Family warns others after home invasion
rubbish bin at him.” With Reese yelling out to the rest of the household, the offender raced out through the second entrance to the en-suite, through an adjoining bedroom, down the stairs and out the front door. “He got out incredibly fast,” said Turrall. “All I saw was someone disappearing off the deck wearing something white on his head - a scarf or a hoodie.” Richard, who is well known around Devonport, from his years as a special needs student at Takapuna Grammar, was by this time “raising all hell.” Two police cars and a dog handler arrived “almost immediately”, Turrall said. But the offender got away. As a result of the invasion, Reese had to be admitted to hospital with heart problems. John Turrall suspects the offender may be local given his knowledge of the area and quick escape. “It was an amazingly brazen thing to do – he came into the house through a bedroom window onto the same floor where we were having dinner. He went through the downstairs bedrooms and did not know there was no one in them – there could have been a kid in there.” To go upstairs, the offender would have passed glass doors and been able to see the family eating. The gloved offender did not say anything
when confronted and appeared unarmed, although a foot-long screwdriver, presumably used to break in, was found dumped in a nearby hedge. The offender made off with some small item “I think he was looking for jewellery, but he went to the wrong house for that,” Turrall said. Richard was very upset about the incident and worried about what had happened to his mum. A golf trophy was taken from his bedroom. But he had now “settled down and started sleeping in his own room again,” Turrall said. “I’m angry about it but at the moment I
just hope Reese is okay.” She returned home last Wednesday and was back at work late last week, but is having ongoing tests on her heart. She said she could hardly believe the incident had happened with other people in the house. “We’ve had amazing support from neighbours and the community – I’ve had cards from people I don’t even know,” said Reese. The offender is believed to have hidden in a neighbour’s garage until the police left. John Turrall says the main reason he contacted the Flagstaff was to alert other readers. “People need to know Devonport is not as safe as we think it is. ”

Devonport projects deferred At least three Devonport projects are on the list of Auckland Council work postponed for up to 10 years to cut costs. The list of deferred projects includes: $196,500 for the Devonport Town Centre upgrade in the Bartley Tce and Clarence St area, $118,000 for Torpedo Bay coastal pedestrian access and $89,100 for the proposed Ngataringa Park toilets. Deferrals of the projects will help reduce council expenses in the next financial year
to achieve the 2.5 per cent average rates increase proposed by Mayor Len Brown. The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board did not support the proposed list of deferrals and wants to make sure the deferred projects are prioritised. Board member Joe Bergin said it was appropriate to defer the Clarence St upgrade as it would entail even more disruption in the aftermath of Devonport’s recent intensive construction phase.

Sitting MP Maggie Barry retained the North Shore seat for National with an almost identical share of the Devonport vote to the 2011 General Election. Barry took 54.1% of the electorate candidate votes, with 4,459 votes from the Devonport booths, a healthy majority of 2,386 over Labour candidate Claire Szabó, with 2,073 votes. Green party candidate Brett Stansfield was a further 959 votes behind. Szabó and Stansfield attracted 25.1% and 13.5% of the Devonport votes respectively. Barry’s share was up 0.1% from 2011. It was a slightly different story for the Devonport party votes, which counters Devonport’s purported left-leaning tendencies. The National tally of the party votes was 4,659, which at 56.5% of the votes was up 1.8% on its share in 2011. Labour performed significantly worse at party level, with 1,361 votes (16.5%) and 1.6% fewer than in 2011. The Green Party was less than a hundred behind Labour with 1,263 votes (15.3%) and beat them in Narrow Neck and the three Devonport booths, yet
it was down 0.7% overall on 2011 figures. The Green Party would have hoped to have overtaken the Labour party vote in Devonport this election. Devonport’s Labour and Green voters can at least take some solace in their support levels being higher in the peninsula booths than for the North Shore electorate as a whole. New Zealand First with 500 votes (6.1%) appeared to split support for the left and was up 0.8% on 2011. Increasing their share of the Devonport party vote on the right and improving on their 2011 result in Devonport was the Conservative party, with 255 votes and 3.1% (up 1.0%); their electorate candidate Melissa Perkin received 424 votes and a 5.1% share. The ACT party candidate Nick Kearney received 86 votes. • There were more than 8,000 early votes across the North Shore, which is double the number for the last election. At this stage it is not possible to establish the pattern of early voting, but given that Devonport comprises roughly 25% of the electorate, it is probably safe
to assume that peninsula early voters made up in excess of 2,000 of the electorate total. This does mean that it made it more difficult to make any clear comparisons between booths in 2011 based on Devonport voter numbers. Barry was apprehensive to speak equivocally about the result, with around 2600 special votes still to come in, but was delighted to retain her personal support and that of the National Party. Campaigning on the streets she noticed a distinct shift in support towards National, with the “non-revelations” of Kim Dotcom about John Key just prior to the election, and Labour’s much criticised capital gains tax. In government appointments she would be delighted to carry on as chair of the Local Government and Environment select committee. While locally she would continue to lobby on improving Lake Rd congestion, “which was holding Devonport back.” Since the last election complaints from voters to her about public transport had quadrupled, she said. Barry also planned more informationsharing public meetings in the electorate.

