The Keeping The Bastards Honest investigative fund for the Devonport Flagstaff has reached its target - and then some. Through fundraising website Kickstarter we called for donations from the public to fund official information requests, property searches and the like to uncover information to better inform our readers.

The Flagstaff set a target of $2,000 and we reached $2,120. We received money through the site, cheques in the post, bank deposits, cash coming into the office – even donations from people bumping into Flagstaff staff in the street. The campaign received New Zealand wide publicity when it was showcased on National Radio in the My Song slot on Simon Mercep’s

afternoon programme. We will be spending the money as the need arises over the next several months and will keep readers informed on which stories the fund has been used for. In the meantime thank you to all our backers for your very kind support. Rob Drent, Editor

Councillor calls on AT to investigate Fullers Delays and cancellations by Fullers ferry services reached new lows last Friday, with multiple cancellations angering commuters. Auckland councillor Chris Darby has called on Auckland Transport to investigate how it can put pressure on Fullers to improve its service, which has been struggling since its staple boat The Kea was put out of service after it crashed in February. Darby took to Facebook last Friday and said: “If you are a ferry commuter and missed your boat this morning from either Devonport or Stanley Bay, you are probably fuming. “With all services out of Stanley Bay cancelled due to a so-called ‘vessel breakdown’, extra pressure immediately came on the Devonport services. This was further compounded by the late cancellation of four peak-hour Devonport services, again because of a ‘vessel breakdown’. “This morning’s cancellations come on the

back of numerous cancellations over the last few months, particularly affecting the Stanley Bay service.” Darby said he had forwarded the information about the cancellations to Auckland Transport (AT). But due to having limited control over ferry services that fall outside of their sphere of control (beyond the Public Transport Operating Model through which AT exercises oversight of bus and rail) their influence is limited. Darby said AT was urgently investigating the multiple cancellations of services and is looking at ways to flex some authority using other methods. The ‘vessel breakdown’ reason for cancellations appears to relate not to a recent breakdown but to the Kea crash in February and the lack of resilience in the Fullers fleet. Darby said AT are taking these service failures by Fullers “seriously.”

One-on-one mentoring coming to TGS Takapuna Grammar School has developed its own unique individual mentoring programme. Manaaki Mentoring will include the entire school – 1,700 students and 180 staff members, teachers, administrators and groundskeeper alike. Once a fortnight, groups of 10 Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) students will spend 15 minutes with a mentor assigned to them. TGS Principal Simon Lamb said the mentors will look at “the whole student and encourage, help and support them.” Manaaki is a Te Reo word that stands for dignity and encouragement. “It’s quite a unique system. It’s our idea, our structure and our organisation. I firmly believe that this innovation will see us reveal increased student performance and personal growth for all students at the school,” Lamb says. TGS groundskeeper Ross Chapman is a good example of the many things a mentor can offer to a child with a bit of one-on-one time with them, Lamb says. “Ross has a lot of practical skills and a huge amount of life experience. He can help students with goal-setting, developing life skills and how to apply those to their studies,” he says. The programme is based on the idea that a small amount of individual attention from a teacher or other mentor can have enormous benefit to the student’s achievements. He experienced it himself. “When I was a boy, I struggled with algebra and I had a maths teacher who offered me 15 minutes of advice and gave me some stuff to take away and it made a world of difference,” he says. The mentors themselves will be coached on a two-weekly basis, he says. Each group will include two students from each of school Years 9 to 13. Meetings are planned for every other Wednesday at 9:30 am and students will have to come in ten minutes earlier than usual (for late-opening Wednesday) for five sessions each term. Professional development and training for staff will be complete before the programme starts at the beginning of Term 3.

Medplus welcomes Dr Douglas Kingsford to the team

Medplus have secured another top doctor to join their team. Dr Fiona Brow, who worked with Douglas at the Navy for many years, is delighted that Medplus have been able to tempt him back to working in New Zealand after a two year stint in Canada. Douglas is a North Shore local, who attended Takapuna Grammar School and then Auckland Medical School, where he graduated top of his class. His grandfather was well known in years gone by as proprietor of Belmont Pharmacy. Douglas has been a GP on the North Shore on and off since 1995, working at various practices in addition to the Navy Hospital and Shorecare, and has a particular interest in psychological medicine. In addition to medicine, Douglas sometimes also works in software engineering, as he also has an electronic engineering PhD in artificial intelligence and considerable experience in that industry. Outside of work, Douglas enjoys running, weight

lifting, skiing, and the Kiwi outdoor lifestyle. He is married with two adult children, both of whom are currently studying engineering in Canada. Douglas has open books at the moment, and is looking forward to providing medical care to the community he knows so well.

Health Minister, Dr Jonathon Coleman, launched his Portal Initiative from Medplus. On 23rd April the Health Minister launched his new patient portal initiative from Medplus. His aim is that general practices will in the near future provide patient portals for their patients to access parts of their medical records. Medplus was chosen for the launch because it has trail blazed the way, operating a patient portal for well over a year and having more patients using it than any other medical centre in New Zealand. As a consequence Dr Heidi MacRae has been appointed an eAmbassador for the National Health IT Board. Dr Michele Hollis believes her patients enjoy being able to see their laboratory results on line and track them over time. “Our patients can see if

their results fall in the normal range, and we annotate all those that are abnormal. Of course we still contact our patients by phone if we need to follow up abnormal test results.” “It has been very useful for patients ordering repeat prescriptions, which they can now do with a click of a mouse” says Nurse Adelle Curham. Patients can now book their appointments on line, at any time of day or night, seeing exactly what their preferred doctor’s availability is. Sally McLaughlin, a receptionist at Medplus, states that the portal has been very easy for patients to use, and is extremely popular amongst all age groups.

Free Accident and Medical for under 13 years Medplus is part of the first wave of general practices offering free accident and medical care to enrolled under 13 year olds, starting on July 1st. This free service will operate between 8am and 5.30pm on weekdays, with a surcharge for evening and weekends. Dr Annie Si says “Since our opening, 4 years ago, we have been offering free care to under 6 year olds. It is a real bonus to our families that free health care can now be extended to under 13 year olds.”

House inspection bombshell for new owner Chantal Woodfire’s builder dropped a bombshell on her after checking on the foundations of her new home. “When he came back upstairs he said, first of all you need to do something about the flooring and by the way, you better call the police because I think I just found a bomb,” she says. Woodfire had bought the house only two weeks prior and said she thought the builder was joking. Within minutes of her call, police had cordoned off most of Beresford St in Bayswater, TV cameras arrived and members of the New Zealand Defence Force bomb squad swarmed into her garden where the builder had taken the device. They quickly identified the ‘bomb’ as a small and apparently harmless ordnance, and allowed the press to take photographs before they took it away. Woodfire says she will see if there is a chance to get the piece of ammunition back. “It would be a nice keepsake for my mantelpiece.” Police advise the public to leave found ordnance where it is found and call the police, rather than move it. As the Flagstaff went to press, it was not yet known how the bomb would have got to the address.

Shell-shocked… Chantal Woodfire is relieved the bomb scare at her new Bayswater home is over. The bomb (below) was taken away.

Cyclist hit by car A cyclist on the way to the ferry was knocked off his bike on Victoria Rd on Monday just after 9 am. The man had dropped his children off at school, and was cycling down Victoria Rd when he was struck by a car coming out of Clarence St and crossing the main street into Flagstaff Tce. He was taken to hospital for checks on a sore wrist.

