Thirty-three homes proposed for five sites A mix of 33 apartments and terraced houses are proposed on five standard sections in a new Ngati Whatua development at Bayswater. Whai Rawa – Ngati Whatua’s commercial arm – has applied to Auckland Council to develop five sites – 50 to 58 Roberts Ave – with a total land area of 3894 sqm into 33 dwellings.

The development will be three storeys with a maximum building height of 13.7m. The homes will be a mixture of terraced houses (six three bedroom) and apartments (26 two bedroom plus one one bedroom). Currently the Roberts Ave sites are single dwelling houses, previously held as Navy

accommodation. The application, which has yet to be approved by council, is the first stage of another major iwi development on the Devonport peninsula. “The wider Plymouth development has a land area of around 8.7 ha. To page 7

First female poet Fellow at Royal Society

Continuing to break new ground… Michele Leggott Michele Leggott is the first female poet to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Leggott, a Professor of English, Drama and Writing Studies at the University of Auckland, was New Zealand’s Poet Laureate from 2007 until 2009 and received the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Poetry in 2013. This November, she was one of 16 new Fellows welcomed to the society. They will be honoured at a February society meeting. “It’s a great honour and I am really delighted, especially since the society has been concentrated on the sciences and medicine for very long and the humanities were added only recently to it,” she says. Bill Manhire is the only other poet invited to join the 150-year old society founded in 1867 by Sir George Grey. This October, Leggott also published her eighth collection of poetry called Vanishing Points. “So it’s incredibly good fortune at the moment, plus it’s summer and my university marking is all done,” she says. Leggott already has plans for her next project, which focusses on Emily Harris, a 19th century New Plymouth painter and poet she came across while working on Vanishing Points, which contains a poem about Emily and her sisters and has a painting by her father Edwin, on its cover. Harris, like Leggott, grew up in New Plymouth. “She wrote a forthright journal about being a women who was single, and a artist. When the town was under siege during the Taranaki Wars, she wrote poems and

included them in her letters,” Leggott says. “So I got my orders – there is a poet in New Plymouth and I want to find her.” Leggott is legally blind and works with the help of a researcher. “She will go to New Plymouth for the next two months and by then we will know a lot more,” she says. But Leggott isn’t sure yet what form her next project will take, whether it will be a book, an exhibition on walls or online, she says. Leggott has been living with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease, for 30 years. She can still tell whether it’s day or night. “It’s as if you have your eyes closed and you get that light field,” she says turning to the window. “I still have a tiny bit of orientation because of that light. “Red is the last colour I’ve got, which is nice because I have always loved red. So when I wear my red rain coat and step into intense sun light and look downward, I can just see it in my peripheral vision. It gives me the best feeling,” she says. She can imagine colour too. For the last seven years, Leggott has been getting around with the help of Olive, a guide dog golden retriever. Olive takes her from the Cheltenham home she shares with husband Mark Fryer, to work at the university. “When we walk along the waterfront and Mark says the pohutukawa are all out, I can just dress them in my mind. It’s like poetry, all about memory and full of visual images,” she says. Olive is turning 10 next year. “That’s when I will get a second guide dog while she will retire from her work and stay with us as a pet, along

with 14-year old Spartacus, our cat,” she says. A key feature Leggott is looking for in a dog is that it will remain focussed when around other canines, “because there are so many dogs in Devonport to distract it”. But she adds: “I’m usually happy for people to pat Olive, as long as they ask.” Leggott is already planning for a Friends of Olive group. “It’s for people who want to take her for walks while I’m at work with the new dog,” she says. When she’s retired, Olive can be as distracted as she wants.

The Ryman Difference

Ryman villages offer a full range of retirement living and care options; from independent and assisted living, to the very best of resthome, hospital and dementia care. Residents will have the security of knowing they can be looked after no matter how

their care needs change over time. The full continuum of care is one of our nine ‘peace of mind guarantees’, others include fixed weekly fees guaranteed for life* (Devonport village $129 per week), and our deferred management fee is just 20%, that’s one of the lowest around! Not all retirement villages are the same and these guarantees clearly distinguish a Ryman village from the rest. We call it the Ryman difference.

