Plodding police response to crooks caught on cam Police took 20 hours to respond to a Devonport burglary where the homeowners had caught the crooks on film. Murray Pelham says he arrived at his Victoria Rd home just before 1pm on Wednesday 31 May, minutes after a pair of burglars, clad in hoodies, had smashed a window and taken off with $5000 worth of family possessions. He called police straight away but did not get a response until officers arrived at his house the next morning at 9 am to go over the crime scene – 20 hours after the fact. Murray seemed resigned to the slow response. “To be honest I was surprised they came at all after hearing how low a priority burglaries are for them these days.” Thanks to four CCTV cameras installed by one of his sons a couple of years ago, the Pelhams already had a good idea of how the burglary unfolded. They could watch the burglars staking out the property at 12.30pm, see how they smashed their bedroom window and how, nine minutes later, they carried a large flatscreen TV down the driveway in broad daylight. The pair also stole a PlayStation, laptop, cash, alcohol and jewellery.

Smile you’re on candid camera… the burglars caught on video, but it didn’t spark a quick police follow-up A Facebook warning by Helen Pelham at 3.20pm looked to have had success in locating the burglars later that afternoon. A woman in Campbell’s Bay said she had seen the suspects, but the lead ultimately fizzled. Murray says police did discover a clue while investigating the crime scene. A blood sample was found inside the house. “They somehow must have hurt themselves,” he says.

Chapter ends for long-term Devonport librarians Devonport Library is losing four local icons at the end of the month – librarians Anne Bucholz, Lesley Hawkey, Fiona Startup and manager Sue Parr. The four are among Auckland’s 74 library staff who accepted voluntary redundancy in council’s Fit for the Future programme. June 16 will be a bitter-sweet day for Bucholz, who will celebrate her 30th anniversary of working at Devonport Library. “I am leaving with a lot of regret because I love what I do,” she says. “But I’m old and look forward to doing other things,” she says. For now it’s travelling. “A first trip is planned to Perth to see our daughter, then to Norfolk Island for a reunion of friends, and in September another one to Canada for a week and then to South Carolina to see my brother. But Bucholz promises to not disappear completely. “I love the library and I still will be haunting the place,” she says. For Hawkey, it’s her weekends that will change most. Not working Saturdays and Sundays after 19 years will be “a little strange but I have lots to do at home in the house and garden. I’m involved with the Company Theatre and would like to help out with the new visitor centre across the road,” she says. The multi-talented Startup has been working at the library for around three decades off and on. She is also a co-owner of Bookmark, Devonport’s only remaining second-hand bookshop, and is in the process of creating a public bronze sculpture of the late Benjamin, Devonport’s beloved library cat. “It will be exciting to have more time to bring to fruition some of the many projects I have sparking away in my head. But it is also a bit sad to be leaving the place that has been part of my life since I started there as an 18-year-old,” she says. Parr, who lives in Hillcrest, has been the library’s manager for 19 years off and on and plans to follow her passion for human resources and organisational management in a new job.

Teenager pleads not guilty to careless driving charge The 17-year-old student charged with aggravated careless driving following an accident on Vauxhall Rd has pleaded not guilty. Joe Pearson appeared before a registrar in the North Shore District Court on Wednesday, 31 May. The charge follows a car crashing into a power pole on April 15 causing

a power blackout in much of Narrow Neck that lasted into the following day. Of the four passengers in the car at the time of the accident three were taken to hospital. Their injuries included bruising and a fractured skull, police said. A case review is scheduled at the court for July 18.

Traffic congestion too much for commuting principal

Lake Rd traffic was the final straw for departing Stanley Bay School principal Glen Vinton. After 17 years of commuting to work from Epsom, she is calling it quits. Vinton has been principal in Stanley Bay since 2003 and was the deputy principal at Belmont Intermediate School for three years before that. Her drive home has become the deal breaker. “On a good day it takes me one hour; on a bad day it takes me two,” she says. After crawling up Lake Rd and the Esmonde Rd onramp, she also goes through Spaghetti Junction. “Traffic has increased exponentially over the last five years.” Stanley Bay has faced big changes during her time at its helm. “It has changed from mostly stay-home mums to two-income families. We now have beforeand after-school programmes I wouldn’t have dreamt of at the start.” Vinton is proud of her staff’s innovative approach. “For example, at the moment we are trying to accelerate the learning of at-risk children through what we call ‘front loading’. Instead of catching them up on what they struggle with, we prepare them separately before we go over new material in the classroom.” Vinton plans to join the family business, a supplier and applicator of industrial coatings, located in Penrose, where she will work alongside husband Stuart and son Craig. While she looks forward to more family time, she will miss the community feeling of her school. “It’s like From page 1

Vinton says she and the principals of Devonport Primary School and Vauxhall School were not supportive of the idea of ferrying children across the harbour to school. “We told the ministry it would require a huge commitment from the parents. Plus that our ferries, especially the Stanley Bay one, are pretty unreliable.” The principals’ preferred approach for roll growth was to slide their zones northward. Vinton says the ministry was reluctant to do that for now and would reconsider once the local development expected to occur under the Unitary Plan was actually happening. As a stop-gap-measure, the ministry “told us to take out-of-zone children for now,” she says.

