Events like the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon or the Navy’s Open Day should no longer be held in Devonport unless event organisers can alleviate traffic congestion, says Auckland Councillor Chris Darby. In the last month, both the Weet-Bix Kids

TRYathlon (April 6) and the Navy Open Day (March 29) clogged up Lake Rd, Victoria Rd and side streets feeding into them for hours. At times, cars were backed up as far down the peninsula as the Devonport ferry building. The Weet-Bix event experienced record numbers for

the second year in a row, with 2,300 children aged 7 to 15 taking part. Public transport came to a standstill as well, with buses temporarily out of service as they could not get out into the traffic, the Flagstaff has learned. To page 9

Royal help from Devonport Wakatere sailor Kate Stewart has the golden touch – she was part of the crew that helped Catherine The Duchess of Cambridge win two races against her husband Prince William last Friday. Kate was one of six Auckland youth sailors invited to take part in the racing on two America’s Cup boats. It was another memorable occasion in a big year for Kate. She won the prestigious Tauranga Cup last January and heads to Travemuende, Germany, to compete in the 420 World Championships in July. Kate (15) but had no idea how personable

the event was going to be. Not only did she help sail the Duchess’s boat, she also had a chat and her photo taken with the princess. Kate was modest about the amount of help she provided with the sailing. “I wasn’t much help on the boat. I was grinding. After the races, she [Catherine] came up to us and we talked about sailing and things. She said that if she could ever pick a sport to compete in the Olympics in, it would be sailing,” Kate says. “It was really cool to be invited and such an honour to meet her. She was really lovely.”

Paint bond – Rowan the Man with the Golden Gun

Top gun… Rowan Cumiskey’s apparent casualness masks his mastery with a paint gun Rowan Cumiskey is New Zealand’s best apprentice car painter. Cumiskey (20) has been working at Fleet Street Panelbeaters for three years. He has won the national Golden Gun Award, which was presented in Wellington last Saturday. Cumiskey hopes to qualify for the World Skills Competition held in Brazil next year,

which his boss Nathan Hale says are the Olympics of the automotive trade. Cumiskey is the son of Wendy and Andre Cumiskey, the owners of Devonport Auto Centre, which is next door to the panel beating shop. His older brother Hayden works at the family firm as a mechanic. In his acceptance speech, Cumiskey said he did not earn the reward had “been surrounded by cars my whole life or was born to paint cars.” But he had also applied himself and had the right attitude. He gave credit to his mentor, foreman Garreth Tomkinson. “To get good at something, you learn from the best,” he said, comparing Tomkinson’s skills to those of Tiger Woods and David Beckham.

Dad Andre said: “I am really proud of him and what he achieved for his age, for sticking at it and for how far it has taken him.” Hale added: “He’s worked really good.” The Golden Gun is awarded annually by the Collision Repair Association and comprises a certificate, $1,000 and a new spray gun. Cumiskey was also offered a scholarship by the Motor Industry Training Organisation for further technical training or a management course. “I’m definitely taking that up,” Rowan says. It is the second major award Cumiskey has won in the last two years. In 2012 he was named the State Insurance Apprentice of the Year in vehicle finishing.

Boy zone – the lads go it alone at Belmont Primary

Responding well to all-male zone… Peter Thorne and his boys-only class An innovative boys-only class has been set up at Belmont Primary School. With the idea bubbling away for two years, it has come to fruition in 2014 with 20 boys put into a combined Year Three and Four class. Principal Bruce Cunningham said the boys-only class offers advantages to the students. “Benefits include programmes made for boys, resources just for boys and more engagement,” he says. Shared activities are key, according to teacher Peter Thorne. Last week, he took the boys to go indoor trampolining. Earlier

in the year, they went to Whenuapai Airport to look at planes and the grounds. “It gives the boys shared experiences that they can later learn from further in the classroom. It means that all of the boys have the same experience and a good knowledge to share. They all become engaged and there are no passengers in class,” Thorne says. Classroom furniture has also been rearranged for the boys. There is a sofa in the corner, casual chairs and a soft bench in front of the whiteboard. High benches with stools have replaced traditional desks and chairs. “The boys can sit or stand. It is more flexible and gives them options to find out

what works best for them, which helps them become more self-aware,” Thorne says. “The idea is that with all of this the boys will achieve a higher standard of work as well,” he says. Thorne hopes the results of the mid-year formal academic testing will prove the approach is working. So far the anecdotal results are encouraging, he says. “I am loving it. The feedback from the parents is positive. The boys are keen to come to school, which can at times be half the battle,” Thorne says. Cunningham says: “The idea is that hopefully the boys will use these new skills in future classes.”

Financial Q & A Q: If I had $200,000 to invest, which is the best way to invest it? A: This depends on your circumstances and what you are trying to achieve.