Dirty Rat campaign makes a mountain of difference While Mt Victoria seems to have significantly reduced its rat infestations over the last 12 months, in nearby streets towards Stanley Bay, rodents are being killed by the bucket load. The Devonport volunteers who have been monitoring 20 rat bait stations (put up by the Tupuna Maunga Authority a year ago) recently noticed a sharp drop in the amount of bait eaten. Michael Fielding, who has been leading the maunga volunteers since December 2016 and whose Church St home borders the maunga, said: “I used to lug around a big bag of bait on my round to check the stations but at the moment it’s hardly worth taking any because so little of the bait is gone.” For two weeks practically no bait was eaten at all. “Last week, that went up a bit but it’s still drastically less than before. I feel like we are winning,” he says. Church St resident Kate Greenslade, who joined the campaign a month ago, reckons nearby residents are a key part of the success. “Bait stations or traps set up in the gardens near the maunga have helped. They reduce the risk of reinfestation,” she says. Meanwhile, the bird population on Mt Vic seems to be thriving. Alexia Rowe, a regular runner and dog walker on the mountain, has recently spotted numerous kingfishers along its paths. “The other day one dipped down right in front of me and picked up a lizard,” she says. Fielding’s son Alex has counted six kingfishers on his way to school. “They like to sit on power lines,” he says.

Monitoring the mountain… From left, Karen Johns, Kate Greenslade, Michael Fielding and son Alex (7) Devonport Primary School, where Alex is in Year 2, has worked on the pest-control campaign as well. In August they put out “chew cards” to monitor the rat population across the mountain. Tupuna Maunga Authority spokesperson Mike George says students found that rat numbers had already

been reduced back then. “It’s a fantastic result for Takarunga particularly given the severe damage rat burrowing can do to sensitive historic features. More volunteers are always welcome to assist with this project,” George says.

Meanwhile it’s rat heaven in Stanley Bay…. Catching five rats in one day, Celia Walker has set a new record in the peninsula-wide ratcontrol programme she coordinates. The Restoring Takarunga Hauraki’s pest-free coordinator’s job is to help eradicate animal and pests to increase the native bird population on Devonport’s peninsula. In addition to managing volunteers who look after bait stations in local parks and reserves, she encourages local residents to trap rats in their own backyards. Walker, who lives in Rosyln Terrace at the start of Stanley Bay, says she set her first trap with peanut butter and put it next to her compost bin months ago, after picking up a free trap at the Devonport Library. “And I did catch one rat but then there was nothing for weeks, so I stopped,” she says. When a neighbour mentioned she had recently caught six rats in her garden, Walker got suspicious and put her trap back. “But this time I put peanut butter all around it without setting it for a while just like my neighbour had done. I thought the way I had done it before might have made them wary,” she says.

was probably a nest and I hope we are done now,” she says. Walker has since heard from another family on Shoal Bay Rd who had caught five rats. In addition, ratproject.org, the local website that collects rat trapping data, recorded catches of seven rats on Hanlon Cres and six on Ewen Allison Ave within the last three months.

Proving a top rat catcher… Celia Walker This time round, it was all go. “On the first day, we caught one, then another two in one go, and then we heard the trap go again early in the morning and set it again,” she says. Within 24 hours, Walker had a body count of five. “Four of them were on the small side, but I have to admit it was a bit disgusting,” she says. Walker caught another four in the days after but her trap seems to have been quiet since. “It

