Quay stone cop-out – Maori anchor stone made in China The stylized Maori anchor stone installed during the Marine Square upgrade was made in China – after Iwi let slip the chance to design and build it. The stone sits within the wall along the boardwalk that leads up to the new entrance

of the Devonport Wharf building. The concept of an anchor stone for a waka had been developed in consultation with iwi through the project’s design phase from 2009 until 2012, says Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson Mark Hannan.

“Following further consultation with iwi in 2013, we invited six mana whenua groups to tender for the detailed design and construction of the anchor stone. Unfortunately there was no response from iwi,” he says. To page 7

Repair work to wharf before it has even been completed Hairline cracks have appeared in the concrete surface of the recently repaired Victoria Wharf. Auckland Council officers have investigated and have already moved to repair the new concrete with injections of epoxy. The wharf is being managed by Auckland Council parks department. A senior manager, Martin van Jaarsveld, said: “the issue with cracking was not uncommon.” Repair work was under way for a few cracks that exceeded the allowable width of 0.3mm to 0.4mm. “In the original pour area, the major works where they exceeded the level, we are injecting a special epoxy to penetrate the deck slab to these areas.” “For other areas of the deck, several repair options are currently being tested for the treatment of cracks in excess of 0.25mm,” van Jaarsveld said. The repair work is expected to be finished by mid-May. Council did not provide the cost of the repairs to the Flagstaff before our print deadline. The budget for the overall repair of Victoria Wharf was $6 million.

On the ground in Nepal – a fragile country devastated Devonport Humanitarian worker Prue Smith survived the massive earthquake in Nepal unscathed but her first thoughts were for the local people. “The worst is yet to come - there are major problems with power, there will be food and water shortages and outbreaks of disease,” said Smith, who is general manager of the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust. Speaking to the Flagstaff from Kathmandu two days after the quake hit, Smith said the usually chaotic city was eerily quiet. With the death count from the earthquake set to rise above 4000 many of the survivors were spooked and staying at home as aftershocks continued. Smith had been visiting Himalayan Trust schools and health facilities in the Everest watershed, but was in the capital having “a cuppa” with a colleague in a courtyard at the Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel when the quake struck. “There were about 30 people in the courtyard and there was a big shake and we looked at each other and it just kept going and going.” The group decided the safest place to go was the nearby guest-house carpark. They sheltered there for the next six hours and were joined by dozens of others. The next night Smith was lucky enough to get a bed in a nearby hotel. “I was four floors up which I was a bit worried about but I felt safe.” While many services were down – there was no television, radio or local cell phone cover-

age and internet was patchy – Smith said the response to the disaster had been good. Indian planes with food and rescue dogs had arrived promptly. Water trucks were driving round the city with people taking bucketloads back to their homes. Flights were still leaving Kathmandu but there were queues of 150 metres at the check-in counters, Smith said. Rain was falling at night, which made conditions very difficult for the thousands sleeping outside. The long-term devastation though was immense. Older brick buildings and walls had crumbled and fallen. And Smith understood that a school and hospital Sir Edmund Hillary had built 50 years ago was Feeling heartbroken for the Nepalese largely devastated. people…Prue Smith Smith was due to leave Kathmandu on Wednesday (as had been pre-booked) “Our work will now have to be completely and was to arrive in Auckland on Friday. reassessed.” Much of its focus now is likely to Sir Edmund founded the Himalayan Trust be rebuilding what it had already created. in 1960 wanting to improve the living condiDonations to the Himalayan Trust can be tions of Sherpa in the Himalayas. By Rob Drent Keeping the Bastards Honest is a new investigative journalism fund launched by the Flagstaff this month. We have noticed over the years that the number of substantive reports coming through council to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board have become less and less. There is also a marked lack of early engagement between the Government and Devonport residents, particularly on land issues that affect the area. We want to be more proactive in getting hold of the information on the spending and decision-making processes council and government bodies want to keep from

the public. The trouble is that it comes at a not unsubstantial cost. The bill for our Official Act Information (OIA) request to Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) for documents over the sale of the Bayswater Marina reclamation was $350. And this was a relatively straightforward request. We have four OIA requests in the system at the moment and are expecting bills of between $400 to $1000 for each request to be actioned. With the furore over the planned axing of the Campbell Live current affairs show, and the subsequent surge in public support for the programme, we thought we would turn things on their head. Through the Keeping the Bastards Honest fund, local people can contribute directly to an increase in the freedom of information available to our community and the accountability of Government and Auckland Council. The Flagstaff is paid for by advertising and delivered for free so we hope people will contribute – a grass-roots response to keeping democracy alive and kicking. Every dollar will go towards Keeping the Bastards Honest. Our initial target is $2000. You can contribute online through Kickstarter at www.kickstarter.com/projects/1006125242/keeping-the-bastardshonest, or google Kickstarter Devonport Flagstaff.

The Flagstaff was strolling along the waterfront and snapped this picture near the new Marine Square upgrade. While local young women Laura Eaton (left) and Molly Rowlandson were offering a friendly smile to arriving tourists, I wonder what visitors thought of the rubbish bin welcoming party behind them. Auckland Council said they had no knowledge of the bins and referred us to Auckland Transport, who did not get back to us by press time. Really I suppose it doesn’t matter who is responsible; the bins should be tucked away out of sight. The bins are visually polluting an area that ratepayers have paid thousands of dollars to beautify.