After the furore surrounding the lack of local knowledge at the Devonport i-SITE which Auckland Toursim Events and Economic Development (ATEED) has pledged to straighten out, a local spotted this sign outside the i-SITE last week, where not one Devonport attraction or service is promoted.

Aggravated robberies in Devonport Armed police with dogs went in search offenders who had committed an aggravated robbery at St Paul’s cemetery last Sunday night, witnesses said. When police arrived, they found four people inside a stolen vehicle. The occupants told police the driver of the car had fled and was armed with a firearm and a knife. A second aggravated robbery was reported at about 11.45pm. Police were told a person had been assaulted with a weapon in nearby Clarence St, Devonport, and the offender had stolen his car. After a further robbery in Glenfield, the car crashed in Central Auckland after a police pursuit. None of the robbery victims was believed to be have been seriously injured.

Bayswater leading solar school in Auckland Bayswater School can lay claim to being the sunniest school in Auckland – next summer it should be able to sell power back to the grid. The school now has six photovoltaic panels on its roof. It previously had two panels but then got another four as a prize from Genesis Energy when it was awarded a Schoolgen Bronze Award. Bayswater School is the only school in Auckland, and one of two schools in New Zealand to win the award. A lot of hard work by the students has been put in by the students to win the award, says school principal Lindsay Child. Last year, they monitored solar output with data from the weather station, looked at how much electricity the school generated from the two photovoltaic panels it then owned and compared it with how much electricity the school used, Child says. “They noticed patterns and energy spikes and then looked at what they did during them and how they can be minimised,” she says. Initiatives like these help to slowly make the Bayswater peninsula an environmentally conscious community, Child says. “Our kids monitor the heat in the classrooms to make sure we have the optimum temperature for learning. As a result, they are aware of whether the heating and lights have been left on or the windows open.” Every Friday the school gives an award to the most energy-efficient classroom. It also

Sunny side up… Bayswater School pupils (from left to right) Luka Kelly, Cayleigh Boocock, Ben Drummond and Iona Clark showcase the school’s new photovoltaic panels, with principal Lindsay Child incorporates environmental angles in the curriculum “where it makes sense,” Child says. “We hear from our parents that the children are very aware of how to save energy and their awareness and habits are often spreading across the whole family,” she says. The Genesis Energy award is one of many

jewels in the school’s environmental crown. Bayswater School became a Green-Gold Enviroschool in 2010, has a strong history in council’s Travelwise and Waicare programmes, has won annual awards at Trash to Fashion shows, promotes beach clean-ups and has featured in Genesis Energy ads on TV.

Car is still king for peninsula residents

The number of cars per household on the Devonport peninsula has increased significantily. 2013 census figures show households with two vechicles are up 10.8% since 2001 and those with three or more vehicles are up 29.5 % since 2001. The number of households with no vehicle has declined by 41.1 % since 2001 and 20.7% since 2006. Travelling solo in a private or company vehicle is still the most popular means of getting to work for Devonport peninsula residents. Census data on the employed resident population in 2013 shows that exactly half of the area’s journeys to work are made as the driver of a private or a company car, truck or van. The number From page 1

of people driving solo to work remains exactly the same as 2001 at 5,706, yet the proportion it makes up of all commuting methods has declined from 53.3%, because of the increase in both the local population and the number of journeys to work. The figures for the Auckland region as a whole are significantly higher at 64.8%, where the volume has increased by 21.2% since the 2001 Census. The 2013 Census data also shows fewer Devonport peninsula commuters as being a passenger in a private vehicle (2.1%) or a public bus (4.6%), compared to the Auckland region as a whole. The number of locals travelling to work as a passenger has dropped by nearly a

Addressing the Lake Rd events nightmare

Darby said it wasn’t the end of events like Weet-Bix in Devonport “far from it” but “we just can’t continue doing it like this.” He said traffic management plans need to mirror those put in place at last year’s The Block NZ Open Homes, which were “likely to be the very first comprehensive travel plan for a mediumsized event and demonstrably reduced traffic,” Darby said. “The plan entailed incentives to take public transport (promoting Devonport and Bayswater ferry and Busway connections, and free and more frequent bus services), promoted walking and cycling routes and provision of 100 cycle racks. Disincentives included an 800m no-parking cordon and discouraging off-street parking arrangements,” he says. Plans needed to deal with the total impact

posed by traffic coming or leaving an event, not just traffic management around the event location, Darby said. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen said canning events in Devonport would not solve traffic problems for locals. Local people themselves would want to attend the event were it held somewhere else and they would clog the roads all the same,” he said. But events had to work better for locals who “generously shared their suburb” he said. “I am also interested in exploring in how else we could turn this around,” Cohen said. An Auckland Tranport spokesman said the Navy did not need a traffic management plan because the event was not on public roads and that Weet-Bix did and it was complied with.

third since 2006. Devonport peninsula residents appear to be cycling to work in growing, albeit small numbers, with travel by bike making up 2.8% of commutes, compared to 1% of Aucklanders as a whole. Locals are also working from home in growing numbers, up by more than 6% since 2006 and 20% since 2001. The proportion of “Other” methods of travel to work stands at 12% for the Devonport peninsula compared to 1.3% for Auckland as a whole. Ferries were not specificied but would explain the Devonport data. The volume of commuters in that “Other” category has increased by more than 36% since the 2006 Census.

