the government had always intended. Auckland Council has now asked the Crown for permission to manage the marginal strips with a view to making the coastal walkway fully accessible to the public.

Public land but limited access for more than two years A coastal strip at the Wakakura block is in fact in public ownership, the Government has confirmed. However the public has only limited access to the land despite the 20-metre marginal strip being set down for more than two years. Concerns were raised by Auckland Council-

graduate at Whitecliffe College of Art & Design. Coincidentally, the school’s motto is “art is life.” Tepapaart.com is pretending to bring Te Papa’s collection out of Wellington and within 90 minutes travel time for 90% of New Zealanders. Regional galleries are listed in 32 locations across the country, including Devonport. The spoof states Devonport was chosen as the North Shore regional venue of Te Papa for its “cultural vibrancy and accessibility”. One of the exhibits in the fictional gallery is Robin Morrison’s Cheltenham Lavatories, Devonport, described as a “prosaic image filled with dramatic crepuscular light”. This real print is currently in storage at Auckland War Memorial Museum. The artists behind the website believe that the country’s national collections should be made more accessible to all New Zealanders. A spokesperson for Te Papa said: “We are aware of a site that was created as a student project. It was developed independently by the student and was not a Te Papa-commissioned project. “Te Papa has not received any comments from visitors regarding the site,” she said.

Writer celebrates 70th with song video recording

Let’s dance… Geoff Chapple dons his backpack and leads from the front in adding to the Devonport songbook and You Tube playlist and (below left) with wife Miriam Beatson The ever-original Devonport writer Geoff Chapple celebrated his 70th birthday party last Saturday with the filming of a newly recorded song Blue Trail Te Araroa. Guests at his party were offered the chance to join in a walking dance choreographed by director Stuart Devenie and filmed by Chapple’s photographer son Amos. It will be uploaded to YouTube. The song is Chapple’s latest work inspired by his trailblazing a path across the country. Blue Trail’s opening lines come from To a Friend in the Wilderness, a poem by Rex Fairburn, who also lived for many years in Devonport. Interviewed on National Radio about the song last week, Chapple said he felt the impetus to keep work on the Te Araora Trail – an ambitious network of walkways across New

Zealand – moving along had come through writing. First came a blog and then a book of the blog Te Araroa - The New Zealand Trail, which won a Montana Book Award. Musician Don McGlashan, an old friend of Chapple’s, produced Blue Trail, which is also for sale for download on the Amplifier website. Chapple, who has written several books, said his first loves were journalism and music. He was once in a band with McGlashan called From Scratch. Chapple is currently writting Terrain, a book on New Zealand geology. He said two of New Zealand’s most popular songs were Loyal by Dave Dobbyn and Royals by Lorde. “Someone has said my next song should be called Soil,” Chapple joked

Len died doing what he loved – racing vintage motor cars

Love of car racing… Len May

Send off… racing cars form a guard of honour

Racing cars parked alongside a hearse provided the backdrop to the Devonport funeral of Len May who died in a motor race earlier this month at Hampton Downs. May’s 1961 Cooper T56 Formula Junior crashed during a vintage car race on March 8. He is thought to have had a “medical incident” prior to the accident. May was born in 1945 in England and moved to New Zealand as a child. He and his wife Stephanie moved to Devonport from Christchurch in late 2011. His funeral was held at St Paul’s Church last Friday. While his death hit the headlines, his funeral

was also newsworthy. Five Cooper T65s were parked next to the hearse, glasses of wine were handed out to attendees upon entering the church hall and an early toast was made in honour of May at the start of the funeral. May’s coffin was adorned with his racing helmet, a steering wheel and a chequered flag used to start races. Old friends all said that while May’s death was a tragedy, he had died doing something that he loved. The Christchurch pharmacist had developed a passion for vintage race cars as a youngster, buying, restoring or building numerous models throughout his life. He was a competitive racer,

who also organised the occasional vintage car rally. Len and Stephanie had moved to Devonport after the Christchurch earthquakes left their heritage bed and breakfast Weston House redzoned. May’s long-time friend Peter Croft said that “moving into a restored chapel in Devonport helped ease the loss and pain of losing Weston House to the earthquake. Life was looking good, the car was going well, until his final race,” he said. May is survived by his wife Stephanie, his children Rebecca and Andrew, and his grandchildren Calix and Jola.

Gone – old Devonport Library demolished

The former Devonport Library was demolished on Monday – with this picture taken just seven minutes into the work . Controversy surrounded the late start of demolition as the Devonport Food and Wine Festival, always held in February, was put on hold for one year initially and now possibly two years. While it took a couple of days to knock the library down, construction of the $8 million new building is expected to take about a year.

Don’t fence me in – access to public coastal land still difficult

The Crown’s confirmation that the 20-metre marginal strip at the Wakakura block is intact is a “great outcome,” says Auckland Councillor Chris Darby. But he has no regrets questioning whether the Crown has honoured pledges to keep the land in public hands. Given the secrecy and lack of public consultation regarding the disposal of Crown land in Devonport, Darby felt he needed to be “extremely watchful”. When he saw what appeared to be anomalies on the Wakakura land titles, “as an elected representative I had every reason to be concerned and want it checked out.” The Devonport public had a “great interest” in the marginal strip as it provided a walkway linking Lake Rd to Wesley St and then onwards to pathways north, Darby said. He understood marginal strip land fell under the management of the Department of Conservation. But DoC was strapped for cash and unlikely to have a budget for the Wakakura strip. “Auckland Council has expressed an interest in managing it,” and was talking to government agencies about taking the land under its wing, Darby said. Fences remain up on the Wakakura marginal strip

