Historic Masonic demolished under plastic wrapping The historic Masonic Tavern has been largely demolished with some of its Kauri boards recently sold at a timber recycling yard on Archers Rd, Glenfield. A peek behind the white plastic wrapped tightly around the main tavern building construction site reveals that little is left of

what was once one of Devonport’s oldest heritage treasures. The facades on Church St and King Edward Parade are gone, the roof is off and there is hardly any flooring to speak of. Some locals now fear a replica rather than a restoration will be the end result

of the controversial development, which community groups Save the Masonic and Devonport Heritage fought all the way to the Environment Court in 2011, without success. Devonport architect David Loughlin says a site worker told him the decision to demolTo page 7

WorkSafe New Zealand is investigating the demolition of a Narrow Neck house for potential asbestos contamination. A WorkSafe spokesperson says it “first became aware of a potential issue at the Seacliffe Ave site on August 22, when an inspector visited the property on an unrelated matter.” “WorkSafe immediately prohibited any further work on the site and ensured appropriate containment and control measures were put in place to minimise any risk,” he says. A local resident told the Flagstaff that during the demolition of 37 Seacliffe Ave, timber was piled on the front lawn of the property with a ‘free firewood’ sign on it. “Within a few days, the area was cordoned off by a tall metal fence wrapped in plastic with ‘keep out’ written on it in big letters. On one of the first days the fence was up, an asbestos-removal vehicle was parked outside,” the resident says. In the meantime, the property remains

Shady use of ratepayer money? One thousand dollars of public money will help pay for two sun umbrellas at the Belmont Park Racquets Club this summer. The club asked the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board for $2,500 to replace four of its old sun umbrellas, and was granted $1,000. The application stated that the club had no area with permanent shade and its old umbrellas were “broken and beyond repair”, and “so that our tennis community can enjoy watching their children and be adequately protected from the sun.” The club has a junior membership of more than 300 players, it says. It has previously received funding for the replacement of the synthetic grass, renewing the kitchen, creating an administration office, upgrade of a disabled toilet and an electrical upgrade of the facility. Local board member Mike Cohen, who is a member of the club, declared a conflict of interest for the agenda item and did not vote on the grant application.

Local rugby juniors to follow All Blacks to Samoa Around 30 North Shore junior rugby players will follow in the footsteps of the All Blacks’ first excursion to Samoa, on a special rugby-leavers’ trip to the island nation next July. Malu Tu’isila, High Chief of Lotopue and Hauraki resident, invited all keen North Shore Rugby Club Year 8 players to Samoa to celebrate the end of their junior playing careers. Tu’isila’s son Noah (11) played for North Shore’s J2 team as a second-five this year and is one of the boys going to Samoa. His younger brother Harry (9), an open-side flanker, and mum Melita are keen to go as well. The Tu’isilas live near Takapuna Grammar School, where Melita works. Malu married the long-time local 13 years ago. He came to New Zealand in 1983 and has been working as a personal trainer since 1993. As High Chief for the Lotopue district, he travels to Samoa about six times a year. Last week, the family made the invitation official with a presentation at the rugby club. Using Google maps, Melita pointed out Lotopue’s rugby and cricket fields and the surrounding fale, where Devonport kids will be staying along with the 150 villagers. Melita says Samoa’s simple pleasures and the people’s passion for rugby will be a life-changing experience for Devonport kids. “My nephew told me that the village kids are already organising trials for their best players to play you guys as a group. You will get to play their best,” Melita said. “You all should bring your cricket bats too and mix with the local kids after school. We swim at Lalomanu beach and make a trip to a rock slide, Namua Island and the Apia market. There won’t be any Wi-Fi,” she says. North Shore J2 coach Mark Fairbairn sees the trip as a unique finish to a player’s time at the junior club. “It will take them out of their comfort zone and be an opportunity to give back to another community. And we hope it will encourage the kids to come

Samoan connection… Melita and Malu Tu’isila, with their sons Noah (right) and Harry outside their home back to this club when they are 19,” he says. Fairbairn said that because of the Tu’isilas’ generous help, the trip would be more affordable than heading to the South Island. To bring the cost per player down to $300, the club aims to raise $25,000. “We don’t want to leave anyone at home who wants to come,” Fairbairn says. This is the second invitation the Tu’isilas have extended to local kids. This March, 13

Signs of the times – Devonport Museum launches heritage walk Heritage plaques will be popping up like daisies around Devonport this spring as part of an informal heritage walk. Devonport Museum is working on the initiative in time for Heritage Week. Six prototypes of postcard-sized metal plaques are being installed outside private residences. Each features a historic photo and a glimpse into the building’s history. Tim McBride, former Devonport Community Board member and a new member of the museum committee, is leading the campaign. He was inspired by plaques in other parts of the world. “They have them in London, but also in Foxton, and Golden Bay is just full of them. “And since we have a literary walk in Devonport already, I thought why not create a similar heritage walk with plaques,” McBride says. So far, the walk leads from 90 Victoria Road to 118 Calliope Road, then 2 Cambria Reserve, followed by 26 Vauxhall Road and then 6A and 62 King Edward Parade. McBride wants to add many a plaque to the map. “We hope locals respond enthusiastically and will line up to get a plaque for their house. And we hope that our commercial precinct will participate as well,” he says. A small plaque OPEN HOME HOME willOPEN cost property owners about $100. Devonport Museum has the ideal resources for the project. “It is a treasure trove of old photos of many buildings and we have amazing talent in our researcher Anna Clarke, and our walking-encyclopaedia committee members Rod and Helen Cornelius, Boyd Miller and Alastair Fletcher, our president,” he says. Property owners interested in investigating a plaque for their house should contact the museum at info@devonportmuseum.org.nz or 445 2661.

