly notified so the issues of height and density can be considered. Six-storey apartment blocks is far too high for this area. But

like all developers, Ngati Whatua applies for more more than it expects so a compromise of a lower height and density can be reached. And perhaps this and other nearby development proposals will finally move the council to widen Lake Road. Margot McRae

Bones of contention Dear Devonport community, I'm not one for complaining but I have three things to say: 1) Litter - pick it up! 2) Dog walkers - pick up your dog’s poop! 3) Zebra crossings - slow down at crossings and stop for pedestrians! Since March this year, I have been on maternity leave and have been walking the streets every morning with a baby and dog in tow. I have been so disappointed to see so much litter and dog poop on the streets of Devonport. I usually take a bag and fill it to bursting with litter I've found on a 30-minute walk and occasionally pick up other people's dog poop too! My third gripe is about safety. Every day I use the Vauxhall Rd/Church Street zebra crossing to go to school to drop off/pick up my daughter from Devonport Primary. All too frequently cars pay no attention to pedestrians crossing and drive straight through without stopping. Let's keep our community safe and keep Devonport looking lovely too. Alex Urquhart

Ben Offner on ‘nother marathon – for a good cause Ben Offner plans to retire from marathon running with an encore, and supporting a good cause. Next year, the seasoned sportsman is running two 42 km races in three weeks – one in Paris and a second one in London – raising money for the Cancer Society of New Zealand. Offner (55) has competed 11 marathons so far and is no stranger to running overseas. In 2014, he ran the New York Marathon, and 10 weeks ago he completed the Berlin Marathon. Finishing the Berlin run was a challenge, Offner admits. “I hit a wall at 34 km, so I was disappointed with the time, but it wasn’t unexpected. I had not really done the training required due to illness and injury,” he says. He is still recovering, focusing on swimming and biking to stay fit. Offner is a keen ocean swimmer and plans to swim a few long-distance events this summer. One of his longer swims was around Tiri Tiri Island with a group of friends – a distance OPEN OPEN HOME HOME of approximately 8km. The Auckland City police officer also ferries and cycles to work in Ponsonby every day. “I just started running again and am on my third run in. I need about three and a half months lead-in time for a marathon, so I am fine,” he says. His favourite local running route takes him around the bottom of North Head. So how will he manage two marathons within three weeks? Offner says it will be challenging, but he has a strategy. “I will

treat Paris as a training run and then give it my all in London,” he says. Before retiring from marathons, Offner wants to make a difference. He is aiming to raise $10,000 for the Cancer Society. “It’s about time I gave something back. My wife is a palliative care nurse and works quite closely with the Cancer Society. It’s a really good charity. Not only do they assist those afflicted in real and practical ways, they also are involved in research to study the cause and treatment of the disease,” says Offner. Offner has organised a Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie fundraiser at the Vic on December 20 at 5.30 pm, three days after the film opens in New Zealand. Time for a major rethink by council on North Shore United fields I hate to ruin the surprise, but there isn’t a magic wand. Anyone hanging out for the next wave of expensive analysis in the form of the Lake Rd Corridor Management Plan, due in February, will be disappointed. Effectively that is what Len Brown and the Auckland Transport folk came to tell us. Aside from a bit of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic – there is nothing. In meantime, we’ll make it worse and sneak stuff in to exacerbate it. Moreover, to invalidate the report we won’t give the traffic modelling folk the correct input to make the output valid. Why? Because Auckland Council’s left hand doesn’t know it even has a right hand. Firstly, intensification, changing zones and encouraging development and more people with a necessity to use Lake Road. Secondly, building a large multisport venue at Allen Hill. The council’s business case – on the strength of which in my line of work you would be lucky to get a packet of biscuits let alone $2.4m – clearly states Devonport does not have a capacity problem (between 0 and 7 hours) but it has a competition-playability problem, with an above-average winter match cancellation rate. The lobbied-for investment by North Shore United is justified on the strength of Takapuna’s projected capacity shortfall by 2025 being 94