Car theft spree continues

Car thefts are on the rise – with three Devonport victims in a week. The Flagstaff spoke to them. Michael Powell had his Toyota Land Cruiser stolen from Shoal Bay Rd on the night of April 14/15. On waking, Powell found a different car in the spot he remembered parking in the night before. “I took a step back. I couldn’t quite fathom it,” he says. The emerald-green 1999 Prado model had been locked and alarmed. “That car is built like a tank. They got in through the alarm and hotwired it, so they are quite astute at what they do. I had a lot of tools and equipment in there,” he

says. He had bought the Land Cruiser to replace his old work vehicle, which he was now fixing up again to use, he said. Sarah Crooks had her Subaru Legacy stolen from Northumberland Ave on the night of April 15/16. The car was parked just 15m from her bedroom. The 1998 silver/champagne turbo wagon had many of Crook’s possessions inside, including precious items belonging to her late father. “The car had distinguishing stickers on the boot and the back left and right rear windows,” she says. Kate Joyce had the family’s Mazda Athena

stolen from outside her Rutland Rd home on the night of April 22/23. A family car with roof racks and child seat, it was bought five years ago second hand by the Joyces, a one-car family. “We didn’t hear a thing and neither did two of our neighbours I spoke to,” says Joyce. North Shore car thefts for February jumped from 42 in 2014 to 72 in 2015. March and April figures were not yet available, but the trend looks set to continue. Inspector Sunny Patel said all types of car were stolen. “The thieves are mainly opportunists.…vehicles targeted are left unsecure by their owners and/or have items that are in plain view.”

Vic offers free arts performances

The Vic is offering local artists the chance to perform at the Victoria Theatre for free. In a joint initiative between the Victoria Theatre Trust and manager Philipp Jaser, performers will have the chance to stage a one-night live event at the Vic, free of charge. Three nights are being offered this year to three separate groups or performers to stage a musical, theatrical or dance event. The costs of venue hire as well as technical and staff costs will be covered by the board and management. Manager Philipp Jaser said he wanted to

give something back to the community, which has supported the theatre so well for the last four years. “We also want to encourage groups who would not normally be able to take the risk of putting on a show at the Vic,” he said. Board co-chair Margot McRae said the Vic is a popular venue for live acts but they want to give emerging performers a chance to work in a wonderful theatre. “We have great new facilities for live events now with a performers’ toilet and shower and improved stage lighting, but such a theatre is

often out of reach of many live performers,” she said. The subsidy is in line with the Trust’s aim of encouraging and promoting live performance at the theatre. Preference will be given to non-commercial performers or groups who are locally based, and the event must be held on a weeknight evening, outside of school holidays. Applications to the Vic close on 24 May. For information about applications and the selection process contact: philipp.jaser@thevic.co.nz

Mike’s last hurrah before chair changeover Bayswater’s Mike Cohen chaired his last Devonport-Takapuna Local Board meeting in front of a full house last Tuesday after an 18-month stint in charge. Council chambers were crammed with almost 80 people attending an item on the Takapuna Beach Holiday Park, and another 20 in the hallway unable to be get in due to firesafety regulations. Cohen will next month be replaced by board member Joseph Bergin from Takapuna, who will be in the chair for the second half of the three-year term. Bergin acknowledged Cohen’s achievements as chair, saying he had a gift for attending meetings and that he suspected a cloned version allowed Cohen to be in multiple places at the same time.

Grant Gillon praised Cohen’s “commitment to democracy” and said he had been instrumental in the board setting up new workshop-style sessions, which meant an end to holding meetings behind closed doors. In his final report, Cohen said he had “always wanted a bottom-up approach” and enjoyed working with “robust partners” in the community. “Unless people feel they can influence what happens in their street and neighbourhood, that Musical chairs… Mike Cohen in they can make a difference, they will become his last meeting before the chair apathetic and not participate with us at the transfers to Joseph Bergin coalface of local government,” he said. Cohen said that before the board’s workshops were made open to the public: “the perception existed that the decisions were made (in the secret workshops) and rubber-stamped when they were voted on at the public board meeting later.”

Lake Road top of the worry pops

Congestion on Lake Road is the number-one concern of local residents who gave feedback on the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board’s Draft Long-Term Plan. Eighty four per cent of the ressponses said they wanted the board to work on traffic congestion solutions. The 12% who were not in support said Lake Road users should be encouraged to use public transport instead. Submitters responded with conviction on other questions as well. • 73% of respondents support the construction of the Torpedo Bay Walkway ($265K).

• 65% support a new ferry terminal in Bayswater. • 63% support heritage protection. • 60% support the retention of library hours instead of a weekly reduction of three and a half hours. According to the report, questions on increased chemical spraying and the removal of street gardens and planting others with perennials did not receive enough submissions to ensure a robust analysis. More than 1500 locals submitted to the draft plan, representing 6% of the population, the report said.

Devonport Community Coordinator gets budget boost After years of running on the smell of an oily rag, the budget for Devonport’s Community Coordinator has been almost doubled. Last week, the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board voted to increase the position’s budget from $82,486 in 2015 to $140,000 for each of the next three years, while also consolidating the position’s operating, programme and event budgets. The new budget breaks down as $90,000 for operating expenses (up from $50,000), $20,000 for the Summer and Winter Fun programmes (up from $9,000) and $30,000 for community events (up from $23,500) such as Devonstock, the Scotty Brewer Skate Day, Community Treasure Hunt and Halloween Bike Trail. Auckland Council’s rationale for the increase is that Devonport Community Coor-

dinator Maria Teape currently spends around 125 hours each year preparing multiple funding applications, “rather than on the primary work of community coordination,” a report said. Board chair Mike Cohen said he “shuddered” at the cost of applying for all the different grants. It also took a lot of time for the council staff who have to assess the many applications. “Do we want them to do community development stuff or to fill out funding applications?” he asked. Manager Community Development and Partnership North Karen Johns told the board the increase was partially a move “to get council budgets into the hands of a community organisation” as part of a new “community-led community development” approach.