Restoration or complete rebuild?

with Donna Gustafson October 9 and 10 is the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) Pink Ribbon Street Appeal. Lynda Betts from Bayleys is once again tirelessly organising the stall (outside Westpac Bank) for this. Make sure you pop by to get a raffle ticket, buy a cupcake or make a donation. Some of the old Masonic timber seems to be set aside for the rebuild ish had been an economic one. “He said it wasn’t economic to restore the old timber,” Loughlin says. Auckland Council Manager Northern Resource Consents Ian Dobson says that the Masonic’s owner had recently applied for consent for “a level of demolition to various parts of the building, including the façade.” Some of the demolished timber has been stored away on-site, possibly to be reused. But other planks have been for sale at The Timber Recycling Company Limited. Former Belmont resident Ruth Jackson went there two weeks ago for material to build a bookshelf. “I chose some timber and said to the guy that I liked it because it looked a bit ‘heritagy’ and he said: ‘This has got heritage with bells on!’” “He was reluctant to tell me where it was from and that it was a bit controversial and it was from Devonport. I said, ‘Oh my God, it’s from the Masonic,’ and he said yes, it was,” Jackson says. Jackson had been involved in the Save the Masonic campaign and is the sister of Claudia Page, then a committee member of Devonport Heritage and now its chair. “I ended up buying five pieces of timber about 30 centimetres wide, three metres long and three to four centimetres thick that I had picked out of a pile of about 25. It was $40 per metre,” Jackson says. When the Flagstaff spoke to Timber Recycling’s Mostyn Hooper last Friday, he at first shook his head and shrugged his shoulders but then said he had been to the tavern for a site visit. “I would have loved to have had the Masonic timber, but most of it was completely borer-ridden. I only took a couple of pieces for firewood,” he said. Dobson says the 2011 Resource Consent granted by council “involved a significant amount of change to the facades of the original building, as these had been substantially modified in the past, and the consented development sought to return the facades

to a more traditional appearance, based on historic photographs.” The Environment Court decision required a heritage architect to be appointed by the consent holder (the Masonic owner) to supervise demolition works. “Council staff are monitoring the works and are currently arranging a site meeting with the appointed heritage architect and our heritage specialist to review the current works,” Dobson says. The North Shore District Plan describes the heritage scheduled parts of the Masonic Tavern as “the facades fronting both Church Street and King Edward Parade, and the fabric of the building to a sufficient depth back from the street facades to include the lower floor verandah, the wall at the back of the verandah and the line of the original exterior wall at the upper level.” Elements to be protected and restored include “existing exterior walls facing streets (including the walls at the back of the verandah) – subject to restoration; parapets; verandah form and bulk – subject to restoration; roof planes facing streets, west end and north end.” A 2008 engineering report on the Masonic’s façade protection, prepared by Devonport engineer Robert McGuigan says: “We are confident as structural engineers that the existing timber walls and parapets round the corner of King Edward Parade and Church Street can be safely retained to the original condition and incorporated into the new building structure. “The timber walls around the corner of King Edward and Church Street will remain on-site and will be restored back to their original state. Some internal flooring at ground and first floor level will remain in place,” it says. The Flagstaff contacted Jasmax, the architects for the development for comment but the leader of the project was not available for comment in time for our deadline.

So what does the NZBCF do? Amazing work that’s what... They save lives through breast health education, promote early detection through mammograms, support women with breast cancer through their 0800 BCNURSE advice line and undertake research for better treatment and greater survival, to name just a few of the amazing things they do! At Devonport Lingerie we are able to assist women who are recovering from breast cancer by helping them find a bra and prosthesis to make them feel both comfortable and confident. We have front closing post-surgical bras, breast prosthesis, pocketed bras, wire-free bras, swim forms and swimsuits, and we can assist with any entitlement you may have as we are approved by the Ministry of Health for this service.