hours. Devonport kids will still need to play on these pitches as matches are played at set times. So whilst training can be staggered on the all-weather floodlit venue, it makes no odds to peak match times for juniors and youth. North Shore should be looking after all its members, not just for the first team and academy team the top 4%. And as for provisioning capacity to address Takapuna’s shortfall, how are these folks going to get there? Thirdly, North Shore United and Takapuna have put in a joint bid to join the expanded ASB Premiership National League. If successful it will be a ticketed home venue with crowds of supporters coming to cheer on the New North Shore City team. Come on down! So roll forward a couple of years: this yearround, floodlit open-all-hours facility with North Shore United’s aspiration to have a third grass pitch on Dacre Park. All these users trying to squeeze in and out of an inadequately sized site. Lake Road will grind to a total halt. The wrong-headed argument being that “if it’s pretty terrible a lot of the time, it will just be a little bit worse but all the time!” So somehow that’s ok? But with Thanksgiving just behind us, there is something to be grateful for – class actions in the US and committees, in Senate and Congress. Worldwide there is an acceptance

that the incidence of cancer amongst users of these crumbed rubber fields can no longer be dismissed as a casual coincidence, but attributable to the heavy metal compounds, which also leech into the ground from the recycled tyres. In due course, people won’t play on them or let their kids play on them as elsewhere in the world. Justification for the U-turn is odour, but the decision to opt for TPE should be welcomed (unless you are a ratepayer, because the cost to install went up by a cool $1m). Rather like Lake Road - Auckland Council is in some sort of denial - perhaps because it’s difficult to fix and what do they do about the crumbed rubber astro turf sportsfields they recently put in? That’s a problem, and Auckland Council are not good at problems, they are only good at creating them. And rather good at spending our money. Talking of which, I would put money on this upgrade easily topping $5m and it will service just the elites because for peak competition times, there will still be juniors and youth confined to unsuitable fields and subject to regular winter cancellations. So tell me again, what is wrong with not making bad things worse and what’s wrong with investing in drainage and properly maintaining the grass pitches we already have? Elaine Sawyer

Roger’s worth on mountain beyond question Re the article “Maunga Madness ?” – Flagstaff December 4. Why the question mark? There is absolutely no doubt that lunacy is the order of the day as far as the Maunga Authority is concerned. How dare “Project Leader Maunga Clive Jenks” refer to Roger Giles as “a certain volunteer, who shall remain nameless” and how dare he state that his work is not appreciated? Who are these anonymous “heritage people” who believe that manual removal of such noxious weeds as agapanthus is unacceptable because soil disturbance on a heritage site is unacceptable, yet poisoning by chemical means is acceptable? If soil disturbance is unacceptable why then are mountain bikers, with their ever-monstrous tyres, permitted to continue ripping up and eroding the tracks around the maunga. And what of the destruction caused by the rats that inhabit the area? I sight them frequently. They are big and bold and their population is increasing exponentially. Roger is a local icon and treasure (he will probably cringe at that description). His work, over many, many more than the 20 years quoted in the article, has been invaluable and appreciated by many. He is incredibly knowledgeable and not only does he selflessly devote many hours each week to weeding, he also cleans up large quantities of rubbish. This

does not mean that he deposits the detritus of countless thoughtless individuals into the rubbish bins located on the summit – no, he carefully sorts out the bottles, cans, plastics and cardboard and ensures that they are recycled appropriately. Mt Victoria has been seriously neglected by successive councils over many years – virtually ever since the decision was made to remove the Ranger from residence in the Signalman’s House by the tennis courts. I, along with others, have periodically expressed various concerns about the deteriorating state of Mt Victoria, to councils, but to no avail. The very serious problem of the jasmine along the eastern side is an example of long term inaction. In July this year the Maunga Authority called for submissions in respect of an integrated management plan for Auckland’s “Tupuna Maunga”. I made such a submission and I know of many others who also did so. Submitters have not even been afforded the simple courtesy of an acknowledgement of receipt of the same and there has been no feedback publicly nor opportunity for further debate/discussion. The arrogance amazes me and the secrecy is concerning. Go Roger! Caroline Poulter