‘Aquatic tinglings’ a benefit for nude swimmers
Birthday suits are back for this November’s Round North Head Classic swim. The option of naked swimming had been a tradition when the Williamson Brothers originally organised the event. When the Devonport Swim Club took over organising the swim in 2009, it fell off the menu. Event organiser Ian McDonald says council regulations discouraged having a nude category. But this year, McDonald had a bright idea to revive the tradition. “We will have a water start and a designated boat for nude simmers. They can take off their togs once they are in the water and hand them to one of our volunteers in the boat. Then once they arrive at the other end, they will get them back and put them on before they step onshore,” he says. Ten out of 70 swimmers registered so far have opted to swim naked, McDonald says. “One of its benefits is the aquatic tinglings you get,” he says. The club is hoping to attract 200 swimmers and McDonald expects about 30 of them will choose the birthday-suit option. McDonald’s water start idea has found international traction. “I got an email from a swim club in Los Angeles that had a lot of trouble organising a naked swim because of local nudity laws, but with our water-start idea, they will be able to circumvent those,” he says. The Round North Head Classic is a 2.5k swim from Windsor Reserve to Balmain Reserve, scheduled for Sunday 9 November. The start time is 10 am, on an outgoing tide. Tripped up at Devonport Wharf A Devonport resident who broke her arm in three places after tripping over a new kerb at the ferry wharf is warning others to avoid the same fate. Lynn Dawson spent two nights in hospital, after her fall across the new kerb on Marine Square. She was on her way to a local second-hand bookshop on September 9 when she fell over just outside the ferry building entrance. “The kerb was higher than usual and had kind of a double lip,” she says. “At first I thought maybe I had been stupid and not watching where I was going, but since then I have seen two other people stumble in exactly the same place, and friends tell me they have as well. “The husband of a friend says he takes a flashlight to the early morning ferry because the place is so badly lit,” she says. Dawson says since the Marine Square is a long-term, 12-month construction project in a
very busy pedestrian spot, Auckland Transport and its contractors have to do better. “I can’t see how an elderly person with a walker or a mobility scooter is supposed to get around here unless we get temporary wooden ramps with handrails,” she says. The severity of Dawson’s injuries became apparent the day after she fell. Initially she thought she had hit her funny bone badly, but the next day the elbow was hugely swollen. Dawson is less than impressed with the wharf security staff. “The lady just stood over me with her clipboard and said she needed to fill out a report. A member of the public had to pick me off the floor,” she says. “Now I have got a plastic elbow because the head of the elbow was completely shattered. Both bones in my forearm are broken and the ligaments torn,” she says. An avid knitter, quilt maker and writer, Dawson says for the next few weeks she will mostly catch up on her reading.
Sale of 27 Lake Rd off for now The potential sale of commercial land at 27 Lake Rd has been put on hold by Auckland Council’s property arm. Auckland Council Property Limited (ACPL) has instructions to sell off property that is surplus
to council requirements. But at this stage the land was regarded as complicated mix of properties and uses and simply too dificult to sell, according to an ACPL report to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