Cyclists concerned about safety of new roundabout A roundabout cycle-lane proposal has local road cyclists Bronwyn and Mike Menhinick worried about its safety. Auckland Transport intersection improvement plans for Victoria and Calliope Roads have cyclists switch back and forth between riding on and off the road as they come up the hill; they will also have to walk their bikes over a zebra crossing. The couple, who contacted the Flagstaff after the roundabout plans were revealed, say such a lane would be confusing at best. “Do they want road cyclists to clip out and walk their bikes across the zebra crossing

and then clip back in?,” says Bronwyn, who is concerned it would be unsafe. “None of the road cyclists will do it; I know we won’t. People will ride on the road in front of cars instead and that would make things worse rather than better,” she says. Bronwyn and Mike have seven bikes between them and often cycle with the Devonport Espressos. “At first glance I wasn’t worried about the

Roundabout survey turns into monkey business

A faulty link to Auckland Transport online meant submitters could not post feedback on the roundabout plans in time. Bronwyn and Mike Menhinick said they Licensed REAA 2008 had left it too late to post their feedback by mail before the 18 September submission deadline. UCTiOn “So I tried to do it online instead, but couldn’t access the survey link. Then Mike searched all though the SurveyMonkey site but couldn’t find it. There was something wrong with the web address on the letter. The AT logo covered part of it,” says Bronwyn. “I called Auckland Transport (AT) first thing in the morning and a receptionist took my number. A project coordinator called me back while Rowan Renouf AREINZ I was out. I tried to call her back but her number 09 445 3414 or 021 736 683 didn’t So I rang back AT but they couldn’t VIEW FROM THE work. plans and we even agreed to have the car park outside our house removed to make room for the cycle lane. “Then I had another look and really studied it. You can’t mix road bikes and pushbikes and pedestrians on a cycle lane on the footpath. It’s not effective and not safe and just so wrong,” she says. “We are not against change, but it has to be for the better, not the worse.”

AT has been criticised for only asking neighbours, and not the wider community, to give them opinions on the proposed roundabout. As a neighbour and cyclist, Bronwyn says AT should open up its consultation. “This change will affect everybody in Devonport,” she says. Spokesperson Mark Hannan says AT has since launched a second round of consultation and extended the deadline until October 2. “It is not unusual to extend the date for consultation depending on public interest,” he said. AT wrote to 173 affected neighbours, including Devonport Primary School. In the second round, it also approached Emergency Services, Bayswater Community Committee, Devonport Business Association, Living Streets North Shore and the Navy for feedback, he said.

The Flagstaff Notes

October 2, 2015

By Rob Drent

The party didn’t really get started at North Shore United Football Club last Saturday night. Its first team had been odds-on to gain promotion to the Premier League all season, but were cruelly pipped to miss out by goal difference. It was an agonising wait for Shore as Tauranga City (promoted along with division winners Forrest Hill) had two catch-up games to play to round off the league competition. Tauranga had to win both matches and score 10 goals in the process to go ahead of Shore on goal difference. And that is exactly what it did, winning its last two matches 6-0 and 4-0 respectively. A gut-wrenching outcome for Shore, but with a young side, which played good football for much of the season, it is sure to bounce back stronger in 2016. Let’s hope more locals will turn out to watch the side in 2016, as home crowds were disappointing this year. Auckland Transport has once again assumed it knows more than Devonport locals who have lived in the suburb for decades, by consulting only with near neighbours on the proposed roundabout on Calliope Rd. It has now ex-

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 9

tended the consultation period to allow others to place submissions. If public transport improved in Devonport and more people used it, resulting in less car movements, is there a need to change the intersection at all? Like many others I’m getting used to the entrance to the ferry terminal being uncluttered by shops and offering unrestricted views from Windsor Reserve through the building to the city. Auckland Transport has already tried and failed to get one tenant in the revamped space. A cafe was ruled out in the new Devonport Library design, and aesthetically this may be the best option at the ferry terminal entrance too. A mobile coffee truck located on the Windsor Reserve side of the building would do the job just as well. Speaking of the Devonport Library here is the latest from council in response to what the final costs of the building are. From Darryl Soljan, Manager Customer Experience, North and West Libraries: “The main contract for Devonport Library was held by our construction partner, Naylor Love Ltd, who were paid $5.41 million. “This cost does not include design, fit-out, community consultation, consenting or operational costs of the temporary library, or costs incurred by the previous North Shore City Council.” A slight movement but no cigar in our quest to find the total cost of the project, which finished in February.

Go mental in the rental! Who doesn’t have a great story about holiday rental cars? Those vehicles under temporary stewardship that you can love or loathe. Cars that can form the core of an epic roadtrip, or sometimes….not. I remember hiring what I thought was a small 4WD on holiday in the Caribbean, and only worked out they actually made a two-wheel drive version of the Suzuki Escudo when I was stuck axle-deep in sand and attracting an amused local crowd. What fun we had.

Rental cars can be like a lovely holiday romance, a kindred spirit paired up with you to enhance and share in your special times, and be preserved for all eternity in your holiday photos to evoke wistful memories in later years. Or they can be a utilitarian hauler handed out by a stressed-out airport desk clerk to drag your brood from the bach to the beach. Your call, but I prefer the casual relationship version myself.