Trying to get through traffic Flagstaff reporter Maire Vieth’s experience was typcial of many others trying to get around when events are on. “This Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Sunday our family was on the way from home on Victoria Rd to a kids birthday party in the city by car. Conscious of the kids event, we left the house before 1 pm but made the fatal mistake to nip to the bookshop for a gift. Ten minutes later, heading out, we stalled at Calliope Rd. Traffic was at a near standstill and it took us over 15 minutes to the next intersection, Hastings Pde. Enough time to ditch the party and head for lunch to Vauxhall Rd, where traffic backed up southward until we were ready to go home, on foot, overtaking all the cars on Albert Rd. Around 5pm it seemed safe to retrieve the car again.”

Respectful ranting pets to foul my patio furniture... The thing is though, it’s all about respect, isn’t it? Or lack thereof. Take a look at yourselves, fellow Devonport people – we live in a community that we love and are proud of. We just need to remind ourselves that we are all sharing the same space - respect each other by behaving appropriately: pick up after your dog, don’t break the road rules, and have a bit of respect. Oh yeah, and less of the ranting! Maybe we all need to go back to kindergarten and learn some basics! Not sure what to do about the cats, though… Judith Clumpas, Church St

I was going to write in and rant that I started the kindy sponsored walk all those years ago partly as a reaction to a move at the time to turn Mt Cambria into a “memorial garden” with no access for community play, and go on to explain that I don’t expect those children to exercise with a rope around their neck, any more than I expect my dog to. (Dogs don’t have to be on a leash in Mt Cambria – just check the sign)! I could continue my rant to say that even as an occasional cyclist I don’t appreciate almost being mown down by one on the zebra crossing in Victoria Rd last week… and don’t even get me started on the mystery cat owners who are blissfully unaware that they allow their

Public Call to Maggie Barry The Bayswater Marina fiasco. As our MP we instruct you Maggie, to find out and tell us; 1. Who legislated to allow freehold titles to be given on reclaimed harbour beds? And who lobbied for it? 2. Was it necessary? 3. How is it Council are now given the right to determine the activities permitted thereaf-

ter? Who designed that twist of legislation? 4. Why were these things done in secret? 5. Who asked for the vote for this kind of thing, other than the owner/developer of Bayswater marina? What backroom deals were done? 6. When are you going to retract this situation and order this matter be consulted properly? Ron Dykman

Sick of the mess on Mt Cambria

I live on Church Street, my young children recreate in Mt Cambria reserve and on a daily basis I encounter dog poo on the footpath, on the road or in the park. I now leave a shovel by my front door to scoop away the poo on the footpath so that my children can take their bikes to the reserve without having to step on poo. Daily I pick up dog poo from my front yard (and I don’t even own a dog)! Dog owners need to understand just how

bad it has become for people on Church Street and for those that use the reserve. I love dogs as much as the next person. However if dog owners cannot manage their dogs accordingly, we will be approaching council to ban dogs from Mt Cambria Reserve. It is not other peoples’ responsibility to clean up YOUR dog’s poo. Please be more respectful that others use the footpath, the reserve and prefer that their private property is unsoiled. Priscilla Steele

Car parking solutions

Auckland Council may consider that a reduction of temporary long-term car parking opposite the ferry building is an advantage to open up this area for pedestrians, but clearly many Devonport motorists will view this decision with dismay and anger. Drivers will be faced with the fact that there are less overall car parking spaces, despite the fact that Auckland Council has a clear intention to promote the use of public transport, both bus and ferry. Perhaps, with the ferry and the continued frustration of finding suitable park-

Chance to see vista lost Yes, the library, which held a lot of meaning to members of our community, had to go, but I was saddened to see it being smashed to pieces rather than removed with a little more grace. It is a pity that the contractor has chosen, or been instructed, to install a solid hoarding to one side of the building site, so that the vistas through the trees and the true value of this open space to our community cannot be fully appreciated. We can, at least for a short period of time, consider what could be our front lawn without a large object on it. Bruce Macfarlane

ing, my view is, with less parking it will have the opposite effect; ie more motorists will have no choice but to use the bridge. My solution to solve this obvious disadvantage… would be to rededicate the present (parallel) car parking from opposite Garden Terrace (south side) westwards to Spring St. Included in my suggestion is to remove parallel parking and replace it with angle parking. In theory the space taken by two cars, parked kerbside should provide angle parking for three vehicles; ie 33% increase overall - replacing the loss of the Marine Square decision. I have not measured out this option in metres. However I calculate, ‘stepping it out’, that by using the width of this centre path, plus the present width of parked cards is more or less the same distance of a parallel parked car. A further advantage is the speed and ease of parking on an angle, and better utilisation of the road’s present width, from kerbside/northwards. Presently, selfish drivers park too close to another car, creating frustration, and difficulty for others later. Plus at present, the gap between cars is wasted, which does not apply to angle parking. John Hipkins (Abridged, Editor)