Local Heritage Awards established

Three annual heritage awards have been created for the Devonport-Takapuna area. An all-Devonport panel of Paddy Stafford-Bush, Rod Cornelius and Jeremy Salmond will decide the three new Heritage Award trophies to be given out annually, starting in 2016. The awards, established by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, will recognise heritage commitment of individuals, conservation projects and educational heritage projects. They are open to individuals and organisations. The three panellists have been tasked with identifying the criteria for the awards, shortlisting finalists and selecting the winners. Paddy Stafford-Bush, a former chair of the Devonport Community Board, helped introduce heritage guidelines in the North Shore District Plan and currently chairs council’s North Shore Heritage Trust. Rod Cornelius, a local historian, was a founding member of the Devonport Museum in 1979 and served as its president for 25 years. In 2010, he received a Queen’s Service Medal for services to local heritage. Jeremy Salmond is a renowned heritage architect. In 2007, he received a Queen’s Service Order for preservation of significant historic New Zealand buildings. The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board committed $5,000 annually to the awards.

Mourning loss of one tree but concern over wider threat nowadays, to the golden rule: them with the gold makes the rules. Trees are problematic. They are, very often, in the wrong place, a nuisance, and an expensive bother to maintain. But we do have a duty of care to maintain and retain them, especially those of (by New Zealand standards) venerable age and size. Because they are irreplaceable; you can knock down a 100-year-old house and rebuild an exact replica in six months. Not so a 100-year-old tree. Without them our landscapes and streetscapes are lesser places. In case this letter thus far sounds pragmatic, albeit a little bitter in tone regarding the felling of this tree, I want to say I am truly heart-sick and heartbroken at its loss. This was a beautiful tree; it gave grace, softness and shade and beauty and made a very ordinary street lovely. Two little grey herons nested in it. It gave time to the passing of the seasons and the

So another tree is gone in Cheltenham. This one is the huge 100-year-old oak in Tui St. It had become too huge and threatened property and life. I believe the owners agonised for a year before making their final decision. What a pity for all it was such a permanent decision. The garage won. The removal of protection of trees has opened the floodgates. Owners can now, without any fear of prosecution, fell that tree, which privately has been a bugbear for years. All on the advice of trained aborists of course. One hopes the owners of the oak sought more than one opinion. It’s my cynical view however, that arborists will tell the client just exactly what the client wants to hear. It would seem very few are prepared to actively advocate to save a tree, when the clients plainly prefer it gone. I guess it comes down, like so much else

years. It had history. And now it’s gone. It should know that if there is no one else, one person at least, grieves and mourns its loss. Maggie Sotheran

Library toilets success point to wider loo shortage Thank heavens for positive Devonport folk like Mary Anne Evans-Frank (April 2) and Karren Beanland (March 19). What a contrast their enthusiasm for our wonderful new library was to the frankly tiresome comments of some library critics; one or two of whom have the latent racism within elements of our opinionated community. Let’s get real, folks. Have we forgotten already that the old library had no toilets, forcing users in need of a comfort stop to take their chances with the grotty public toilets next door – as well as getting wet going there on rainy days. Now we have the benefit of four toilets, two inside and another two just outside; all protected from the rain. Rather than whinging any more about the library toilets, why don’t the critics direct their energies to where a public toilet is badly needed – the corner of the New World car park closest to the shops and restaurants on Clarence St. It would be great if our so-called local board, the community-minded supermarket operator and the local real-estate mafia, could get together; and come to the aid of those of us for whom well-placed public toilets are a necessity, not just a convenience. And, pigs might fly, you say! Wylie Spicer

Suggested removal of Anzac flowers a low blow How much lower can councillors’ decision-making descend? I refer to the depth of unfeeling for those who sacrificed their lives so that we may live today free from oppression. Mind you council’s cost-cutting measures regarding the poppy gardens along

Memorial Drive is a form of oppression. Have a heart! Many of us lost relatives in both World Wars and if they survived many returned scarred from the conflicts. Let us remember them. Colin Tubbs, returned service veteran

Tone it down – plea to parents of teenage boys Please, please, please could parents possibly have a quiet word in the ears of their tweens and teens and in particular to their sons, about the swearing that we increasingly seem to be exposed to in the community? I came out of New World one Saturday recently and a group of boys was perched on the seat outside the supermarket (which, incidentally, I am always pleased to see). As I passed, multiple boys said 'F***', then I heard, 'F*** off c***' said loudly and in a joking fashion. As I walked past them, I pictured elderly people experiencing this, or visitors to Devonport, or young children and myself, so I walked back to the group and asked if they could tone down their language, which they thought was almightily funny. I knew (of course) that they would laugh - in fact, I knew that I might get more than just a giggle in response, but I like to think that if my chil-

dren were letting themselves and Devonport down in public, then a fellow resident would speak up for the values that I like to think this community (at least) holds. This is not an isolated incident - even my daughters complain about the swearing on the public and school buses on the way to school and in the school grounds. Before I get responses from people telling me to get over it, get with the programme or that it's just normal– it's not. What I am increasingly sad about is the fact that people don't even care who hears them, how loud they sound and just how dopey swearing makes them look. It might be a good chance to ask your boys if they would speak like that in front of their grandmother or to point out to them that girls don't find incessant swearing attractive. It's a kind of noise pollution I think we could all do without. Anna Yallop

Is PM-driven flag change worth $26 million? Shame on the PM, especially at this time, perhaps in bad taste for many during the centenary commemorations of 100 years since WW1. He apparently disregards the honour, sacrifice and memory in respect of those fallen New Zealanders in their military duty to New Zealand, under this flag, the official ‘New Zealand Ensign’ since 1869, for which, historically, it has represented New Zealand ‘Aotearoa’ since 1902 as New Zealand’s National Flag on land, serving through all conflicts involving New Zealand since WW1, up to today’s Afghanistan. There is certainly no strong public lobby to change the flag; this was glaringly evident in previous referenda. Therefore, why put the taxpayers to substantial expense for another two referenda? New Zealand’s current 1869

flag came into official use on land, on 24 March 1902, and was seen in use during the Boer War, evidenced on postcards, and Premier Seddon’s recorded comments. With 18,500 New Zealand service personnel killed in WW1 and a further 31,633 making the supreme sacrifice in WW2, when serving under this current NZ flag, not to mention those losses in subsequent conflicts. It might appear to many, to be a little flippant at this particular time to advocate a change. Initiated by the PM, an issue that might have more to do with one’s ego, to make his mark on New Zealand’s history, when proposing an excessive $26m bi-referendum to replace this most honoured and fought for, our sacred New Zealand flag. Colin Andrews, Hauraki