Car crash leaves home without power

Around 2000 homes south of Waitemata Golf Course lost power on Tuesday after a car crashed into a power pole on Lake Rd across from Devonport Fire Station at around 7.15am. Fullers ferries experienced minor delays due to the cut, which put out the Auckland Transport hop card machine on Devonport Wharf. Some queuing ensued after Fullers asked ferry users to buy a one way ticket and claim back the money later. Power was restored just before 9 am. • Police said the driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A Seagulls Luncheon is planned for 21 June with guest speaker Gavin Hastings, who played 61 games for Scotland and six games for the

Peace Garden promoted for former defence land A peace garden at Takapuna Pt to recognise Devonport’s contribution to the Nuclear-free movement was mooted by Devonport-Takapuna local board member Mike Cohen last Saturday. The garden had long been proposed by Devonport Peace Group member Ruth Coombes, who organised a special event at the Depot to coincide with an exhibition to celebrate 30 years since New Zealand became nuclear free. Speaking at the event, Cohen said he hoped

the wider community would get behind the project to reflect the contribution Coombes and many others had made. In 1981 Devonport declared itself nuclear free – the first borough in New Zealand to do so. Devonport a key player in nuclear-free movement Devonport’s prominence in New Zealand’s nuclear-free movement was recognised at a special event at the Depot alongside an exhibition marking 30 years since the government passed laws which set an example for the world. On 8 June 1987 Parliament passed the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms Control Act. Maire Leadbeater, spokesperson for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said Devonport deserved “special recognition” for the part it played in influencing the act. Devonport had a strong environmental movement, which established the first recycling centre in the country and had mounted a successful opposition to the plans to infill Ngataringa Bay. And in 1981 it was the first council to declare itself nuclear-free. Leadbeater also recalled how protesters camped out on Windsor Reserve and Mt Victoria for American ship visits. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Mike Cohen said it was a great shame that former Devonport-Borough councillor Mike Pritchard could not attend the event due to sickness. Pritchard put the nuclear free motion to the council in 1981. Virginia Horrocks seconded it and Trish Joughin, Kelvin Grant and then Mayor Jim Titchener voted in favour. It was a close run thing – four councillors voted against. Richard Tong, who 36 years ago was the administration officer at the council, said Pritchard had been the key person in getting the resolution through. “I may have choreographed the players, but Mike was the master,” Tong said. Other speakers included David Robie, a journalist on the last voyage of the Rainbow Warrior, Ema Tagicakibau, Rev George Armstrong, Bev Cormack, Margaret Lawlor Bartlett, Lynn Hume, and Edwina Hughes. Local choir Village Song sang three pieces: Dona Nobis Pacem, Ka Waiata ki a Maria and Give Us Peace. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff, who was a member of the Labour government which passed the now famous law, said it was a historically significant act which showed the rest of the world that a small country

Don’t expect lateral thinking from AT Thanks for your leader (Flagstaff, 2 June) highlighting the deficiencies in the Auckland Transport presentation to our local board, and your key question, “Where is the blue sky thinking?” Indeed, the peninsula’s problems are more than just about transport. Auckland Council should be addressing the whole townplanning future of Devonport and southern Takapuna before we grind down to gridlock, or an emergency closure of Lake Rd, as was recently experienced. Certainly, enhanced corridors for public and private transport will become ever more critical to handle increases arising from the proposed precinct developments. But it seems we can’t rely on AT to think laterally past Esmonde and Lake roads. Their presentation to the local board had one cryptic reference at the start to “Alternatives”. No mention of a BayswaterBarrys Pt link via Francis St, even though a cycling link is evidently under consideration.