Now after a bit of hoop-jumping and formfilling we at Devcars are now delighted once again to be able to offer a small and tidy fleet of rentals. A little hatchback for Nana and Gramps, or an 8-seater for that kids party (lolly stains are extra). Book early for peak times. We even have a couple with towbars if needed. Catching up with

Karren Beanland After eight years at the helm of the Michael King Writers’ Centre on Mt Victoria, Karren Beanland is moving into the world of international finance. At the end of this month, Beanland will join the NZ Super Fund to organise the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds annual conference, to be held in Auckland late next year. The leap from literature and arts into the world of finance and events is exciting but not unfamiliar to Beanland. A long-time journalist, she has also been a union leader, press secretary to Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer (where she met husband David Slack) and managed communications for Fletcher Challenge and The Ports of Auckland. In 2007, Beanland read about the newly established Michael King Writers’ Centre in the Flagstaff and sent in her CV. She has managed the facility ever since, while it grew and established itself on the national literary scene. Working in literature and the arts at the centre has “felt like home,” and meeting New Zealand writers from Eleanor Catton to Martin Edmond and Ian Wedde has been a real treat, Beanland says. “Also, the visiting writers who come up to stay with us has been a very interesting group of people,” she says. For the rest of October, Beanland is splitting her time between the centre and the NZ Super Fund.

Moving on… Karren Beanland, after eight years at the top of mountain “It helps with the transition and gives me a chance to finish our annual residential workshops held over Labour Day weekend. This year’s theme is Writing War, in acknowledgement of the First World War centenary,” she says. But from November onwards, she will be taking the ferry to work, which will give her more time for reading books. “I have read a great deal of New Zealand writing and I really

enjoy it. Books are in a difficult phase right now and the continued support for New Zealand writing is great to see. “I love reading stories about our own country and it is important that we interpret our place, because no one else will do it,” Beanland says. The NZ Super Fund is a government agency tasked with prefunding the rising cost of universal retirement benefits in New Zealand. Adrian Orr, another Devonport local, is its CEO.

Busy site of childcare centre must require a notified consent 30 metres; • A primary school within 60 metres; • Adjacent commercial shops with council-required parking bays for which owners pay; • The residential nature of Victoria Rd, with slope of the mountain and traditional dwellings, giving limited off-street and highly contested on-street parking for rates paying owners. AT must hold stats on vehicle numbers, but perhaps not on pedestrian use. Living opposite the proposed drop-off centre, we can vouch for high-use foot traffic. Ferry commuters walk, skate, cycle, and run to the wharf. Parents, grandparents and nannies hurry pupils to nearby primary schools. Intermediate, secondary and uni students in groups wait for their buses.

Daryl Veal’s letter (Flagstaff Sept 18th) regarding 159 Victoria Rd suggests council will not consult stakeholders about a commercial business that will have major repercussions for locals. Is it possible that Auckland Transport, currently proposing an on-road cycle path on a narrow roundabout in Victoria Rd, is giving the green light to large numbers of vehicles gaining access to a private development a short way along that same road? Has a council planner considered the streetscape at 159 Victoria Rd? It includes: • A main road; • A bus route (including school buses) and bus stop adjacent to 159; • A dedicated cycleway on the footpath opposite 159; our road junction within

Walking groups, dog groups and classes on school outings use the footpath, as do mums with babies, toddlers, and strollers. Recreational young cyclists whose parents forbid them to use on-road cycle lanes are also on the footpath. Navy Seals and new Navy recruits, midweek fundraisers practising mini marathons, shoppers with trolleys or mobility scooters… And we have not yet mentioned local residents, churchgoers, international chess players, nor those using the nearby post box or buying a Herald from the dairy. We are sure a need must be there if this is to be a commercial venture. But to consider non-notified consent to this particular location seems to flout all planning principles. B & M Hayes

Why the secrecy? Wider consultation needed on key roundabout an official diagram of the proposed works). Further, Auckland Transport has no information on its website about the roundabout and, when I called to request a copy of the design, their representative could find nothing. I hope local people will ask for wider consultation, because I see some real issues with the design. For example, traffic will be slowed enough to cause a real bottleneck. This is because there are no turning lanes to assist flow, and I don’t think the addition of one compulsory stop for cars entering the village will appreciably help. The uphill route out of Devonport will

I heartily agree with a comment in your last issue, stating the limited consultation about the proposed Calliope Rd/Victoria Rd roundabout was “outright rude and insulting to the Devonport Community”. Why the secrecy? After all, the majority of people leaving and entering our village centre will have to traverse this intersection, so most locals will be affected. Auckland Transport has chosen to limit feedback to neighbours only, apparently with the exception of a cycling organisation. (I am grateful for the latter from one perspective, in that Cycle Action Auckland’s website appears to be the only means of obtaining

require the most manoeuvring, and could cause a real issue for larger vehicles, such as buses and trucks. If the current curve has caused enough of a safety hazard for crash barriers to be installed on the corner, I dread to think of the risk with the new layout, which requires their complete removal. Yes, there is a problem with this intersection, largely for those trying to turn right out of Calliope Rd. But this design is a piece of very expensive overkill. Surely it would be cheaper and more effective to install a set of on-demand traffic lights? Lyndsay Brock