Thanks Devonport from Tuvalu The Tuvalu Auckland community would like to thank the people of Devonport who have been extremely generous in donating all sorts of nonperishable food and other essentials to be sent to Tuvalu to help a lot of people who have lost so much and are trying to cope with the aftermath of cyclone Pam. Tuvalu is in a state of emergency with food sources destroyed and water supplies contaminated by bodies unearthed from graveyards. The Tuvaluans in Auckland organised four containers filled with food and other essentials to be shipped to Tuvalu last Friday. Salota Aleke of Manuka Restaurant, who is from the island of Tuvalu, contacted some friends and

locals and the response has been amazing. The people of Devonport helped fill up one whole container with plenty of non-perishable food, seeds, tools and cooking utensils. The people in Tuvalu will continue to struggle for a while but we are sure of one things they will be okay for a bit when the containers arrive. A special thank you from the Auckland Nui Tuvalu community to Peter Knowles, John Ashton of New World Devonport, and friends and regulars of Manuka Restaurant for giving so much. Once again thank you Devonport. Salota Aleke for the Tuvalu Auckland community

Draw a line in the sand – stop spoiling our world It’s been paradise this long summer in Devonport. Most of us are soaking up the good things Devonport gives us – parks, beaches, the harbour, bars, cafes, restaurants and good neighbours, most of who value what we have. On occasions we pick up our paper, the Flagstaff, or the morning paper and bugger me, there is the bad news – the blowflies are spoiling our BBQs. The bluebottle of the last week or so, was

a politician proclaiming we were getting good value out of a coastal reserve strip access for public, in a giveaway deal on the foreshore of Devonport. Yet another secret deal, closed-door meeting. Who do they think they are? The same bluebottle charged as protector of our environment, has clearly been party to the last giveaway of public marine recreational areas, and pivotal in the promotion of the good deed council has done the community in ridding the asset of little value. Now to become a floating subdivision... That person and an assembly of other conspirators arranged the mockery and changing of our seabed and foreshore protection legislation, in effect unlawful, yet to be challenged and overturned. These antics erode the long-fought protection of our natural assets. The second biggest joke of the week past was our mayor admitting that until the papers approached him, he knew nothing of the harbour board antics. He did also say we may yet get a dollar to make an ugly super highway into Devonport before we know it – he’s found some spare cash. All these mobsters are maggots of society, who carry out secret missions and use our rates to tell us how stupid we all are when it comes to understanding the ports issues and marine ecology, using full-page paper ads, they print propaganda. These same arrogant people will employ a cohort to prepare a report to tell us their way is the way forward, and you will pay thousands to their chosen author, set to say what

they are told to say. Decades of our nation’s progress in learning to respect that which is not ours is to be left alone for future generationsour forests and seabeds – all that is now gone. These individuals, people employed by us, know we own the harbour dock facility and employ the board, and yet they mock us. They fill the terminal area out further into seabed areas, all for the almighty dollar, for who? When clearly there are better solutions that respect the value of commerce in our city as we must. No one is recommending ignoring the value of progress or development in our city. But there is a thin blue line here: the historic deal that saw a speculator try and fill in the entire Ngatiranga Bay some decades ago for his own gain with no regard to the environment. That is exactly where this legislation change is taking us. It must be changed and the deals done improperly must be overturned It is clear a group of intelligent people have taken the harbour board to the courts, over the ports nonsense. We need their help – please extend the court file to challenge the legislation that allows reclamations and freeholding and give-away LINZ valuations. Stop spoiling our world. Ron Dykman

Batting forever in the comfort of your own lounge

Getting Batting Forever across the line… Peter Robb with sons Toby (left) and Lucca, who were centrally involved in producing and testing the batting-practice invention

Devonport Health practitioner and long-time cricket fan Peter Robb has developed a batting practice machine – so simple, effective and affordable – it could revolutionise the game. It has been endorsed by Brendon McCullum and is set for worldwide release in August. He spoke to Rob Drent.

Bathrooms & Kitchens North Shore A fresh new approach to bathroom and kitchen renovations. • Design, renovation and quote service • Fully project-managed renovations, using trusted tradesmen from the North Shore We are a Devonport-based company who will work alongside you towards making your bathroom and kitchen ideas a reality, and within a budget that you will be comfortable with. Cricket practice in the lounge? Totally possible, says Peter Robb, creator of Batting Forever, an invention that makes unlimited batting practice available in all conditions. He’s put it to the test with sons Toby and Lucca – even if the first lounge sessions occurred when wife and mother Louise was out shopping. But the machine has potential far beyond the inventor’s living room. Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum recently put Batting Forever through its paces just before the game with Bangladesh in Hamilton. McCullum immediately asked where he could get one. He was especially keen to try it out with his two kids, who have taken an interest in cricket. Batting Forever weighs 9 kg and comes in a portable carry bag a bit like a small tent. It is easily assembled and allows batting practice for young and old, at home, at the park even at the beach. Like many good ideas though, it has taken years and thousands of hours of design tinkering to reach production stage. Robb says the seed of the idea grew in Christmas 2010, following batting with a ball in a sock that was suspended from a beam in his brother’s shed. In January 2011 Robb walked out of the front door of his Ewen Alison Ave house and into the garden with a piece of rope and a cricket ball inside a sock looking for the perfect suspension spot. No luck, so he

improvised by connecting a basketball hoop to a plant with a piece of bamboo. So there it was – a good old-fashioned ball in a sock suspended by a rope. His sons, Toby and Lucca, were able to get extra batting practice on their own. “It worked very well until inevitably the gentle batting changed to full-on hitting. The ball would get tangled around the bamboo or wrapped around the overhead telephone cable, and there would be the call....mum or dad can you come and help.” Robb thought, there must be a better way and that there must be people all over the world lacking the same perfect suspension point. He decided what was needed was a high tensile steel frame to cope with the force of the struck cricket ball. An advertisement was put on the New World supermarket notice board: “Ex-army camp stretchers wanted, please phone Peter Robb 445 4329.” The next day a call came through. The caller had four stretchers and lived 500 metres away. Two stretchers were assembled and put on their sides on the front lawn. They were wired together at one end. The cricket ball was driven into the V-shape formed by the two stretchers. “Bingo, not only absorb deflect, but the ball returned to be picked up and re-hit.” Two frames were then built from bamboo. They were joined together with bicycle tyres,