If there was real thinking outside the square (or in this case the bottleneck), a proper planning assessment would include projecting traffic increases from the precinct proposals, as highlighted by the Peninsula Precincts group’s publicity on the Ryman issue. That could include contributions from those developers. The Bayswater ferry service has underutilised capacity and should have priority. On the other hand, what of the future? Some forecasts affirm most of us could be driving electric cars, if not self-guided vehicles, in a decade or two. Will that dilute the problem? All strength to the local board for endeavouring to put the blinkered AT options in perspective. The board deserves our considered support. We should all have our say by submitting on the Draft Local Board Plan, due in by 30 June. John Duder

Francis St link to Esmonde Rd is the answer This is what I have proposed to AT for solving the worsening traffic situation: In relation to the congested Lake Rd between Esmonde Rd and Bayswater Ave, there is only one solution to easing traffic flows – connect Bayswater Ave with Esmonde Rd, using Francis St as part of a link through.The problem lies in the current one-way-in-and-out. Any money spent on Lake Rd, whether it is $10 million or $70 million, will just be

wasted, as the District Plan intends to increase population and most people will want the convenience of a car. Public transport would also benefit from the opening of a “Francis Link”, as the access to Aorangi Bus Station could be direct to and from Devonport ferries. Here is hoping some practical sense can prevail. Ian Ferguson

A fishy tale: many rods and a tiny catch As a person who loves to fish, I take only what I need and the correct size. I have noticed an increase in people fishing with as many as four rods at a time – and the catch being anything from 3cm to 5cm. What on earth would you do with such a small fish? Admittedly they are mostly yellow-eyed mullet, for which there is no legal size limit. However, these fish are part of the food chain. The man I attempted to talk with most recently was unable to respond due to a lack of English language skills, and I was unable to understand him as I could not speak either Mandarin or Cantonese. So I was unable to express my concern about the size of his catch or the number of lines in the water. Or, for that matter, what he intended to do with such infant fish. I would like to see fisherpeople limited to one line per person. Plus a sign in other languages suggesting appropriate size limits. These people obviously love to fish and come over on the ferry, usually set for a day-long fishing excursion. I would like to hear other Devonportians’ thoughts on this issue.

Numbers, words and sport all add up for tax-expert Terry Terry Baucher became hooked on New Zealand after arriving here as a Lions supporter 24 years ago. Since then, he has combined his career in the financial world with his sporting passions – and has also just co-authored his first book. He talks to Maire Vieth. It’s been a frantic three months for Terry Baucher. The end-of-tax-year workload at his consultancy firm in March was followed by six World Masters Games cycle races in April, and then the launch of Tax and Fairness, a book he authored with Deborah Russell, in May – timed to be in book stores before the budget was presented on 25 May. They wrote the short book as a “debate piece” for the general reader, arguing that the nation’s archaic tax system is failing to keep up with economic and social changes, and becoming increasingly unfair in the process. Baucher says the tax regime is particularly unfair on those who save. “Most people didn’t know that their KiwiSaver savings are taxed much more harshly than a house or an investment property.” With 2.7 million New Zealanders contributing billions of dollars each year, the tax system makes KiwiSaver one of the country’s top tax generators, he says. A much smaller number of landlords own nearly double the assets in property but pay considerably less tax, he says. Unless the tax system is changed, this imbalance will increase for future generations. “Many young New Zealanders are unlikely to afford houses but are expected to pay into their KiwiSavers. June 16, 2017 Because of his Northern Irish background, Baucher prefers not to say whether he is Catholic or Protestant. “It ends up defining you and at home it could be a lethal question. Once I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got beaten up because I answered it wrong.” He left Northern Ireland to study at the University of Manchester. He continued to play rugby in England, first for the university, then Manchester Rugby Club, before he suffered a career-ending shoulder injury at the age of 27. He learned to referee, then started to coach. Not having been a natural player helped with coaching, he says. “From when I was 18, I would sit down after every game and write down notes about what I had done right and what I had done wrong. I became quite serious and analytical about it. Deconstructing games like that taught me a lot.” While studying law at university, he enjoyed the tax course much more than his other papers. After graduating, he stumbled into a job with the British tax department, soon switching to an accounting firm. He became a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and qualified as a chartered tax advisor in 1989. Baucher got into cycling as a student – at first as a means of transport. He didn’t get a driver’s licence until he was 26. After his rugby injury, road cycling became his way to stay fit. His first road race was from London to Cambridge in 1988. On his New Zealand trip, he bought a touring bike and cycled around the country, including from Paihia to Whangarei, where he watched the Lions’ first game. From there he cycled to Auckland for the second game against North Harbour. He also rode from Picton to Westport, via the Heaphy Track. “It was when I realised how big New Zealand is and how big its hills are,” he says. Living in Auckland, Baucher resumed road cycling and before long raced around Lake Taupo – first in 1998, and again in 2000