Time to get Wakakura coastal strip sorted in memory of Polly Many will remember the robust figure of Polly Pollock working rain, hail or shine on her late-life project: The Mary Barrett Glade. In memory of her daughter she created a native forest alongside Ngataringa Bay on a piece of unloved scrap land that no one seemed to want. It was a joy to behold – a gutsy labour of love by a real character. Polly died in 2011 and the land – although still pretty and full of bird life – is not as

well-tended as it once was. It fell under the auspices of the Navy, who erected a fence halfway along (now partially ripped down) barring access, as they could not guarantee the safety of the whole track. At the Wesley Rd end of the strip a metal fence still remains, blocking entry and exit. The Government fired off emails to the Flagstaff last week stressing the 20 metre marginal strip had been created in the sale of the Wakakura block. Fair enough, good work

but the job has only been half done. There’s not much point safeguarding coastal land for the public – like the marginal strip by Ngataringa Bay– if people can’t use it. It’s now time for the Government to hand Auckland Council the management of this strip so the local authority can give new life to the dream of Polly Pollock - someone who knew the true meaning of guardianship of our coastline. Navy pitches in to help school in cyclone crisis The Navy came to Stanley Bay School’s rescue after it was forced to postpone its fair planned for last Saturday in the face of poor weather caused by Cyclone Lusi. A huge amount of goods were donated for the fair but the sheer volume posed a logistical storage problem. Last Friday Navy staff helped move a mountain of boxes out of two classrooms, which were needed for teaching. The rescheduled Stanley Bay Fair will now be held on March 29, the same date as the Navy Open Day. Navy to the rescue

Another public meeting about Bayswater land A third public meeting will be held about the controversial sale of Bayswater Marina land. The latest is being organised by North Shore MP Maggie Barry, to be held on April 28 from 7.45pm - 9pm at Sir Peter Blake Memorial Hall, Bayswater School. Barry said the meeting has resulted from the “extensive community interest in the proposed Bayswater Marina development”. Earlier meetings have been held by Bayswater Marina Limited and Bayswater Community Committee following revelations the reclaimed land next to the marina had been sold. Barry says her public meeting will be an opportunity to discuss, at community level, the proposed redevelopment of the marina and that it gives residents and other interested groups

Peninsula escapes the worst of Cyclone Lusi

Stanley Bay School Fair was postponed last Saturday and Fullers cancelled several ferries on the Devonport/Auckland run in the morning as Cyclone Lusi lashed the north of the country. But while power outages were reported in many parts of Rodney and other parts of the North Shore, the Devonport peninsula escaped with relatively little damage. • Stanley Bay School Fair will be held on March 29.

Water issue progress After further water testing, resolution of a six-year leak across the Stanley Bay Park path outside Ngataringa Tennis club seems close. More Watercare testing “has confirmed that the water source is not waste water or drinking water and we believe (it is) a nearby property’s private plumbing,” an Auckland Council spokesperson said. Watercare now plans to install a new pipe this week to address the issue.

Local rate could mean taxing times for Devonport A local tax for initiatives in the DevonportTakapuna Local Board area is being investigated by Auckland Council. Auckland Council staff proposed the new tax to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board (DTLB) earlier this month. The local tax idea arose in a review of one of a number of future funding models for local boards. Other proposals are a general rate or a combination of both local and general taxes. Local board chair Mike Cohen fears that a new rate could mean a further tax hike for North Shore residents just to retain the preamalgamation service levels. A local tax would affect only non-assetbased local services such as events, community development, arts and culture, recreation grants and business area planning. It would not affect asset-based services such as libraries, pools, parks, town centres, which would remain

funded by general rates. Cohen is also concerned that council is merely passing on its current struggles to fund the supercity over to the local boards, who would carry the political cost of any future rate increases. “A range of models has been proposed but a local tax would probably lead to a battle in the community and could be political suicide for some local boards,” he said. The new local board funding policy is required by law and, according to council, will help even out the inequalities of legacy funding that still linger three years after Auckland’s amalgamation. Equity was also the driver behind the average 9.27% rate rise the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board area faced in 2012 when property rating was changed city-wide from being based on land value to being based on capital value. www.bayleys.co.nz

Wallis marks 25 years in Devonport’s main street and beyond

Fashionistas… (from left to right): Anna Mountford, Mellisa Middleton, Jenny Drury, Jacqui Henderson and Christina Gibbes Wallis clothing store opened its doors in Devonport in 1989, but the local connection of founder Carol Mountford stretches back much further. Carol had operated two stores in Devonport prior to Wallis. In 1976 she opened Dressbox in what was the sweet shop in the State Theatre (now apartments). Then in 1980 she set up Down Under, below Manuka restaurant. Wallis is a family business, still run by Carol and husband Dave, with daughter Anna joining the team full time 14 years ago. In addition to its Devonport shop, it has stores in Mt Eden and Mt Maunganui. Anna said: “It’s a pleasure working with Mum and Dad…they are my parents but they have come to be best friends as well.” Some of the guests who had been at the opening of Wallis 25 years ago were back last Friday Mary Lyttelton, Jill Henton and Carol Mountford night to celebrate, Anna said. Dave Mountford says Carol had been the driving force behind Wallis over many years. But it was the loyal, local customers that had kept the store going in the face of intense competition from malls and online selling.

More cycleways possible in Devonport

Cycling policy launch at BIS…from left to right Kate Millington, Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei, Jack Featherstone, and BIS principal Nick Hill proposed government funding. Devonport clearly had a cycling culture which was to be encouraged, but safety was paramount, she said. BIS pupil Jack Featherstone cycles to school every day along Hamana St from his home in Narrow Neck. He has had a “couple of close calls” with cars. “I would like to see bike lanes on Hamana – a lot of kids ride along there and it can be quite

dangerous,” he said. BIS principal Nick Hill said Belmont had four schools within a five km radius and “it was very busy”, particularly when schools finished. He welcomed the Green Party initiative, which the school was keen to take up. But BIS and other schools were working on safety initiatives regardless, Hill said. Cycling safety days were planned for later in March.