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 19

May 1 2015 allowing them to open for indoor batting action or to be closed for storage. The ball in the sock was suspended from a hook in the ceiling. A range of nets were tested for performance. “We had the very first on-your-own full blown batting inside, midwinter, fire, music and refreshments. Total batting luxury.” Robb, who has run the Devonport Health Clinic in Rattray St for more than 20 years, also felt he had a product he could develop and take to the world. The first provisional patent was filed in June 2011. He understood the need for secrecy and confidentiality. A bamboo tripod was built to support the net and suspend the ball. The correct angles were set. A telescopic aluminium tripod prototype was then built to specification (2.36 metres overall height to allow for clearance under standard ceiling heights and use indoors). A second provisional patent was filed in June 2012. He elicited the help of an old cricket mate Stephen Wade and the company V Ltd was incorporated in March 2013, with the aim of launching the cricket invention, The V. The vision from the first company meeting was: “To sell one million units to the cricket world and to introduce The V to the long room at Lords”. During 2013, with the need for privacy, V Ltd directors meetings were held at the Mangawhai beach sand dunes. This was the halfway point on the map between where Robb (Devonport) and Wade (Whangarei) live. Here they were able to test The V without being seen, discuss key design points that needed attention, and progress the international patent procress, as well the direction commercialisation would take. Robb and Wade have a common interest and passion for cricket, which goes back at least 30 years to their university days. They attended test matches and played in a cricket team together. They play in three annual social games, one a two-day test in a remote picturesque valley. Robb grew up in Kerikeri and is from a cricketing family. He played in his father’s team as a 12-year-old and through his secondaryschool years. He played representative cricket for Northland as an opening batsman. Robb has been associated with the North Shore Cricket Club for 20 years and during the last seven years has been involved with coaching and umpiring of junior cricket for Toby and Lucca. The ideas for The V began to flow into drawings. Robb wrote his design brief. The batting unit needed to be free-standing, lightweight, portable and be able to withstand the force of a struck cricket ball – Chris Gayle-proof. “The original prototype was built from bamboo, baling twine and fishing net and to be honest looked more like something out of Dr.Zeus than a high-performance sports device. Batting did begin though and the eureka moment was near.” The V – or Batting Forever as it is now

Champagne on ice, yeah right… James Lindsay crosses the finishing line of one of the world’s most gruelling marathons

Lucca Robb puts Batting Forever through its paces called – has a range of applications. “You could bat on your own, inside or outside, no need for bowlers. It was a battingtechnique enhancer. “The V-shape encourages and strengthens all cricket shots. The core technical strength of the world’s best batsmen, including Crowe, Williamson, Kohli…cuts and pulls could also be practised,” says Robb. The V can be used as a coaching aid and for self-coaching and warm-ups. “The absorb-deflect action causes the ball to return on a changed angle. The batsman is able to learn to move the feet, and to correctly position the body so the ball can be played under the eyes,” says Robb. Muscle memory – when a movement is repeated over time and a long-term memory is created for that task, allowing it to be poerformed without conscious effort – is synonymous with sport. “The V is a muscle-memory machine. Thirty-five minutes a day on The V you will have hit 5000-10,000 balls in a week. It is also one of the most enjoyable non-jarring, core-strengthening, cardiovascular workouts

you could have,” says Robb When Robb and Wade were faced with the challenge of how best to take the product to market, Robb had a chance conversation with local Devonport resident Martin Weekes, who recommended licensing the product to one of the global cricket companies. “Martin has been very helpful, his knowledge and advice was vital in mentoring through key steps of the licensing process.” A licensing agreement was signed with Puma in 2014. They have named the invention Batting Forever and it will be available in stores in August for between $250 and $300. Meanwhile the practising continues at home. Toby opens the batting for the Takapuna Grammar first X1 and Lucca plays at North Shore Cricket Club. They will both are likley to become known worldwide. The will feature on a USB instruction stick that Puma will include in its information pack. Apparently there are no complaints from mother Louise. Robb says in fact women love the sound of practice at home. “It’s theraupetic - willow against leather.”

Iverson’s contibution to Devonport will live on

Malcolm Iverson – a life member of both Takapuna Grammar Rowing and North Shore Rugby Clubs, and one of the founding fathers of North Harbour Rugby – has died. Iverson worked tirelessly for more than 50 years’ helping to make Devonport the place it is today. He served on numerous committees, was involved in countless fundraisers and helped save several valuable community buildings. Iverson was a past chairman of Belmont Intermediate School Board of Trustees, president of Stanley Bay Bowls Club and was the liason officer for Auckland Rugby, responsible for a British Lions and Maori All Blacks tour. He was also involved in Sea Scouts, the YMCA and was on the committee at St Augustine’s church and North Shore Age Concern. Iverson grew up in Beaconsfield St with six brothers. In an interview with the Flagstaff four years ago he said: “Devonport is a fantastic place to have lived and grown up in. The beaches, the football grounds, all the sports you could get involved with, Devonport schools. The people in Devonport; they were so friendly and looked after one another.” He was born in the Depression and was just starting school in the war years, when Devonport was largely a military base. After leaving Takapuna Grammar School, Iverson went to work as an office boy at Dominion Breweries. Later he worked for the Education Board as a truancy officer. He also worked as a company secretary, at the Naval dockyards and ran a small assembly business employing people with disabilities. Before he retired, Iverson spent seven years at Wairau Valley Special School. Iverson met his wife of 50 years, Barbara, through rowing and they married at Holy Trinity Church. Rowing was an important part of Iverson’s life. As well as being a life member of Takapuna Grammar Rowing Club, he became a trustee and a life member of Auckland Senior Schools Rowing, which he chaired for 15 years.