Flower beds important part of Devonport’s character If Devonport loses its beds of annuals, one more part of the Edwardian heritage that characterises our main street will have been lost. Thousands of photographs have gone round the world showing the Esplanade fronted by colourful displays of massed flowers – a little part of NZ that modelled itself on an English marine suburb, at a particular point in time. So much has gone, and what remains is constantly threatened – the wooden bus shelters, old-style seats and stone kerbs. Council, businesses and tourism providers are always keen to promote heritage, when all that is needed is to leave what is there to speak for itself. Last year our local board members became supportively involved when the shell paths were threatened. As a result that part of our heritage has been kept. Now we must make sure another possible loss is prevented. Joyce Fairgray

Felix Carter-Bell goes on a literary adventure The latest addition to Devonport’s literary tradition is 13-year old Felix Shaw-Bell, whose book The Adventures of Phi: The Nuclear Logic Cell is a sci-fi adventure story for young adults. Felix had a proper book launch last month at Belmont Intermediate School’s book week, where he gave a short speech and sold copies of his work. The book is now on general sale at Paradox Books. It’s a story about Phi, a young member of the Estron species, who is sent to another galaxy to help fix computers. When he uncovers some shady practices involving plasma guns, he is kidnapped and mind-swiped with a “neural scrub”. Phi’s predicaments on Magnum Luna ring true with human earthly teens. Felix says the seed for the book was planted a year ago in Leonie Bloor’s Year 7 class where he preferred maths and science to English, but took up her challenge to better his writing skills by writing a short story. A year later, this became the first of nine chapters Felix finished with his Year 8 teacher Deb Dickinson. Felix says he learned there was method to writing a book. “I had written stories before but often I would write a page and nothing much would happen, so I knew I had to plan ahead more,” he says.

“I started with brainstorming the setting first and found the names of the characters in Greek letters. And then I did a brainstorm for the plot. I started with chapter titles and then stretched those into a paragraph for each chapter and so on.” He even ended up with footnotes. Class mate Anna de Boyett illustrated the 38-page story with input from Felix. “I decided which scenes should be illustrated and she decided which picture would work best,” he says. His cousin Anthony Carter-Bell designed the cover. Printing the book was tricky, with self-publishing companies too pricey, but Takapuna Grammar School offered to help. “I supplied the paper and the cardboard for the cover and they have a very good printing facility,” says Felix. “I left the end of the book on a cliffhanger and will start planning a sequel in these school holidays,” he says. Felix also likes to play soccer and learn about computer programming, and he reads widely. His favourite book is Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. • The Adventures of Phi is available for sale at Paradox Books and on loan from the local writers section of Devonport Library.

Interview

October 2, 2015

Living a life alongside literary treasures Iain Sharp is likely to be the only New Zealander who has interviewed Salman Rushdie three times. The librarian and journalist has also written a biography of Charles Heaphy and crafted many a poem in his life. As a books editor for the Sunday Star-Times and Metro Magazine, he perfected the art of drawing out authors from Peter Carey to Margaret Atwood. Now it’s his turn. Sharp spoke to Maire Vieth. The magic of books is part of Iain Sharp’s life. For the past 15 years he has worked as a manuscript librarian at the Sir George Grey Special Collection, in Auckland’s public library. Three books published in New Zealand last month alone have been researched at the collection, says Sharp. Among them Tessa Duder’s biography of Sarah Mathew, the wife of Felton Mathew, and William Hobson’s first Surveyor General. Sharp helped launch the book at Devonport’s Michael King Writers’ Centre last Sunday. Sharp says of working on the collection: “I feel privileged to be handling these rare treasures, because here we are in the South Pacific but yes, we have a first folio of Shakespeare, we do have medieval manuscripts and a rich New Zealand history as well.” In the digital age where everything seems to be just a keystroke away, part of the beauty of the collection is that literary artefacts can be seen first hand. “Visitors don’t need academic credentials to take a close look. They can just come in off the street, though it is sometimes useful to let us know in advance,” Sharp says. So passionate is he about the archive that in 2007 he wrote Real Gold, a scholarly book about its many treasures. While Sharp loves the history encased in the old books, for many years he was at the cutting edge of contemporary literature as well. He was the books editor on national publications and interviewed literary heavywieghts such as Salman Rushdie (three times) Peter Carey and Margaret Attwood. Three years ago Sharp moved to Devonport after living most of his life in the industrial Ellerslie-Penrose area across the bridge. “I’m not going to knock my old neighbourhood, but Devonport feels like a haven of Edwardian civilisation,” he says.