New cycleways in Devonport are likely if the Green Party has any say post the September 14 general election. Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei was at Belmont Intermediate School (BIS) last week to launch the party’s safe walking and cycling to school policy. The party would spend $200 million on new infrastructure over four years to make cycling to school safer. Among the measures suggested were cycle lanes separated from the road, safer crossings and traffic calming. The funding would pay for infrastructure not just cycle lanes “painted on the road,” Turei said. Funding for walking and cycling is currently only around $15 million per year. The Green’s policy would be ‘bottom-up’ with schools and councils working out a safety plan for their area and then seeking government funding. It is a different approach to the controversial cycle lanes on Lake Rd, which were installed after North Shore City Council grabbed the opportunity to get matching funding from a government agency if the lanes were on an arterial road. Ironically few students use the Lake Road cycle-lanes to get to school as they are too dangerous. Belmont Intermediate was chosen as the launch site as it has one of the highest proportions of students cycling to school in the country. Turei said it was just the type of school to work with council on a safety plan to secure the

The market is still strong! With the median sale price for the Devonport area in February at $1,037,000 the market is still strong. The days on the market has increased to 45 with 20 properties sold. There is still a shortage of properties in our area on the market and plenty of purchasers looking.

“What a great job!!!” “One of the important decisions in life is selling your home. It is also important that you choose the best and most professional people to market and present it to prospective buyers. I certainly made the right choice when I asked Jenny Hinton and Anne Iremonger from Harcourts of Devonport to do the job. While they had the help of New Zealand’s top auctioneer Andrew North to auction the property he needed bidders and that is where Jenny and Anne came in. During the sales process of eight open homes and weekly advertising they kept me informed of the progress they were making. These two experts are easy to deal with and gave me good advice on a marketing plan. People asked me if I was stressed during the open homes and I confidently said that I was totally relaxed. I passed any stress on to Jenny and Anne. They seemed to handle it well!! I made the right decision and consequently got the right result. I got the Top team and Top price. I recommend them to anyone even thinking of selling. Talk to them, no pressure, no stress and a top result. Thank you both.”

Devonport people still have the power to effect change the powers that be (unlike my MP) and concerned citizens in action – including Bayswater Community Committee chair Gay Richards (Page 9), Ngataringa Tennis Club reps (page 13) and David St residents out in force to protest impacts of the Proposed Unitary Plan (Page 30). They set a fine example to us all. This piece of paradise we call home is worth fighting for. And each and every one of us must

I read with alarm the 7 March issue of the Flagstaff as so much of what I hold dear as a Devonport resident seems under attack. Lack of toilet facilities probably lasting Devonport memory for visitors ment, but as mainly independent retailers, we mostly love what we do. Don’t most people regardless of their job have to work very hard nowadays to make ends meet? I for one, appreciate the support of local customers, and welcome tourists from overseas and from within New Zealand. My store did not benefit financially from the large influx of tourists on the day the Costa tourists visited. I believe postcards, stamps and medicinal supplies were in demand, and the cafes were extremely busy. It was lovely to see the streets a hive of activity. All exposure for our beautiful village should be welcome. All visitors, whether they be ‘from the other side’, part of a tourist party, or those attending a sporting event hosted by Devonport, should be equally welcome. Let’s not pass an opinion on who should, and who should not be welcomed into our village depending on how much we feel they are going to spend in our stores. Devonport has plenty to offer and retail therapy is only a part of it. One area that I feel deserves criticism is the public toilet situation in the village. With

Yes, some may feel disappointed that some shopkeepers failed to open their doors early, and some chose to close for the day when the Costa cruise ship passengers visited. However, as most retailers open six or seven days a week I can understand those wishing to open at a later hour on Sundays, either for religious reasons, or simply to spend time with their family. For that they should not be criticised. Many local retailers work hard on the shop floor and behind the scenes outside opening hours, to keep their businesses afloat, in this difficult economic environ-

the closure of the toilets beside the library, and no directions to alternative facilities, I assume locals and visitors are to stumble on the ‘underground’ toilets on Windsor Reserve, those on the wharf, or walk one km along King Edward Parade. Not being rocket science, I stuck a notice on the library toilets door, directing those in need to the lovely restrooms located in the Old Post Office Building. I am sure The Community House and local cafes would be happy to make their facilities available also. On the Sunday of the Costa passengers visit I noticed smartly dressed visitors gathering to use the porta loos on Windsor Reserve. Directed by the smell I went over and also stuck directions to alternative facilities on the doors. What a shame that such a highly organised event as bringing 2000-plus tourists to our village was marred by such a basic oversight. I expect the lasting memory may well be of inadequate toilet facilities, rather than a few shops not opening by 9 am on a Sunday. Fran Stafford, Wild and Woolly Yarns

Gillon democratically elected and capable of working on two boards This move to bring in legislation to stop people being elected to two local boards is overkill. Many local board members have full or part-time jobs as well as their board duties, so Grant Gillon is quite capable of handling the workload of two boards. So far he has been doing a great job. With only five people in this position out of about 130 local board members, it’s hardly fair to say there’s a danger of democracy be-

ing eroded. It’s taking political rivalry a bit far to use legislation to get rid of an opponent. Grant Gillon was properly elected by the community who were well aware he was standing for two boards. Leave it to the voters to decide next election whether he deserves to stay. And let’s leave party vendettas out of the local scene. Margot McRae

Paradise lost?

What are you doing to Mr Dykman’s paradise? Couldn’t believe my eyes – tourists bussed in from the other side of the harbour. Off cruise ships in port no less. What’s wrong with ferries if capacity is a problem? What’s wrong with Auckland Transport? It’s their job to get Auckland moving. Not only did the coaches block up prime parking usually used by families to offload kids for the playground, but public street space was cordoned off for them. How can this be legal?

As for the leviathans lumbering up and down a bulging Lake Road and a total waste of fuel in the slow traffic, proving we are not getting the consideration the ratepayers deserve. Maybe the Devonport business community should stump up and get its own ferries running and do a proper job rather than making our lives difficult. DBA you are getting better facilities in our area to enhance your turnover. How about working for the community that keeps you ticking over between cruise ships. Ian Ferguson

Morning cyclists should tone it down Without wanting to, I know how well cyclists are doing in the gym and how fast they are able to go when they turn around into Tainui Road at about 6.15am. To them, no doubt, their conversation is is so witty, scintillating and of interest to the world, they feel they are doing us a favour by ensuring the neighbourhood is woken up before our morning alarms have been set to go off - just so they can share their deep and meaningful insights with us.