Demolition wanted because do-up too expensive A million-dollar estimate for renovations is being put forward as justification to demolish a dilapidated Devonport villa. Patrick Walsh, the owner of 19 Mozeley Ave, has applied to Auckland Council for resource consent to demolish his 1910 villa saying it is “beyond reasonable restoration” and in an “irretrievable state”. Walsh says renovating the 133 sqm twobedroom house on the 369 sqm site would cost nearly $1 million, making it “cost prohibitive”. An inspection report and building restoration assessment, which puts the renovation cost at $964,500, are attached to the application, putting the cost at “almost two and a half times more than the cost of a new build on this site”. No one has lived in the villa for nearly 40 years. It has been used for storage of building materials without being maintained, the application says. The inspection report cites damp ground conditions, rotten piles, borer, cracks in ceilings and walls, roof corrosion, unstable chimneys, mould, lead-based paint and defective joinery as items that need fixing. The application says this “makes demolition the logical and appropriate option in this case”. However, Devonport Heritage 2017 chair Trish Deans says the house can be renovated. “It’s what we’ve all done in the past: reblock, re-wire and replace timber as needed. This villa has the key features still in place: bay window and trim, front door, porch and the standard layout.” If demolished, the heritage villa would be replaced with a villa-style design. The demolition and new build “will result in substantial positive effects for the surrounding neighbours” and will

Demolition plan… an application to get rid of this villa has been put to council “not erode the character values of the neighbourhood,” the application says. Walsh’s plannning consultant, Cherie Lane, cites the recent removal of a bungalow at 17 Macky Ave as a precedent for why the application should not be notified, saying “this consent sets a benchmark for assessment of demolition of buildings as an RDA (restricted discretionary activity) within the Devonport area.”

The application has yet to be approved by Auckland Council. In an earlier meeting with council staff, council heritage advisor Stephen Curham disagreed with the builder’s assessment, the application states. But the application says without taking the cost of the renovation into account, council’s early position “seemed somewhat premature and unjustified”.

The Flagstaff notes

I hope Devonport locals get out and support our local retailers in the lead-up to Christmas. Several shops are empty and have been for a lengthy period, and most of those remaining have had a tough time over winter, as have restaurants. The parlous state of retail in Devonport is no better illustrated than by the waterfront opening this month of a Salvation Army shop. It’s going into a space on Queens Parade which has been

empty for well over a year but was previously an art gallery. Devonport has an op shop, hospice shop and now a Salvation Army store. Great for bargain hunters but hardly destination shopping for tourists. While restaurants will be looking forward to the summer weather, further competition is around the corner at Devonport Wharf when the renovated spaces come up for lease. Many locals bemoan the variety of shops in Devonport. But consumers have only themselves to blame – buying cheap goods online from firms which pay no tax or rates in New Zealand makes local firms non-competitive. That coupled with high rates and rents in Devonport make trading extremely difficult.

New principal hired for change-up at Stanley Bay

Colour and commitment… Lucy Naylor with, from left, Zachary Hawkey, Alexander Hawkey, Jake Irwin, Pippa Copus, Saoirse Harrington, Jordan Strickland, Belle Newman, Ben Whybrow, Finn Darragh and Dominic Harrison A large colourful tattoo on her left arm makes a striking first impression when meeting Stanley Bay School’s new principal, Lucy Naylor. She has more than one tattoo, including one on the small of her back. “My tattoos are a representation of the significant times in my life,” she says. They include bits that signify her three children and

two grandchildren, bits for her grandmother, and a koru as a metaphor of her new start in life when she arrived in New Zealand from the UK as a young teacher. A small chain of red flowers – the most recent addition to her arm tattoo – was a leaving gift from Belmont Intermediate School, where Naylor was a deputy principal before she moved to Auckland Normal Intermediate School three years ago. She also taught at Bayswater School from 1996 – 2004. Naylor’s expressive body art might also symbolise a change of emphasis and direction for Stanley Bay School. Naylor says she was hired with a brief “to refresh and future-drive”. When she arrived early in Term 3 she communicated the forward direction to her staff with a gesture. “I had two big skips put in the school yard and just said if anybody wanted to put anything in them they didn’t need anymore, they could,” she says. Two days later the skips were full. Naylor says it “reflected a readiness for change”. A long-time Belmont resident, Naylor says she felt welcomed and supported by the children, staff and parents. “The school has such a solid foundation in place but everyone