Bouquets and brickbats I’ll start with the flowers and positive affirmations: to you all at the Flagstaff for producing a consistently interesting and informative wee paper – the most recent of which has probably resulted in a flood of correspondence…including from me. The second bouquet goes to Jonno Leonard for his contribution towards folks in search of cars, not getting into absurd debt. It was also a canny move on his part, but hey, we’re all in the business of surviving. Brickbats to the numbskulls – as in faceless bureaucrats - proposing to knock our Roger off his perch on Mt Victoria. Roger is to be nurtured, loved and cherished – he’s one of our unsung heroes – going about the place quietly with his dog, doing his good works, and no harm. (Not least for those of us who love his inimitable humour and the music “up the Bunker”). Should it not be the toxic, weedy bureaucrats who are eradicated? Pull ‘em up by the roots, give ‘em a shake and plant them somewhere else. (We’ll spare them being sprayed). Another brickbat to the author of the bullshit (excuse my profanity but really….) about courteous driving on Lake Rd, that will miraculously occur after the Wakakura land is blighted by a six-storey retirement complex. We all know that getting in and out of Devonport is becoming an increasingly bad dream at almost any time of day – and it’s only gonna’ get worse. Anyway, keep up the good work! Jenny Nicholls

Women’s vote a piece of cake in Devonport Devonport celebrated the 122nd anniversary of New Zealand Women’s Suffrage with speeches, songs and a slice of fruit cake. The low-key event was organised by local activist Ruth Coombes, who had brought white sheets and took down her purple lounge curtains to add some suffragette colours to the proceedings. She wrapped them around four phoenix palms in front of Devonport Library, the site where Devonport women cast their first vote in 1893. Coombes also handed everyone attending a hand-crafted white magnolia. “Women gave those to the men in Parliament who supported their cause,” says Coombes. Following a speech by Megan Hutching, past president of the New Zealand branch of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Coombes honoured generations of women past by handing out a piece of cake. “Have some fruit cake I made from a recipe by my grandmother, who came here from England,” she told the crowd of about 50 women and men. After the Devonport Community Choir sang Amazing Grace, Coombes got out a portable tape recorder to play Judith Collins’ version of the protest song Bread and Roses and handed out the lyrics for a singalong. “I apologise for the technology. It’s not quite 19th century but close,” she said.

Marking a historic day… Ruth Coombes (left) with Dianne Hale, a member of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, proudly wearing their white Magnolias. Bottom left: members of the Devonport Community Choir singing Amazing Grace. Bottom right: Michael Joffe and daughter Ruth, enjoying the local get-together.

with Devonport Community Constable Jasmine Bundle Dear Readers, welcome to my column and to those of you whom I have already met, thank you for welcoming me into my new role as the Devonport Community Constable. As this is the last issue for the year I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to myself and tell you all a little about my background. I have been working for the New Zealand Police for eight and a half years. I started my policing career in Whangarei, where I grew up and completed my schooling. In Whangarei I worked in various workgroups – Traffic Alcohol Group, Strategic Traffic Unit, Burglary Squad, Public Safety Team and School Community Services. Since moving to the Shore I have worked for Motorways, Public Safety Team and Community Services. I live in Devonport and am enjoying working towards creating a confident, safe and secure community in my own backyard. Crime reported in Devonport has dropped in the past couple of months due to outstanding work by my colleagues in apprehending offenders involved in stealing vehicles. Overnight on 21st-22nd November a boat and trailer with all its belongings was stolen from Merani Street, Narrow Neck. The offenders cut off the trailer lock with bolt cutters. The stolen boat and items included: the boat – a Bucaneer 525 fisherman, 5.25 metres long, white fibreglass with a black road cover – and fishing rods, lifejackets, depth sounder, wetsuits, three removable red fuel tanks (25ltr), assorted clothing and waterski ropes. Three pairs of Luna waterskis (two adults’ and 1 child’s) and