shoulder blade and several ribs, and punctured his lung. “Fortunately I had no head injury but it still took me a long time to come back from it,” he says. He says he got back into cycling properly only two years ago, switching from the road to the track last September. In the lead-up to the World Masters Games in Auckland this year, he trained on the Manukau Velodrome with New Zealand track cyclist Myron Simpson. At the games in April, he was back time trialling on Tamaki Drive. On the track, he competed in the 2km individual pursuit, the 500m individual time trial, the points race, scratch race and sprints, achieving personal bests in all timed races. An avid reader, Baucher admits to recently being distracted by quality TV. “So much so I have set myself a goal to read 18 books this year.” On his list are Robert Harris, Hillary Mantel, Vincent O’Malley and, currently under way, Matt Taibbi’s Insane Clown President. His only ticket for this year’s Lions Tour was for last week’s Blues match. He hasn’t been to a test match since the 2011 Rugby World Cup final. “That game was so intense and such a draining experience, I still have burnout,” he says.

Out and About with your local North Shore MP Member of Parliament – North Shore Minister for Conservation, Arts Culture and Heritage and Seniors

Maintaining heritage values and enhancing the special character of a neighbourhood where new developments are planned is always going to be an important consideration for Devonport. As your local MP, I think that one of the strengths that unite our community is that people care enough about preserving its unique character to make a stand and fight for what they believe is right. Having met with representatives of the Devonport Peninsular Precincts and Ryman Healthcare, I’m very aware that both sides have compromised and negotiated in good faith for an outcome that’s going to benefit our wider community. Along with the Auckland Institute of Architects, they’ve now reached an agreement on how a retirement development that will fit seamlessly into our community. I congratulate all parties on reaching a win/win outcome without needing to go through expensive and divisive court process. This retirement development will benefit our older residents and as the Minister for Seniors I’m pleased we will have age friendly options to stay living on the peninsula. Arguably the traffic congestion is the most contentious and frustrating part of living in Devonport and now the time has come to let Auckland Transport hear your views on Lake Road. They have invited us to make submissions on its three proposed options to fix Lake Road congestion, costed at between $10 and $70 million. Personally, I like the idea of a four lane Lake Road, with one lane used for buses and carpooling vehicles. Feedback from some of my local constituents is clear - until the frequency and affordability of ferries improves and bus routes and timetables are more convenient, our residents are simply not prepared to swap their cars for public transport. We need to find the right mix of public transport, and private car use on Lake Road with safe options for walking and cycling. Carpooling makes sense and a designated lane would be a powerful incentive to coordinate travel arrangements. Consultations are now open at www.at.govt.nz to put your voice on record.

My portfolio responsibilities overlap sometimes as they did recently when artist Fiona Pardington joined me at The Officers Mess in Narrow Neck when I relaunched DOC and Creative New Zealand’s ‘Wild Creations’ which aims to connect artists with conservation. It gives a grant of up to $36,000 to three artists to create art about our native species and I’d encourage creative local artists to apply, go to www.creativenz. govt.nz/find-funding/funds/wild-creations for more information. Fiona has already made a significant contribution to heightening awareness of threatened species. I cherish her photograph of a single white tipped huia feather which is in pride of place on my wall at home to remind me as the Minister of Conservation of the weight of responsibility that when we lose a species, it’s gone forever. The artwork produced will directly support several key DOC objectives including Predator Free 2050. We now have 9 DOC Predator Free 2050 rangers around NZ and our local Auckland based one is Art Polkanov. The local rangers will help communities with their specific Predator Free 2050 goals. Any schools, businesses, church or community volunteer groups will be able to access the expert knowledge straight from DOC with funds, traps and strategies available to our area tailored to help us tackle the pests that trouble us in Devonport. I’ll be hosting a series of public meetings in the coming months to outline how Predator Free rangers can help Devonport groups take predator eradication to the next level. Model UN in the classroom More than 50 local students excitedly gathered in the TGS Library for a small-scale Model UN assembly known as the “Classroom Model UN”. Unlike other larger-scale events, this provided a non-competitive environment to allow delegates to freely voice their opinions to others. The first part of the day was spent equipping students with the fundamental knowledge and understanding of how Model UN works. This ensured that everyone gained the full experience of intensive debating and strategic lobbying. Delegates were separated into two committee sessions for the amendment phase. This was the perfect opportunity to express a country’s view on controversial global topics such as the status of refugees. At midday, students were re-energised by a lunch break with pizza.

The second part of the day involved all delegates coming together for the Plenary to debate an impromptu topic. Compared to the morning session, students felt more comfortable and confident to speak, allowing the amendment phase to run smoothly. “The event was really well organised and felt very professional. It was a really enjoyable experience as I got to meet new people and learn more about how the UN works, all the while having lots of fun,” said Dougal Burden.