Taxis move up parking rank Taxi stands have made a late run in the final Marine Square parking shakedown – quadrupling, while overall 48 parking spaces have been lost in the upgrade. Three all-day spaces outside the Devonport ferry terminal are now reserved for taxis as well as a fourth one at night. The fourth taxi rank, located outside the Esplanade at 2 Queens Parade, was originally designed as all-day. Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson Mark Hannan says local businesses requested the fourth space be removed entirely, and a loading zone be installed instead. “After consultation with the taxi industry, it was considered appropriate for this rank to be used during the daytime as a loading zone (6:30 am until 6:00 pm) and a peak-hour taxi stand overnight,” Hannan says. “We need to ensure taxis are available at all times and a rank as close as practical to the entrance to the terminal would best suit the area,” Hannan says. He says the new availability of night-time taxis “may encourage taxis to the Devonport town centre, the only rank south of Belmont and Takapuna.” “The rank is well known to the Devonport community, including the adjacent Naval Base, and for those that choose to use the ferry from the city and Hauraki Islands, especially over the summer holiday period,” Hannan says.

The approach seems to partially contradict the Auckland Transport Parking Strategy, currently out for consultation. The strategy states: “Taxi stands are considered where there is high public demand for taxis. “The length of the taxi stand should reflect the turnover of the space but generally taxi stands should be kept to less than three car lengths. “Taxi stands should not be located adjacent to bus stops and loading zones as the taxis will creep into this space. “Night-time taxi stands will be considered in areas where there is high night-time activity,” it says. Publishing for 22 years and regularly using the ferry, the Flagstaff has yet to see someone come off the ferry and jump into a taxi. Devonport Lingerie owner Donna Gustafson says when AT consulted with them, the local businesses, asked for a loading zone and for the taxi stands to be moved closer to the ferry building entrance. “So they did, which is great, but they left them over here as well. Now we have quite an excessive amount of taxi stands especially since taxis don’t usually stand in Devonport but are called when needed,” she says. Meanwhile, 48 car spaces have been lost in the redevelopment of the area. “Our current proposal is aimed at balancing the needs of the wide range of users of this area, including commuters and cyclists,” Hannan says.

Further changes in Marine Square parking restrictions are: • Five-minute drop-off and pick-up spots next to the pedestrian walkway. • Forty-seven carpool parks at Queen’s Parade long term carpark for vehicles with two or more people arriving before 9:30 am. Afterwards, the parks become general parking. Forty-sevenadditional car parks remain P24 hours. • Mobility parks include three P180 spaces next to the pedestrian walkway and two all-time spaces in the long-term car park. • Square all-day motorcycle parks replace four parallel parking spaces along Windsor Reserve. • New P180 parks on the sea side of Queens Parade.

White off – Pari totals his pride and joy After a lucky escape from a recent car flip, Pari Rikihana is mourning the loss of his vehicle more than worrying about his injuries. Rikihana (68) cracked a rib and spent a night in hospital, but was keener to talk about his beloved white 1994 Mercedes Benz 320 E Sport Line when the Flagstaff checked up on him. “I flipped my pride and joy and made an absolute mess of it. It was an icon around Devonport and everybody knew it. I loved it for 21 years. It had about 250,000km on it and brand-new tyres on its pretty-wide wheels, but it’s totalled, it’s gone,” he says. “I once lent it to a friend who drove it through Devonport and said that all the ladies were waving at him, so he took a second turn around the place,” he says. The accident happened within a second, says Rikihana. “I was driving down Vauxhall Rd at around 11 am and it was pissing down with rain when the back of my car slipped a tiny bit. I corrected it and suddenly slammed into a truck parked on the left. My left front tyre rode up the back tyre of the truck, and flipped the car,” he says. Rikihana, once in the Navy himself, was pulled from the vehicle by a group of young Navy recruits. “I was hanging upside down in the car in my seatbelt and a young Navy guy came and asked me whether I was alright. I said, no, not really. They switched off ‘the beast’ and cut my seatbelt and I fell down on the inside of the roof,” he says. “I wasn’t knocked out, so I sat on the curb with the rescuers and reminded myself how lucky I was,” he says. One consolation was that his distinctive number plate ‘Pari’ survived the crash.

Lucky escape… Pari Rikihana (above) was relatively unhurt, but his distinctive white Mercedes (below) was totalled

By Rob Drent Dogs – nothing seems to divide a community like man’s best friend – (however cycling and cyclists are attempting to nudge our canine companions off the top spot). As soon as our story on the local’s board’s proposals for revised dog by-laws hit the streets, the letters started flooding in. The most controversial part of the plan is to ban dogs from the main Devonport beaches during winter from 11am to 2.30pm. Currently dogs are allowed on the beach at any time in winter. I would like to add another proposal to the argument. Why not have a dedicated beach area the dog owners can visit all year round, summer included? A good site would be the northern end of Narrow Neck beach. Compar-

Reel Theology Discussing Theology in the Film

The Flagstaff Notes atively rocky, with little beach area, it is barely used by humans even at the peak of summer. New York, one of the most populus cities in the world has designated dog areas in Central Park. Auckland may not be at this level of separation in its parks, but maybe it has to come to its beaches. • Declaration of interest: I have owned two dogs in my life. I do not own one now but I look after one on a regular basis. My partner Jo almost lost her leg in a dog attack and is frightened of dogs. So I can see both sides.

June 12 2015 Auckland Transport’s bus review document is out for consultation, with the most controversial change for Devonport probably the proposal to redirect the service to Takapuna away from the main shopping area. However while Fullers is increasing its services at night Auckland Transport, is planning only limited bus connections. The final service leaving the ferry building is at 10.30 pm during weekdays and 10 pm on weekends. It kind of defeats the purpose of wanting more ferries on the one hand but leaving customers with no public transport when they come home from town.

Talking of Narrow Neck beach, I was walking along there the other day and came across this sign and thought it pointless. By the time you read it rocks will have fallen on your head, and in any case it seemed quite a stable part of the cliff face. I suspect council was really wanting to refer to dangerous cliffs further north. I would be happy to hear from any readers who have spotted other oddities from Auckland Council’s Department of Stupid, Riduculous, Silly and Ineffective Signs.

With trepidation, an overriding sense of sadness and a glimmer of hope, Prue Smith has returned to earthquake-torn Nepal. She spoke to Rob Drent on the eve of her departure. Prue Smith still feels “jumpy” a few weeks on from being in Kathmandu during the earthquake that claimed more than 8,000 lives across Nepal and destroyed infrastructure and thousands of buildings. It is as if she and others who lived through the quake are still part of the country, which has suffered some 250 aftershocks since the initial quake on April 25. The general manager of the Himalayan Trust, the charity that carries the spirt of its founder Sir Edmund Hillary, also admits to being a “bit nervous” both by the amount of devastation she will find on her return and the enormity of the rebuild. But mostly Smith is thinking about the Nepali people, who following the earthquake have endured rain, hailstorms and windstorms and are bracing for the ‘Monsoon that is about to fully hit.” When Smith returns to Nepal, she will be part of a team focusing on how to rebuild and restore what the trust has created over the last 50 years. An example of the enormity of the tragedy is the impact on the 67 schools the Himalayan Trust supports. For example early evidence suggests that in one area with 12 schools, four have been flattened. With an average cost of US$25,000 per classroom and six classrooms per school, the donations will be quickly gobbled up. New Zealanders have rushed to help. More than $700,000 has been donated to the Himalayan Trust through a Givealittle campaign. The New Zealand government has chipped in $100,000 and is likely to provide more, says Smith. Most of Smith’s work will centre on planning the rebuild and working with other agencies and the Nepalese government. But it may also involve some field trips to assess the damage. She has booked to go to Nepal for 10 days, but is more likely be away for two to three weeks. Smith has been astounded by how much New Zealanders have contributed. Fundraising has included an art auction, on June 5, with Devonport artists Mikey Smih and Simon McIntyre contributing, and the The Banff Mountain Film Festival will be holding Auckland screenings (June 16 and 18 at 7:30pm, SKYCITY theatre. A fundraising Himalayan trek is planned next April. Even Smith’s son Louis felt the fundraising zeal when he went