Of course, they are showing us how well they can multi-task, instead of waiting to have their conversations after completing their ride, while they are ensconsed in some early opening cafe perhaps? I wonder if they realise how their behaviour certainly tempts me (and possibly others) to go down the “road-rage route” whenever I am driving my car and come across any of them later in the day. Elizabeth Urry

40-metre bus shelter would undermine upgrade of Marine Square: Darby There are currently five different bus routes providing approximately 60 daily services using the Devonport terminus. Once services are reviewed in early 2015 and bus contracts retendered this is likely to rise to closer to 90 services. Contrary to popular belief buses and ferry exchanges are not all perfectly synchronised and not all bus users are alighting from ferries. Some are getting dropped off to board buses while others are transferring between buses. There are also tourist services and coach services using the bus stop. A 40-metre-long bus shelter undermines the impetus of undertaking the upgrade of Devonport Wharf and Marine Square. That project is in part about creating an improved visual connection from land to sea. A 40-metre bus shelter, even fully glazed, becomes a new barrier to that connection. As a regular user of both buses and ferries I can say it’s bleak waiting for a bus when

there is a prevailing south-westerly ripping across the harbour. It could be improved but I’m of a mind to see what the new building offers first. In the interim some inexpensive vacant conduit laid now to allow electricity and telecommunications to be drawn later would allow us to properly address future shelter needs without destructive and expensive excavation, if a vastly better design is commited to in the future. Interview

March 21 2014

Many Deane hands make light work in Ethiopia For the last three years Sarah and Tim Deane have made a longtime dream come true by helping Ethiopian mothers and their babies to survive in one of the worlds’ poorest countries. Last December they took their four grown sons on a trip there and learned first-hand about the difference humanitarian work can make. Sarah Deane spoke to Maire Vieth. Spending Christmas Day an hour outside Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa and visiting a family with leprosy was only one of many extraordinary things the Deane family experienced last December. Tigabu, the father of the Ethiopian family, had leprosy when he was young. He is not infectious now but has had 17 operations and only half his toes and fingers remain. Today, he is married and has four young daughters and the Deane family sponsors one of them. The trip was an opportunity for the Deanes’ four sons Sam (22), Ben (20), Ollie (18) and William (15) to help out as well. “Tim and I didn’t make them come. But I think at this point they were all too curious not to,” Sarah says. Immunised against malaria, yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis, rabies, meningitis and polio, the Devonport family took off on a plane to Dubai. By the time they transferred to Addis Ababa, they were the only white faces in the arrivals lounge. For Sarah, an occupational therapist, the trip was a 20-year-old dream come true. She had worked under leprosy surgeon Dr Paul Brand in Hamilton during the late 1980s. “I liked the way he treated people as people, taking leprosy’s stigma away. He also was a wonderful problem solver, had trained as a builder before he became a plastic surgeon. His mind was always working out how to give leprosy patients their quality of life back,” she says. During an OE through India and Nepal, Sarah worked at an Indian leprosy clinic in

Committed to humanitarian help… Sarah Deane in Ethiopia Karigiri. She applied for a job in Nepal just before meeting future husband Tim Deane (now director of global sales at Fonterra) back in Hamilton. “I got accepted the day after Tim asked me to marry him! So we decided to not go. But the dream never died,” she says. Three years ago, the timing was better. The Deane boys were getting older and Sarah was looking for a change. First, she did correspondence papers in Development Studies at Massey University. “Tim and I have been interested in development work since forever - not just emotionally but also on a mental level, as a problem that we would like to help solve. I also wanted to learn more because it can be too much emotionally if you don’t know enough facts, don’t understand the country you are working in or how its culture works,” Sarah says. The Deanes knew they couldn’t do it on their own. “We looked for a New Zealand organisation to work with and wanted the work to come from the ground up, so local people make the decisions and direct the projects and Westerners like us are just supporting them,” she says. They chose the Christian NGO Tear Fund. That was three years ago. Since then, the Deanes have been working through the Child Survival Programme run by Tear Fund in collaboration with an Ethiopian partner. Its premise is that a healthy start in life is the key to long-term survival and a way out of poverty. The programme provides medical resources, such as growth monitoring, oral rehydration, immunisation and nutritious food for the babies. It also educates mothers in literacy, numeracy and family planning. “It is run out of two small rooms attached to a school and reminds me of Plunket in a way. We went to a mothers’ coffee morning in

a field. The mums were discussing the same things that we would discuss, the different traits of their children, how to manage sleep and diet. The kids were just playing like our kids,” Deane says. Without the programme parents would be busy just trying to survive each day; with it, they are free to plan a future for their babies, she says. Flicking through photos she took during the trip, well-fed babies are looked after by healthy looking mothers. “The light in the mothers’ eyes is just amazing. They have so much self-esteem and most of them have a small income-generating project, a goat or a sewing machine,” she says. Once the babies turn three, they progress into Tear Fund’s Child Sponsorship programme. The Deanes sponsor Tigabu’s daughter Tsion, and 10-year-old Alazer, a boy Sarah met on her first trip to Ethiopia two years ago. “He is just one of those people I instantly connected with,” she says. Alazer has three siblings and both of his parents are blind. “This family is so poor. Their old house was right next to an open sewer. Its mud floor was low lying so during the monsoon it would just flood,” Sarah says. When the Deanes learned that the government was giving Alazer’s family a small piece of land for a new house, they saw an opportunity to help further. “It is the house that my boys helped build during our time there,” Sarah says. Local people taught them how to build a concrete floor, then how to plaster the eucalyptus structure with mud and straw. Deane says her boys coped well. “They enjoyed being able to do things and volunteered to labour most afternoons. Sport was another great thing. It helped with the culture shock they experienced and broke through barriers,”