No secret deals to favour Bayswater Marina Holdings Bayswater marina. This assertion by Mr Petterson is simply not true. And frankly he should know better than to make such allegations. The provisions in the Act that Mr Petterson refers to were primarily put in because of the reclamation activities of our major ports. I know this because this is what was discussed in the relevant Cabinet Committees. For instance these provisions cover the various reclamations made by the Auckland ports, and the reclaimed land around the Viaduct.
Mr Petterson has made false allegations against me in his letter to the editor, published on 19 September. For such a letter to be published without the courtesy of contacting me does not seem to be a fair reflection of journalistic ethics. For readers, I will set the record straight. There was, and is, no deal that has been “a carefully kept secret among National Party officials” to write in special provisions in the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011 that would specifically favour the

Council fencing at Takapuna Grammar seems to have little effect It was with some interest to me to see how the expensive new safety fencing erected by the council to coerce Takapuna Grammar School students into correctly using the pedestriancontrolled traffic lights on Lake Road outside the school has been working. It would be fair to say that the safety fencing has made it less safe now, as students are electing to cross the road even further away from the lights due to the fences ‘being in their way’. Back in my day (I know I’m sounding old now) at least one teacher was on duty at the gates before and after school every day to keep the kids in tow by using the (as it was then) zebra crossing properly as well as some words of advice on tucking shirts in and pulling socks up. It would appear that technical surveys, engineering feats and ratepayer money has not helped make the crossing any safer. Perhaps it would be better to go ‘old school’ and send a teacher or two out on occasion to impart some crossing etiquette to keep the kids in their rightful place, and safe ? Terry Bourke, Belmont

Devonport Food and Wine drowned by bureaucrats The food and wine festival is, for those of us that were around when it started, a fond memory of one of the only fun days we had in these parts. We do have the Christmas Parade and at Easter a crowd hauls a cross up Mt Vic in a mock crucifixion. Lest we forget we have a community gathering on Anzac Day. Guy Fawkes has all but been extinguished, except for diehards; fires, loud bangs and sparklers still do it for me. Dotcom gave us a free display back a couple of years ago, I fondly remember. Those who hate fun and fireworks have slowly imposed by default a kind of abolition of the event, with police support and do-gooders all fearing for public safety, or so they proclaim. This same crowd slowly turned against the food and wine festival, using the term ‘public safety’ to create an event that has now evolved to be cost-prohibitive. The public and the charities that benefitted all lose. Some people believe the utterances told to them about crime and public safety. The fact is that for years the wine and food festival was like a giant street party and the odd idiot was arrested for drunkenness, but by and large it was a street party; kids’ magicians, side-shows, food, wine, music, laughter. Then council and police laws unto themselves decided to fence us all in. The ‘family’
event was at an end. Permit costs, fencing costs, policing costs they said was all seriously needed. ‘They’ spoke to the community like naughty kids. ‘They’ fenced off the event, even policing the seashore area from landings. Not one of ‘them’ suggested positive actions or police collaboration, like the police offering free breath testing for drivers, rather than setting traps down the road trying to criminalize the overindulged. In the end the event started looking like a barbed-wire compound temporary prison; a Guantanamo Bay look. All the problems ‘they’ said the festival had were mostly created in ‘their’ minds. Control freaks and authoritarians have effectively nearly smashed the festival down. Well done to any of you that are one of ‘those’ people. Now the architectural blight, the bulk and location of the new library imposed mindlessly on our town is what will be left. Ironically Chris Darby our local council man has dared to question the quality of some of Fletchers’ Special Housing designs, in farflung suburbs. He is not wrong in this criticism, but it’s all an irony with what’s happening in Bayswater, Hobsonville, the library and soon a large retirement village (on Wakakura land) and a new supermarket (at Hauraki Corner). Staying cool til after school – when teacher hits the surf

Andrew Robinson, the 1997 National Surfing Championship title holder and now a Year 5 teacher at Devonport Primary School, has just won the annual Polar Bear Classic again, 13 years after he brought home the trophy when aged 26. He spoke to Maire Vieth.
“Sticking at it” is the key to Andrew ‘Pando’ Robinson’s surfing life in more ways than one. Last month, his persistence paid off when he won the 33rd regional Polar Bear Classic held at Sandy Bay on the Tutukaka Coast. The event had to be postponed four times until the waves were finally big enough. But on the last