Devonport dancer with all the right moves

Balanced… East meets West for Devonport dancer Patrick Suenderhauf

Patrick Suenderhauf was a professional ballet dancer in Europe before finding his spiritual self in New Zealand. Now teaching in Devonport he spoke to Maire Vieth about growing up in East Germany, free running and horsing around with his daughter.

Not withstanding his impressive career as a professional ballet dancer, Patrick Suenderhauf says he has never been in better shape than now at the age of 43. “My body is finally balanced and evened out. It’s because I do a lot of pull-ups, go free running, and climb

www.scapetech.co.nz scapetech@clear.net.nz

walls, fences, and trees, a bit like a kid. I try to replicate the bush in Devonport,” he says. Suenderhauf brings these movements into his dance studio at Victoria Hall. “Contemporary Dance is a melting pot of techniques. It is an offshoot of ballet but with an open lid. I bring aspects of hip hop footwork, free running steps and playing to it,” he says. Suenderhauf also teaches at the Auckland Academy of Dance in New Lynn. Over the last 11 years, he has taught at many dance schools across Auckland and New Zealand, has lectured in the dance departments at The University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology, and has collaborated with professional dance companies. He also runs a massage and kinesiology clinic from home. So far, 15 of his students have been accepted to professional dance schools in America, Australia and New Zealand. “Four senior students have won Scholarship Awards of the New Zealand Academy of Modern Dance and this year I have three that are so good they could all win,” he says. Suenderhauf lives on the ground floor of a former finishing school for girls on Calliope Road. “My lounge used to be the wash house. That’s me. I’m a socialist by nature and made for small environments. I don’t like flashy places I can’t maintain,” he says. The garden is full of basil, capsicum, kale, beets and broccoli and Suenderhauf eats from it every day. The place reminds him of his childhood.

Suenderhauf grew up in a subsidised art deco house in the Thuringian town of Greiz, in central Germany. His grandmother lived downstairs. “During the day, I was a free agent, mostly outside exploring, climbing trees like a monkey but always back for lunch and dinner,” he says. Greiz has a river, two castles and a large forest and was spared destruction during the Second World War. “It was an idyllic and peaceful setting and childhood where I was free and being looked after,” he says. Suenderhauf’s grandmother, who was part Austrian and part Czechoslovakian, descended from one of the oldest Bohemian noble families, von Lobkowicz. Franz Joseph Maximillian Lobkowicz had been a patron of Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Joseph Haydn. Suenderhauf’s parents were teachers in East Germany (GDR). His mother taught at teachers college and during the late 1980s worked with Erika Krenz, the wife of the GDR’s last president Egon Krenz. Suenderhauf’s father was high up the ladder of sports education, as the second principal of one of 23 East German boarding schools for promising young athletes. “They were the academies that produced Olympic gold medallists and world champions over many years. The system was abused but it was a great sports education where kids were trained all day by amazing teachers in the same place where they also had maths and social studies. There was doping but not

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 17

April18 2014 everyone did it and some people were really clean with amazing results,” Suenderhauf says. When he was seven, Suenderhauf started as a gymnast and excelled at floor work. “When I was ten, I still hadn’t developed enough upper body strength and was happy to leave. The teachers said I had a special talent to move.” he says. By now, Suenderhauf’s parents had separated and he moved to East Berlin to live with his mother, who enrolled him at the Ballet School of Berlin, one of the GDR’s three professional dance schools. “It was a bit like Mao’s Last Dancer,” Suenderhauf says. Two years in he was asked to board and studied the Russian Vaganova ballet technique with Martin Puttke. Puttke himself had studied under the Russian teacher Nikolai Tarassov and later translated Tarassov’s renowned book on male dancing, from Russian into German. East German pioneer in contemporary dance Gret Palucca taught at the dance school in Dresden and was another influence, Suenderhauf says. Western culture also influenced him in East Berlin. “We listened to West German radio and secretly watched James Bond on TV at boarding school. We were informed about what was going on, lived in the middle of Europe and were surrounded by culture,” Suenderhauf says. In 1987, Suenderhauf was accepted into John Neumeier’s School of the Hamburg Ballet and the State allowed him to go. He received a scholarship and boarded with the school secretary. But living in the West was a shock to the system. “I went from somewhere I absolutely belonged, to a totally different capitalist environment without any time to adjust. On my first day, I had a Moevenpick ice cream with 30 scoops and soon I felt pressure from everywhere, including my parents, to be very, very, good and to succeed, but I didn’t have the support I had before,” he says. In Hamburg, Suenderhauf attended a Catholic high school and a different dance school in the afternoons. “After three years I almost didn’t finish. I had a knee injury and lost my confidence and it was going downwards for a while. I didn’t make the cut for the Hamburg ballet company I had often danced for as a student,” he says. But when he auditioned for the ballet company of Dresden’s Semperoper (opera house), he got the job. “It was the ex-GDR. I was with my brothers and I felt looked after again, by physiotherapists and colleagues who helped me come right. Once I was painfree I blossomed again and had a great time dancing professionally for the next six years,” Suenderhauf says. In his mid-twenties, he started exploring alternative approaches to dance and learned about the Alexander Technique’s approach to healthy posture. “I was really fascinated by it and decided to leave dancing on a high and set myself up for a new stage of life,” he says. Suenderhauf went back to Hamburg and studied Heilpraktik (a state-regulated field of alternative