Back to Nepal… earthquake survivor Prue Smith to a barbecue and paid $20 for Nepal. “Clearly Sir Ed’s legacy is strong in people’s minds and hearts in New Zealand,” says Smith. The same was true in Nepal where Sir Ed’s way of operating was to engage the local people through friendship and work together on projects, Smith says. It is this engagement with the local people that Smith hopes will hold the key to the rebuild of 50 years’ hard work. And she has some optimism that from the disaster a sense of hope and good can emerge as Nepal begins its slow recovery. • For more information go to http://himalayantrust.org

Pedestrians have won over “enhanced retail space” in the final stages of the $5.5 million makeover of the Devonport Ferry building in a recent backdown by Auckland Transport. The tender documents for leasing the new retail space at the northern end of the wharf show a three-metre wide internal public concourse along the western side. Only a year ago Auckland Transport (AT) had proposed sacrifing the concourse for retail space. However Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Mike Cohen says keeping the internal concourse has its problems. It creates the “absurdity of having three entrances to the wharf within 50 metres. Visitors arriving in Devonport will be as confused by this as they are now. The whole idea behind the redevelopment was to really clarify the connection between the wharf and the village and Victoria Road by creat-

ing a direct sight line from the wharf exit.” Last year, AT had proposed a redirection of that pedestrian pathway to the outdoors along the western and eastern side of the wharf “to create a larger and enhanced retail space”. AT consulted the public and found that 53 % opposed the change. Last week, AT spokesperson Mark Hannan told the Flagstaff: “The consultation process indicated there was negative feedback on the proposal (to redirect the walkway). AT chose not to proceed.” Meanwhile, 73% of respondents opposed the 50-metre-long bus shelter proposed at the same time. A final decision on the shelter has not been made yet, the Flagstaff understands. Last November AT said on its website that due to funding availability the projects had been delayed.

Driver hits the 3am wall

The Devonport Car Column

Welcome, Devonportians, to your new column covering all things automotive, through the eyes and ears of your neighbourhood car dealer! I will be covering news and views from the wonderful world of cars, and my own take on what makes motoring so much fun. And I promise to never mention cycle lanes. We often get asked for ‘something that will be a good first car’. Often we find this is driven by the new driver’s peer-group approval. The boys want a race car, the girls want a cute Beetle (Ok, generalising there a bit, but it is based largely on our actual experience!). Our advice is thus: Avoid cars that will head sideways for the nearest lamp-post. Avoid cars that like the attention of a tender, loving mechanic. Remember that older, cheaper cars are less safe. Look at the total cost of ownership for the year (car plus insurance plus petrol plus likely service/repair costs). And create awareness in your young driver of the significance of these factors so they are engaged in the buying and after-care processes. Call us for advice at any time! Until next time, drive safe, and enjoy the ride!

The car also damaged two walls of adjacent properties.

New bus route no way to get more cars off Lake Rd I’m astounded Auckland Transport has decided to remove the Albert Rd section from their proposed new bus routes. Instead the bus will go along the waterfront, turn into Church St before heading along Vauxhall. This means people in the Melrose area and around the Mt Victoria end of Lake Road will have to walk to the ferry buildings to catch a bus. Or, if they’re not up to a 25 to 35 minute hike, they could make use of the proposed ‘Cheltenham loop’ bus (no mention of whether the timetable will coordinate with the Devo/Taka one). So it will be two buses or a long stint on foot. This is certainly no way to get more cars off Lake Road! Honestly, I despair at the lack of local knowledge of planners with the new ‘Supercity’. If they’d only checked, they would have found that the Albert Rd route was specifically chosen to make it feasible for people from as

More damage done by Lake Rd traffic than Scout’s Coal

many areas as possible to use public transport when the number of buses leaving the ferry was first reduced. Just look at the map and you’ll see that two thirds of the local area will not be within a reasonable distance of our most-used transport option. Submissions open on the 2nd June, so if the changes will make a difference to you, please let them know your thoughts. Approx 528 properties in Melrose and around the Northern part of Lake Road will be negatively affected, plus one school. These people will face approximately 15 minutes more walking time or need to add an extra bus trip. Approx 180 properties along King Edward Parade and in the lower part of Church Street will receive the benefit of a direct trip to Takapuna. Lyndsay Brock

In reply to Hilary Jones and “Fossil fuels for dinosaurs” in the May 29 issue of the Flagstaff. Jones comments that selling coal to fundraise is hypocritical and abhorrent. Is burning coal, along with firewood, by a few people, for a few weeks of the year, so terrible? I assume that Jones, along with thousands of us, sits in nearly stalled traffic on Lake Road every day. Or perhaps she travels by air when on holiday? This surely is a bigger issue than Scouts selling coal! People like Jones, rather than denigrate the Scouts, should support them. Perhaps she and others would like to donate, say, $100.00 each to the Scouts so that they would not have to fundraise. I joined the Scouts in 1955 and what was taught to me there has stayed with me all of my life. Curricular-included self-reliance, self-discipline, survival skills, first aid, helping people, honesty and respect for authority, to name a few. Scouting is still very relevant today! Terry Bracey

Cycle lane removal would make survey redundant 1. Remove the cycle lanes – they are rarely used and take up valuable road space. 2. Allocate cycle lanes to half the footpath area - they already exist in some sections. (All the current school cyclists sensibly use the safe option of the footpath.) 3. Widen the road using the exisiting successful model of Esmonde Rd to Hauraki corner. (Easily done - look at the example of the informal double lanes formed on a daily basis by northbound traffic at Hauraki Corner.) 4. Move the island at Belmont a metre or so to the east, and use the additional space to provide a lane for vehicles turning right into Bayswater Ave - thus ensuring that there is no bottleneck. Regrettably intensification is coming. The

Wonderful news! A residents group will be helping Auckland Transport to “work out the best options” for Lake Road congestion. Gasps of disbelief! They will begin by ascertaining “exactly who its users are” and their “genders, ages, (and) occupations”. Why not toss in marital status, religious affliation and sexual preference to provide further enlightenment for this well meaning group? They appear to be off to a sound start - the group’s spokesman is quoted as saying “sorting out the traffic problems … is not complicated, it’s just not easy”. Such insightful logic is indeed reassuring. The answer to the Lake Rd congestion is quite simple - and does not require yet another survey.

result? Increasing numbers of vehicles jamming a road that was built over 100 years ago to accomodate horses, bicycles and the occasional vehicle. Do we need another elongated study? Of course not. The solution is simple. Widen the road and let the traffic (including public transport vehicles) flow free. Dr John Reynolds

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 15

Council survey sends Ron racing to Lotto shop It’s Saturday and I’m shaking from the excess coffee intake at Correllis, yet again. It’s raining dogs, and I reckon I need a Lotto ticket. Just outside the cafe, I go to cross the road, and there’s four metres width of new seal that replaces the brand new sealed road that’s been cut up four times before today in about 10 months. Yesterday there were 10 men doing the 36 square metre new seal of the new seal that’s no more. Orcon cut up the place for a cable with 20 men just a couple of weeks back, and their trench caused subsidence, and these 10 guys on the reseal of the reseal didn’t really compact the Orcon trench either. The quality of the new seal looks set to fail again soon. There is no limit to this sealing business. The two big drains are blocked one either side of the road, so I guess these will need to be taken up, albeit they’ve been blocked now for 10 years; the water pours on over the top of these traps, they should have removed. I got on past this fiasco of council incompetence and all but got down to the Lotto shop, and hey, a questionaire. Auckland Transport (AT) had a survey company, with three young ones with clipboards, asking had you been on Lake Road today? Why did you drive it? Where did you go? What for? And if you could have, could you have taken a bus or a ferry? Then they asked were you a bloke or a girl? And how old or young are you? Oh my god. Idiots. This company paid to ask questions of total irrelevance by council and AT clowns; they said that AT was looking for design solutions for Lake Rd. I was foaming at the mouth after that brainless exercise, and blew 120 bucks on a ten-week Lotto ticket, just in case I might come across the same goon squad again next week. Better to avoid them. No good will come from their antics. Clutching the winning ticket, I noticed there was a sailboat race on the harbour; it was dead still and misty, the sailboats looked stuck in a time, motionless, sails up. I was drawn to the wharf for a closer look; bugger me I struck a 50 mm deep puddle outside the Esplanade.

