Andrew North is consistently recognised as one of the country’s top Auctioneers. It is testament to his extraordinary auctioneering skills that he has made it into the finals of every Auction competition he has ever competed in. This year he is particularly delighted to have been acknowledged as the National REINZ Auctioneer of the Year where Harcourts agents made up 3 of the top 4 finalists. Andrew calls most of his Auctions from Devonport through to Takapuna and whilst he concedes

Often it is the little things that make the biggest difference when trying to achieve a great result for a client. Andrew remembers all too well the initial resistance to Auctions, particularly in Devonport where the Tender approach seemed in vogue. Now it could not be more different. Harcourts have worked hard to become the experts in this method of sale and it is one of the reasons that so many people

The future of council services in the old Devonport Borough Council building appears to be in limbo. Instead the ground floor may be rented out for commercial use. More than a decade ago the then North Shore City Council moved planning staff up to Takapuna while leaving a skeleton service in the building, along with the Devonport i-SITE. The i-SITE moved out late in 2012 to make way for Devonport Library, during the construction of the new library. When the library moves to its new home in February, it seems the future of the rest of the ground floor is up in the air When the Flagstaff asked Auckland Council about its plans it said: “An existing community trust [Devonport Peninsula Trust] occupies level 1, which will remain there for the foreseeable future. We will finalise the use of the ground floor on the exit of the Devonport Library. “We are currently reviewing options for the ground floor to see if there is an opportunity for a revenue stream for council. The i-SITE will not return to the building,” a council spokesperson said.

Devonport a welcoming place Welcome to Devonport, a monthly get-together for new residents in the area, has helped newcomers to find friends, and jobs, and discover New Zealand culture. Gillian Werry and Kaaren Rosser met at one of the first Welcomes on June 6, 2003. They have been friends ever since. Both are Kiwis who had just returned from long stints in the UK, had toddlers and shared a love of music. It was a perfect match. They signed up to take their kids to Mainly Music, their sons became best friends, their girls got into dancing and these days they still like to go to concerts together. “Music is our glue. The last concert we went to was Anika Moa at the Community House,” says Rosser. Over the last 11 years the Welcomes have been running, there have been many people like Werry and Rosser, New Zealanders returning home from overseas, or from elsewhere in New Zealand. Then there are immigrants. While many are from the UK, attendee data over the years reveals new Devonport residents come from all continents and many countries including: the USA, Australia, Canada, Zimbabwe, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, the Middle East, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and Peru. Many are young families, others come to retire, to work, or to nanny. Xanthe Katsouras came from Sydney in 2009. She visited a couple of Welcomes and eventually decided to help out as a facilitator. “I loved meeting people and hearing their stories,” she says. One of them was fellow Australian Adrian Stocco. The connection continued and: “I now work for him.” Mandy O’Neil arrived in New Zealand from the UK in 2007. After her first Welcome tea, she ran a weekly coffee with the people she met there. “I had met two other
Friendship forged at Welcome to Devonport… Gillian Werry (left) and Kaaren Rosser mums and said to them ‘let’s meet again.’ We carried that on for ages on a Friday,” she says. Tracey Barnett, an American married to a Kiwi, came to a tea in 2004 and remembers eating her first home-baked ANZAC biscuit there. “I met Pippa Turley, M Ryan and Bridget O’Loughlin that day. Bridget sailed around the world with her kids for years, then piloted the boat solo after her husband’s death. Pippa is a world class triathlete, at the time thinking about having her third child. And M introduced me to a field I’d never heard of before then, Human Factors,” she says. The Devonport Community Coordinator (DCC) at the time, Pam Chapman, had started the Welcomes with the late Estelle Cassrels from the Devonport Community House (DCH) and then real estate agent

Chris Rogers. “Chris was selling houses to all those new people and all of us knew there was a need,” she says. Funding came from the Devonport Community Board. “I set up a database and put together information packs with things like where the doctors and schools are, what day the rubbish collection is, etc.” Current DCC Maria Teape and Rebecca McMillan from the DCH are keeping up the good work. They say the need for the sessions continues. “A simple cup of tea with other new residents can work wonders in terms of helping people settle in. It is a good icebreaker,” says Teape. “Rebecca and I very much take note of each person’s needs and interests and then give them as much information as we can, whether it’s about dogs, Tai Chi, walking groups, events or things to do with children,” she says.