medicine) while working as a call centre supervisor at night. “After three years, I decided to treat myself to a trip to New Zealand if I did well,” he says. In 2001, Suenderhauf arrived in Golden Bay. “After a week in a campervan the sun came out and I just loved it,” he says. A trip to the Coromandel proved transformative. Suenderhauf said watching potters like Bryce Stevens and Petra Meyboden in Coromandel town turned his life around. For six months, he helped rebuild the Driving Creek Café near Barry Brickell’s railway and lived in the bush. “It felt like an ideal marriage of East and West Germany. People do what they love and are incredibly dedicated to their craft. They are self-employed, supportive of each other and survive doing their art. They don’t have heaps, but enough,” he says. Suenderhauf sold his belongings in Germany and returned, settling in Devonport where he set up a massage clinic at Harvest Health, the health food shop then located in today’s Caroline Sills shop. Soon, he performed in Auckland and taught dance for the first time. “I had never taught before, but maybe because both of my parents had been teachers it felt natural to me from the start. Suenderhauf likes to work with dancers from an early age. “When I work with little kids, I try to inspire them, so I am a player and explorer, but I also like to finish people off with choreographies and techniques,” he says.

He mucks in as well. “I work out with my dance students. I still put socks and sweatpants on and work out with my 16-year-olds, who are really good,” he says. Suenderhauf’s nine-year-old daughter Hebe keeps him fit too. “She grew up around dance but at the moment is into handstands, flip-overs and cartwheels. So am I. She doesn’t go to gymnastic classes but progresses to a new level of movement integration almost every day,” he says. An integrated body system and holistic approach to dance is what Suenderhauf strives for, and moving like a child is a way to get there. “I try to avoid the repetition of the gym,” he says, grabbing two bricks to demonstrate his approach to weight lifting, pushing them around slowly in three dimensions. “That’s how I train every single little muscle in my arms,” he says. Suenderhauf also moves to unwind. “I can’t relax reading a book, only physically,” he says. A new pair of roller blades arrived in the mail that day and he rollerblades outside the Devonport ferry building at night. “I do the Harlem Shuffle,” he laughs. Another hobby is windsurfing. Four different boards are stored in the garage. “I have a freestyle board, wave board, star board and a slalom board made in 1987,” he says. His favourite spot is Takapuna Beach during a north-easterly wind and a low tide. “Then the waves are rolling in and give you platforms to jump. I have improved a lot during the last year and am able to play,” he says.

It’s a dog’s life in Devonport

More than 1,000 dog owners and their canines flocked to Windsor Reserve last Sunday for the fourth annual Devonport Dog Parade. The crowd was treated to a variety of dog displays and competitions. A sparkling gypsy violin and a seventeenth century masterpiece A near-capacity audience for the Devonport Chamber Orchestra’s (DC0) first concert of 2014 in Harmony Hall was treated to a programme of music of a variety of styles and eras played with verve and great talent. The orchestra was ably led by Michael Hunter. The concert opened with the Symphony in A Major by King Frederick the Great of Prussia. Known more for writing for the flute, which he also played, this symphony was one of four he wrote. While it demonstrated only modest composing ability, it was pleasant, undemanding music, and was played with sensitivity and enthusiasm. The real gem of the concert was JS Bach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor played by David Choi and the orchestra. Choi and his two brothers have performed for some years with the orchestra and all three were involved in this concert. David directed the orchestra as well, and from the first bar established complete control over tempi and balance. His playing is characterised by inspired