TGS Model UN high school ambassadors Cynthia Lu and Kate Lee found it extremely rewarding to see such success in the event. They felt that collaborating with Rosmini College and Carmel College demonstrated what a real Model UN assembly would be like. The purpose of the event was to help develop skills of public speaking, as well as confidence. Both TGS students thought that was deeply accomplished. BY KATE LEE

It featured the work of talented local artists and TGS students and focused on the concepts of femininity and regrowth. The second and final event they are holding is on Saturday the

Pink Shirt Day

Bullying is a problem that occurs worldwide. Many children, teens, and even adults suffer from being bullied for things that our society should just be able to accept. Pink Shirt Day is a globally celebrated event in which people around the world stand up against bullying. It originated in Canada, in 2007, when a boy suffered from being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. Two students ‘took a stand’ against the homophobic bullying and the next day many students showed up to school wearing pink shirts. At the end of May, our students held a pink shirt day in which

students could wear a pink shirt to school in order to show their support of the cause. In the days leading up to the event, the prefects set out a table where students could come and write compliments to be delivered to their friends, siblings, or even lovers on the Friday. On the day, at the front gate, stickers were handed out as students entered the school grounds. Showing up in pink on the day showed how many students were willing to support the victims of bullying as well as standing up against the ones who do the bullying. BY MELISSA EVERETT

Speaking out for teens Public speaking is often considered to be some people’s greatest fear but this certainly did not appear to be the case for the finalists of the Senior Speech Competition in late May. The finalists, seven Year 12 and 13 students, provided exciting and entertaining speeches with ‘messages for teenagers’. The finalists were: Barnaby Watts, Daniel Howie, Harvey Merton, Jarrah Swift, Kate Lee, Saffie Doughty and Zoe Drake. The school Sports Hall was packed with a humming hive of eager anticipation as the contestants waited to take the stage. Guest judges, the Principal, Mrs Mary

Nixon, and the Director of International students, Mr Terry Holding, had an extremely difficult task. Impressive speeches from Zoe Drake with her topic of mental illness, and Jarrah Swift, with his topic on the environment, tied for First equal. Following in third place was Kate Lee, who even added a juggling act at the beginning of her speech. “The senior speech competition was an incredible learning experience for me. The Boys 1st XI has been promoted to the Super City grade, the Boys’ 2nd XI to Grade 2 and the Boys’ 3rd XI stay in their current grade, but placed 3rd in their pool. The Girls’ 1st XI go into Grade 1A, Girls 2nd XI into Grade 2 and Girls 3rd XI remain in Grade 5 but are also sitting 3rd in their pool. FROM THE GYM: Harrison Smith recently competed in a trampolining event in Melbourne, Australia. Harrison had an awesome week with the NZ team, taking out a silver medal in the Under-15 Men’s Double Mini Trampoline event. FROM THE COURT: Daisy Eaglesome recently competed in the NZ Women's Wheelchair Basketball Challenge Tournament and won the 'Player of the tournament' cup. Her team also won the 3x3 competition and the 5x5 game.

TGS cricket had a strong opening season 90 years ago Takapuna Grammar (TGS) is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. And 1927 was also TGS Cricket’s foundation year. The 1927 TGS magazine records the establishment of a First XI, and an impressive first season, featuring the scalps of MAGS and Technical College, missing an outright two-day win over Auckland Grammar by only 7 runs. Ironically, the report laments “Takapuna’s lack of a really good bowler”, not foreseeing that 1st XI Captain Jack “Bull” Cowie would go on to play for Auckland and New Zealand, and establish a reputation as one of the country’s greatest ever fast bowlers “As soon as possible after the opening of the school, a cricket meeting was held, at which Cowie was elected captain. Only one team was entered – in the A grade of Junior Secondary Schools' Competition. The first match of the 1927 season – v. Mt. Albert B – proved to be an exciting game, Takapuna winning by one run. O'Brien (31) and Ferguson (14) were the most successful with the bat, while the bowling honours were shared by Foster (2 for 7), O'Brien (2 for 11), and W. Macindoe (2 for 15). In the second match, we were again successful, defeating Kowhai by 79 runs to 64. Ferguson (28) and Young (15) played useful innings, while O'Brien (4 for 27) and Warren (4 for 16) trundled consistently. Our next opponents, however, proved too strong for us. Takapuna compiled 82 runs (Cleal 39, not out, Warren 11), while Sacred Heart replied with 118, Rodgers, Muir and Ireland being difficult to dislodge. Takapuna's lack of a really good bowler was never more apparent, although O'Brien (3 for 12) and W. Macindoe (3 for 21) secured good averages. Technical College were not difficult to dispose of for 36 runs (Cowie 6 for 12, O'Brien 3 for 4 and Young 1 for 2). Takapuna compiled 52 runs (Foster 11, W. Macindoe 10, Ferguson 10), thus winning comfortably by 16 runs. The next match, too, resulted in an easy win for Takapuna: Auckland Grammar B could not stand up to the slow bowling of Morrison (5 for 12), and their innings produced a meagre 24. Macindoe (10), were our chief run-getters, while Cowie (9 for 18), O'Brien (3 for 4), Young (1 for 2), W. Macindoe (4 for 16) and Dance (2 for 4), were our best bowlers. Our next opponents, Auckland Grammar A, were easily defeated by 91 runs on the first innings. Takapuna ran up a total of 121, Cleal 24, Cowie 21, W. Macindoe 17, and Blamires 15, reaching double figures. In their first innings, Auckland Grammar replied with 30 (Cowie 2 for 4, Blamires 3 for 9, Dance 2 for 7, Young 1 for 4). Their second innings produced 98, thus averting an innings' defeat by the narrow margin of 7 runs. Our most successful bowlers were Dance (1 for 7), Cowie (4 for 40), and W. Macindoe (2 for 24). On the following Saturday, as a result of two innings, Takapuna defeated Mt. Albert A by 8 runs. Takapuna made 59 and 52 as against Mt. Albert's 57 and 46. Cowie (29 not out), Young (17), and Cleal (16) batted well, while Morrison (2 for 4), W. Macindoe (4 for 16), Cowie (3 for 15) and O'Brien (6 for 29), bowled consistently.