weekend in August it was full on, thanks to 80 km/h onshore winds and pounding rain. “The night before I talked to my dad and he asked if I was going up there. I said I was in two minds about it. It was going to be a massive and ugly storm. But as I was saying it, I realised that I actually love going out there when it’s wild,” Robinson says. Robinson has been a regular at the Polar Bear Classic for years. He won it in 2001. “Since then I have always come runner-up, third, fourth, or been knocked out in the first round,” he says. But he stuck at it. “I just keep going because I love the people up there and the way they run it. And this year I was just on fire the whole time and had an absolute blinder of a day, on form from my first wave to my last and it was a nice feeling to know that I can still do it,” he says. Robinson finds surfing both exciting and relaxing. “I love the adrenaline rush, the performance under pressure thing, but I also love to just go out and be by myself in my own space,” he says. In 1997 Robinson became National Surfing Champion at the age of 21. At the time he was studying New Zealand History and Anthropology at Auckland University. He had been competing regionally since high school, in the National Scholastics Championship, where he made the Auckland team one year and competed nationally. “I didn’t do that well early on but I just kept at it. And then during university, I went through a stage where I was surfing really hard out
during the two months off. I wasn’t thinking about competing but I got really good,” he says. He believes having to study had a positive effect on his surfing. “Surfing is like anything. If you do it all day, every day, you get a bit burned out. Having something to break it up and think about was a good balance. It just took me a really long time to get through university.” Robinson had helped form the Takapuna Board Riders a few years prior, and when he wanted to compete at the 1997 Nationals, they sponsored his flight to Westport. Freesurfing before the event, he noticed he held his own among the other competitors. “And as I went through the competition, I got stronger and stronger. I found myself in the final up against Maz Quinn, Jai Earnshaw, Blair Stewart, who were the top guys at the time, on the cover of magazines and pretty famous in our little surfing world,” he says. Robinson won, perhaps surprising himself. “I remember being on a wave and coming off the bottom of it and looking up and seeing Maz with a kind of look of disgust on his face and I realised maybe I did have a chance here,” he says. The win was a door opener. “For the next year I was in like every New Zealand surfing magazine. I did really well competitively too, won the 1998 Auckland and Canterbury champs and got into the national team to go to Portugal for the World Surfing Games,” he says. But Robinson admits he found it a tough transition from competitive surfing – something he was passionate about but offered little money

He also worked as a DJ in a Takapuna Bar, where he met Nicky Brodie, his future wife, who also worked there. Together they moved to the Gold Coast for two years, where Robinson worked for Cheyne Horan’s School of Surf at Surfers Paradise. “I got some good experience working with large groups of tourists but what I really enjoyed was working with the kids during the holidays. “I got such a buzz seeing their excitement for learning, how they just go for it, take risks, gain confidence and succeed. It’s the same thing that I enjoy when I teach them at school now.” Robinson had thought about becoming a teacher for a while. “But this is what got me to go for it,” he says. He and Nicky returned to New Zealand, where Robinson enrolled for a postgraduate diploma in teaching and graduated within a year. In 2007, they moved back to the North Shore and a year later bought a two-bedroom house in Bayswater, which they are planning to extend and renovate to make room for their growing family, Brodie (three) and Bonnie (nearly one). Robinson now teaches around 30 Year 5 children at Devonport Primary School. He has been at the school for the last six years and manages to keep surfing during the school holidays and even during his working week. “I come to work early and finish early, so when I am not going home to my family I shoot out west for a surf and am back in time to put the kids to bed,” he says. Nicky supports his passion, he says. “She knows it’s the one thing in my life I really need to do and is pretty understanding.” Their children are also taking to the water. Last year, Robinson put Brodie on a longboard and paddled him across the estuary at Mangawhai. “And Bonnie is just a water monster.
I took her to Cheltenham the other day during low tide and she went straight into all these puddles – face first, diving,” he says. Robinson was a water baby too. “I loved being in the water even before I could walk,” he says. The youngest of three boys, he grew up in Takapuna, a stone’s throw from the beach. His early surfing was with his brothers around the Takapuna Reef. “I was sporty but tiny all the way through high school,” he says, choosing tennis and hockey over rugby. At ten, he got his first hard surf board. “I was so small and light it all happened pretty easily and my brothers both surfed so that pushed me along,” Robinson says. Once they pushed him a little too far, across the Tauranga Harbour to Matakana Island. “It was about a kilometre paddle across the harbour, crossing shipping channels and things. They had told our parents that we were just surfing at the Mount but when we got back, they had called the police and were scurrying along the beach,” he says. Surfing became a family affair. “Dad started when I did. He must have been 40. When my brothers went off surfing with friends, I’d go off with dad to Mangawhai or Piha,” he says. Surfing remains a bonding experience today. “Dad is 70 next year and he is still surfing hard. Every Christmas we all go out for a surf together, try to catch the same wave and cause havoc out there,” he says. Off the water, Robinson was obsessed with skateboards as a child. “I used to pretend I was surfing the sidewalk.” At Takapuna Primary School, he and his friends lobbied to get permission to skateboard during recess, in a dedicated area, and they succeeded. Now a primary school teacher himself, Robinson has adapted the concept. He gives some of his students surfing lessons. “I started during holidays and on weekends with a group of about 20 that are now in intermediate school. They are all on hard boards now and surf pretty good,” he says.
A box of surf treasures comes out once in a while during class as well. There are surf magazines with him on the cover and the centrefold, some with his hair dyed white. “I have a few tales to tell,” Robinson says. There are those about his wins, but cautionary ones as well, of sensing sharks below him and of the time he got stuck in the middle of Foveaux Strait, just off the tiny Raratoka Island. “It was the Rex van Huben Big Wave Challenge in 2000. The waves had 20 or 30 -foot faces on them; to this day the biggest waves I have seen. I got pulled onto the wrong side of a reef and I paddled out there for about 40 minutes trying to get back. “Nobody knew I was out there. I had big seals barking at me, tears in my eyes, and finally a guy on a jet ski 200 metres away heard my screams for help. “I was so freaked out, I didn’t compete anymore, just sat there and watched,” he says. A year later, he won it.