Cutting along the literary edge…Iain Sharp Sharp knows his stuff. In 2008, he wrote a biography of Charles Heaphy, the English-born painter and explorer. The book was shortlisted for the Montana Book Awards in 2009. During our interview in a nook of the Esplanade Hotel, he says: “Heaphy must have been sitting here at one point. There was an earlier hotel here called The Flagstaff (it burnt down) and I know Heaphy was in the Flagstaff Hotel on 18th February 1875, because he said so at some point,” Sharp adds. “Mount Cambria Reserve was called Mount Heaphy too at one point.” Sharp arrived in New Zealand from Glasgow aged seven, the son of working-class Scots. His own story is inextricably wound up with Auckland’s history. In 1961, it took the Sharps five days of flying to get here from Glasgow. Auckland Airport was still four years away from opening. When the plane landed at Whenuapai airport, the Ngāpuhi widow of Sharp’s deceased uncle and her whanau were waiting to greet

the pale Scots. “It was a bit of a culture shock for my parents. The airport looked like a big open field and they were completely unused to seeing Polynesian people,” he says. The Sharps moved in next door to the family, into an old Ponsonby villa on Hargreaves St, now a road full of office and apartment buildings at the bottom of College Hill. “It was a residential street then. My uncle had been a plumber and at the time, he had done the plumbing of all the nearby houses,” says Sharp. Within a year, the family moved to Greenlane and Ellerslie. “I went to Cornwall Park School when I was younger, then Remuera Intermediate and Penrose High School. We were living on the border of what was then the safest Labour seat, which was Onehunga, and the safest National seat, Remuera. In places, it literally switched from one to the other on the same street,” he says. Sharp’s parents were working-class people and Labour voters. His father was a qualified fitter and turner, a skilled migrant who came

TGS golfers Cole Manson and Bridget Connolly

It has been a great year on the greens for Bridget Connolly and Cole Manson, Takapuna Grammar School’s (TGS) top golfers. In August Cole was one of three winners in the New Zealand-wide Holden Golf World “Play Like a Pro” competition, a TV show hosted by Mark Leishman and Laura McGoldrick. “My mum had secretly nominated me for the prize and they came with the cameras and surprised me while I was practising at the Waitemata golf course on Sunday,” he says. Cole (14), on a six handicap, won a number of prizes in the competition, but the main one is entry to the 2016 New Zealand PGA Pro-Am Championship at Remuera Golf Club, where he gets to play alongside Ryan Fox. He started playing golf three years ago for safety reasons. “I was too accident-prone for other sports,” he says. After he broke his arm playing rugby and his foot jumping into a pool, he started playing golf with his mother and grandmother. “Then I started playing with my mates after school and finally I had a few lessons.” Bridget is in her last year at school and has been selected for the Junior Interprovincial Competition and will be playing this week for North Harbour in Rotorua. With a six handicap, Bridget played well in the North Harbour Provincial Match Play In the swing for summer… Cole Manson and Bridget Connolly in the womens open division, winning two games and losing two. “I was pretty happy ending up as runner-up in the flight division. It was all off the sticks; I was playing people way better than me,” she says. Bridget has been playing golf since she was eight years old. “My dad (Phil Connolly) was practising in the backyard and I wandered out and started chipping,” she says. Golf became a huge part of Bridget’s life when she began entering competitions four years ago. The 17-year-old spends many hours each week practising on her own on the Waitemata golf course. On weekends, she plays tournaments all around the region. “I am competitive and determined and I hate losing,” she says. Her role models are professional golfer and New Zealander Ryan Fox and Ireland’s Rory McIlroy. “Oh and Lydia Ko of course,” she says. Bridget is still weighing up her options for next year. “I either want to study science at uni or take a gap year and concentrate on golf and try to win a major tournament and come down to a scratch handicap,” she says. Cole and Bridget play two tournaments for TGS per year, says Bridget. They both look forward to summer and Daylight Saving. “Golf is an all-season sport and you often practise on your own for three hours and a game can last four, so you really have to be committed, and winter, when it’s dark, cold, rainy and windy, can make it tough,” Bridget says.

Bryan Jackson – a larger-than-life character

Long-time entreprenuer Bryan Jackson, who owned the eclectic Jackson’s Muzeum in Devonport for more than a decade, has died. The museum closed in 2005 and the collection was sold off at public auction to pay back debts. Somewhat in character, Jackson was one of the main bidders, buying back his favourite pieces, just as he had in a previous auction in 1998. At its peak the museum was a colourful part of Devonport’s main street. Housed in the old post office, it contained more than 15,000 exhibits, including an English pub bar. The outside walls of the museum were often plastered with copies of letters Jackson sent councils and local authorities as he battled bureaucracy and perceived wrongs. After the museum closed, Jackson continued to live in Devonport and was often seen out and about with his wife Robynne and their two poodles. The museum closure marked the end of an era, which had seen a lifetime of collecting – as well as wheeling and dealing – for Jackson. Born to working-class parents George and Edith Jackson, he grew up in Orakei. At six, Jackson said he had his first money-making venture as the undisputed king of marbles at Orakei Primary School. Jackson told the Flagstaff in a 2005 interview: “I brought home three pounds and 12 shillings, which was a fortune in 1938. My Dad went up to the headmaster and asked if I could have possibly got that much money and he said ‘yes - he wins and sells marbles’ “The whole (Jackson’s Muzeum) collection started with those marbles, so really I’ve been at the museum non-stop since the age of six,’ he told the Flagstaff. Jackson went on to Auckland Grammar School, but left after attaining School Certificate. He loved caravaning holidays with his parents, and by the time he was 18, using money from selling stamps, coins, marbles and firewood, Jackson had purchased around 60 rental caravans and a new business was taking off.