The return match with Mt. Albert B brought us our second defeat. Mt. Albert scored 93 runs against the bowling of Cowie (3 for 8), Dance (2 for 5) and O'Brien (3 for 22). Takapuna replied with 61 (Young 14, Poster 11, Dance 10), which was 32 runs short of Mt. Albert’s total. In the last match of the season, Takapuna defeated Kowhai by 77 runs. Takapuna knocked up 116 runs (Ferguson 36, W. Macindoe 22 not out, Cleal 16, O'Brien 11), while Kowhai’s innings produced only 39 against the bowling of Cleal (3 for 1), Warren (1 for 2), Dance (1 for 4), Macindoe (1 for 3) and O'Brien (3 for 13). On the whole, the 1927 season was a very successful one. Of the nine club matches played, we won seven and lost two (v. Sacred Heart and Mt. Albert B).”

Community mission: rugby leavers off to Samoa with Buck and container

Not your usual rugby trip… North Shore junior players are taking a container full of goods with them to Samoa Around 35 young Devonport rugby players are turning their leavers’ trip to Samoa into a humanitarian mission. And they are taking former All Black captain Buck Shelford along for the ride. For a second time North Shore Rugby Club’s Year 8 players are going to Lotopue (in July) to mark the end of their junior playing careers by playing two games on the island – against the village team and the Rugby Samoa Academy. But this time round they are taking it up a notch. “A rugby tour is easy to do. This is a bit harder and a bit better,” says J1 grade coordinator and coach Ashley Cooper. Last year’s leavers donated a lawn mower to the village. This year, the players are not only sending a container full of supplies, they will leave the container behind. The container was donated by club member Paul Glass and his company Devon Funds Management, Cooper says. The villagers will convert it into a shop, bike hirage and storage shed. “We are here to give the village something to support itself, to make them more sustainable,” Cooper says. And to top the trip off, the leavers are bringing a former All Black along. “Buck Shelford has run Buck’s Book Camp for years and the money raised from it usually goes towards the leavers’ trip. So this year we are taking him with us to thank him for it,” says Cooper. The club is busy trying to fill up the container with donated goods that are needed in the small village on Samoa’s eastern coast. Sports gear, school clothing, bikes, tools, and the like are being collected, with a full list on the club website. The wider community can donate as well. Devonport’s rugby club was first introduced to the island village by Lotopue High Chief Malu Tu’isila, who invited the players