rhythm and impeccable intonation. His violin seemed to soar over the strings of the orchestra, who never dominated. The cello and bass section gave fine underpinning to the contrapuntal writing and stability to the work. The slow movement was played most sensitively bringing out the underlying tenderness. David varied the speed and intensity of the music and the orchestra supported him throughout. The third movement with its driving pace never felt out of control and soloist and orchestra questioned and answered each other in a great display of unity. Alexander Cowdell, who combined a career overseas as a professional violinist with some composing, occasionally plays with the orchestra and in this concert conducted their playing of his Canzona for String Orchestra. Written to be performed at the coronation concert of King Tupou V of Tonga, the piece was designed to provide peaceful reflection. Based on a Bach chorale, the canzona explores and

develops some of the elements found within the chorale. For the final work, Choi returned to play Monti’s Czardas, performed with great expertise and verve. The Czardas is a traditional Hungarian folk dance and David threw himself into the spirit of it. At one point he played the whole of the melody in harmonics while being accompanied by gentle pizzicato strings, before the tempo built up to a breathtaking conclusion. The toes of the audience were tapping and there was prolonged and very warm applause for this young North Shore musician, who combines music with a career as a doctor for the Auckland District Health Board. • The next concert is at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday 8th June at 2pm, when Paddy Cornfield will feature in his 10th anniversary piano concert with DCO performing Ravel’s Concerto for The Left Hand and Gershwin’s Concerto in F. Are you keen to combine a good deed with your food shop? Devonport Community House is looking for volunteers to transport Belmont senior citizens to New World once a week, fortnight or month. All you need is a standard driver’s licence and a bit of extra time. After 21 years in the job, Brian Kennedy has retired as the single chauffeur. Devonport Community House (DCH) staff Rebecca McMillan and Karen Shaw think it would be good to have a pool of drivers rather than just one. The two of them are chauffeuring once a week at the moment but say that having four or five other helpers would spread the load and help meet demand. “At the moment we pick up about eight seniors from Bardia Street, Roberts Ave, Alamein Ave and Preston Court on a Tuesday. Ideally we should do two runs per week. We have 18 people signed up and there definitely is the need for that,” says McMillan. Each run takes about two and half hours, including pick-up, drop-off and an hour of shopping. The seniors go to the supermarket, the post office and, if there’s time left, have a cuppa at Clarry’s. The vehicle is a Toyota Hiace, has manual transmission and anyone with a standard licence can drive it. Petrol is covered by a contribution from New World. If you are interesting in lending a hand as a driver, please contact the DCH on 445-3068 or email devonportcomhouse@xtra.co.nz Let’s go shopping…Doreen Lobb from Alamein Ave gets a helping hand from Karen Shaw and Rebecca McMillan (right)

Untidy Soldier cleaned up

The Devonport War Memorial – Frank Lynch’s 1924 bronze statue of the Untidy Soldier – was given a spruce up last week, in preparation for ANZAC Day. Auckland Council had commissioned bronze sculptor Bill Hayes to scrub the statue clean before he covered it with four layers of wax and buffed it up. He protected the sculpture’s stone base with plastic. It lists the names of 86 fallen soldiers and wreaths will be placed on it by the community during the ANZAC Day Parade on Friday 25 April, starting at 10 am.

Montana hopes to hip hop all the way to Nevada Montana Cooper (12) is dreaming of going to the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Las Vegas this year. She is one of nine girls in the newly formed crew Shique. Their 1.30 minute routine placed them third at the Auckland Hip Hop champs in March, which qualified them for the national finals to be held in Auckland on May 1 – 3. A trip to Las Vegas is up for grabs. The Belmont Intermediate Year 8 student is still buzzing about coming third. “We competed against Bubblegum, the junior crew world champions of 2012. And this was only our first time competing as Shique,” she says. Montana was in Las Vegas that year as well, competing in another New Zealand junior crew, a Mairangi Bay-based group called Khaos. They placed 12th. Montana, who lives in Narrow Neck, has been dancing ballet and jazz for four years and hip hop for three. Before competitions the crew practices daily at Sandringham’s The Dance Studio. Her crew puts together elements of different dance styles in their routine, from the more feminine vogue and energetic to the more boyish crump and swag, she says. More and more

Montana Cooper in one of her few moments off the dance floor girls are getting into hip hop dancing these days, Montana says. New Zealand crews are a force to be reckoned with at the world champs. They dominated in 2011 and 2012 and had at least one win in most other years.

Devonport swim club won five medals at the 11th annual King of the Bays ocean swim – 2.8km from Milford to Takapuna beach – last Saturday. Simon Millar came second in the male 45-49 division with a time of 34.10 mins; he also took out the overall championship for his age group after competing in three or more of the series events around the country. Jack Revill collected a gold medal in the men’s 20-24 age group with a time of 34.56 mins, narrowly beating Ben Marshall who came in at 34.57 mins and got silver in the 25-29 mens. Pamela Meyer won bronze in the female 30-34 division with a time of 40.22. Tom King came third in the non-wetsuit category, in the 55-59 age group. Club coach and professional triathlete Brent Foster came 15th in the elite swimmers’ event with a time of 31.39 mins, the same as the overall winner of the non elite event.