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 21

March 21 2014 she says. “There was a lot of soccer and touch rugby. Cricket was big, and once Will performed the Haka in a school lesson the kids kept asking him to do it over and over again,” Deane says. “When you are with children, it is very fun, and we were very fortunate to work with a project where there is hope and the boys could see that. I told them before we went that the way I cope is by trying to focus hard on what we are doing,” she says. Alazer has become an important part of the family. “I think about him every day and we talk about him often as a family and feel that there is a lot of hope for him. Both of his parents are smart and educated. They can read Braille and speak English. We ask the Blind Institute to translate our letters before we send them. If you can change one person’s life, you often change the lives of the entire family,” Deane says. While in Ethiopia, they also met Jerry, a young woman who was once a sponsored child. “She is incredible. She went to university and has a family. She works for a division of the UN on contract. She and six of her sponsoredchild friends have found homes for 200 street children over the last seven years. “She is giving back to her community. It’s not about us doing it all but about empowering the local people so much that they can take over and be independent,” Deane says. Last December, they also decided to support a school. “We offered to raise money for toilets because we thought they really need toilets at the school. The local people really appreciated our offer but told us their dream was to have three new classrooms to teach children technical skills and trades from an early age. They said it would be a huge help to children who won’t go on to university,” she says. The Deanes came, saw and listened. “One room will be for hairdressing, and sewing, one for welding, mechanics and building, and one will have a library and IT facilities,” she says. A basic version will cost around $20,000, says Deane, adding that if they can raise more, the extra money could pay for upgrades, such as plastered walls and equipment. On their last trip, the Deanes took with them 13 suitcases full of donated equipment that included 200 North Shore United Soccer Club shirts, soccer and touch rugby balls, cricket sets, and many other resources not available in Ethiopia. Talking about her humanitarian work is new for Sarah. “This is quite big for me. I am not a public person at all. I usually just potter away quietly, like many families that help out with the PTA, at the cricket club or in other ways,” she says. But the first-hand experience in Ethiopia has changed her and the rest of her family. Bailey retires from civil defence after 20 years but will still volunteer After 20 years with Auckland Civil Defence Wendy Bailey retired last week from her role as Auckland Council Emergency Management Advisor. “I have been lucky to spend time doing something I believe in,” she told the Flagstaff. Bailey remembers starting out as a civil defence volunteer when her now 35-year-old son Sam was a toddler. She became Welfare Manager for North Shore City Council in 1995. Three years ago she transferred to Auckland Council. In all her civil defence jobs, Bailey has managed Devonport’s readiness to get through a disaster. Most recently, she has been guiding the Devonport Emergency Response Group through the process of writing its own local disaster response plan. That plan is regularly updated with new information learned, such as after the Vauxhall tornado six months ago and the tsunami alert following the Chilean earthquake on Waitangi Day two

years ago. Devonport’s community spirit will be critical in any kind of disaster. “It’s about linkages to friends, neighbours, organisations, knowing what to do but also who’s vulnerable and might need a helping hand,” Bailey says. However, individual preparedness is key, she says. “Personally, I accept that I have a responsibility to do my best to take care of myself and my family and if the rest of the community has a similar attitude, we will all benefit.” Bailey said she will remain involved as a volunteer with civil defence, but she also wants to change her life. “More walking, tramping and exploring in New Zealand, Europe and the UK. More exercise, learning and singing. More input into Devonport and the Community House. And I’d like to return to Tiri Tiri Maitangi as a volunteer guide. “I should say less wine but that Personal responsiblity the key to civil defence… Wendy Bailey could be a bit radical,” she says.

Join the dots to see loss of public assets Ron Dykman’s letter (Flagstaff, 7-314) will have touched a raw nerve for some. Why are you outraged or surprised? What is there about capitalism you don’t understand? The agenda of privatisation and globalisation is plunder. Nothing must remain in public ownership – except debt.

Monetarise everything along a business model – the citizens exist simply to be production units or consumers or stuff. There used to be publicly elected and responsive harbour boards, power boards, trade unions, borough councils, now almost gone. If one joins the dots, starting with Tel-

ecom, Tranz Rail, trust banks, cooperative bodies, ports and airports, a clear picture emerges – Auckland harbour and Bayswater marina are just a couple of dots. Meanwhile it’s on to the next deal – oops election. And yes, this is a political statement. Richard Fenn

The half-hourly bus that stops at the ferry building meets the half-hourly ferry from Auckland, and conveys passengers to various destinations between here and Takapuna. There are bus stops in the village, where there is plenty of shelter, so I have to wonder whether people shopping in Devonport would bother to walk down to the ferry bus stop carrying their shopping. THe navy CoMMuniTy newsleTTer Te Mana reTurns Devonport was rocked last week by the sounds from saluting guns as HMNZS TE MANA returned after a seven-month deployment after being part of two international maritime military organisations in the Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin. The crew of 182 on board TE MANA have conducted counter-piracy operations for the Combined Maritime Forces Combined Task Force 151 (CTF151) and NATO Operation Ocean Shield. During its two-month operational deployment in the area, TE MANA completed sixty-two maritime situational awareness visits, while patrolling and conducting maritime engagement with merchant traders and fisherman at sea. TE MANA’s Commanding Officer, Commander Shane Arndell, is proud of the work his crew have done on the world stage. “Sending HMNZS TE MANA halfway around the world is part of a global effort

and shows New Zealand as an international citizen, playing our part. Through the presence of warships in the area the acts of piracy have dropped over the last few years and we are proud to be part of that.” Before joining CTF 151, TE MANA took part in an intensive training period with elements of the Australian Defence Force and took part in the International Fleet Review in Sydney before arriving off the coast of Somalia to conduct conter-piracy operations in late November.