North Head secrets deepen as explosive evidence emerges Butler – who has spent more than two decades investigating the “urban myth” that there are ammunition stores and possibly the first two Boeing aircraft buried in tunnels on the mountain – obtained a copy of the recording made by independent film producer John Earnshaw from James Mason, a Devonport local. Interest in the story was white hot in the 1990s when Earnshaw brought a court case against the government in his attempts to search the mountain for the two Boeing planes. An investigation by DoC concluded there was no evidence of the planes or ammunition - which has essentially been the government’s stance since. The significance of the recording is that it was not produced during Earnshaw’s court case as at the time it was believed to be illegal to record telephone conversations. When Butler first heard the recording in July 2012 “I almost fell off my chair.” The recording also has Tizard acknowledging that senior members of the Defence Department knew about the ammunition stored in the tunnels. In the recording Tizard says: “I don’t think there is any doubt about this deteriorating ammunition…that’s why the place was sealed initially – they had the choice of methods of disposal and they took the cheapest and just sealed the tunnels.” The book includes details of Butler’s own geophysical scans of North Head, many of which show the presence of objects underground. Butler, who flys internationally for Air New Zealand and is passionate about aviation history, has always been fascinated with what happened to the first two Boeings which appeared to have been crated and moved to North Head for storage in the 1920s. So far Butler’s calls for further surveying have fallen on deaf ears within the Defence Department, but he hopes that with the transferring of control of Auckland’s mountains to a joint
The strongest evidence yet that sealed-off tunnels and possibly a huge amount of unexploded ammunition exist under North Head is contained in a just-released book. Tunnel Vision Refocused: Unearthing the secrets of North Head by Martin Butler, is a revised version of his 2012 book in which the airline pilot has found what he describes as “explosive new evidence.” The evidence includes a recording of a phone conversation in 1986, where Bob Tizard, a previous Minister of Defence, says that the tunnels were sealed off as a precaution because explosives stored there were too volatile to move at the time.

To our booklovers
Questions still remain…Martin Butler continues to seek answers about North Head tunnels council/Maori authority, there will be a new chance to open up the investigation. From a public safety point of view it would be appropriate to find out for sure if there was a dump of unexploded ammunition under the mountain, he says. “I think the authorities have a public duty to find out if any ammunition is stored in the tunnels and if there is to make it safe. “Disposal of ammunition is much safer today than when the tunnels are said to have been sealed off,” Butler says. • Martin Butler will present the findings from Tunnel Vision Refocused: Unearthing the secrets of North Head to a public meeting at Devonport RSA on December 15 at 7.30 pm. Two years to install school warning lights Active-warning School Zone signs at the zebra crossing on Victoria Road are expected to be installed in February 2015, more than two years after the community was consulted on them. In October 2012, Auckland Transport (AT) consulted with residents and the local community about the signs and gave the go ahead. Initially it was proposed to install two active-warning signs in front of 149 and 90A Victoria Rd. But then “AT decided not to install the two signs and to monitor the situation based on the other signs located at 11 Albert Road, 12 Calliope Road and 83 Victoria Road, and install additional signs if needed, at a later date,” AT spokesman Mark Hannan says. The rationale was to limit sign clutter in the area. From page 1
In spring, when Devonport Primary School raised the issue a second time complaining that cars regularly ignored the school’s crossing guards and put them in danger, AT gave a second green light to the signs. In November, the school again emailed parents asking them to send feedback on the flashing lights idea to an AT engineer. “As a result AT is proposing to install the two signs initially proposed adjacent to properties 149 and 90A Victoria Road to increase driver awareness and children’s safety during the school peak periods,” Hannan says. A speed survey carried out at the crossing showed that 85% of vehicles travelled at a speed of 45kmh or less and approximately 2% travelled above the allowable speed of 50kmh, says Hannanl
Board feeling bullied by AT
Local board chair Mike Cohen says that’s the message he received when asking for an item to be discussed in a public meeting on November 25. “They said they wouldn’t come and talk to us if it wasn’t confidential. But I could see absolutely no valid reason as to why the public should have been excluded on the discussion of a local public transport network,” Cohen says. Cohen let AT have its way that time and the meeting was held behind closed doors. But he says he will not bow to AT’s “bully-boy tactics” again. He has raised the issue before. “I will take my complaint further, right to the Chief Executive if need be. My view is that AT has an obligation to engage with us. No other part of council operates on this kind of basis and with this holier-thanthou attitude,” he says. “In the end we all just want the same, which is better public transport,” says Cohen. But to get the best results, Cohen says AT should engage with the local board “at the earliest