Collector and colourful character… Bryan Jackson at Jackson’s Muzeum He sold his first caravan for £200 in 1950, and is said to have sold 7643 by the time he closed Bryan Jackson’s Caravans in 1989. He built, sold and restored caravans, but the biggest earner was rentals. A spin-off from the caravan business was boatbuilding, and Jackson developed a caravan and catamaran hybrid called the ‘caracat’. “The idea came from wanting to go away on holiday in a caravan that went on water,” Jackson said. After much scepticism from critics in the boating world, “Caracat Too”, the second prototype, proved itself by winning the 100 Mile Auckland Offshore Power Boat Race in 1964. The caravan business also facilitated Jackson’s obsession with collecting and provided a home for his first museum (1969 to 1973) at his headquarters in Mt Wellington. Jackson fully realised his dream of owning a museum when he bought the old post office on Victoria Rd for $750,000, and in 1992 moved with his wife Robynne to Devonport. After four years of restoration – largely funded by profits from caravans – the derelict post office was converted into Jackson’s

Muzeum. Despite many conflicts with North Shore City Council over the renovation and various exhibits placed on the rooftop and the street, it opened to the public in 1995. The museum was dedicated to Jackson’s eldest brother Rowan, who was a pilot in the Battle of Britain during the Second World War and was killed in action. Museum was spelled with a ‘z’ because it was unique in its exhibits, lighting and display, said Jackson in the Flagstaff interview. Most of the museum exhibits were put up for auction in 1998 because of Jackson’s ailing health and a shortage of funds. But in a bizzare twist, Jackson was at the sale buying back his most-prized pieces after Robynne had a cash windfall. “I can’t help collecting things. I’ve just been to Tasmania and brought back a box of bits and pieces even though the museum is closed,” he said in 2005. To the end Bryan Jackson remained his own man. His death notice in the New Zealand Herald listed his four wives as Maureen, Rita, Tandy and Robynne In 2014 he published a full page personal advert in the Flagstaff in 2014 seeking a companion.

both the students and the teacher/parent helpers. The six-day course at the Hillary Outdoors base at Tongariro included activities such as caving, sea kayaking, high ropes, stream walking, snow sports, alpine tramping, abseiling and snow caving. Not only that, but More than 50 elite Year 10 athletes left the group of athletes also explored the unthe comforts of their warm beds for a week knowns of Tongariro during the overnight at Tongariro. Strong winds and torrential adventures and spent the night in both rain were the least of their worries while bushes and caves. With the variety of activities available completing activities that challenged the mental, physical and emotional strength of the students developed leadership skills

and gained lifelong friendships. The whole adventure subtly pushed the athletes out of their comfort zones and left them with memories they will never forget. “It was something I probably won’t get an opportunity to do again; I made so many unforgettable memories, developed new friendships and gained skills that I will be able to use for the rest of my schooling career. It was a remarkable experience. I am so glad I had the opportunity to take part,” Anna Jacobs said. BY SERENA YOUNG

A challenging season ahead The TGS Rowing club is facing a number of challenges this season. The number of rowers is down on last year, there is about to be a new Director of Coaching, and there is uncertainty surrounding the future of their current “home” at Bayswater wharf: these are all providing the hard-working volunteer parent committee with a few headaches. Despite all that, there is great enthusiasm and optimism amongst the student rowers and their families. The club says farewell to Director, Mike Hill, and wishes him well as he leaves for Finland in late October. A new Director will be appointed very soon and in the meantime the team of volunteer crew coaches are well under way with fitness training. The next major event is the organisation and running of the very first regatta on the rowing calendar – the TGS/Waitemata regatta on Lake Pupuke on October 24th.

A junior crew in action at Lake Pupuke in February. With at least 60 race events, the search for race sponsorship has begun in earnest. If, as you read this, you would like to be a race sponsor, just phone the school sports office to speak to Mike Hill (up to October 16). He will be delighted to put you in touch with the fundraising team. Rowing is an expensive sport but the benefits in terms of fitness, attendance at train-

ing camps, travelling to regattas, erg training and the chance to row at Lake Ruataniwha, near Twizel, are great drawcards for aspiring athletes. And with so many world-class New Zealand crews winning world championship and Olympic medals, the opportunity for sporting glory is an incentive to begin at secondary school level.