Community contribution… Malcolm Iverson Rowing was introduced at Takapauna Grammar in 1984, when the school took 56 pupils to its first Maadi Cup. Iverson coached at the school into his 70s. But the big love of his life was rugby. “I played rugby as a five-year-old right through to seniors for North Shore. I was a loose forward or a utility back because my weight wasn’t that great,” he told the Flagstaff. He held positions as junior and senior delegate on the Auckland Rugby Union for 12 - 14 years.

When North Harbour Rugby was being mooted, Iverson spent three years as chairman of a steering committee that set it up while teams were still members of the Auckland Union. Iverson helped save Stanley Bay Bowling Club (of which he was later greens superintendent) from being sold off to developers in 1997. “Membership had dropped to about 25, which isn’t so bad these days, but then you needed a lot of volunteers to help with the greens,” he said in the interview. “They said the money (from the sale) would be put into trust for North Shore bowling but I felt that eventually money would end up in national hands and leave Devonport. “Also, as the city grows, you want pockets of sporting things. Now we’ve moved from bowls to petanque and its a bit of a social club.” In similar fashion, he helped save what is now the Sea Scouts hut on King Edward Parade from being knocked down. “When the rowing club was moved from Devonport out to Lake Pupuke, a councillor wanted the building demolished. “My brother and I arranged for the Sea Scouts to move in. They paid £100 a year for rent and maintenance. It saved it from demolition and it’s now a lovely little building. “Through life I’ve learned that if someone has a good idea and is working hard, you’ve got to get behind them.”

Baroque concerti played with class

A sparkling concert of Baroque concerti and concerti grossi at Harmony Hall launched The Devonport Chamber Orchestra’s (DCO) 2015 concert season on April 12. Ably led by Michael Hunter, the orchestra played without a conductor. This requires concentration for all players to maintain a tight ensemble and the group largely achieved this. The programme was made up of two concerti grossi by Charles Avison, a younger contemporary of Handel. He lived, taught and composed in Newcastle, England. The concerti grossi played in this concert were reminiscent of the works of Corelli, an Italian master of the genre. Avison made use of a three-member concertante group of two violins and cello, with Alison Talmage on harpsichord adding lively colour. The most impressive playing was heard in the two concerti by Georg Telemann. Telemann was born in Germany in 1681, just four years before both Bach and Handel. Sixteen-year old Gwyneth Nelmes played his Violin Concerto in E major. Composed in the first quarter of the eighteenth century, the concerto was written in a style established by Vivaldi. Gwyneth played sensitively and with a full-bodied tone. Her obvious rapport with the orchestra resulted in a tightly controlled performance. Her faultless

technique enabled her to handle with ease the florid passages in the upper register. Gwyneth is a talent to watch out for. So too is Stephanie Townsend, not much older than Gwyneth, who performed one of Telemann’s best known works, his Viola concerto in G major. Stephanie stamped her signature on the work from the opening bars. Her playing was authoritative with a beautifully rich and eloquent tone. Her intonation and phrasing were assured and the orchestra supported her with confident playing. The concerto is in four movements – opening with a rather majestic slow movement followed by an allegro and then andante. The final movement, the Presto, concluded the concerto with a sense of jubilation and warmth. The audience acknowledged generously the very rich talent they had seen and heard. Roger Booth thanked the soloists for their involvement in the concert and also Neil Shepherd, a violist in the orchestra, who had selected the music and edited and printed it from the original manuscripts – an onerous task. • The DCO’s next concert will be on May 31 at 5pm in Holy Trinity church and will feature two Vivaldi violin concerti with Stella Kim as soloist. Kim gave a stunning performance of

Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending with DCO two years ago and the orchestra is looking forward to playing with her again. The concert will also include excerpts from Handel’s Messiah and several popular concert arias. Rogan Falla

Anzac at Depot continues Anzac-themed events and exhibitions continue at the Depot this month. There is a Te Po Karioi Night of Entertainment on May 2 (between 4pm and 8pm) when the New Zealand Cook Islands Arts Collective will perform at the Depot Artspace. It will include Cook Islands dance, song and music, plus artist tributes to their soldiers. The night will highlight many of Cook Islands’ finest musicians with Heimana Music Productions hosting the event. Heimana Music bands and musicians will perform along with a group of Cook Islands youth, who are choreographing new dance works. The Lest We Forget the 500 Cook Islands Soldiers Exhibition continues at the Depot until May 6.

Wrong pedal to the metal – service station accident

A 90-year old man crashed several metres into the Hauraki Corner BP service station on April 19, forcing it to close for several hours. The vehicle drove past bollards and through the glass entrance and came to a stop in the back of the store. Waitemata Police Inspector Sunny Patel said when police arrived on the scene, the driver was breathing and conscious. A decision on whether a charge will be laid will be made once the police investigation is finished. BP Communications Manager Jonty Mills

told the Flagstaff that the man “inadvertently accelerated instead of using the brake and drove through quite a bit of shelving until he came to a stop.” He said no staff or other customers had been injured. But emergency services were called as a precaution. The service station was closed and reopened several hours after the early-afternoon crash, he said. BP was looking at the CCTV footage of the accident to review its safety measures, particularly to assess why the bollards did not stop the vehicle. The cost of the damage is not yet known.