Never mind the garage bands, here’s Shed Two years after their first gig, Takapuna Grammar band Shed have released their first EP, titled Passive on Parade. The EP’s five original songs offer a musical mix of styles. Bass guitarist Ben Jones says: “We are a rock and blues band, but write a lot of our own material, which is drawn from many influences.” Most of the six-piece belong to the school jazz band and recently played in the school production of Grease. Only vocalist and lyricist Bijoux Nortje doesn’t attend the school, having left last year. The EP, available on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud and Youtube, appears to have found an audience. In the last week of May, it rated top of the national “Heatseeker” chart for fastest-rising titles outside the Top 20 local albums. Nortje says the title is a dark comment about political correctness and censorship. “It’s about the conservative media watching people like a big brother so they won’t do anything out of the ordinary or against the grain. It’s critical but also quite tongue in cheek.” The band recorded the EP at the Hauraki home studio of Takapuna Grammar student Harry Charles. A Hand Full of Daisies by Rose Judson The winner of the 7-to-9-year-old category of the Tell a Story competition run by Paradox Books is Rose Judson. The judge, author and artist Lotte Wotherspoon, was impressed with Rose’s grasp of narrative and liked the way the story uses water to move from the idyllic to the horrific. “Once in a land full of rose bushes and pretty cottages was a girl who had always wanted to explore the great seas. However, her father was strict and didn’t let her go further than the river across the meadows. One morning, when Sophie was in bed, she heard her father shouting, “Come down to the kitchen and make some breakfast!” Sophie got out of bed and slowly opened her creamy white curtains. She gazed out into the dark woods. The trees all swayed in the wind. They looked like witches’ broomsticks pressed into the ground. Sophie slowly dragged herself down the hallway and into the kitchen, and made herself some porridge. “Father...,” Sophie said, “…why can’t I...” “I hope you’re not talking about the sea because you know the answer,” he interrupted. She sighed and carried on with eating. After her breakfast, she went out onto the field. She would usually take a hand full of daisies and throw them around the field, but today she didn’t. She just got her sketchbook out and sketched the pearly-pink waterlilies floating on the pond. As she was sketching she noticed some thin logs by the

river. They gave her a brilliant idea. The next day she cut some flax from the bushes by the river. “I can use that to weave onto the logs,” she thought. Finally, a week or so went by. She had finished the raft. She carefully hopped onto it and floated gently down the lake. It was so peaceful she accidentally dozed off. Ten minutes passed. Sophie’s eyes snapped open. She found herself stranded on the side of the river. As she sat there, she heard faint flute music. Every step she took it grew louder. She could see a boy with golden blonde hair, crouched up, leaning against a tree. He was playing a flute. She stood there, just listening to him. Suddenly she saw a flash of green eyes, looking at her. She felt like running back home but she couldn’t move an inch. He raised his eyebrows as if he had never seen another person before. “What are you doing here?” he whispered underneath his breath. “Nothing” Sophie said shyly. Then she blurted out that she wanted to explore the sea but her father wouldn’t let her so she had decided to explore down by the river. “I could take you,” he said, “but it’s a long

way away… and plus, the Germans will be here soon, dropping bombs over our town.” “Oh,” she said disappointedly. “My father never tells me news about anything. I’d better be going home, but I’ll meet you here tomorrow morning,” she said. She ran home and crept into bed. The next morning, she woke up excited. She ran across the meadow, but when she got to the river she heard people screaming, “Help! Help! They’re here! The bombs are dropping!” She remembered the boy had said the Germans would be coming soon but she was determined to see the ocean. She got to the same tree where she had seen the boy. He wasn’t there. She tried to run back to her home but it was no use, she couldn’t find the way back. She heard people screaming and the sound of footsteps in the forest. She couldn’t see people through the trees but she could hear the screams. She felt like curling up and weeping. A-maze-ing volunteers wanted

Glenda Bostwick and Heather Ann McConachy are looking for volunteers to help them prepare the Ngataringa Maze for its 25th birthday. In 1993, Bostwick was the council parks officer in charge of setting up Ngataringa Park on the former Devonport tip. McConachy was

the landscape architect who designed the maze that was built by PD workers. The two have remained friends since and are returning to the maze as volunteers keen to spruce it up. Creating a fern ground cover alongside the now established original plantings is one of McConachy’s many plans. “Twenty-five years ago we planted what we hoped was a symphony orchestra and got a chamber music group. It’s time to fix that,”

Appellants pleased with revised blueprint Mediation over the sprawling Ryman’s retirement complex planned for Ngataringa Rd has led to a range of changes that help to soften its visual impact. The changes to the originally consented village reduce its bulk by breaking three large buildings at the western end of the site into six smaller buildings around a large courtyard. A major building at the centre of the complex has been reconfigured to reduce the length of unbroken wall facing onto Ngataringa Rd. And the height of the village skyline, when viewed from the south, has been lowered, reducing its visual intrusiveness. The height of the tallest building is lowered from six to five levels. The Devonport Peninsula Precincts Society, established in response to the first Ryman plan, launched an appeal to the Environment Court. It was settled after mediation and agreement over a revised proposal, details of which were released last week. The society was concerned the original proposal did not ensure a mix of building heights or variation of form when viewed from nearby streets, parks and houses. It is happy that “greater porosity” is