Devonport should become an independent state of New Zealand As Ashleigh Gallagher points out, we have much to celebrate in Devonport and it’s worth fighting to preserve our small corner. And what we need to realise is that if we are not vigilant, this place can be spoilt unnecessarily, pieces at a time. Our local MP Maggie Barry focuses on how many boards would be best served by members, whilst others are partying on newly titled land sticking it to us. She’s not here working for our community in my view. Chris Darby’s clearly well informed on the Bayswater title giveaway. I demand he and Maggie Barry call for a retraction of the stolen harbour bed. It’s as big a joke as some of the Maori title confiscations of the last century. It’s the same corrupt theft. This week I watch on, as contractors appear to be playing mind games at the library. The digger sits there for a week, conditioning your mind to the outrage. Darby and others are behind it; there is an eerie silence. National outrages last week have been

as bizarre as our local issues. It’s a strange relationship giving out citizenship to rich foreigners who give donations to Maggie’s party. It hardly hits the NZ Herald about Bayswater; a man who will gladly sell to the likes of those not even New Zealand citizens taking our harbour for his personal gain, given by government. This week I watched Auckland Transport give out free coffee locally at Corelli’s to bikers and walkers. When I asked him who was managing the motorway on-ramp lights and Lake Road he had no idea. He said that it was not his role to know anything except that about biking. It struck me then that I’d like to create an independent state of Devonport. We could fence off this place perhaps at the corner of Lake and Esmonde Roads. I’d depart Maggie Barry to Wellington and stick it to those who make fun of us every week by insulting our intelligence time and time again. Ron Dykman (abridged, Editor)

Changes to ferry car parking to allow for the upgrade to Marine Square has led to snarl ups with some motorists parking illegally and boxing others in. The Flagstaff observed a driver trying unsucessfully to get her car out of parking space

on Friday. The woman was off to a job appointment but luckily had access to her daughter’s car. “There does not seem to be any policing of it (the changed parking) It makes me cranky,” she said.

Dragon Seat on move again The popular mosaic Dragon Seat, designed by Karen Kennedy, will be moved again in a redesign of Chinaman’s Hill near New World. It will be reolcated, slightly further up the hill. The seat was moved from Ngataringa Park late in 2009, after repeated vandalism of it became an issue. The steep path between New World and

Victoria Rd will soon take on an S shape. After the upper retaining wall along the wall partially gave way last year, Auckland Transport moved the path temporarily sideways and has now come up with a permanent design. The two wooden park benches currently at the bottom and top of the terrace will be removed.

Dumped on The delivery of a truckload full of sand for a sandpit on Cassino St resulted in the uprooting of a neighbour’s power pole recently. The Atlas Concrete truck accidentally got caught on the telephone wires hanging across the

driveway when tipping out the sand. The pressure snapped a telephone wire and pulled over a power pole two houses down. Vector arrived within an hour to repair the damage.

Held this year at Devonport Community Garden at Cambria Reserve Sat 12th April 1-4pm. Check out the competition info on our website.

Obstacles all part of the challenge for local Ironman Overcoming obstacles is at the heart of any endurance sport and Arien Hielkema, currently ranked 5th in Ironman for his age group, knows all about that. Three years ago the 27-year-old Cheltenham resident and lecturer in 3D animation weighed nearly 100 kg and was constantly tired. He visited a nutritionist, lost 25 kg and found he had “boundless energy to spare.” Hielkema decided to use that energy to train for Ironman New Zealand, aiming to qualify for the ITU age group world triathlon champs in London last year. But a week before the qualifying race he was hit by a car during a training bike ride, which partially dislocated his shoulder, broke his elbow and wrist and ruptured a ligament in his knee. “It took me six months to get back to training, but within another six I was on the start line ready to compete in my first Ironman,” Hielkema says. Then, while setting up, his bike valve blew. “No biggie,” he thought and changed it. After an hour-long swim leg, Hielkema jumped on his bike noticing the tyre had a bulge. “I tried to fix it but my fingers were cold and it took six minutes to get that one sorted,” he says. After completing the five-and-a-half hour bike ride, Hielkema didn’t eat and drink enough at the refuelling station. “For the third time I met my demons in my head. I became determined to get my run right,” he said. After less than four hours on the road Hielkema came 14th in his age group, with an overall time of 10:34. Added to the result from a Half-Ironman

Strong bonds… Nicole Hielkema lets nothing get between her and her Ironman Arien Hielkema completed in January, this currently makes him the fifth-ranked Ironman in his age group in New Zealand. “I thought I had a bad day but listening to some of the stories I have decided that all the things that go wrong are part of the race. It is

Violinist David Choi returns for the first Devonport Chamber Orchestra (DCO) concert of the year on March 23 at 2pm in Harmony Hall to play Bach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor and Monti’s ever-popular Czardas. Three years ago Choi gave a stunning performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Now a qualified doctor, Choi performs when his work schedule permits. Last June he was soloist in the Sibelius violin concerto with the NZ Doctors’ Orchestra in a concert in Nelson to raise money for the Nelson Hospice. Also on the programme on March 23, the DCO will perform a symphony written by Frederick the Great. The kingly theme of the concert continues in the final work on the programme, Canzona for String Orchestra, written by Devonport composer and violinist, Alexander Cowdell. He said: “In Star turn…Choi returns to Devonport August 2008, I was part of a group of musicians who performed at the coronation concert celebrations of the coronation. It takes as in Tonga of the [now late] King George its basis the Bach chorale Sei Lob und Ehr Tupou V. I was asked if I would write a dem Hochsten Gut (Honour and Praise to piece for the occasion, dedicated to the the Highest) and develops and elaborates king. My concept for the canzona was that elements contained within it.” it would provide a few moments of peace- • Admission is $10, and free for children ful reflection in the midst of the joyful under 12.