Auckland Council code of conduct, Gillon said. “I am unsure of the specifics of the complaint because the details were hidden in a privileged opinion written apparently by Russell McVeigh. “I was offered to see the opinion on the condition that I could not discuss it. I refuse to be muzzled in this way. Such action is also against the principles of natural justice,” Gillion said “However, I understand that the complaint is not against something we are alleged to have done in the past but the ludicrous notion that we might do something in the future.” He said the complaint is seemingly an attempt to deprive the community of the voices and votes of two of its elected members. “But the important thing is to reassure the Board, and the public, that I will speak and vote with an open mind and make decisions based upon the information and evidence that comes before me.”

The board was set to receive the information at its board meeting on Tuesday, after the Devonport Flagstaff went to press. Board chair Mike Cohen told the Flagstaff that the documents would be available at the Devonport and Takapuna libraries and at Auckland Council’s Takapuna service centre.

The board is now awaiting a legal opinion from council officers on the sale. Cohen said it appeared on initial reading that Land Information New Zealand had followed correct procedures in the freeholding of the land. However he questioned the quality of the legislation, which let the sale pass through with no local consulatation. Iwi were consulted as provided for by law and the same requirement should be made for local people, Cohen said.

Street party celebrates Philomel Crescent turnaround

Friends and neighbours… Faith Gage (11) (left) and Mafi Vaka (12), after finishing a long game of backyard cricket. They live four houses away from each other and both go to Belmont Intermediate School.

One of Devonport’s tougher streets has been given a helping hand in a coordinated sting by government and council agencies. Philomel Crescent celebrated its new lease of life with a street party. Flagstaff reporter Maire Vieth went along.

Police and Philomel Crescent residents shared sausages and played games together at a street party on Philomel Reserve to celebrate a safer community. But it was not always such a close relationship. The street had been on police radar for years, says Senior Sergeant Andy King, the police youth and community manager on the North Shore. Street disorder, alcohol and gang issues, drug abuse and dealing, house fires, car racing and some intimidation of other residents had been common problems, King says. “At times people were too scared to garden in their front yard,” he says. Over the last few months, police had coordinated the inter-agency response, enforcement and community liaison. “We tried to show that we were there to help,” King says. Ministry of Social Development and WINZ were involved in ensuring people the living in street were being adequately cared for socially and financially, he says. “Housing NZ looked at tenancies and breaches of contract by several addresses. One address was evicted, a second chose to move out and a third address was rehoused elsewhere. Probation were involved working with people living on the street who are on parole or probation,” King says. In addition, Auckland Council worked on crime prevention through environmental

design. Community patrol and North Shore Pacific Wardens patrolled the street and liaised with the community and Neighbourhood Support have looked into setting up groups in the area, he says. So when the police and wardens knocked on people’s doors to invite them to a “Philomel Community Day,” the residents were thrilled. Iska Girard, who has lived at Philomel Crescent for nine years, said: “It was fantastic to have a cop knock on the door with good news. Usually when we see them, we worry about what has happened again.” Thomas Mansell said: “We have really needed this in our area.” He was particularly pleased with the fire prevention demonstrations that were part of the event. “We have had three house fires over the last five years and also a couple of kitchen fires recently, so this is great,” he said. King said: “One resident thanked us for having had his first full night’s sleep in months.” The event was put together by community constable Jackie Strickland. It included a sausage sizzle, backyard cricket, swingball, a blow-up joust turned bouncy castle and a fire safety demonstration. About 50 children and their families came along, many of them chatting to police during the afternoon. Some police officers joined in games of swingball and rugby.

A 40km/h School Speed Zone (SSZ) will be introduced around Vauxhall School by June to make walking to and from school safer. Electronic speed limit signs will be installed on Vauxhall Road approaching the school and will flash during peak school traffic hours. They will be turned on and off by the school. Static 40km/h speed limit signs, displaying operating times, will be installed on side roads. The SSZ will be active 35 minutes before and 20 minutes after school. The speed limit reverts to 50km/h when the signs are not in operation. Further down the road, the DevonportTakapuna Local Board is investigating how to make the intersection of Vauxhall and Tainui Roads safer for pedestrians while improving the overall look of the small business centre. The project is still being assessed but currently has been estimated to cost around $99,000. The final proposal still needs approval from the board.

navy sHares Base wiTH neiGHBours On the last Saturday in March, the Navy hosted an Open Day at the Devonport Naval Base, the first since 2010. “The Open Day was a great way to show the people of New Zealand what we do,” said Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Jack Steer, who stood at the Main Gate at 10am to welcome the first of almost 10,000 visitors on board. “So much of what our Navy achieves occurs over the horizon and out of sight, so opening our doors provides a way of sharing those skills and our experiences with the public,” he said. Almost 10,000 visitors came through the Naval Base - five ships were open to the public, and HMNZS MANAWANUI was anchored off the wharves conducting boarding demonstrations all day. Shoreside, the Open Day provided opportunities to watch marching, physical training displays, and performances by the Navy Band, kapa haka, and Pipes and Drum Band.