possible stage” rather than after decisions have been made, and that “there is no harm in doing that in public.” He reckons AT can benefit hugely from local input. “We as a board have local knowledge that can be productive,” Cohen says. The same is true for having residents and the press at meetings, he says. “First of all the public actually uses the service and in Devonport we have an amazing reservoir of people with knowledge and experience who can make good decisions better and save us from the dumb ones,” he says. AT was capable of producing some ill-conceived initiatives by ignoring local and public input, he says. One is another controversial bus shelter, this time on Bayswater Ave. AT is also ignoring requests to remove advertising from the glass walls of a bus shelter outside Takapuna Grammar, where the bus goes straight by, because drivers cannot see people waiting inside. Lastly, AT has relocated a bus shelter that is not needed behind the new library,” he says. Having the press at meetings is “a major benefit,” Cohen says. “When things get reported on, they get floated around the community and we get feedback that is often surprising, sometimes good and sometimes bad, but that’s okay,” Cohen says. “The Flagstaff is a major reason why democracy is so effective in our area,” he says. AT Media Relations Manager Mark Hannan says while his organisation supports the board’s desire for transparency, it “often wants to discuss ideas and initiatives at a stage when they are far from fully formed, and that is best done in an atmosphere that allows a free and frank exchange of views by both parties.” He says most local boards agree with this view, “so that they are able to form considered views and speak with authority when constituents and media question them.” Hannan says AT will speak to Cohen to see if a compromise can be found.

Six Christmas trees for Devonport
Christmas has come early in Devonport with six palm trees lit up outside the new Devonport Library. The $7000 lighting project was paid for by the new Devonport Business Improvement District (BID). The BID has an annual budget of $18,000 for street amenity projects. Devonport BID chair John Waugh said this included the likes of lights, graffiti removal and flower barrels. Incoming BID Manager, Judy Grieve, says the new BID funding and closer partnership with Auckland Council were key to getting the project off the ground quickly. “The idea of a major lighting project had been around for years, but now we were able to move on it with a different speed. We got consent only yesterday,” she said last Thursday, the day the lights were installed using a cherry picker. Tony McFall from Deco Light, the company that installed the lights, said a heritage arborist had been consulted. “He is happy with what we are doing. Our lights don’t give off any heat and they don’t constrict the tree,” he says. Waugh says the lit trees are a taster of the impact the BID will have. “It is the first of many projects in our strategic plan,” he says. Grieve hopes the lights will be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. “I think they really add a dynamic to the view as you come down in to the village, but also as you walk up from Christmas lights… Devonport has its own light show thanks to the new BID. Judy Grieve and John Waugh enjoy the spectacle the ferry building,” she says.