Where the circus meets art

One of exhibition images

Lyndsay Brock’s latest exhibition harks back to traditions of yesteryear both in composition and marketing. Cirque is an exhibition of works on paper inspired by the continued interest in the work of Brocks mother Heather Masters whose portfolio was created in the Arts & Crafts era. Brock has returned to those early skills with pictures that capture “the exoticism and mystery of female circus performers in multiple roles.” Given the colorful nature of the works and their performance theme, Brock hit on the idea of advertising on the cinema screen to give a dramatic effect. It is also one of the oldest forms of advertising. With help from near neighbour, and long-time television industry man Ian Goldingham, a clip was made and is now on show at the Vic, believed to be the first local advert of its type to screen there. • Cirque May 9 to 27th. Opening 2pm Saturday 9 May at The Depot Artspace.

In the zone – slowdown for Devonport village proposed A cycling activist is continuing a campaign to have traffic slowed to 30 km/h in Devonport Village. In a report to Devonport-Takapuna Local Board last week, Bike Devonport spokesperson Chris Werry said a 20 metre stretch of Queen’s Parade had speed reduced to 30km/h, so why not extend the limit across the rest of the village? Some residents in the past have suggested establishing a 30 km/h zone. Werry said: “We already have a 30 k zone, it’s just very, very short. We can move three signs and extend the zone to cover the entire village,” he told the board. He since posted on the Bike DevonportsFacebook page: “This has been successfully trialled in Wellington and is being extended to cover all suburban town centres. It has been shown elsewhere to reduce accidents and increase pedestrian and cycling numbers.” Bike Devonport has lobbied the DevonportTakapuna Local Board for a variety of safer cycling measures since its inception last year. The Board received Werry’s report.

Quest for restorative justice and charge dismissal Devonport teenager Luke Daniel Bassani Theuma (17) has changed his plea to guilty of injuring Harrison Living (14), in an incident that saw the younger boy suffer a broken jaw. Theuma initially pleaded not guilty but changed his plea after an amendment to the prosecution’s statement of facts. At a North Shore District Court hearing last week, Theuma applied for a Restorative Justice Conference – a face-to-face meeting between the two boys with the aim being to lessen the harm suffered by Living as a result of the crime while still holding Theuma to

account. The conference only occurs if it is agreed to by Living. Theuma also filed an application for discharge without conviction, which if successful, would give him a clean criminal record despite pleading guilty, and erase the effect of a conviction on future employment and travel. Police prosecutor Sergent James Gallagher said he would oppose the application due to the seriousness of the charge. The date for the sentencing hearing has been set for June 16.

Mountain bikes back on Mt Vic

Mountain biking is back on Mt Victoria – for the time being. A sign banning off-road biking on the summit of Mt Victoria is gone. Auckland Council Volcanic Cones Manager Scott De Silva says the sign was originally installed after council received a number of public complaints about off-road mountain bikers. Maunga Authority spokesperson Mike George told the Flagstaff at the time that the authority did not need to consult the public on the ban as preventing damage was a routine

management issue. But this month council, who co-manages the mountain with the authority, changed tack. “After further consideration, it was felt that decisions relating to off-track mountain biking should be addressed through the integrated management plan process, which is due to start this year. The sign was subsequently removed,” De Silva said. North Shore Ward Councillor Chris Darby told the Flagstaff: “Things have been sorted for now.” He said public feedback will be a crucial part

Mt Vic vehicle ban possible

Missing fuse keeps people in the dark

Vehicle restrictions could be on the cards for Mt Victoria, says Maunga Authority chair Paul Majurey. After resolving last week to keep Mt Eden free from vehicles, the authority is adopting a wait-and-see approach for extending the ban to other cones. “The Maunga Authority will see how the experience of a motor vehicle-free summit plays out for Maungawhau/Mount Eden and only then look at the matter maunga by maunga – which will involve looking at the specifics for each maunga,” Majurey said. The experience of Mt Eden’s ban will have a pivotal influence on future decisions, he said in a statement to the Flagstaff.

A missing fuse has been blamed for the lack of lighting along the brand-new path on Bartley Terrace, according to Auckland Transport (AT). They were alerted to the situation by Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen, who advised them that: “the walkway seemed very dark and the Dragon Seat was not lit up at night.” Cohen told the Flagstaff he was concerned about both the continued vandalism of the Dragon Seat as well as pedestrian safety at night. When AT looked into the matter, they found “no fuse in the power supply circuit.” This was rectified and the lights are now working.

Digital photos won’t last forever Google’s vice-president Vint Cerf warned this year that our digital photos held on technology that is rapidly being replaced are in danger of being lost forever unless they are printed onto paper.

As a photographer keen to preserve in a book, and to some extent bring back to life, over a thousand photographs from an unforgettable era of music in Christchurch in the late Sixties and Seventies, I put this brief to a local Devonport publisher. Terrie Gray at Penstemon Publishing responded to the call for a high quality, hardback publication, and produced for me a superb book of my photographs, thanks to her attention to detail, page design, editing and project management. Having placed my faith and photographs in Terrie’s hands, I am delighted with the result and highly recommend that you consider having Penstemon Publishing create your next photo book. of shaping the management plan and that council staff were keeping an eye on the graveyard area where some damage caused by bikes has been reported. De Silva said that “protection and conversation of the maunga are high priorities for the Maunga Authority who co-manages the cones with council. “Visitors are encouraged to consider the importance of protecting this taonga and to help minimise the impact of recreational activities on the maunga,” he said.