Schoolgirl fighting rhino extinction
Flying to Africa to save rhinoceroses from extinction, a Devonport student hopes to spread the conservation word when she gets back home. Anna Chambers, a Year-12 Kristin School student, is one of three Kiwis who attended the first World Youth Rhino Summit in South Africa last week. The Flagstaff caught up with Anna the day after she finished her mock exams and 24 hours before her plane took off. She still had a Business Internal to finish and her bags to pack. Preparations had amounted to getting a typhoid shot. “I am both excited and nervous and haven’t really had time to process the upcoming trip,” she says of her first visit to Africa and her first trip without her family. The summit enlisted 130 teenagers from around the world to fight rhinoceros poaching and turn public opinion against the escalating consumption of rhino horn, particularly in Asia. “There is a myth around it that it can cure cancer and things like that,” Anna says. A once abundant 500,000 strong rhinoceros population is close to extinction, with just over 23,000 animals still alive in Africa and Asia. Last year 1,000 rhinos were brutally killed, predominantly in South Africa, the summit brochure said. Once in South Africa, Anna is set to spend three days at the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve north of Durban. She and two other Kiwis

First Devonport BID manager appointed
Devonport’s inaugural BID manager is long-time local Judy Grieve. She was appointed last week and starts work in mid-November. Grieve said the role appealed to her because she wanted to work in Devonport with the local community and it fitted her skills and experience in marketing and communications. For five years she was the manager for Parnell’s Mainstreet programme, which was the precursor to the current Business Improvement District (BID) system. “It was similar but different (to Devonport) – Parnell is a fringe inner-city suburb close to the CBD with a passionate and engaged community.” For the last nine years Grieve has worked for Heritage New Zealand as its mid-northern area coordinator. Grieve will be based in the Devonport shopping centre at a yet-to-be confirmed location. Ice rink coming to Devonport An ice skating rink, open to the public, will be set up in the Devonport Primary School hall from October 6 – 19 as a school fundraiser. The rink has been travelling around Auckland schools. It is made of synthetic