Dear John, Thanks a lot – from Roger
The awards reel keeps running for Dear John, a 1981 ad written by Roger Brittenden for BASF cassette tapes. Thirty-two years after it won a CLIO award at Radio City Hall, New York, New Zealanders voted it the best ad ever at the 30th Fair Go Ad Awards last month. The ad is a spoof of the M*A*S*H TV show. It is about an American soldier who receives a breakup song via cassette tape while serving in the Korean war. Brittenden, who was working for advertising firm Colenso at the time, says it was the issue of copyright breaches that sparked his idea for the ad. “Tapes were still a bit of a luxury item at the time and we tried to make it a commodity, but in those days it was illegal to suggest to people that they should tape music, so we had to come up with something else,” Brittenden says. He says the ad worked and the sale of tapes took off soon after. The ad was made on a shoe-string. “BASF was a small company in New Zealand. We shot it in a quarry in Wellington. A guy from Taupo who owned a lot of war paraphernalia heard about it and loaded them up on a truck. He just showed up on the set with a jeep and
Dear John lives on in the record books… written by Roger Brittenden guns and stuff,” he says. “When the ad won the CLIO I hopped on a plane to New York, rented a suit and took a plane back the next day,” says Brittenden who lives at Stanley Bay and is a long-time member of North Shore Cricket Club.

Phoebe top in New Zealand for English Phoebe Rennie has been recognised as the top English student of her year. The Stanley Bay School pupil has achieved the top English score in Year 5 for the New Zealand and Pacific ICAS test, also known as International Competitions and Assessments for Schools. Phoebe (10) is an all-rounder. “I like writing, maths and reading too,” she says. Was the test hard? “Not really.” Stanley Bay School Principal Glen Vinton says Phoebe got 44 out of 45 test questions right. She also got a Distinction in Maths. Phoebe says she checked her answers thoroughly. “I started by eliminating the answers that were definitely wrong and then picked the best out of the two that were left over. I also looked for evidence to show in the answers,” she says. Phoebe’s top score qualified her for a medal from the University of New South Wales along with a medal winner’s certificate, which she received at a presentation ceremony in Auckland last Saturday. Vinton is impressed. “I have worked at many schools in my career but I have never experienced anything like Stanley Bay in terms of ICAS medals. We have had two in maths and one in spelling and Phoebe’s is All rounder… Phoebe Rennie scored top in English and a Distinction our first in English,” she says. in maths

Do something green today For the life of me I don’t know why our council would want to introduce a green waste collection when anyone can reduce their waste by adding a compost bin to one square metre of clear dirt, a.k.a earth. There is little you need to know for a bin to break down organic matter, short of not putting the following in: any meats, cooked foods, onions and citrus. Bugs don’t eat what they don’t like and there should not be any offensive smells if you do it right. We attended a Kaipaki recycling evening several years ago and found a worm farm too much like hard work, but the benefit of a compost bin concept has saved thousands of dollars in prepaid rubbish bags and tipping green stuff
Sports cyclists make up increase
I take exception to your article in the 28 Nov issue of the Flagstaff of the reported 107,735 cyclists in 2013. By far, probably 95% plus, would be sport cyclists that one sees early in the morning or on the weekends. It is rare to see a commuter cyclist during the day. Encouraging people to commute by cycle has been a failure. These sport cyclists presumably used cars to transport their bikes to the departure point and have added to the traffic on Lake Road. T Bracey
at the recycling centre. Although we now have multiple compost bins we have found mulching cuttings with the lawnmower (so material is like grass cuttings) break-down readily. Also adding shedded paper between lawn clippings stops moisture causing a bog slowing breakdown. And the worms love to eat this mix. The best position for your bin is handy to the kitchen for easy disposal but not under any building overhang as the ground below may be too dry. Our installation is on the boundary and feeds tree roots. Although there are plenty who use the compost at the bottom of bins for their garden we only move bins occasionally and never does the bin stay filled for long. You have to admire nature for its benefits and this is one way you can stop fossil-fuelled trucks driving around picking up what everyone should be self disposing. Every little bit helps and you will feel great. Ian Ferguson