also seems open to new ideas,” she says. One change ahead is the implementation of the Ministry of Education’s new digital curriculum next year. Naylor wants to make sure it fits the school and that the focus is on “competencies and dispositions the children need to survive in a digital world. It doesn’t mean more time in front of a screen but if we don’t teach them, we’ll do them a disservice,” she says. Naylor says changes will come through consultation with staff and parents. She plans to have one to two parent meetings each term in 2018. Addressing the school’s declining roll is also on her list of things to do. “We are working on a strategy but at the end of the day the way to grow is to be exceptional,” she says. The roll, currently at 241, already shows small signs of increasing “When I arrived we had five new children start next year and that’s up to 20 in term one next year,” she says. Naylor says it’s not all about the future though. She has printed a dozen historic images of the school on canvas to be hung up in the school. “Heritage is important for children to understand,” she says.

Drivers escape accidents unscathed Two drivers escaped unscathed in separate car accidents within the space of 24 hours in Devonport last week. On Wednesday afternoon, the delivery of a stone bench top ended badly when the young male truck driver smashed into a concrete power pole on the north-eastern corner of Allenby Ave. The truck came to a halt after hitting a second power pole closer to Mt Victoria. Neither driver nor the passenger was injured. A power line snapped as a result of the accident and lay along the footpaths. The passenger said he had fallen asleep when the accident occurred and that the driver had briefly nodded off as well and was assessed by a St John ambulance officer. Devonport Fire Brigade’s officer John Ellingham said the station received a call at 3:50 pm and that a fire engine arrived within minutes and cordoned off the road. A nearby resident said he heard a loud bang, looked up and saw a cloud of dust come from the power pole. Power was lost in homes nearby and Vector worked on repairs into the night. A new power pole was installed the next day. Then on Thursday at around 10 am, a people mover flipped on Summer St in what seems to have been a low-speed accident. The driver appeared to swerve to the right while driving north on Summer St and hit a car parked across the street.

Out and About with your local North Shore MP Member of Parliament – North Shore Opposition Spokesperson for Conservation

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Summer holidays this year will be a time to reflect on some of the changes 2017 delivered both personally and politically. Obviously it was a disappointing election outcome for Nationals supporters and not what the 23,009 people of North Shore who cast their Party Vote for National wanted - but that’s MMP for you and we are getting on with being an effective Opposition. It’s been a privilege for me and a lifetime highlight to date, to have had portfolio responsibilities for conservation, arts culture and heritage and seniors over the past three years. I am honoured to have been elected for a third term as the MP for North Shore and to be part of talented & energetic 56 strong Caucus. The battle to get National back into government by 2020 has already begun in earnest. As Nationals spokesperson on Conservation and Deputy Chair of Parliaments important Environment Select Committee I’ll be firmly holding this government to account in particular around conservation. We’ve already seen evidence of the extreme green approach of the new Minister and the coalitions refusal to commit to the goal of Predator Free NZ by 2050, the War on Weeds or Battle for our Birds, does not bode well for our fragile environment.

My focus next year as your local MP will be to fight for the North Shore to have a fairer share of Auckland Councils spending. Our business and property owners contribute around $80 million annually but it’s hard to find much evidence of our Rates money being spent here on the Shore, for example on much needed and long overdue infrastructure investment starting with the nightmare that is Lake road. With the rates hike next June likely to be much higher than this Mayor and Council campaigned on and the new regional fuel tax and some form of water tax, many local constituents especially those on fixed incomes are understandably worried. On a personal level, our priorities changed earlier this year when my partner Grant was struck down with Legionnaires disease and we are very grateful for the excellent medical attention he received and he has now made a full recovery. To cut a long story short we decided to get married later this year and we are looking forward to a long and happy life together. We both wish you all a very enjoyable festive season and a safe summer holiday . Warm regards, Hon Maggie Barry ONZM