It’s true, created by the fancy brand-new paving that had no proper drainage lines, and water was trapped between the lawn, the palm and the granite pavers. What a bloody mess, and now I’ve got me shoes wet inside. Holy hell… I was drawn further to the wharf by the sight of some fancy new hardwood railings that looked like leftovers from the vertical wings on the library. The eye drew me to look at the rather pleasing dead-straight line extending from Victoria Road right into the side of the old ferry building. I’m guessing, but they may put a door through where the path hits the ferry building, or they may not I suppose. Anyhow if you like solid things, get your butt down there on the new wharf and get a load of that tropical hardwood forest decking and the fancy new rails. Carbon locked in the wood, this structure is carbon-neutral, and harvested from sustainable forests. The balustrade to stop you falling in the sea is 6 or 7mm wide, fandango thing it is, stainless this, stainless that, fancy-cuts double-sided, fantastic, looks pretty fancy mate – but dumb ! Such a contrast to all that cracked-up concrete on the new wharf, just finished close by, this stuff is surely not going to crack up on us like that did; it’s built like a brick toilet. We need a few new cafes to add to the 30-odd we have already, and they will be open soon on this wharf with immigrant owners and $1 cups of coffee. But what really got me going this arvo, was that recliner and bench furniture strewn adhoc around the multi-material paved areas between the pub and the terminal, and the pictures in the paper this morning showed when they are done down there soon, there will be heaps more of these things that look like structures for having sex on, or skateboarding I suppose. This council mob really is going over dead bodies to please us all I guess. I do caution any of you that think that it’s ok to play on these benches in a public place, even in the dark; these firm benches are for looks not fun or relaxation. Ron Dykman

Wrapt with new bus service – but not the delay I was thrilled to read about the new bus system - great news for those people living in Cheltenham and the extension to Smales Farm is long overdue. I told my partner that rather than walk/ferry/walk to Victoria Park in the cold, he’d be able to catch the bus from outside

our door, change at Smales Farm to one of the buses that come down the fast lane every three minutes from Albany and be dropped right in Fanshawe St. Great, he said, when does it start? I reread the article. Two years. R. France

Our readers respond to planned restrictions I love the Flagstaff and think that they deserve all the awards they receive. As a relative newcomer to Devonport I find their articles very interesting and informative. However I read this week’s issue with a sinking heart as I am at a loss to understand why, with one hand, Auckland Council is prepared to lift alcohol bans on local Devonport beaches and, with the other, is considering banning and restricting dog owners/lovers the freedom of the same beaches during the winter months? What kind of health message are they sending out to us??? I am a dog owner, so I am naturally biased, but I respect the rules already in place, adhere to the summer restriction, keep my dog under control and pick up her (and sometimes other dog) poo when out walking. There are two issues here. Firstly the few irresponsible owners that cause people to complain. Secondly, and I feel more importantly, the fact that the council will only ever hear complaints. When was the last time someone called them to say how wonderful it was to walk on the beach during the winter with your dog, I wonder? Dog owners and lovers need to let them know that we really do care and do not want rules and regulations to restrict our right to walk with freedom during the winter months. DOG OWNERS of DEVONPORT UNITE!!!! Emma Atkinson-Wiles I fully support the local board’s proposed restrictions on dogs at beaches. As a regular swimmer and Cheltenham beach user I have noticed a significant increase in the numbers of dogs being exercised on the beach. Unfortunately a small but noticeably growing number of dog owners seem to think that the beaches are dog toilets. Most people can appreciate the desire of dog owners to exercise their dogs on a beach but surely at the same time consideration of other users is a obligation that accompanies this privilege. In the interest of public health and the enjoyment of all, the restrictions and associated designation of certain areas as dog zones and off leash areas seems an excellent compromise. Patrick Merrick

I think the proposed restrictions would be a reasonable minimum for people who prefer time on the beach without dogs. As Auckland becomes increasingly overpopulated, some quiet walking time without dogs rushing, barking and defecating nearby would be appreciated by many people. Susan Davis

Dogs may face compromise over winter access to beaches It makes me seethe to see that the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board is proposing to restrict dog-walking times on the beaches. What gives them the right to do this? This isn’t in the public interest; the only people walking on the beaches in winter are dog walkers. I know as I’ve been walking there for 20 years. Let’s continue to share the beaches and stop this before it gets out of hand. It will start on the beaches, then there will be restrictions on North Head and Mt Victoria and so it goes. Lynda Mahony I just wanted to express my disappointment at the proposal to restrict dogs on beaches during winter. As a dog owner I find this very sad. I make sure I collect all dog poo on the beach & free range time is really important to my dog’s wellbeing (and mine)! I like the freedom I have in winter to walk her any time of the day after the restricted summer access (which I always abide by). Our beaches are often empty in winter EXCEPT for dog owners. I really hope this does not come to pass. Rebecca Leathem

What’s planned Dog access to the main Devonport beaches during winter will be cut back under local board proposals. Currently dogs are allowed off-leash on beaches at all hours outside daylight savings time. The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board is proposing to make beaches dog-free during winter from 11 am until

2.30pm, to accommodate those who want to walk on the beach when no dogs are there. The aim is a “better balance between public safety and comfort and the needs of dog owners,” according to the board. The board proposes banning dogs on beaches between 10 am and 6 pm during summer.