Library a bizarre edifice poorly finished and a waste of resources Abraham Coombs has had his say and taken his opportunity to air his views on the new library. He utters repeatedly the value of democracy and sideswipes my views as if he’d prefer I did not have a view on such matters. Rather odd that he would even bother to mention my name. Mr Coombs clearly fancies himself as an intellectual, and yet he does not see the irony of his utterances. I think we all agree that now it’s here, as a community we need to maximize the value of the amenity the new library provides and use the place to challenge ideas, politicians and obsessions and, as Mr Coombs says, “to liberate the mind.” In another irony, the library as it now exists, is a bizarre edifice created in an undemocratic fashion in my view, an insult to our intelligence frankly. Albeit the new library occupies “almost exactly the same footprint as the old library”, but its bulk is about 50% greater than its predecessor. I doubt it will foster 21st century learning opportunities for anyone. In the 21st century we’ve learnt to preserve our environment and reduce our carbon footprint. Whilst I like some features, one can’t deny it was a sheer waste of resources to smash and tip the old building, easily able to be upgraded as it stood. The use of exotic timbers from American forests, I doubt are sustainable, adds to the irony. The aluminium windows
look cheap and nasty. Mr Coombs being invited to provide consultation on behalf of Takapuna Grammar was ill-founded, considering his confused thinking. The comments he makes on the design are his view. The reality is the building is at odds with the heritage zone, and would have looked great at Titirangi amongst kauris. We should have cut our kauris down to clad the building, before they rot and die of that Phytophthora disease, rather than steal timber from far-flung places. Democracy and openness did not star when the tenders went out, that I saw! None of us know if $8million is a bargain or a ripoff for a prefab building, stood up in under a year. From my experience the price is high. As for Athfield Architects and the council’s Heritage Zone rules, both organisations have got me confused. I am far from resistant to change; on the contrary, developing and building is my business. I think most people in Devonport favour intelligent, useful change. The library can never be described as such. I hope the building does become a useful community centre. I sadly suspect it will be less popular than the cafés, bars and restaurants. If it were measured for value it would stack up like the bike lanes on Lake Rd. It will serve a minority at a very high per-use price.
Finally, if one reviews the original design against the built one, the vertical and horizontal elements have been ruined by angular struts. The architects clearly had no idea how to support the canopy or the internal trusses holding the roof; nor did they allow for downpipes. The cheap end window fits miserably into the curved end, facing the ferry terminal, with its rather odd sculptured seating facing the road outside the Esplanade another edifice to stupidity. I hope everyone in Devonport has a lovely Christmas. Ron Dykman
Does Auckland Transport have money to burn I count 10 of these safety barriers (outside Takapuna Grammar School): that works out at $3000 approx per barrier. A they gold plated or something. Would it not have been a lot cheaper or no cost at all if someone had knocked on the door of TGS, and asked if a teacher could supervise, for say half an hour after school? Then there’s the bus shelter outside St Paul’s never used . Then there’s the Devonport Wharf bus shelter. Does AT have money to burn ?!! John Hartley

Winning deliveries this season for North Shore Cricket North Shore Cricket Club is riding a wave in its 150-year anniversary season. Its premier team is currently leading the Auckland Bottom 6 competition, with three solid consecutive wins in two-day cricket, and if the current form continues looks odds-on to make a return to the top division of Auckland Cricket next season. But it is in the junior ranks that players are likely to contribute mightily to the senior scene over the next few years. The Takapuna Grammar 1st XI – North Shore’s main feeder school – has just won the Secondary School 1B grade and will return to the 1A competition next year. And earlier this season North Shore won the Club of Origin North Harbour competition for the second year in a row. The Club of Origin is for under-16 players who return to the club they played for as juniors. North Shore’s winning 2014 side now go to high school at Takapuna Grammar, Rosmini, Westlake, Auckland Grammar, St Kentigern College and Kings.
Club of Origin champions: Front row, from left: Jock McKenzie, Ashton Howard, Jasper Edgar, Angus McKenzie (captain) and Mitchell Bremner. Back row, from left: Toby Robb, Mitch Watts, Jono Kemp, Will Cole, Adrian Young, Rowen Myers and Simon Keene. At a special prizegiving for the team at talented young players to stay connected to the club last Saturday, Coach Grant McKen- their club. Hopefully the link would conzie said the competition was a great way for tinue into the senior teams, he said.