Not happy over Mt Victoria pedestrianisation plan As a lifetime resident of Devonport (71 years), I am shocked and upset at the thought of removing car access for most people on the mountain. As a place we take our many visitors to see the “best view in the world”, it seems ludicrous and overly PC to now restrict it. I have never seen a problem up there with parking and although at this stage I could walk up there, many older visitors who don’t necessarily have mobility stickers would baulk at it. Also the time involved

Question: what does a potted shrub need to survive? Answer: Water, soil, nutrients and the right location, most laypeople would probably say. Surely one of Auckland Transport’s (AT’s) staff or contractors working on Devonport Wharf would be able to work that out? Half a dozen large potted plants, no doubt purchased for top dollar by our council-controlled organisation, have been left to languish among the building materials on the wharf. Is it a case of not knowing how to take care of these, or simply not caring? I would guess you wouldn’t get much change from $2000 for the selection, purchase and transportation of those plants. It’s easy when it’s someone else’s money (i.e. ratepayers’) that is being wasted, but, really AT, would you be so lazy and wasteful with your own property?

Diana Wichtel – continuing on a journey to her past Diana Wichtel says Devonport has been an important anchor in her life. The maritime suburb grounded the NZ Listener senior writer recently as she wrote the emotionally taxing Driving to Treblinka: A long search for a lost father, a memoir about her late father, Ben Wichtel, published this year. Ben Wichtel was a Polish Jew born in 1910 who escaped murder at Treblinka’s extermination camp in the early 1940s by jumping off a train heading there. He spent years hiding in a forest near Warsaw before emigrating to Canada after the war. Wichtel last saw her dad in 1964. She was 13 when her Kiwi mother Patricia left Vancouver with her three children to return to New Zealand. She initially settled in Milford. Ben never followed and died six years later in a Canadian psychiatric hospital. Driving to Treblinka is based on Wichtel’s many years of trying to find out more about her father’s life – both in Poland and in Canada, “and hitting a wall every time I asked for information. I couldn’t even get a death certificate,” she says. Eventually the internet helped, she says, and in 2010 she went on a first trip to Treblinka. Three years ago she began more intensive research for the book, including a second trip to Poland in 2015. “By now I had more information, addresses and graves, and I felt more of a connection to the place,” she says. Wichtel says Devonport has been important to her since moving here in the 1970s. “After a fractured childhood and never having had a home, it became a place of importance and security.” It has also become home to three generations. When she and then husband Philip Alpers arrived, her in-laws, journalist Antony Alpers and writer Sarah Campion, already lived here, as did Wichtel’s mother and stepfather. Son Ben was a Devonport baby and after the marriage to Alpers broke up, Wichtel stayed in the suburb. In 1982, she and partner Chris Barton moved to Burgess Rd, where they still live today. Barton also has a son called Ben from a previous relationship and the couple had daughter Monika, together. Wichtel says she is lucky that one of the children lives in Belmont where she can babysit her three grandchildren. Wichtel has worked at the NZ Listener for 33 years, winning many journalistic awards for her work. She became the magazine’s TV critic in 1989, and also writes general features and profiles. Her job has not changed a lot over the years. “I guess I don’t like change very much,” she says. Wichtel, who has written profiles of Gloria Steinem, Clive James, Susan Faludi, Oliver Sacks, Anne Perry, Richard Dawkins and Devonport locals Anne Salmond and Lorde, says writing about her father was comparable.

Grounded in Devonport… Diana Wichtel at home “You try to figure someone out, put together the pieces, and get close to them.” Working on her book brought a personal change in perspective she welcomed. “I had this narrative about my father since I grew up that was very much a tragedy. But by talking to my daughter, the next generation, I flipped that around. Monika says he was a badass for jumping out of that train.” Wichtel will keep looking for her family. “I now know the names of aunts and uncles and I’d love to find out more about my father’s 26

nieces and nephews,” she says. And she will keep talking about them. Wichtel had found having a dad who was a Holocaust survivor can be a conversation stopper, “like when they asked me in school what he did”. Friends have told her they thought they should not ask her questions because her voice would shake when they did – something she was unaware of. “We should keep hearing stories like my father’s. There are so many untold ones to tell,” she says.