I definitely support more restrictions on dogs on beaches. Bear in mind it is not the dogs that create problems but the owners. We are surrounded by dogs that bark during the day while owners are away – poor neglected animals. We had dogs on the farm but the city can be hell for dogs. We do not want to become like Takapuna beach where it is “dog highway” on summer mornings with dogs ruling. I have seen people knocked over by unleashed dogs and owners think it is “cute”. John Clark In reply to your article dated May 29 on dog access being potentially reduced, I would like to express my views as you kindly invite your readers to do so. I am not a dog owner but love animals, having owned pets for most of my life, including two dogs. I moved to Devonport 18 months ago (from Europe) and started to go for runs on the beach shortly after moving here. After many attempts to go for an enjoyable and uninterrupted run on Narrow Neck beach and Cheltenham beach, I gave up. I no longer go. Every time, at least one dog ran towards me to jump all over me, forcing me to stop or deviate, trying to become free of the dog. This was highly unpleasant so I stopped going. The problem does not come from the dogs but rather the owners who either do not train the dog or do not have enough authority (or will) to prevent their dogs to jump all over people. I agree dog owners need to walk their dogs of course. But what about the right of other people to enjoy the beach just as much, without having to deal with unwelcomed assaults (not knowing whether the dog might actually bite)? This is without mentioning that I cannot take my daughter with me any longer (during dog access hours, i.e. winter). She is now afraid of dogs, having been jumped over by a dog twice her size many times now. I find dogs’ rights far exceed people’s rights nowadays and this is wrong. I would certainly welcome stricter rules on dog access on Devonport’s beautiful beaches. And I am not alone. Many thanks for giving me the opportunity to express myself on this issue. on dog access to main beaches during winter Just reading your article about dogs being on a tighter leash on beaches. I am not a dog owner but I don’t dislike dogs at all on the beach. I think they do need to be able to have access to our beaches. In saying that I love the idea of a time ban for beaches. Walking or just going to the beach is great fun and good for you, but there is nothing worse than having soggy, wet, smelly (you must admit, dogs smell when wet) and dribbling pooch (big or small) bowling up to you and almost taking you out! It’s not the dog’s fault. They are just enjoying their time on the beach. I think it’s up to the owners to stop that behavior and if they can’t then the beach ban is a good thing. After all, if I wanted to go home smelling of dog......I would get a dog! The beach is for all to share and share we should! Time bans are a good way for parents of small children to feel safe. It’s not like we haven’t had our fair share of dog attacks in New Zealand is it? (Ok dog owners.... please calm down... I’m not saying all dogs attack! I’m just saying that a lot that have attacked ended up with the owner saying something like: “s/he was a family pet and never attacked anyone before!”) As a parent I can see why we need to put a ban on at our local beaches, because what comes first... a child’s safety or a dog’s walk? Kelly Lamont-Bennett I disagree that you should restrict dogs on the beach because it is an ideal dog walking place. Lachlan Wallace (age 10) I think that dogs should be allowed to be on the beach after school hours because that is when the kids walk their dogs. Nick Wallace (Year 5)

I am a non-dog-owning beach user, delighting in my daily walk on Narrow Neck Beach for the past 30 years. Along with many dog owners, I enjoy the morning exercise before getting on with my day (ie I don’t want to walk between 11 and 2.30) but more recently I find I avoid the beach as it is so busy with dogs. They are having a great time socialising and toileting but the numbers are increasing at an alarming rate. The owners are now extending the offleash privilege to the Fort Takapuna area and often in the general suburban streets, which is concerning. I wish it would be acknowledged as a privilege, not a right, for dogs to defecate on our beaches instead of in their own backyards, and perhaps in exchange the owners, as they walk back and forth, would bother to bend over and collect a few pieces of the ever-increasing plastic debris that is invading our shores. It would do something to mitigate the nuisance value of their beloved pets. Pauline Bern

Yes I support the proposals - as a non-dog owner. In fact, I would like the non-dog hours to extend later into the afternoon. Dogs in Cambria Reserve are also a problem. At times, the park is overrun with dogs off-leash. The original intent was for the park to be dog-free. This would be ideal but perhaps not possible at this stage. However, dog times could be restricted and it could be a leash place only. What do you think? Robert Beaglehole

Devonport gives birth to new writers

The Devonport peninsula has been a writers’ haven for close to one hundred years – and it still is. Before the Harbour Bridge was built, the quiet and beach suburbs attracted writers such as Rex Fairburn, Frank Sargeson, Janet Frame, and Kevin Ireland Arrivals since include Graeme Lay, Michelle Leggot, Sue Orr and Shonagh Koea. Last month, the Flagstaff caught up with three emerging and recently published local writers – Hanna Tunnicliffe, Karen Breen and Anna Glamuzina. All three were charmed by Devonport as youngsters. After extended travels across the globe, and previous careers, they too have found the peninsula a great place to live and write. Hanna Tunnicliffe is a former HR Director and career coach and has just published her second novel, Season of Salt and Honey, in New Zealand. She launched it at Devonport’s Paradox Books and during its first week on the market, it made it to second place on the Independent Bookshop Bestsellers List. The coming-of-age story follows a woman called Frankie as she starts her life again after her childhood sweetheart and fiancé dies in a surfing accident. Frankie escapes her Italian-American family and good-girl persona and heads to Washington State’s coastal rainforest. There she comes to terms with her loss and meets an eclectic group of people. The novel will be published in the US this September. Tunnicliffe moved to Stanley Bay two years ago from Vancouver, Canada. Before that, she lived in Melbourne, Sydney, London and Macau. But the pull to Devonport was long-standing and strong. “I grew up in Campbells Bay and have wanted to live in Devonport since I was six. I don’t even know why. I have done a lot of travelling and lived in lots of places but being back home is heaven to me - having kids here, the community and just the beauty of the place,” she says. Anna Glamuzina’s story is a similar one. She has lived in the Netherlands, Ireland and the UK. She says she took flight from a past life as a lawyer “running and screaming.” After years as an immigration consultant she decided to give writing a go. Glamuzina moved to Hauraki twelve years ago. Of Dalmatian descent and raised in West

Following the Devonport literary tradition, local writers… (from left to right) Hanna Tunnicliffe, Anna Glamuzina and Karen Breen Auckland, she visited Devonport as a child to go to swim at the beach. “We took the ferry across and I thought Devonport was so exotic,” she says. “Now I think it is a great place to bring up kids and a great place to be writer. You can look out at Rangitoto, walk the beaches and there are lots of great writers living here,” she says. Glamuzina just published her second book and first novel, Rich Man Road, the story of two very different immigrant women and their shared search for belonging. Olga is a traumatised Dalmatian World War Two refugee. She meets Pualele, a young Samoan woman who arrived in New Zealand in an illegal adoption during the 1970s. Glamuzina was one of the first graduates from Auckland University of Technology’s brand-new Master in Creative Writing degree set up in 2008. She says it is one of the best things she has ever done, in part because she met other writers there, including Narrow Neck local Karen Breen. Breen’s connection to Devonport goes back a generation. “My mother grew up in Stanley Bay and I lived in Belmont and went to Westlake Girls. When I was growing up I couldn’t wait to get off the Shore but after 10 years in London and then with a new baby, I just wanted to pop my baby in the buggy and go down to the beach or pop round to my mum’s,” she said about her return 13 years ago.

During the 10 years she spent in London, Breen worked as a television producer and director for Channel 4 and 5 and the BBC, doing documentaries. She returned to New Zealand after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and began her career as a novelist after graduating alongside Glamuzina. “It was helpful to have the external structure of a degree. It pushed me to put those words down and deliver and was a good start to make it my job,” she says. Breen published her first novel, Sleep Sister, this March. “It’s primarily set in 1987 and is about two sisters, Gilly and Marina, who are young women and have grown up during the late 70s, a time when children were allowed to roam freely and only came home for dinner,” she says. A recent death in the family ends the silence around a tragic Northland camping trip in 1979 and blows the sisters’ relationship apart. Breen and Glamuzina are not only authors but also directors of Eunoia Publishing. They launched the new independent publishing company with three fellow writers last year, and have already published four books, including their own. Starting Eunoia was half necessity, half opportunity and is their response to the changing publishing landscape. “At the moment in New Zealand it is pretty dire for publishing in some respects. A lot of the big internationals are either exiting New Zealand or contracting, so it is really difficult for first-time writers to get

Interview

June 12 2015 published,” says Breen. Rather than self-publish their novels, Glamuzina says they joined the Publishers Association of New Zealand and enlisted the help of publishing professionals. “In the contraction of the industry, there are a whole lot of professionals and designers out there freelancing and looking for work, so we could tap into that,” she says. They keep overhead costs down by working “virtually” from home. The office address is a PO Box in Takapuna. Glamuzina says Eunoia’s philosophy to produce books that are “as good as those by the big multinationals – if not better” is working. “We have researched it very carefully and think it’s the way of the future. Our books have been recognised critically and commercially and we are really proud of that,” she says. Tunnicliffe is on a different publishing path. Her two novels have been published by Pan Macmillan Australia and in the US by Touchstone, a subsidiary of Simon and Schuster. Her first, The Colour of Tea, was inspired by three years living in Macau, where she resigned from her demanding position as HR Director for a casino to follow her natural inclination to write. The book was “a personal project and I wrote 1,000 words a day and a fictional story about a woman who opens a café in Macau and bakes macaroons,” she says. Tunnicliffe sent her first draft to a cousin, an editor at Pan Macmillan. “She gave me a lot of feedback and I took her advice. When

I sent it to her again, she told me to submit it but said it would compete with 1,000 other submissions. It felt like buying a lottery ticket. The odds were so low I thought I might as well do it,” she says.