The Devonport team – Airi Kawana, Francesco Kayrouz, Rory McCutcheon and Michael Worsfold – spent two days sailing 4.4 metre Weta Trimarans on an America’s Cup course off French Bay Yacht Club, near Titirangi. Rory was team manager, with the other three boys racing on the water. He says he enjoyed this first experience of managing a team. “It was pretty easy because they were a really good bunch of kids. They are great sailors individually but also worked
together well and really clicked,” he says. All five participating teams stayed in the Motu Moana Scout Camp for the event, and in addition to sailing had to complete a spinnaker hoist challenge, a hiking bench challenge, timekeeping, and observation, gathering points on skills and fitness on the way. “Our team won the spinnaker hoist and the hiking but we didn’t do that well in the quiz,” says Rory. Unlike the America’s Cup proper, protests were not an issue at the inaugural youth event. The programme stated that all protests had to be dealt with on the water, that none were possible off the water and that the umpire’s decision was final. Wakatere also entered a second team that came third. It consisted of Oscar Andrews, Conrad Butler, Robbie McCutcheon and Celia Willison as manager.

Another big bang for science at BIS
A record haul of medals was achieve d by Belmont Intermediate School (BIS) at the 2014 North Harbour Science Fair held last month. “It’s the highest proportion of medals ever. We submitted 13 projects and came away with 10 medals for them. Last year, we came away with 16 medals, but we had put in 21 boards,” says Susan Revell, the school’s science teacher. “This year we ran a voluntary club for the science fair, where I mentored 15 members for about 40 minutes per week at school, and they then all worked hard to produce a science investigation, mainly in home time,” she says. During the last six years, BIS has excelled at the event. “The standard of the kids’ work is improving a little every year,” Revell says. Ben Jones won the Living World section with Reusable or Revolting. Felix Shaw Bell won the Stanley Jober Cup for Excellence in Application of the Scientific Method with Do soccer goalies have a left or right bias? Kids vs weeds in unrelenting battle at Achilles Reserve
Good green fun… Lucia Kwok and Keira Somerville enjoy the planting Bayswater School’s Wai Care team has been looking after Achilles Creek for nearly 10 years, but the war on weeds is not letting up. Tradescantia fluminensis, commonly known as Wandering Jew, is flourishing alongside the creek’s muddy banks and the task of eradicating it is monumental. Spraying the weed is out of the question, at least for now, says Principal Lindsay Child, who recently asked Auckland Council for permission to do this. So the battle continues. Tradescantia has been an issue since the school joined the council-led, water-quality education programme in 2005. The task has been made more difficult as over the last couple of years it had fallen off the regular council maintainence programme. This year’s Wai Care team checks the water quality of the creek every month. It found that after heavy rain sediment from the muddy banks washes into the creek and deteriorates its water quality. The reason for it, they say, are the shallowrooted weeds that don’t help to hold up the bank. Gradually replacing the Tradescantia creeper with deeper rooted native trees and shrubs will hold the bank together and cause less run-off during wet weather. This September, a group of Year 5 and 6 students made a start by digging in 100 native plants along the lower part of the stream to begin strengthening its bank. But they had to make numerous weeding trips first. The team gathered around half a dozen gardening bags full of Tradescantia. The weed bags will be left to decompose, which will take between four and six months. Wai Care is a water-quality monitoring, education and action programme that Auckland Council runs with schools, businesses, community groups and individuals across the Auckland region. Local arts facilities to be reviewed by council A council proposal to “investigate” Devonport’s arts and culture facilities is a slap in the face for local arts organisations, say community leaders. The Community Facilities Network Draft

Plan says that the Depot, Rose Centre and Victoria Theatre may not be “fit for purpose.” Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen said he found the plan “a complete beat-up” and had no confidence in its value. Fellow board member Dianne Hale said it “sent shivers up the spine” adding it was of “grave concern to local arts groups.” Depot Artspace co-ordinator Linda Blincko said the plan was a threat to the
core of community by a “one-size-fits-all council” and did not appear to be based on the full facts. However council officer Anita CoyMacken assured the board that the plan did not intend to “make people nervous”. It was only focused on the “bricks and mortar” of facilities, which in Devonport’s heritage area could mean that more money needed to be invested in them, she said.