Tree protection rules “make no sense” Multiple problems caused by a pohutukawa on council land highlights inconsistencies in tree regulations, according to an affected resident. Ronlynne Gurney, born and bred in Devonport, has lived in the Housing New Zealand brick and tile house at the far end of Philomel Cres for more than four years. When she read in the Flagstaff that a prominent coastal pohutukawa on a Cheltenham Beach private property was legally chopped without requiring any council consent, “it got my goat.” The pohutukawa outside her front fence has been a nagging problem since she arrived, bursting the water meter located at its base and lifting up the driveway, she says. The tree roots reach so far into the property, Housing NZ had installed a boundary wall to keep them from reaching the house. “Two to three times a year, council has had to come out to fix things. They have fixed the water meter three times since I have been here and water has been leaking onto the road or into my yard. And the driveway had to be repaired once since I have been here too,” she says. She has asked council to remove the tree to end the drama. “But council says they can’t do anything about the tree and they won’t pay for having the meter shifted either,” she says.

Annoying tree… Ronlynne Gurney next to the problem pohutukawa Gurney (68) remembers the Cheltenham tree well. “I lived at 22 Oxford Tce as a kid, two houses down from the one that was just chopped, and I remember it well from 60 years ago. “Now if that tree was outside this house, a beautiful blossoming healthy pohutukawa, then I’d understand that it can’t be cut

“But this tree here is not well and doesn’t blossom. If it was inside the fence, Housing NZ would be allowed to just cut it down,” she says. Four trees on her road have been recently chopped, she says. “I just don’t understand. I love trees, but this one has got to go.”

Trail twins on track to orienteering greatness Since arriving in New Zealand just over two years ago, Czech orienteering twins Sofie Safkova and Sebastian Safka sure have found their way around. Both were orienteering finalists at the College Sport Auckland’s 2017 Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards last month, with Sofie winning the girls Orienteering title. The Takapuna Grammar Year 12 International Baccalaureate students both have a long list of orienteering achievements. In the New Zealand Orienteering Champs, held in the Hawkes Bay in October, Sofie won the W16 middle distance event and came second in the sprint distance. Sebastian came third in both M16 sprint and middle distance events. At the 2017 Oceania Orienteering championship held in Auckland, Sofie won the middle distance and sprint distance W16 competitions. Seb came first in the M16 sprint race. At the Middle Earth Orienteering Odyssey in Rotorua, Sofie won the W 18 middle distance race and Sebastian came second in the M16. Sebastian loves that the sport takes him outdoors and around the country, whether into its bush or different cities. “And each course

is always different, so it never gets boring,” he says. Sofie says her favourite aspect of orienteering is its community, “the people who love the same thing as you. I know a lot of them throughout New Zealand now even though we haven’t even been here that long,” she says. Sofie and Sebastian began orienteering in the Czech Republic when they were four years old. “We have a 26-year-old brother Dan. Our grandmother is a geography teacher and she wanted him to do things outside. “In the end the whole family joined in and now Relishing the Kiwi orienteering experience… we all do orienteering, even Sofie Safkova and Sebastian Safka our mum and dad,” Sofie says. well. “I’m older than you,” says Sofie when Sibling rivalry might have contributed to asked about their age. “But I’m taller than you,” the twins’ competitive edge in the sport as says Sebastian.

Mentors inspire young TGS entrepreneurs

Learning from locals… Duncan Ledwith (above) sets the scene for the day, while transtasman rower Shaun Quincey (at left) spoke about the key things he had learned in developing businesses. “Building relationships, doing what you say you are going to do and staying positive” were key elements to success, said Quincey.