‘Devonport’s sense of community helps combat writer’s loneliness,’ says author Karen Breen

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 19 own and I am keen to connect with other local writers,” she says. Devonport’s sense of community helps combat writer’s loneliness a bit, says Breen. “Writing is such a solitary pursuit that you need to be somewhere that feeds the soul. A local spirit is important and being next to the sea or in a great community helps. You can’t just write out of your head all the time,” she says. Breen and Glamuzina occasionally write together. “We have formed our own little community after we graduated and sometimes we write together, with others as well. We meet up at someone’s house, drink tea and write,” Glamuzina says. With three books just out, Tunnicliffe, Glamuzina and Breen are already working on their next projects. For Tunnicliffe, it is a novel set in Brittany about a group of London college friends who celebrate a 40th birthday over a long weekend. Glamuzina’s next book follows a character who escaped a Bosnian city during the ethnic conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, and ends up in the centre of Christchurch during the earthquakes. Breen says it’s early days for her next work. “Coming from television, I am a very visual writer. I write out images and see where they take me. I absolutely love being back in that stage of writing. It feels like proper creativity,” she says.

Three weeks late with the birth of her first child, Tunnicliffe received a letter offering publication. “I was screaming and my husband thought I had gone into labour,” she says. The second book proved difficult. After sending a first full draft to Macmillan, her editor told her it didn’t work and couldn’t be fixed. “It was quite devastating. But I learned a lot from it and it galvanised my determination for writing to be a career,” she says. Human interaction is the only thing she misses in her new career, Tunnicliffe says. With two preschool daughters, her writing desk is away from home, at a favourite table in Belmont’s • In our next issue: new local writers feature – part 2: Bayswater author Robert Glancy. Stanley Bay pupils happy to have the Blues

All eyes on the ball…Hector McIntyre (left) and Jackson Harvey with Jerome Kaino Stanley Bay School pupils have been learning the tricks of the rugby trade from All Black Jerome Kaino and the Blues. The school was among several that joined the full Blues squad in training drills and other activities at the Takapuna Rugby Club.

Stanley Bay, Belmont Primary, Beach Haven, Silverdale, Greenhithe, St Marys, Campbells Bay and Red Beach schools all took part. “The Blues love to be out among our young fans and have some fun with them,”

said Blues captain Kaino. “Many of us are parents and we know that it is important for kids to be active and have fun, and this is a great way for us to give a little bit back to our community and our young fans.”

Woodall Park becomes adventure playground

Sticking together… Joshua Wesney and Ellie Mackenzie-Clark get ready for morning tea Fifteen four-year-old explorers went on a Narrow Neck Playcentre nature trip, searching for treasures among the trees at the back of Woodall Park. Groups of four, camera in hand, took photos of leaves, flowers, clouds and rocks. All had a delicious morning tea in the fresh air and found a stick to take home too. The children had caught the nature bug earlier in the term on a centre-wide trip to Kawau Island, where they built huts, kayaked, fished, swam and explored Camp Bentzon.

Olga Katrychenko – to Russia with love for her family Olga Katrychenko, a familiar face at the Lotto counter in the New World supermarket, is leaving her post to return to Russia. Katrychenko started working at New World 10 years ago. It was her first job after she arrived in New Zealand from Ukraine. “I started at checkout for a year and then did three months in the bakery. Then I went to Lotto and I have worked here for the last nine years,” she said. In May 2007 she sold a customer a $1million winning ticket, and there have been many other smaller winners over the years. Katrychenko is also an accomplished amateur photographer. Three years ago, she had a photo published in New Zealand Geographic magazine, of daughter Yulia waving at her from the sand dunes at Hokianga. “Someone at the magazine saw it on Flickr and contacted me,” she says.

On Queen’s Birthday weekend, Katrychenko left for Switzerland to visit daughter Yulia and grandchildren Noah (5) and Angelina (2). Then it’s on to Armavir near the Black Sea, where Olga will look after her 88-year-old mother Anastasia. “She is the best woman I know and I want to take care of her for a while,” she says. While away, Katrychenko will celebrate her 60th birthday in June. She assured the Flagstaff that she had a round-trip ticket and will be back at her Narrow Neck home in October. “When I get back, I would love to continue with my photography,” she says. While Olga is away, her presence will remain in a self-published photo book Devonport in Your Heart at Devonport Library and in her To return to Russia... postcards for sale at Haywards Paper Power. Dog and donkey show comes to Bayswater Two donkeys and three dogs popped in for a visit to the Preston Court senior-citizen flats last week. The animals are part of the St John and SPCA initiative Outreach Therapy Pets. Animals and residents gathered on a lawn outside the flats, where seniors had cups of tea and doggy cuddles with Labrador Oscar, Bichon Monty and Miniature Schnauzer Mo. The donkeys were a bit more more aloof. Many of Preston Court’s residents used to own pets before moving there. Council allows cats but nothing bigger. Recently retired history lecturer John Young shares his unit with his cat Auroa. Other seniors no longer want the responsibility of looking after a pet. Resident Maggie Evetts says since her 22-year-old cat Basil passed away, she has been reluctant to commit to a new pet. “I miss him but I just couldn’t take on a new pet that would outlive me,” she says. Outreach Therapy Pets’ first visit to Devonport was initiated as a trial by Devonport Community Coordinator Maria Teape and real estate agent Vanessa Penman. Teape says the trial was very well received and will now become a regular event that will rotate around other council senior-citizen flats in the future, with local pet owner and Devonport Dog Parade organiser Robyn Fond as the main volunteer.

Slime stains seaside suburb sidewalk

Slime and a slippery footpath… the residue from Auckland Transport repair work A muddy and mossy slime mixture has been seeping across the footpath below the new section of the Victoria Rd retaining wall – and it appears to be getting worse as winter hits. When the Flagstaff checked it out last week, a large section of footpath was wet and slippery, making it difficult to negotiate, particularly for children and the elderly. It is also a blot on the landscape just up the road from the retail area visited by thousands of tourists each year, and on the regular route for dozens of children and parents to and from Devonport Primary School. Local resident and mother Donna Gustafson says she has been telling her children to “Watch the slime!” every day for months now on their walk from school. “With the slope of the footpath, I am concerned that should they slip, they would slide onto the road and into the traffic. And there are lots of children walking, scootering

and cycling along that path all day,” she says. Gustafson first noticed the slime during summer and was hoping it would let up. “But now with the wet weather it seems to actually be getting worse,” she says. Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson Mark Hannan told the Flagstaff that AT would be looking at measures to sort the issue out. Hannan says the slimy brown water expelled by two of the drains “is caused by the clay…which is the soil make-up behind the wall. This type of soil is common on the North Shore and non-toxic.” During last year’s reconstruction of the northern section of the retaining wall, 14 drainage pipes were installed along the newly finished retaining wall section “to ensure the integrity of the wall in years to come,” he says. AT did not put the drains underground as Unwelcome souvenir… they inspected the water seepage and judged a pedestrian gets slime it to be clear water, Hannan says. on her shoe

The benefits of choir camp Take 72 singers and put them on a bus and you know you’re in for an entertaining weekend. In early May, the four TGS school choirs headed off to Willow Park Christian Camp. Leonessa (senior girls choir), Sultans of Sing (boys choir) Skat-a-Tak (senior mixed choir), and the Taka Crooners (junior girls choir) were preparing for the upcoming Big Sing in June. The weekend was spent rehearsing in choirs and sections, learning choreography, juggling props and attempting to sing in foreign languages. Andy Song, our Head Boy, said, “From the moment Ms Horder flooded the campsite with the voices of like-minded and motivated teenagers, I

knew that my last year at TGS had just become more memorable”. The students were lucky enough to have some very talented musicians and choir directors visit them to help the choirs and critique their work, such as Ms Virginia Le Cren, Mrs Elliot, Mrs Roe and Mr Cornfield. Thank you all very much for your time and effort.