provided across the site under the new plan. “The community should be proud of the significant remedies it has achieved through its appeal,” says society spokesperson Iain Rea. “I’m particularly proud that the agreed layout emphasises the village’s orientation to the street on its northern sunlit boundary.” The society accepted expert advice that the new plan was a good outcome for both local and village residents. “This decision sends a clear a message to the council that the approval under the Unitary Plan of Ryman’s initial plans was wrong,” says Rea. “Council approved exactly what they proposed.” More than 300 submissions were made to the Commissioners Hearing Panel opposing the original application. The society plans to follow closely the development of other precincts on the Devonport peninsula. It says that “loose planning controls that allow poor-quality design and inappropriate development to proliferate” will be under scrutiny. With excavation for the project now expected to start in October, heritage advocates are promising to remain vigilant over heritage features that may be affected.

The consent requires that prior to any development works a formal archeological excavation must be done of heritage features related to the Duder Brickworks that once stood on the site.

New Allen Hill upgrade proposal on the table Hybrid fields, with artificially reinforced natural grass, have replaced astroturf in the latest council proposal to upgrade the soccer pitches at Allen Hill Stadium. The revised proposal also includes additional car parks on the grounds, a clubhouse, changing rooms and public toilets. An additional stadium entrance has been added at the Ngataringa Park access road to the garden centre, community garden and recycling centre. Floodlights 18m in height remain in the plan. The upgrade aims to increase the time North Shore United’s (NSU) 1000 playing members can use the stadium from 15 to 30 hours per week through hardier pitches and artificial lighting. Two years earlier, council had proposed to build two $2.4 million astroturf pitches to take the playing time up to 50 hours a week for the club but neighbouring residents, concerned about increased noise and traffic, opposed those plans. The hybrid fields are a cheaper option but the budget is still the same: the surplus will be spent on carparking. To find a compromise between the club’s needs and the neighbours’ concerns, council set up a working party with staff, soccer club members and the neighbours in August 2016. The party has been meeting regularly since and council has conducted traffic surveys and noise recordings requested by the neighbours. But a happy middle ground has yet to be found. “Allen Hill Neighbourhood Group is opposed to any field upgrade or increase in field use at Dacre Park,” the council proposal says. “Allen Hill Neighbourhood Group does not accept the finding of the specialists.” Council’s Principal Sports Parks Advisor Grant Jennings writes: “It appears that an agreed outcome will not be reached and that

Allen Hill is currently the home training and playing ground for the club’s 300 First Kicks (five to eight) players and the club’s 10 senior teams. However, 450 youth and junior players train away from home, at Stanley Bay Park, Fort Takapuna, Bayswater Park and Belmont Intermediate School. Three of those fields are in such bad condition that they are shut for the rest of the winter, says NSU club secretary Steve Browning. “Stanley Bay is a bog and shut for the rest of the season. Fort Takapuna, shut, BIS, shut,” he says.

“We have home games at Onepoto, Greville or QBE. Eveyone is leaving Devonport for their home games in every junior grade. We have training in Bayswater and been told by council we are overusing it.” With the proposed hybrid pitches, some of the junior players could be brought home, he says. “We could have three of their games going on before the seniors take over. The reality is that it has been here since the 1970s as an active sports park. “The Local Board should want to maximise the park’s value for the community and we as a club will do our utmost to minimise the impact on our neighbours.”

North Shore United joins global club football first As the country’s oldest football club, North Shore United (NSU) has joined the international Club of Pioneers, a network of the oldest continuing football clubs around the world. Founded by Sheffield FC, which was founded in 1857 and is the world’s oldest soccer club, the Club of Pioneers has currently 15 members, says NSU President Andrew Gore. With a birthday year of 1887, NSU is the ninth-oldest club member, and the only other member in the Southern Hemisphere. Club President Andy Gore says that thanks to a well-documented club history of 130 years, it was easy to prove NSU’s authenticity to join the international firsts.

Longtime North Shore United member and current club president Andy Gore was there and remembers the volunteers’ grunt work between 1978 and 1981. “We had about 600 members then and our plan was to have two fields with a running track around them but funding wasn’t available so we did what we could,”

he says. “Some members in the club had equipment and brought diggers down. Others just came with their shovels. Every Sunday from 9 to 1 we had a working bee and you would get 20 or 30 people. “The whole brick works was basically taken down by hand over a couple of years, retaining walls were put up and the field was dug and then built up.

“It took us nearly four years to get playing. We had our first game in 1981. And even then it was pretty barren still,” he says. In 1980, the club set up a clubhouse. “It was an old prefab building that had served as Takapuna Grammar’s music room. Later we tacked on half a church hall from Belmont. That was our temporary clubroom in 1980 and it still is,” Gore says.