Wilde times at the Rose Centre The wit and warmth of Oscar Wilde will sparkle at the Rose Centre for the Company Theatre’s first show of 2013. Steven Arnold will direct Wilde’s classic Victorian drama An Ideal Husband at the Rose Centre from March 29 to April 12. After The Importance of Being Earnest, it is Wilde’s second most popular play. An Ideal Husband poses questions around political power. What drives politicians to make the decisions they do? What happens when politicians fall from grace? Are they ever to be forgiven? Wilde says that sooner or later “we shall all have to pay for what we do”. There are many current examples in New Zealand of politicians who lead a public life and become responsible to media-driven public curiosity. What has changed – if anything – since late Victorian times? It is Arnold’s first production for Company Theatre and features outstanding period costumes designed and sewn by the talented Cathie Sandy. The modern set design is by Steven Arnold and Anne Rimmer, with a dramatic flooring effect by Caroline Parker. Lighting Design is by Sam Mence. • Performances at The Rose Centre are from 29 March – 12 April, at 8pm, Wednesday to Saturday, with two matinees on Sunday 30th March and Sunday 6th April, at 2.00pm. Prices $25 and $20. Bookings are essential as some nights are booked out. See the website – www.rosecentre.co.nz – for booking information or phone the Rose Centre on 445 9900.

Going LCOMEbananas E W S AGE at the community garden

Devonport could become a banana republic if Ngataringa Community Garden has its way. Garden volunteers are aiming to make it cheap and easy for residents to grow their own banana trees. The garden is offering up young banana pup plants for a $10 donation or half an hour of helping in the garden. Next year, you can pass one of your tree’s pups on to a friend or neighbours. Bananas have been grown at the community garden for years, and it has a small banana forest. Volunteers are happy to pass on their advice on making the trees thrive. David Noon, who volunteers at the garden every Wednesday, says: “Each plant has one crop of bananas and then dies off, leaving five to six pups in its place. Those you can dig out and plant somewhere else. The old banana plants we cut up into mulch which we spread on the ground.” Noon says he planted a banana tree at his Clarence Street home two years ago and has been watching his first crop grow this summer. The garden is open on Wednesdays and Sundays from 10 am – 2 pm.

Jack was back!

A champion runner The “Ripper” was resurrected in the Drama department two weeks ago following two days’ worth of the eccentric portrayal of the infamous UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico. Students flocked to the nicely airconditioned performance space in the Georgea Tindall building and for a small fee of $2 were entertained by these wellwritten and thrilling performances. These performances were a fantastic opportunity for the Year 12 students Jake MacKenzie, Bethan Kingaby, Andy Song (‘The Ripper’), Jack Henderson, Liam Cairns, Pip Charlett-Green

(‘Roswell: Beginnings’), Adam Pomeroy and Phoebe Johnson (‘Roswell: Endings’) – to reawaken their devised ‘historical’ pieces performed late last year for the Year 11 drama course. Students Adam Pomeroy and Jake MacKenzie were even miraculously cloned by a piece of alien technology allowing them to partake in two of the lunchtime performances. Head of Performing Arts, Mr DeGrut, has confirmed that many more stunning performances are planned in the weeks to come. By PhoeBe Johnson

Getting up at 6 a.m. every morning for a run is a regular event, at least for Julia Giurgiu. 14-year-old Julia is already a national champion. In January, Julia competed in the North Island Colgate Games, winning gold medals in both her races, the 800m and 1500m. This followed her win at the John Walker Night of Miles in December where she ran the mile and won another gold medal. She also competed in the Under-16, 800m and placed 4th. Julia often trains twice a day, with a run in the mornings and two-hour training sessions at Takapuna Athletics Club with the club’s coach. She has several competitions coming up, including North Harbour, Auckland and North Island Secondary School competitions, Interprovincials and Auckland Championships. By saBina GiurGiu

Sailing in home waters Sailing is alive and well here at school, with the help and support of our local club – Wakatere Boating Club. The annual Auckland Secondary Schools’ regatta was held at Narrow Neck beach for the 64th year. It is run by the club members so is an awesome opportunity for all our sailors to perform on home waters. With 13 students involved across five boat categories, we were pushing for the overall schools’ Points Cup. Unfortunately due to an injury, our top-ranked 29er crew of Marcus Somerville and Tim Adair could not race but the other students performed well to place TGS 4th in the school points. Our top performers over the two-day regatta were Jono Weston, who placed 2nd in the Optimists (27 entries), and Airi Kawana, who won the P-Class. Following this two-day regatta, four of our sailors went on to represent the school at the invitation only, prestigious RNZYS Harken Regatta on March 8 and 9. Racing in Elliot 7s, the team, consisting of Aidan Nicholas, Chris Coleman, Jono Weston and Airi Kawana, performed well on day 2 placing them 11th in the fleet overall. Coached by Jono Spurdle and managed by Terry Nicholas, the boys had a wonderful opportunity to be exposed to the larger boats and the team work required for this regatta. By sharon Davies, sPorts Director.

Rowing at National Club level A silver medal in the Women’s Novice double skulls at the National Club Championships for rowing, was the reward for many hard months of training for TGS rowers Breanna De Gouw and Liberty Soanes. After placing first in their heat, with a twenty second lead, they progressed to the A final with the third-fastest time. The water was calm for finals day on Friday the 21st of February and after a close race the girls placed second with a personal best

time of 7:51. The results are extremely impressive for first-year rowers Breanna and Liberty, who were considerably younger than their competitors who came from all around New Zealand. The crew was entered into this national level regatta by Director of Rowing, Mike Hill. They are coached by Matt Korn. “It was an amazing experience and it was so great to see our hard training pay off,” said Breanna. By hannah Patterson

Neighbourhood watches out for Tom’s dinghy

Tom Logan’s search for his stolen rubber dinghy has had the unexpected spin-off of neighbourhood support. The dinghy was stolen on Sunday 2 March from his front lawn. Logan called the police and put out a sign, appealing directly to the thief to return the stolen goods. The sign is proving valuable already – even if the boat is still missing – as passersby are offering help. “A big Navy guy with his dog came past and said he would keep an eye out,” says Logan who lives on Northboro Rd. Anthony Willis cycled past and stopped to say he was sorry about the theft. “I saw them load up the boat out of the corner of my eye and the next time I came past the sign was here and I realised what must have happened. Now I wish I had taken their licence plate number down,” Willis said. The police told Logan that thieves at times just drive around looking for things that are easy to take. Logan was out sailing his Idle Along dinghy off Takapuna beach the afternoon the other dinghy was stolen. “Normally it is locked in my trailer but I took it off that day,” he said. It is a white Grand Pacific, bought second hand and worth about $1,000, he said. Devonport B&B owner Lyndsay Rendall dropped past Logan’s house after seeing the sign out the front. Her blue and purple sit-on kayak was stolen on February 12 from behind a small brush fence on King Edward Parade. “I was wondering whether it might have ended up in the same place,” she said.