Head Girl keeps her cool at MUNA Liesbet Vercruyssen was awarded ‘Best speech under pressure’, for her highly anticipated response to the remit ‘Members of the General Assembly are called upon to condemn Russia for its violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine.’ Passionate debate, comical speeches and heartfelt pleas filled the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School hall on the 22nd and 23rd of May, as the annual Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) was attended by around 300 students from all over Auckland. Eight senior students from Takapuna Grammar School took part this year. Augustine Morgan-Guthrie, Hannah Patterson and Liesbet Vercruyssen donned fur, jewellery and lipstick and represented Russia. Ana Renker-Darby, Andy Song and Danielle Desvaux De Marigny wore headscarves to represent Syria, and Gary Qian and Thomas Lunt were the delegates for Somalia. Throughout the day, teams debated various ‘remits’, attended ‘bloc meetings’ and had the option to participate in an impromptu debate. Other controversial remits were based around topics of cyber espionage, ISIS and tax havens. “MUNA was a truly memorable and unique experience; representing Russia was both challenging and eye-opening,” said Augustine Morgan-Guthrie. A great thanks goes to Auckland Rotary for organising the event, and Mrs Hutton for supporting and helping students prepare in the lead-up to the event. By hAnnAh PAtterSon

Overall, the weekend was very enjoyable and the students improved and learnt a lot. A massive thank you to Mrs Cooke and Mr Buckley, who came on the trip, and especially to Ms Horder, our incredibly talented choir director. By AnnekA Sholtz

Riding in the rain

Brisk winds and heavy rain haunted the sleep-deprived parents when the TGS cycling team went ‘on tour’, competing at the North Harbour Junior Tour held by the North Harbour Cycling Club, in the outskirts of Auckland. Over the two days, the students cycled through sub-zero temperatures while their support crew cheered them from the sidelines. “The weekend was a success for everyone especially the first-year riders, being only their second individual race and their first race in the typical Auckland weather,” said Renee Young, an aspiring young cyclist. The cycling team received a total seven of top-three placings. Adam McPheat placed second in the U17 Boy’s general classification with 180 points, while Renee Young, placed third in the U15 Girls general classification with 155 points. The top placings from the tour were held by Adam McPheat, U17 Boys Stage 1- first, and Oscar Elworthy, U17 Boys Stage 2- second. Josh Kench placed third in the U15 Boys division- Stage 1. The girls also had top placings. Elle Wintle, with a second in the U17 Girls Stage 1 and Renee Young was third in Stage 1 and a second in Stage 4, in the U15 Girls division. “The cyclists worked really hard throughout the two days of the tour and cannot wait until the North Islands in July,” says Sharon Davies, TIC of cycling. A night not to be missed

Speak up, Stand together, Stop bullying Pink Shirt Day is a day celebrated worldwide. It’s a day that represents the fight against bullying, along with a school’s ability to stand with those who are victims of bullying. The day originated in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2007 when a boy was bullied at school for wearing a pink shirt. The next day, a group of his friends all wore pink shirts to school, to stand with him and show their intolerance for bullying. At TGS two of the peer support teams; – Peer Leadership Team – and the Peer Sexuality Support Programme (PSSP) – were in charge of the day’s activities. They stood at the entrances to the school and handed out stickers and small pink shirt badges that the students could wear. Earlier in the week, the PLT team had set up a stand in which students could organise for compliments to be sent to other students during form time on Pink Shirt Day. These compliments were delivered on the backs of little pink paper shirts, and the team called them ‘Positive Post-Its’. On the day itself, the PSSP team set up a pledge in the school courtyard, where students could come and sign their names in chalk, and pledge to stop bullying and to stand up for those who are being bullied. Many, many students did so, truly embodying the message of the day, which was to: Speak up, Stand together and Stop Bullying. By JordAn Blum

Devonport’s newest gallery has been set up by a young local artist returning to his roots. It’s hard to find but worth the effort. Emily Tubby spoke to Adam du Preez.

Adding colour to Wynyard St… Adam du Preez in his new gallery

Making Devonport’s art incubator buzz Artist Adam du Preez, faced with the “what now?” uncertainty after graduation, took the plunge and launched a new collaborative creative space in Devonport. “It’s hard coming out of university and deciding what to do with a degree in fine art. With a standard rate of 40% commission being charged to artists selling their work in galleries, I decided to start my own thing; this way I can produce work that I love, such as illustrations, screen printing, and woodwork.” The result is Back Alley Tease (BAT), located down a driveway in the Wynyard St light industrial area, away from slicker galleries on the waterfront or Victoria Rd. But it suits the former Takapuna Grammar student who graduated from Whitecliffe College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2014. Du Preez set up the space aiming to foster young graduates and artists like himself. It includes a range of artistic styles. Growing up in Devonport, du Preez (23) knew that it would be a great location to base himself, and the community has been hugely supportive already, he said. After opening on May 23, a silent auction was held for a live painting, raising funds that were donated to the City Mission. Du Preez is currently planning more fundraisers and each artist will donate to a charity of their choice. Du Preez uses BAT as his work studio and having other artists there as well helps fuel his creativity. Currently the space displays the work of six artists and can fit up to ten. He only charges 10% commission to artists, which goes towards renting the space

Diverse range of artistic styles and holding quarterly exhibitions. “I’m not here to make money out of artists and that’s why it’s aimed towards graduates and artists that are starting out like me.” As well as displaying artwork which the studio has a

screen printer and sells clothing and coconut oils. Older sister Jade du Preez (30) also has artwork in the gallery. The collection of works can be viewed in-store or online at www.backalleytease.co.nz/

Concerned… Depot Artspace Operations Manager Lynn Lawton stands at the intersection of Bartley Terrace and Clarence Street, where he has seen many pedestrians struggling to cross Devonport pedestrians are being placed at risk through unsafe footpaths and road crossings, with funding for the planned Clarence St upgrade disappearing, say local workers. A local board member is concerned that Devonport parking money that had been targeted specifically for the project may have been redirected elsewhere. The regionally funded street “revitalisation” was scheduled for late 2012, to create space for community activities and events, as well as to improve pedestrian safety. But this has now been canned due to cost-cutting. Operations Manager at Depot Artspace Lynn Lawton says that unless pedestrians’ safety on Clarence St is addressed, an accident is likely to occur. “My principle concern is the safety of people accessing what are two iconic community facilities (The Depot and Devonport Community House) that are funded by the council.” “There is a desperate need for a pedestrian crossing”, he says as he has seen many mothers with children struggling to cross the road, he says. “People have lived with it, but there are a number of things that have changed. First of all the traffic in the area has increased and there is a lack of parking, which means that cars circle around all the time.” “The immediate solution would be to put a pedestrian crossing at Bartley Tce and Clarence St. The second one is addressing the lack of footpath access to the council facilities,” Lawton says. “I personally feel that it needs to be done this month, otherwise I think we will have the possibility of a fatality or an injury in the area.” Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member