Students put through their paces at TGS Ignition Day Slip-on sprig savers for football boots, a fashion app, a heated wetsuit, disposable toothpaste capsules and a study box were just some of the business ideas generated by students at the TGS Ignition Day hosted by Level One on the Devonport Wharf. More than 30 Takapuna Grammar School Business Studies students from across a range of years took part in the second annual Ignition Day which saw groups of five matched with a local business entrepreneur. The students initially generated three ideas per group which were then whittled down to one. They then presented their ideas to the team of judges, which included Rudi Bublitz, Simon Lampen, Duncan Ledwith and Sinead Watson. Former TGS students Louis Gordon-Latty of Glory League, Shaun Quincey of Genoapay, and Jack Downs, the local representative on Auckland Council’s Youth Advisory Board, were all on hand to give advice and help provide inspiration. Organiser Matt Yallop told the students as they went off to develop their pitches, “It’s all down to how you deliver it. There are no rules.” Emma Johnson, head of Business Studies at TGS, said: “The students gained a huge amount from the day. Not only did they have the privilege of being paired with a local entrepreneur for several hours, but they also learned how to develop an idea, validate it and then pitch it to a team of judges. The experience the students gained was invaluable but we were also very impressed with the quality and creativity of ideas generated.”

Best Overall Pitch… Soul Savers (a reusable set of football sprigs), mentored by Anna Yallop: Hunter Rush, Milly Pearson, Shannon Blackhall, Anna Yallop, Abby Harris

Most Compelling Play… Aquatech (a heated wetsuit), mentored by Tim Gelston. Knight Hou (Spark), Amanda Hunter, Nate Coyne, Zoe Raines, Matt O’Reilly, Tim Gelston

_ _ _ _ NGATI WHATUA ORAKEI

Kāinga Pāho Tēnā koutou katoa and welcome to our new monthly column. As you probably know, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei have a number of projects planned for the Devonport Peninsula in the coming years. We want to make a positive contribution to the local community and are committed to being good neighbours. Part of that process involves keeping you in the loop on what we are doing and this regular column will be one of the ways we’ll update you. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei want to help protect our native bird species and want to see their populations increase. The recent ‘rat-trap’ initiative was one example of our community working together towards a common goal. After noticing

the impressive dedication of local ecology groups, in particular the Devonport Environment Network (DEN), Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei were keen to help support those efforts. DEN are a group of local volunteers who are passionate about ecological restoration and predator control. Guided by the Local Board-funded Devonport Peninsula Trust’s Community Co-ordinator, they meet regularly to plan conservation projects. This is especially important as the Devonport peninsula is part of the northwest wildlink, a vital corridor for native birds as they fly between the Waitakere Ranges and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Introduced predators such as rats are taking their toll. Predator Free NZ estimates 81% of New Zealand’s native birds are

endangered. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei support came in the form of 1,500 free domestic rat traps for residents on the peninsula. Working closely with the Auckland Council Biodiversity team, the traps were distributed over six weekends at the Devonport Library over winter. Queues of keen rat-trappers extended the length of the library. Monitoring of rat kills was encouraged using the Urban Rat Project (a website developed by a Devonport local) and around 400 reports have been filed across the peninsula (see image above).

There are traps still available so if you would like one please email pestfreedevonport@ gmail.com We look forward to updating you again early next year on some of our other local initiatives. No reira, ngā mihi mahana i tenei wā o te raumati.

Learning about the power of nature: herb school for kids Knowing about the medicinal powers of herbs can foster a love for nature in children, says Eva Scherer who is offering a series of free kids workshops at the Ngataringa Organic Garden this summer. The first session focused on the benefits of lemon balm, a common garden herb. While children drew a picture of “Melissa the sleeping fairy” they learned about lemon balm’s calming effects and were treated to a cup of lemon balm tea. Scherer also introduced the children to the stevia plant, a natural sweetener. The children toured the garden, where they fed chickens, got a peek at the beehives, found caterpillars and learned about seedlings. “Plants have children too, they are called seeds,” she told the kids, describing a seed tray as “a kind of kindergarten where we look after them”. A member of the organic garden who lives in Glenfield, Scherer started her “Herb Fairy Academy” as a way for children to reconnect with nature. • Scherer’s classes for children aged 5-10 are free and run most Sundays from 10–11.30 am at the Ngataringa Organic Garden, 27 Lake Rd. Middle of the road plan for Lake Rd A $30-40 million Lake Rd fix is Auckland Transport’s chosen option to address congestion on the arterial road leading in and out of the Devonport peninsula. Public opinion, cost-efficiency and a reasonable amount of disruption are the key rea-