Devonport Garden and Floral Arts Club survives
After concerns of potential closure, one of Devonport’s oldest clubs has survived to live another day. Devonport Garden and Floral Arts Club is 68 years old, but most of its members are now in their 80s and 90s. About 35 members attended its recent AGM, but it was a struggle to find enough volunteers to form a committee. President Alma Murray said that given their ages, members are reluctant to hold official roles and attend monthly committee meetings. Murray though, at 80, put her hand up for a fifth term as president. But it was touch and go for the rest of the committee. When Shirley Wilmer said she was leaving and Sheila Adams announced she was stepping down as secretary, it took a bit of pressure from Murray to find replacements. In response, Margaret Maxwell and Laurel Norwell agreed to share the secretary role, taking turns with minutes and correspondence. Rosemary Giddens, Norma Graham and Gillian Sheehan, signed on as new committee members. So the club lives on for another year at least.
Saying it with flowers… Alma Murray (centre) received a thank-you bouquet for her efforts as President of the Devonport Garden and Floral Arts Club. Sheila Adams (left) and Shirley Wilmer both stepped down from their roles this year.

Cover blown on school-holiday reading Takapuna Grammar Students it seems can’t get enough of reading. In a new scheme students can take 10 books out each over the summer holidays and already 60 pupils have signed up. Teacher and librarian Annie White, who started the summer reading programme, said students can either choose the books themselves, or let staff pick a random selection of books for them. White says that the programme is good for
the books as well as the students. “It has always struck me as rather strange that over the long summer holidays, when there is plenty of time to relax and read a great book, the school library is closed, the books are standing quietly and politely on the shelves, eagerly awaiting a reader, with the knowledge that it will be a long eight weeks until someone can even be tempted,” she says. White is also running a photography
Sadness of German phase-out captured on film A Year-10 German class at Takapuna Grammar has just won first equal in the junior section of a national film competition run by the Goethe Institute in Wellington. Ironically the movie was about the sadness the students felt about German being phased out of the Takapuna Grammar (TGS) curriculum. 2014 was the last time German will be offered in the first year at TGS. The subject will gradually be phased out as older students pass through. The theme of the competition was Sehnsucht (longing or nostalgia). The TGS German class made a video Sehnsucht nach Deutsch, showing nostalgia for German being phased out of the curriculum. The younger German students had quite an impact on the film competition jury. The Year-10 class included students from Belmont Primary and Belmont Intermedi-

ate schools in the project. The jury wrote that TGS students captured the feeling of Sehnsucht perfectly, that the co-operation with students from primary and intermediate schools was fantastic and that they were very impressed by the high technical standard of the film. The film is spoken entirely in German and lead roles were played by Thomas Casement, Jost Claasen, Michael De Boyett, Leroy Dixon, Zoe Dornbusch, Tim Lunt, Thursday MacDuff, Agnar Niksson, Chris O’Connor, Poppy Ross, Callam Shea and Jenna Williams. The film will be screened during the prize giving ceremony in Wellington this month.

competition along the reading programme and is asking students to post reviews of the books they read on the school library’s Facebook page. “So far, with minimal promotion, we have over 60 students signed up and I hope this is the start of having an almost empty library over future summer holidays,” she said last week.