Dianne Hale says the upgrade was delayed due to wharf improvements, but the board has since been told by Auckland Council that the project will not go ahead. Money for the project was meant to be raised from the Devonport Parking Fund. This was collected over many years from local businesses and project developers. When parking couldn’t be provided, businesses were required to make a contribution to the parking fund, which was intended to be used in the same area that it was collected from. Since Clarence Street has been cut from the schedule, Hale wants to know where the funds – estimated to be around $1 million – will be used. “I’m pretty cross if it has disappeared somewhere else… because the money was budgeted to help that particular project.” Hale says there has been some communication between the transformation team and Auckland Transport, but she says she would find it “frustrating” if the funds were spent outside the area. Auckland Council Manager of City Transformation John Dunshea says that some regionally funded projects were cut from the Long Term Plan. “The Clarence St project, which was regionally funded as part of the Devonport Transformation, was not included in the draft Long-Term Plan. “The Auckland Plan development strategy clearly identifies the city’s growth areas for the next 30 years and under the Long-Term Plan, the council will be initially focusing on these areas,” says Dunshea. Devonport bus services are being reviewed. One of the key proposals is to reroute the Devonport to Takapuna bus along King Edward Parade instead of Victoria Road (through the shops). The Flagstaff asked bus users what they thought.

“That’s not going to help those people at the Devonport shops is it?”

“I think they should keep going up Victoria Road and pick up more people.”

THe navy CommuniTy newsleTTer Good samariTan CPosCs Henry maTanGi Chief Petty Officer Seaman Combat Specialist Henry Matangi, assistant career manager operations, was driving to start work at Devonport Naval Base in May when he noticed a woman on the side of Lake Road at Belmont with a flat tyre. She had a carload of children and was clearly upset and in need of assistance. CPOSCS Matangi stopped to help her. Although traffic was heavy, no one else stopped to help her. Because her car was parked in a precarious location on a busy road, he made sure the kids got out of the car and located them to remain in the nearby bus stop, while he pushed the car into the car park out of the way of the busy Lake Road traffic.

The lady was clearly upset, as she not only had a flat tyre, but had no spare tyre and had her children to look after. CPOSCS Matangi summed up the situation and proceeded to take appropriate measures. He bought some lollies from the dairy to keep the kids occupied while he attended to the flat tyre. He went to nearby car dealers to see if they could provide a tyre and offered money to them if they could. Because he had purchased a car from them, they provided a tyre free of charge. He then changed the tyre and sent the woman happily on her way. By all accounts she was blown away by CPOSCS Matangi’s efforts and was very appreciative.

devonPorT naval Base seCuriTy eXerCise eXerCise, eXerCise, eXerCise! On 25 June, the Navy will conduct an enhanced security exercise at Devonport Naval Base. The exercise will test base security to ensure it is compliant with both military and civilian port requirements. The exercise involves the testing of procedures and increased access requirements to enter the base, including full vehicle inspections.

what does this mean for our devonport community? While it is an internal exercise, the increased access requirements to the base could result in some congestion around the various base entrances, particularly around the Ngataringa Bay entrance. The exercise is scheduled to be completed no later than 6pm. Every effort will be made to minimise any disruptions. We thank you in advance for your patience.

Big-Apple buddies: friends train for NY marathon

CAPTION: Victoria Holtelius (left) and long-time running buddy and friend Sarah Hardy are off running in the Big Apple this November.

Good Times Squared…Victoria Holtelius (left) and long-time running buddy and friend Sarah Hardy are running in the New York marathon this November Running buddies since they met through kindy 12 years ago, Victoria Holtelius and Sarah Hardy now have the New York Marathon in their sights. Their sons Oscar Koller and Fraser Hardy were three-year-olds at Devonport Kindergarten when the mums met. When the Flagstaff caught up with Hardy and Holtelius for morning coffee they arrived from a 10km training run. It is still early days in their preparation for New York and soon their distances will get longer and their alarms go off earlier. “Closer to November, we will have to get up more

around 5 am,” says Holtelius. As their sons became best friends, the mums got chatting and learned that they both liked running. Ever since, they have been running regularly together. “We go out rain or shine, light or dark, and we always meet at the same spot, the roundabout at the bottom of Lake Rd,” Holtelius says. They motivate each other. Says Hardy: “It’s so much easier to stay motivated doing it together. You have to get out of bed because someone is waiting.” Over the years, Hardy and Holtelius have

participated in many smaller triathlons and running events. In 2010, they went to Sydney together, where Holtelius ran her first marathon and Hardy a half marathon. “Since then we have talked and joked about doing New York. We paid our deposit in January and are off for real,” Holtelius says. Hardy says the New York marathon “is probably the biggest challenge I’ve ever signed up for. Victoria is an amazing runner and after 12 years, I am still a plodder. But Victoria chimes in: “I wouldn’t have signed up without Sarah. “Mostly we run for fun and because we like to exercise outside. You can’t beat running around North Head and it’s great to see the city wake up around us,” she says. Hardy and Holtelius run early in the mornings, so they are back home before school drop-offs and work. Holtelius owns the Nord gift shop on Fleet Street and Hardy works as a school nurse at Mt Roskill Grammar and King’s College. And they don’t just run together. “When our kids were at Vauxhall School, we started the ski teams, and we often go to the movies or the theatre together. The last thing we did was go to the Auckland Writers’ Festival,” Holtelius says. Both are already buzzing about the big day in the Big Apple. The New York Marathon is scheduled for November 1, a day after the Rugby World Cup final in England. Hardy and Holtelius hope to run on the wave of a New Zealand win.

Daisy’s basketball skills hot to trot Local basketball player Daisy Eaglesome (12) helped end the Harlem Globetrotters’ nine-year winning streak during their recent New Zealand tour. Her team won a game three-on-three game with the Globetrotters by two points. The Globetrotters, a hugely popular American exhibition basketball team that travels the world, spent two hours with the Auckland Wheel Starz, a wheelchair basketball club Daisy joined in January. “They showed us tricks like how to spin the ball on top of your index finger or how to catch a ball in the back of your neck,” says Daisy. “Then we had a 15-minute-long game, three-on-three, with everyone playing in wheel chairs and we won,” Daisy says. Mum Dianne says it wasn’t because the Globetrotters didn’t try to win. “But they had trouble getting the ball into the net from the chair. So while they would try to get a goal three times, and miss every single time, Daisy’s (team) had no such problems,” she says. Daisy’s team of 10 practises five hours a week with former Wheelbreaker Dave Sherriff. They are scheduled to play Northland and Waitakere soon before heading into a national junior tournament. • Daisy has spina bifida and wears a leg brace for stability and strength on her weaker side. Although she’s not a full-time wheelchair user, she decided to switch to wheelchair

Architects win awards Two Devonport-based architecture firms have been recognised at the Auckland Architecture Awards. Mitchell & Stout won the Public Architecture category, with the new Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in Titirangi, alongside Lopdell House. Salmond Reed Architects took out the Commercial Architecture prize with the Allendale Annexe at Allendale House, the Ponsonby home of the ASB Community Trust. Judges said Mitchell & Stout’s design “provides the village with a new conception of itself.” The Mitchell & Stout renovation of Lopdell House was also acknowledged in the awards’ Heritage category. “Sharp refreshed, and skilfully adjusted to new uses, Lopdell House is now ready to act as a focus of the Titirangi community for a new generation,” the jury said. The judges said Salmond Reed’s Allendale Annexe is “a beautifully built two-storey building. It displays a modesty and restraint appropriate to its occupant and a great respect for its Victorian neighbour.” The Annexe was built alongside, and linked to, a Category One historic building and its ancient stables on a narrow site with major traffic issues.