sons for Auckland Transport’s (AT) decision, a report prepared for the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board says. Public feedback “broadly supported” the medium approach and also showed support for the higher $70 million fix, but not the

lower $10 million option. The medium-level approach requires the shifting of some kerbs but avoids land acquisition for road widening along Lake Rd. This means four lanes along all of Lake Rd is unlikely. Its primary focus is improving motorway access from Esmonde Rd. Converting the Esmonde Rd bus lane into a transit lane up to the ramp signal is at the top of the report’s project list. Along Lake Rd, the medium option involves creating targeted transit lanes between Bayswater’s Roberts Ave and Hauraki’s Napier Ave, one block before Esmonde Rd. The Lake Rd bikes lanes are here to stay, and they will be improved. “Provision of continuous upgraded (separated if possible) cycle facilities” north of Devonport’s Seabreeze Rd are a priority as well, the report says. A new bike lane separated from the road along all of Bayswater Ave is proposed as well. Improved public transportation, online travel-time information and ride-share programmes are also part of the solution, the report says. AT is now preparing a Detailed Business Case for the medium option, which includes securing funding and setting time lines. Construction is at least two to three years away, the report says. Firmer details of the actual plan for Lake Rd will become clearer in the business case plan. Meanwhile a recent Automobile Association survey said nearly 50 per cent of respondents wanted the higher investment level fix and 25 per cent were willing to pay for it in a targeted rate. AT said in its report that the higher level option was “unlikely to be cost-effective”.

Playcentre rallies for big send-off to long-time volunteer Bayswater’s Heather Tidbury had a multi-generational send-off from Takarunga Playcentre last month. Tidbury has been part of the local early childhood education centre for the last 30 years in a myriad of roles. Last Sunday, current and past centre families, including a handful of mothers who joined Takarunga with her, gave her a heart-felt send-off. Tidbury, a Bayswater mother of three, arrived at the centre on Mt Victoria in 1987 with her oldest Kate and stayed on as Michael and Daniel were born. “During that time I held the regular kind of office-holder roles and when all my kids finally were at school I stayed involved with the Playcentre Association,” she says. In 2000, Tidbury was invited to become association president and she became an education convenor in 2002. “I finished on that management committee in 2006 and have been a field officer looking after eight local centres, including Takarunga and Narrow Neck, for the last 12 years,” she says. Tidbury is leaving that position at the end of the year. “The thing is that you come here because you think it’s the best thing for your children and you stay because you realise it’s actually the best thing for you,” she says. HMNZS Endeavour entered the Waitemata Harbour and Devonport Naval Base under the White Ensign last Friday for the final time after nearly 30 years’ service. She was flying her decomissioning pennant. In a tribute to Endeavour’s service, the Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral John Martin, said she has made a number of key sailings which contributed to New Zealand, the region and to global security. “Endeavour has had a number of roles including fleet refueller, diplomat, sustainer of our fleet, peace negotiator, support to operations ashore, fleet flag ship, rescuer – and home for the sailors that live and work on her,” he said. “Endeavour introduced a whole new

aspect of seamanship into our Navy – the ability to conduct a Replenishment at Sea (RAS),” he said. Her ship’s company conducted 1464 RAS over her service life with her refuelling rigs and WASP helicopter. “She raised the standard for accommodation and changed our approach to messing, setting the standards that we now aspire to,” he said. “Her capability added a credibility to our Navy – the ability to not only deploy around the world, but to support our ships and the ships of other nations, as well as operations ashore. “She has influenced and shaped our Navy over the last three decades, filling roles when we couldn’t send a frigate and before we had Canterbury,” he said.