Christmas a time to say thank you Some of you will be aware I have suffered a major heart attack at the end of September. Spreading the word – a lifelong love of language During his 33 years of teaching German, French, Spanish and Japanese at Takapuna Grammar School, Lou Barrowman has given thousands of local children a second language. Now, he and his wife Ruby are retiring to their Waiheke bach, before travelling the world. Takapuna Grammar (TGS) principal Simon Lamb said: “Lou has left behind a tremendous legacy. His own ability to speak many languages has helped shape the future for generations of students, and for that, we are all deeply grateful.” Barrowman is modest about his own linguistic ability. In addition to his four teaching subjects he can also speak Mandarin, Italian, Tongan, Dutch and Portugese. Part Tongan, he maintains he only knows “smatters.” “I taught myself a bit of Tongan for visiting Tonga: Italian and Dutch for travelling.” Barrowman grew up in Ponsonby as the son of a Scottish and English butcher father an English, Tongan and Fijian machinist mother. His love of languages was kindled in the third form at Auckland Grammar when he chose Latin and French. In fifth form, he added German. “German became my favourite subject and I ended up doing postgraduate studies in Zurich in 1971 after teachers college,” he says. While there, he enrolled in the Chinese department where he picked up Mandarin. In 1979, he added Japanese to the list while teaching English in Japan for the year. In 1981, Barrowman started teaching French and German at TGS. In 2003, he introduced Spanish and later Japanese. Barrowman loves the culture behind each language. “Each has beautiful aspects in how they express things differently,” he says. He has enjoyed teaching. “The local kids are pretty confident and responsive, like to talk and say things out loud, which is great,” he says. But the teaching of languages has changed a lot over the years.. “When I was at school it was just grammar learning.
Fluent in numerous languages…long serving TGS teacher Lou Barrowman is retiring Over the years, speaking has become more and more important. There is less focus on absolute accuracy and more on a kind of global communication. Points are no longer deducted for each error,” he says. Technology and group work have also become increasingly important, he says. Barrowman’s wife Ruby is retiring two weeks after him. They are planning a quiet first year on Waiheke and then travelling to the South Island and Europe. “Spain, Germany, Scotland and Croatia are on the itinerary and no doubt Barrowman will return with a smattering of Croatian.

One of Robyn Gibson’s exhibition pieces
Devonport painter, sculptor and current curator at the Deport Artspace, Robyn Gibson is putting on a show for the end of the year. Things (like a walk in the park) is a play on a 1970s’ Bobby Darin song about reliving memories and past relationships and features Gibson’s recent work. Gibson says her work is strongly influenced by the later period of Canadian painter Philip Guston and the psychological language found in the works of French sculptor Louise Bourgeois. Gibson’s work is part of the Depot’s last shows for 2014: these include Janette Cervin’s Blended Families and Sean McDonnell’s Flower People. They all run until December 18.
Art exhibition on Advent calendar A number of Devonport artists are contributing works to a spiritual exhibition. Holy Trinity Church vicar Charmaine Braatvedt has invited local artists to submit work inspired by reflections on their lives, values and relationship with Jesus. “Advent and Lent are the two periods of reflection built into the church calendar,” she says. Carol Readman, Matt Davison, Christine Tyler, Becs Connolly, Joan Taylor, Beverley Rae, Gemma Haefele, Gladys Abitt, Vanda Breslin and Robyn Walker have
contributed. Their work will be shown at St Augustine’s Church, where Braatvedt hopes it will generate even more reflection among its viewers. “This little chapel is well known for its peaceful ambience. Something about the building makes it a special place for reflection and meditation,” she says. The exhibition runs from December 14–21, 11 am–7 pm, with a grand opening on Sunday 14th at 5 pm. St Augustine’s is located at 95 Calliope Road. For more information, contact ministry@holytrinity.gen.nz