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 31

a Johnson 115 outboard motor were also taken. Art by the Sea gallery suffered a smashed window during the late hours of Saturday 21st November. Unfortunately the offender was not located. Sigdi Restaurant had its outdoor chiller burgled overnight on 19th-20th November. The padlock was cut and offenders stole several bottles of wine and beer. A burglary occurred on Victoria Road with toys in the front yard targeted. Another burglary was reported on Eton Avenue, where an offender had entered the rear of the property but was most likely disturbed and left empty-handed. Two bikes, which were out-of-sight from the road, were stolen from separate properties on Empire Road. The thefts occurred overnight. There has been a report of the theft of shoes from a Narrow Neck address and a theft of a wheelie bin from Stanley Point. Egg-throwers have been busy again, targeting houses during Guy Fawkes and subsequent weekends. Please keep an eye and an ear out for anyone doing this. They may believe it is funny and harmless, but not realise how frightened some people feel, not to mention the arduous clean-up task of baked-on egg. Lastly, as most of you are aware, Northboro Reserve has been targeted by arsonists, which is incredibly disappointing and an enormous risk to everyone’s safety. If you know any information about these incidents or witness any suspicious activity at the reserve, please contact us. If you witness a crime or suspicious activity please phone 111 immediately. Remember to use our Crime Reporting Line (where there has been an offence committed but there is no immediate risk to any person or property) on 09 477 5000 or Crime Stoppers (if there is no immediate risk to any person or property and you wish to remain anonymous) on 0800 555 111. If you are going away on holiday tell your neighbours and get them to clear your letterbox and keep a watch on your property, or arrange a reliable house-sitter. Keep an eye out for your elderly neighbours and look after your pets. Lock everything away securely and ensure you have a sober driver while enjoying the festivities. I’d like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and holiday break. Safe travels everyone. Constable Jasmine Bundle

WHAT’S

ON

DEAR VOLUNTEERS A huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers and supporters this year. We are so lucky to have so many people contribute in a variety of different ways to the Community House, from baking and gardening, to helping in our After-School Club and Holiday Programme, helping with odd jobs and maintenance, teach classes for free, knitting for the community, offering financial support and so much more. Too many to name here individually but please know that we really do value you all and your support. Special thanks to our volunteer van drivers who provide our weekly pick-up services for locals who need help getting to and from the supermarket – they always tell us how much they appreciate you all. And a massive thanks to the volunteers on our management committee for everything that you do. Merry Christmas to all and we look forward to welcoming you back next year. And to anyone keen to volunteer in 2016, we would love you to give us a call. We always have room in our family for more!

There was an omission on the Special Prizes list sent to the Flagstaff for the previous edition. Two Devonport Rotary Club scholarships were awarded to Year 13 students as they move into tertiary studies. The winners need to demonstrate consistent effort and show strength of character in all aspects of school life. The two recipients were Phoebe Rendle and Vailoa Penn. Our thanks go to Devonport Rotary for their ongoing support. Earlier in the year, Devonport Rotary Club provided generous financial support for two of our top science students to attend the National Science and Technology Forum. They were Year 12 students Max Griffiths and Eleanor Johnson.

ERRATUM: In the Prize-Giving Special Awards list published in the November 30 edition the recipient of the Peninsular Cup was incorrectly stated. The winner was Phoebe Johnson.

Putting their pedals to the medals… the wider Takapuna Grammar cycling peloton (above) with supporters and coaches, helped push their stars to the top A record nine Takapuna Grammar School road cyclists have been named for this year’s Cycling New Zealand development squad – tripling last year’s previous record of three. It is also the first year that two of the school’s female cyclists – Elle Wintle and Renee Young – have been selected. The boys are Oscar Elworthy, Callum Erskine, Josh Kench, Jack McKinney, Aidan Nicholas, Fletcher Pearson-Riley and Harry Waine. TGS Sports Director Sharon Davies says: “This is fantastic for our road-cycling students. We are so proud of them all, their hard work and development this year. To have nine students in the NZ Junior Road Development Squad is outstanding and an absolute credit to the riders and the coaches at the school who have worked with them. “And it’s fantastic to have some girls in there too. It just shows how our girls programme is getting stronger,” she says.