Summer tournament week – on land and in the water WaTerpolo: One senior girls and one senior boys water polo team travelled all over Auckland for the North Island Water Polo Championships which ran over four days in late March. Throughout the weekend the teams played at Sacred Heart, West Wave, Epsom Girls Grammar and Diocesan. Overall the girls came fourth in the Senior Girls’ B grade, and the boys came sixth in the Senior Boys’ B grade. This was a significant achievement considering that three of the girls’ team were juniors, and at least half of the senior boys’ team were also juniors. On the final day, the girls played St Kentigern, but after a gruelling match came fourth, losing 5-7. The boys had a challenge against Mt Maunganui, eventually coming out of the twenty-minute game 3-4. BY CIARA CONNOLLY UlTimaTe FriSbee: For the first time ever, the New Zealand Secondary Schools Ultimate Frisbee Championships were held during Summer Tournament week, this year in Taupo. Coached by teacher Mr Matt Cade, we sent two teams. The girls’ team, captained by Tamara Bullock, led from the front the entire two days. The team won all six games which took them to the grand final against Avondale College. The wind got up in the final, but the girls dug deep and in extra time secured the final

play and sportsmanship, to come away with this award as well as the overall title speaks volumes about the girls and the way they play this sport. It was a two-day competition and after an early start on Monday morning, the boys came up against overall winners Auckland Grammar in their very first game. The boys’ team led by Travern Rua-Chase played well during their tournament with wins in the end against John Paul College and Hutt point to win 5-4 and become the inaugural Valley High School, which was their game National Girls’ Champions. They were of the tournament. They finished 10th also voted by all other teams for the Spirit overall for their first ever major competition. By Mrs Davies Award. As this sport is based hugely on fair

Valuable learning at World Vision get-together Six Takapuna Grammar students attended their first-ever World Vision conference at the ASB Showgrounds late last month, along with other Auckland students. It was a new and exciting experience for all of us. We were placed in teams representing a specific country, for a range of activities. One included having to fight to survive by building enough origami houses, acquiring farm animals and sourcing transportation to

sustain the land we owned, in a set time. This allowed us to learn about humanity and leadership. We also listened to captivating presentations and inspirational stories from a variety of interesting people. We went to the conference to learn as much as possible and to improve our knowledge of where, and to whom, the 40 Hour Famine money was going. It’s safe to say that although

we missed a day of school, we all learnt valuable information about the 2014 40 Hour Famine for our school and our eyes were opened to bigger issues in the world. Overall we enjoyed the day and it was great to meet students from different schools who are like-minded and were keen to share new ideas. By BriDget connoLLy

Students conquer Tongariro The Tongariro Crossing is one of New Zealand’s most famous day walks. A few weeks ago, our Year 12 geography students were fortunate enough to complete this track, on the annual geography camp. Over 90 travelled to Tongariro National Park, where they stayed at the warm and inviting Pipers Lodge for the three nights. On day two, they visited Mt. Ruapehu, comparing upper and lower river sites and collecting data for their internal assessment. A brisk walk down the volcano proved to be just a taster of what was yet to come. The next day, armed with snacks and wearing a variety of beanies, the team began the 19.4km walk. Climbing from 1400m to 1600m above sea level up the infamous Devil’s Staircase proved almost endless for some, although everybody managed it in the end and were proud of their efforts.

Looking down at the layer of cloud was an unusual feeling, yet a spectacular view. By the time the group had reached the highest point of the day, 1886m above sea level, they were ready for the descent, especially running down one hundred metres or so of scoria; a

terrifying yet thrilling experience. The Emerald Lakes proved to be a scenic spot for a lunch break and when it was time to finish the descent, the cloud had lifted, revealing a breathtaking view of National Park. By Lizzie vercruyssen

Cyclone lusi affects student camp As Cyclone Lusi hit, 60 Year 12 PE students were packing for their threeday, two-night trip to Muriwai. Due to exaggerated weather reports, the camp was shortened to one night and two days. Unfortunately this meant the two activities planned for Sunday – the tramp and top team – had to be adjusted. Students were put into pairs, and each pair had to organise and lead a group of 12 on one of the six challenging activities – mountain biking, orienteering, surf survival, top team, tree tops and a scavenger hunt (which was an adaptation due to the cancelled tramp). Students were marked on Social Responsibility and Leadership, worth seven credits in total. The general consensus was that the camp was a success – no one lost, no broken bones, and the sun was shining! By ciara connoLLy