Outdoor Devonport library to open in November Another new library is coming to Devonport – this one will open in November, as part of the Devonport Arts Festival. Doug Young, a senior advertising creative, is creating an outdoor “communal library” for the festival opening day of November 9, with bookshelves, free membership and books, and open to the elements. “It will be a study with a real bookshelf and two real wall lights next to the bench around the war memorial, and there will be other parts painted onto the new library’s hoarding next to it. It won’t be an art piece, just a simple painting on a temporary wall,” he says. Young’s creation will remain there until the hoarding goes and the new library opens. “The idea is that while the old library is closed people can borrow a book from this shelf and put it back once they read it,” he says. Council and contractors Naylor Love are supporting the project. Festival organiser Toni van Tonder said wall lamps will be wired up as part of the project. Young’s wife Helene Dehmer has her own Devonport Arts Festival project only a few steps away from his. The creator of the 2011 Rugby World Cup Woolly Walkalong, and more recently the Woolly Poles along Victoria Road, is planning to create a Woolly Tree. Anyone can submit a piece of knitting and Dehmer and her helpers will use them to wrap the Pohutukawa tree in a patchwork blanket. “It can be any size, any colour, knitted or crocheted.

At the Auckland Band Association (ABA) competition two weeks ago, TGS Brass was awarded second place, with the winning band beating them by only two points. Alex King was awarded the cup for best solo.
A win for Grade 6 rugby
It was a great season end for our Grade 6 rugby team, who defeated Whangaparaoa by a whopping 73 points, to win the grade. The Year 9, 10 and 11 boys was the only TGS team to make the finals, winning 76-3 on the school field at the end of August. The boys scored 12 tries in total, with Lockie McNair, Lauchlan McKay,
Jake Coleman and George Looney each scoring two tries. This was backed up with eight conversions by Oscar Koller. Overall the team won 12 of their 15 games, and are ‘a team to watch in the future’, according to one of the parents, Mark Nola. BY CIARA CONNOLLY
Mollie Cornfield was awarded the cup for best under-18 solo and was also accepted for the NZ National Youth Band, and at his first attempt, conductor Edwin Dawson, was awarded the cup for best director.
Another Eureka finalist Emilie Sedelmayr in Year 12 will be representing the school during the Term 3 break at the Eureka National Symposium in Wellington. This is the second consecutive year a student from TGS has qualified as a national finalist for this event. The symposium is arguably New Zealand’s premier science competition for secondary and tertiary students, providing a forum for students to share and present their own scientific ideas and concepts to business leaders, politicians and eminent research scientists. Emilie is the only female secondary school student to have made the national final (on October 10th). Film premiers It was a highly anticipated night; a chance to showcase a selection of the best films produced by senior Media Studies students. After weeks of hard work, stress and probably a few breakdowns as well, they were finally ready to present their work at the ‘TGS On Screen’ night. Many past pupils, current pupils, parents and teachers arrived at the school library in the final week of term, to see what films the students had made for their high-stakes internal assessments. Year 11s made music videos, the Year 12s a documentary and the Year 13s a short neo-noir film, after learning about film noir throughout the year. The night was filled with absolutely amazing student work. In a new development, the audience was asked to vote for their favourite film from each Year in the category of ‘People’s Choice Award’. Midnight Journey was the most popular Year 11 music video made by Zachary Martin, who made the film for his own composition; Alia & Goldie by Augustine Morgan-Guthrie was the documentary most favoured at Year 12; and Cold Shoulder by Tim Phimester, Caroline Taylor and Henry Juer took out the honours at Year 13. A runner to watch out for
The Auckland Secondary Schools Road Race marks the end of the winter running calendar and Katherine Badham has had a stellar season. She placed first in the fourkilometre Intermediate race, where she faced stiff competition. The race was run at Bruce Pulman Park in Takanini in clear but windy conditions. Katherine came in at 15 minutes 35 seconds, a clear five seconds ahead of the next runner. The future looks exceptionally bright for Katherine, not only in road races but triathlon and cross-country also. Some of her season highlights include winning the Auckland Secondary Schools Triathlon and Duathlon Championships as well as taking gold in the North Harbour Cross Country Champs, as an intermediate girl. Katherine is an accomplished triathlete but in the last two years or so has extended her range and excelled. Her running strength and consistent results show that she is an athlete to be watched. Preschool fun times continue into spring The fun just keeps on going for local preschoolers. For the first time, the weekly indoor play sessions run by Devonport Community Coordinator Maria Teape have been extended to continue through spring until the outdoor summer sessions start. “We will be going through the school holidays and not finish until the beginning of November, when the outdoor Summer Fun sessions start,” says Teape. The need for more events emerged last year, she says. Caregivers said that it was hard to find things to do in the school holidays because activities often took a break then as well. “It came through strongly when last winter’s session ended that people were disappointed they had to wait several weeks until the summer ones started,” she says. • Winter Fun Preschool Play is free and runs every Tuesday from 9:30 until 11 am at Bayswater School Hall. SWAP OF TOP WOMEN AT NAVAL BASE A ceremony to mark the official Change of Command for the Royal New Zealand Navy base, HMNZS PHILOMEL, was held at 9.30am, Friday 3 October at the Devonport Naval Base. During the ceremony Captain Corina Bruce relinquished command of HMNZS PHILOMEL, handing over to the newly promoted Captain Maxine Lawes. The changing of command takes place when Captain Bruce states “You have the ship” and Captain Lawes responds with “I have the ship”. At this point, the Commissioning Pennant is hoisted, and the two women then exchange the HMNZS PHILOMEL symbol of command. Captain Bruce was the first female to fill the role of Commanding Officer PHILOMEL and Base Commander, and was promoted into the role in 2010. Her career has spanned almost 30 years; she enlisted in 1983 and took some time off to be a fulltime mum to her two daughters in the 1990s. Captain Lawes is a Supply Officer who