On November 22 the popular and thought-provoking Flag It! exhibition opened in the Hokianga, at No.1 Parnell St, Rawene. No.1 is a heritage building, looking out over the Hokianga Harbour where the ferry crosses between Rawene and Kohukohu. A year ago it was a whisker away from demolition. It has now been lovingly and meticulously restored as an arts centre, which we anticipate will be an asset and a hub for the Hokianga creative community. A number of Devonport businesses and local people have supported this project and we would like to express to them our sincere thanks for their interest and generosity: Brendan and Val of Chiasso; Chris, Ann and Jake of Firefly Lighting; Don and Andrew of Hammer Hardware; John Waugh of DOG Law; Gail Marsh caregiver to our feline family. The journey has been made lighter and richer by you. Linda Blincko and Lynn Lawton

THE NAVY COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER FESTIVE GREETINGS TO THE DEVONPORT COMMUNITY
WELLINGTON’s crew at sea The crew onboard Offshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS WELLINGTON send Christmas greetings to friends and family from sea, where they’ll spend a large portion of the festive season. HMNZS WELLINGTON deployed from Devonport on the 17th November to conduct the annual Southern Ocean and Ross Sea patrol in support of the Commission for the Conservation of Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) over the Antarctic summer season. This tasking takes WELLINGTON’s crew away from their families over the Christmas
Commanding Officer, LTCDR Graham MacLean and SBLT Patrick Collins and New Year period, which will be difficult for family and crew alike, especially those who have not deployed over the festive season before. “Keeping spirits high alongside a busy operational programme in one of the most hostile maritime environments is a key priority” explains Commanding Officer Lt Cdr Graham MacLean. “We have a number of initiatives and festive treats planned, which will include a Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings served to the Ship’s Company by the officers and myself, as

WELLINGTON operating in the Southern Ocean in December 2014. well as a Christmas gift pack for each sailor onboard. We will also be providing an important telephone link back to New Zealand for anyone onboard to contact their families and close friends on Christmas Day. Maintenance of morale is a key military tenet which we’ll be working very hard to uphold and I have every confidence we’ll achieve it given the close knit professionalism of our amazing sailors.” HMNZS WELLINGTON will return to Devonport towards the end of January.

Victoria wharf is open and work races ahead on other projects
Major works… Devonport Wharf upgrade (above left) and the Victoria Rd approach to Marine Square (above right) Victoria Wharf reopened in Devonport last week – much to the delight of the fishing community – and work is racing ahead on the Marine Square project, Devonport Wharf upgrade and the Devonport Libary rebuild. Marine Square will be substantially complete prior to Christmas, according toAuckland Transport (AT). “By mid-December the car parking spaces will be reinstated in this zone and the construction of the new roundabout at the Victoria Rd/Queens Parade intersection will be complete,”AT spokesman Mark Hannan said. “The new raised pedestrian crossing and through-flow access for the central car park will improve pedestrian amenity and traffic flow,” he said. There will be a grand opening to celebrate not only the upgrade of Marine Square, but also the reopening of Victoria Wharf and the construction of the new Devonport Wharf boardwalk. The timing of this event is still to be decided, Hannan said. The new Devonport Library is expected to be open in mid-February but a date has yet to be confirmed. Controversial corner…the corner of the new library on Victoria Rd and King Edward Parade is already raising eyebrows

The spirit of summer in Devonport
SMALL DOG GALLERY Robyn Gibson: Things (like a walk in the park) Until 18 December
Gibson’s works are an eclectic mix of painting, assemblage and sculpture that reference happy memories and nostalgic feelings and offer a snapshot of life speckled with her disarming sense of humour. MAIN GALLERY Janette Cervin: Blended Families Until 18 December
These paintings celebrate the repetitive and the decorative, qualities that have historically been associated with women’s craft, while also referencing the vanitas themes of life’s fragility and transitory nature. MAIN GALLERY Sean McDonnell: Flower People Until 18 December
Devonport shops are being brightened up pre-Christmas by specially made decals aimed at epotomising summer in the suburb. An early initiative by new Devonport BID manager Judy Grieve, the transfers will be on display in windows during December and January. “Exclusive to Devonport, the Pohutukawa design captures the spirit of summer in Devonport, and has been very popular with our businesses,” said Grieve.