One Night Only at the Vic The VTT and Vic management is offering the Victoria Theatre free of charge to local performers for a one night live event. There will be three events this year for a theatre, dance or music performer or group who will have the use of the venue free of hire, staff and technical charges. The event will be held on a week night outside of school holidays and preference will go to non-commercial local groups. There will be a contestable application process and performers must apply by 24 May to -

Photographic history kept for future generations The collation of a collector’s edition of images from the Christchurch music scene has kept Kevin Hill occupied for the best part of two years. Hill estimates it took around 3000 hours to digitise 170 prints for Visual Memories: The Christchurch Music Scene from 1968-1980. A professional photographer working in Christchurch at the time, Hill was in bands and followed the music scene - always with his trusty Pentax in hand. With thousands of images on file, Hill felt that one of the best ways to preserve them was to put out a book – a kind of photograph album of the era. Most of the photos feature Christchurch musicians, but some overseas acts who appeared in the city are in the book as well. Hills’ images have been on a website for a while “and basically I have been hounded for three years by people who asked me to put them in a book because (those years) are an important part of their families’ history.” Indeed one of the straplines in the book says: “Now I can prove to my kids I did have hair and Collaborators preserving history… Terrie Gray and Kevin Hill I really could rock.” The response to the book’s publication “Terrie was absolutely brilliant and it was photographs printed off in albums. had been “tremendous” says Hill, the branch The photos stored on hard drives and disks manager at Harcourts Devonport, who has great to have another local involved … her atcould ultimately be lost as technology advances been putting in early mornings and late nights tention to detail was amazing.” Gray says she worked for a “month – day and in the future. French connection – delegation visits source of artist’s creativity

Honouring history in Pollock’s garden… (from left to right) Derek Brickell, Grégoire Catryu (director of the mayor’s office), Frédéric Leturque (mayor of Arras), Helen Pollock, Cristophe Serieys (deputy director for culture) and Isabelle Pilarowski (director of La Carrière Wellington Museum) enjoying a glass of bubbles in front of Devonport’s former quarry, Mt Cambria A French delegation from the city of Arras, including its mayor and deputy director for culture, visited local sculptor Helen Pollock for lunch last Tuesday. They want to display one of Pollock’s sculptures in Arras and the delegation dropped in to Devonport on their way to the Anzac ceremony in Wellington. Pollock’s commemorative sculpture Victory Medal was installed at Fort Taka-

puna as part of NZ Sculpture OnShore in 2010. After being dispayed in Arras it will become part of a permanent commemoration in the city of Le Quesnoy. This isn’t the first time Arras has installed one of Pollock’s sculptures. In 2010, Falls the Shadow was on display at the city’s La Carrière Wellington Museum, before it moved to the Passchendaele Museum in Belgium.

Arras was near the Western Front for most of World War I. In 1917, 446 men of the New Zealand Tunnelling Company substantially expanded the city’s medieval tunnels into a strategic military system that could accommodate 25,000 men. Le Quesnoy was captured by the New Zealand Division just a week before the end of World War I. It was New Zealand’s last major action during the war.

Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, Hong Kong and… Ohakea! Ten of our students and three teachers were forced to add an extra stop to their 17-day trip to Asia over the school holidays, when a rough patch of weather forced their final flight to have a seven-hour delay at the military base at Ohakea. However, the group faced the stressful end to their journey with good spirits, as they reflected on the amazing experiences they had enjoyed over the previous two and a half weeks. The trip was for Business Studies, Economics and Accounting, and the all-girl group visited factories like Hyundai Steel and Kia Motors in Seoul and even our own The Warehouse Group in Shanghai. They learned about multinational corporations and how business expand and change to suit different locations. They also visited the Bestway factory in Shanghai to see how common household items are manufactured. The trip also included amazing cultural experiences like visiting the Great Wall of China and cycling around the Xi’an City Wall.

They also experienced tea tasting and markets. One of the students on the trip, Helen Leenoh, said her favourite experience was, “learning how to barter with street sellers. It was fun to see how low you could get prices down and how dramatic the sellers got.”

Overall, everyone had a great time and learned a lot about Asian culture as well as international business. Despite the tiring end to the trip, the group left feeling inspired and thankful for the experience. By Ella HalstEad

Stunning art on our doorstep Gibbs Farm is a multimillion dollar sculpture farm located by the Kaipara Harbour. In late March the Level 2 and 3 Art History classes were lucky enough to visit this amazing site, as part of the research for their upcoming internals. The farm is filled with an array of sculptures from internationally renowned artists such as Neil Dawson and Graham Bennett. The sculpture site was monumental, beyond any scale I had seen for art before that time. It was truly astonishing the size of these sculptures, and the effort, design and materials that went behind installing them. Most sculptures consisted of tons of materials, and each sculpture was nearly matched underground with the foundations. Georgia Smith, Year 12, said she “enjoyed the large scale of the sculptures as this meant they

were not swallowed by the mass surroundings, and it made them more exciting”. Anneka Scholtz, also Year 12, said, “I was completely overwhelmed by the sculptures, they were so incredible and huge and I had so much fun walking around the farm”.

The sculptures varied in colour, size and material, and each one told a different story and interested students in a different way, and the opportunity to feed some giraffes certainly didn’t detract from the experience. By Jordan Blum

Consider it a job well done

A 150-strong cast and crew delighted audiences in their thousands with their phenomenal performance of much-loved musical, oliver! Coming together in just under nine weeks with large chorus numbers such as oom Pah Pah and Consider yourself and an impressive vocal score, the show presented a huge challenge. However, we delivered - with thrilling performances full of elaborate choreography, costumes, singing, and acting. Response from audience members was overwhelming. Geoff Allen, a Devonport drama teacher, wrote:

“Congratulations to last night’s cast. Takapuna Grammar’s oliver! is just outstanding entertainment. Sometimes in the arts, partnerships occur that propel the work to a new level. Thank you Jane, Anna-Marie and Bruce for your passion, creativity and hard work.” oliver! provided a memorable experience for those involved, instilling an appreciation and love for performing arts in our students and local community. Driving past TGS on your way to work or whatnot, you may have noticed a significantly large building has vanished from the front field. You may have also noticed that the building was up and gone in just under three weeks; we’re talking about the complete build of a five-bedroom house here. After nearly a year’s worth of hard work and countless meetings on the part of Devonport Rotary, Takapuna Grammar School and Habitat for Humanity, the memorable house has made its way across the bridge to the well deserving family in need. “Being a partner in the Big Habitat build has been a great opportunity for Takapuna