Aspiration of inspiration through perspiration

A new sports board called “Project Aspire” is aiming to raise the profile of sport at the school, which will flow onto achievement outside it, says Takapuna Grammar (TGS) Sports Director Sharon Davies. The board has a dozen members including school staff, senior management and locals who have various expertise in the sports arena. “They are all passionate about assisting with the development of sport at our school. It is an exciting project that will see TGS sport

Project Aspire team members from outside the school are: • Maria Clarke, a nationally recognised sports lawyer, recently appointed to the International Olympic Committee Sport and Law Commission. • Nick Jones, Research and Insights Manager for IAG strategy, a former TGS parent and hockey coach and one of the sports board’s instigators. • Callum McNair, North Harbour Rugby’s commercial manager, who has completed a number of Ironman races and has vast experi-
ence in running sports events, including Bike The Bridge. • Terry Nicholas, an accountant, sailor and the chair of the Yachting New Zealand Olympic Committee. • Graham Rush, the owner of Brand Partners Global, who has been involved with the North Shore Rugby Football Club for ten years, coaching junior rugby and managing the Senior Premiers. • School representatives are Simon Lamb (Principal), Carol Bashford (Deputy Principal), Terry Holding (Relationship Manager), Will Scovell (Head of PE), Sharon Davies (Sports Director), Melita Tu’isila (PE teacher and Dean) and Simone Stewart (Sports Coordinator).

Walking school… helicopter
Speedy trip to school… (from left) Ben Evans, Jasper Shanahan, Ella-Marie Fawcett-Grubner, Leah Harrison-Kerridge and George Crooksedge have just disembarked the chopper with Bayswater School principal Lindsay Child A new mode of school transport made its arrival at Bayswater School, but only for a one drop-off and take-off. A red and yellow helicopter touched down on the school field last Wednesday morning, dropping five students and principal Lindsay Child off for school. Then another five students and Year 5 teacher Marianne Coldham took off in the helicopter for their ride home from school. The Westpac Helicopter ride was a reward for the ten students who had been of exceptional help with the school’s $11,000
fundraiser for the rescue service. The rest of the school got to watch the take-off and landing up close and inspected the inside of the chopper after it had landed. The helicopter left for Bayswater from Mechanics Bay and took a spin around the Sky Tower on the way north. Jasper Shanahan (11) said he especially enjoyed seeing the colourful port containers from above. Ben Evans (9) said he was allowed to sit in the font, like a co-pilot. “I had a headset on and could hear what the pilots were saying to each other,” he said.

Five-year-old George Crooksedge mostly remembered the feeling of the chopper tilting. “We went to the side a bit and it made me feel sick,” he said. Year 5 teacher Marianne Coldham felt nervous about her first helicopter trip. “My son Michael is just finishing up his pilot training at Massey and he said there was nothing to worry about because helicopter didn’t have any G-Force. “But I came in trousers instead of a dress because of the wind from the rotor blades,” she said.