North Shore Cricket celebrates 150 years

Cricket at Cheltenham Flats…1903 The North Shore Cricket Club (NSCC) was established in 1864, primarily by military and civil officers who brought the love of game with them from England. The first club captain was Captain G. Wynyard of the 68th Regiment. The first recorded inter-club game was in 1867 against a city club called Blackstones, which was made up of lawyers and law clerks. A return game was played at Auckland Domain the following year with the North Shore players travelling across the harbour in rowing boats. Unfortunately, it rained and a North Shore team had to row home again, the game abandoned. It was not until 1870 that another inter-club game was played, as the owner of the land where the club’s pitch was laid wanted it for hay. Forced to move, the club laid a new pitch on the Cheltenham Flats, a popular sporting area just to the east of where Tainui Road is today, behind sandhills, which then skirted

124-year-old debt?

Cheltenham beach. Matches were played here every Saturday during the summer months. The pitch was watered from a well dug about 500 metres away. Local boys were employed at the rate of a penny a bucket to carry the water. During the 1880s the land was being sold for private housing and the club went into a period of inactivity. In 1890, the newly formed Devonport Borough Council met with the club and agreed that a pitch would be laid on a reclaimed mangrove swamp nestled between three extinct volcanoes, if the club matched its commitment to apply £50 to the project. The minutes of the meeting record several conditions. One was that the club would have “just claim on the ground for 100 years and that no other games which will damage the ground be played thereon.” Apart from ensuring that the public would have free access, no heavy stock were to be grazed on the prepared ground for at least 100 years. In the end two pitches were laid, both of which are still in use today and

are stand-alone (they do not have winter sport played over them). The ground was for many years known simply as “the cricket ground” but was named the Devonport Domain sometime later. It wasn’t long before two more grass wickets were laid. One of the club’s more colourful stories was centred around a roller. Club members in 1879 needed a new roller and, having seen one parked in Albert Park in the city, decided to “borrow” it. The club members who obtained the roller found rolling it down the hill from Albert Park to the Devonport ferry was not a problem, but getting it onto the ferry was. It is said that the ferry listed severely to starboard all the way across the Waitemata Harbour to Devonport. However, the roller eventually resided for many years at Devonport Domain, providing good service to the club. The current clubrooms, which were built in 1966, are the second to be built on the Domain.

North Shore Cricket Club thinks it may owe council around £43 - a debt from 124 years ago. In 1890 Devonport Borough Council agreed to lay two pitches if the club agreed to pay £50. But club records show £6 and 18 shillings were put towards the fields and according to the club’s manager the club may still owe the balance. Devonport Domain was the third and final location for the club. From 1864 till around 1870 NSCC (or Devonport Cricket as it was then known) played on a piece of land between Albert Rd and where the golf course now sits. (Possibly where the playground is, on the corner of Derby St and Allenby Ave). Then from about 1870 the team played at ‘Cheltenham Flats’. The exact location is unknown but likely to be where Oxford Tce North Shore Cricket clubrooms 1905 is now.

CC Dacre remembered in clubhouse name

One of North Shore’s most famous players is C.C. (Ces) Dacre – the first New Zealander to hit a century at Lord’s - the home of English Ccricket. He hit the century in 1927 and the club has the very bat - signed by members of both teams - on display in its trophy cabinet. Dacre was a cricketing prodigy. He played for Auckland at the age of 15, and was believed to be New Zealand’s youngest ever first-class cricketer. Legend has it that when he turned up to play he had trouble getting into the team changing room, as groundsmen assumed he was a schoolboy spectator. Dacre is believed to be the only cricketer to hit the ball into the Waitemata Harbour from the number one wicket on Devonport Domain. In 2002 the North Shore Cricket clubrooms were renamed the C.C. Dacre Pavilion. The reopening was attended by Dacre’s son Paul and cousin John Dacre. The Dacre family tradition continues in Devonport. Dacre’s great-great--nephew Donald Coleman is a promising cricketer and rugby player for North Shore and Takapuna Grammar. • North Shore has had 18 players who represented New Zealand. The most notable included Dacre, Jack Cowie, Barry Sinclair, Hedley Howarth, Martin Snedden, Danny Morrison and Richard Reid. North Shore’s golden girls top of Auckland The North Shore Cricket Club’s (NSCC) under-12 girls’ A team is undefeated in the Auckland-wide U12 A grade this season, and the U12 B team unbeaten until it sustained a loss in the 12th round. The cricket club’s U12 Rep team, consisting of players from U12 A and B, has beaten Cornwall and Parnell in fixtures so far this summer. The team will play Cornwall in its next game – set down for the morning of March 23 at Stanley Bay Park as part of the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations. In the A-team competition, Sam Petherick, Emily Handyside and Rosie McGregor are in the top ten bowlers. Sam and Emily are also in the top ten batters and Sam is at the top of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) leader board and Emily in second place. The team has scored more than 1100 runs. Leading the batting in the B grade is Libby Easterbrook with Anna Browning in second place. Kennedy Scott leads the grade for bowlers with 17 wickets, with Anna second on 16. The grade’s first three positions on the MVP leader board are held by Anna, Libby and Kennedy.

Another maiden century for Takapuna Grammar In his first year playing for Takapuna Grammar’s 1st XI, and his first two-day game, year 11 student Mitchell Bremner scored a maiden century against Westlake Boys’ High School 2nd XI. His 126 runs came off just 144 deliveries (81 off the last 70 balls), and included 17 fours. His innings lasted through five partnerships and 46 overs. Bremner’s century is the second for the school in three weeks, and the third of the summer, another milestone for a resurgent 1st XI, now playing in the 1B Championship 2-day round and aiming to win promotion back to the 1A competition.