Student-made films impress large crowd Parents, students, teachers and members of the community congregated in the library for the annual TGS Media Studies screening of student-made films last week. The highly anticipated event featured 20 student-made films. Year 11 students created music videos for New Zealand songs, Year 12 students made documentaries and Year 13 students wrote and directed short ‘neo-noir’ films. The films are the result of months of hard work, writing, filming and editing. Over 100 people laughed and, in some instances, cried together. Year 9 student Sienna Norman said of the event: “I really enjoyed The audience gathers the creative and different ideas of the films. It made me excited to take Media Studies in the future.” The evening ended with the votes for the People’s Choice Award, in the Year 11, 12 and 13 categories, and an award for the most votes overall. Andy Song, Mirabelle Field and AJ Balmer’s short film Her won both the Year 13 category and the overall People’s Choice Award. AJ Balmer said: “It’s so incredibly rewarding to see something you worked so hard at, that we all shed blood, sweat and tears on, being shown in front of a big audience of friends, family and the wider school Media guru and Film Evening organiser, Mr Daniel McQuillan community.” The Year 12 award went to Carla Te Paa, for her touching documentary Independ- category. The importance of saving for our future The final Achievers’ Breakfast for the year acknowledged students for their outstanding achievements in arts, academia, and sports. There were a large number of students from all year groups, and their proud parents, present for the morning. Each student’s achievement was read out and the magnitude of achievement – from golf to science competitions to performing arts – was astounding and truly reflected the talents of the student body. The guest speaker was Adrian Orr, whose

speech was as hilarious as it was educational. Mr Orr is CEO of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund. He talked at length about what this job requires, using both grandparents and parents alike in a demonstration in which five parents had to hoist a grandparent onto their shoulders. This was comical while also demonstrating his point about the way working men and women support funding for pensions. He proceeded to detail how that number would drop in coming years, and the role the Superannuation Fund plays

in helping rectify this. His talk also had a more serious message about making sure you love, and are good at, what you do. He talked about the importance of playing to your strengths and working in a job you enjoy and a field you can improve and advance in. The breakfast overall was a fantastic occasion, with amazing food and a great guest speaker. It’s an enjoyable and unique way through which TGS celebrates its successful students and teachers. Thank you Devonport for your generosity to Corey Jane and Jackie, and Annette Coleman from Harcourts (Devonport branch) took it upon themselves to organise a fundraising event to help raise funds for local Devonport residents Sue and Trevor Allen’s grandson Corey Sands, who in October last year suffered a life-changing injury where a gym accident has left him a quadriplegic. Corey Sands is a young, humorous and intelligent man. He has a twin brother called Callum, along with younger brother Bayden and sister Aimee (17-year-old twins also) and another younger sister Madeleine (aged 6).

It’s a busy household. Corey has gone from being an energetic 18-year-old to a future in a wheelchair with no movement from his shoulders and chest down, with the exception of some bicep movement. It is almost impossible to comprehend for his family, friends and all those who care about him. It was a tragic accident that could have happened to anyone and it was a cruel blow to a young person just starting his life. Corey is now learning to take each day at a time, whilst medical professionals are working on helping his body deal with the terrible injury. The reliance on family and friends to provide moral and mental support remains critical. Corey is now back living at home with 24/7 care being required. He has spent eight months between Middlemore hospital and the spinal injury unit and the outlook is that he will be a quadriplegic for the rest of his life. Together with the emotional toll on the family, there will be a financial cost that will be difficult to bear outside of what ACC will fund. Providing ongoing care and rehabilitation along with adaptive aids and equipment to help Corey cope and function as best as possible will be critical to providing a positive future. This ongoing care and lifelong support requires the help of others over and above ACC and the family are unable to do

this alone. Jane and Jackie and Annette Coleman (and the Devonport Harcourts team) coordinated a fundraising event where the Devonport community rallied together to make a real difference for Coreys’ future. The Harcourts team orchestrated this event in their own time and created an evening that was completely professional and so polished it was hard to believe that it was organised without event consultants. It was run at the Bayswater bowling club and was extremely successful. There were 96 silent-auction items and 22 live-auction items donated by corporates/groups and individuals. The ladies organised an incredible array of fantastic prizes, and to all who donated prizes an enormous thank you for your generosity. The family very much appreciates the time and effort Jane, Jackie and Annette (along with the entire Devonport Harcourts team) put into running such an overwhelmingly successful fundraising event. The event raised a phenomenal $34,500. Your collective efforts will make a huge difference in Corey’s future rehabilitation and care and for that Corey and the family are so very thankful. It has been amazing to see such a strong community come to life for such a great cause. Corey Sands and family

Spring at the garden… Chas Burgess (left) chair of the garden committee, demonstrated his pizza-making skills, and (above) Tania Hetz welcomes her friend Lesley Kahn to the spring festival Spring came sunny side up at Ngataringa Organic Garden’s Equinox Festival, where garden volunteers celebrated the biannual equinoxes when day and night are of equal length. Tania Hetz is one of many regulars at the garden. She has been coming for almost three years and now grows much of what her family eats. “I grow my onions, kale, beets, spinach,

silverbeet and lettuce here and buy less and less elsewhere,” she says. The garden has become a second home for her daughters Tamara and Chiara. Tamara’s thumbs are turning green fast. This season, she has already harvested a crop of rainbow radishes and the carrots in her raised bed are thriving. “I put seeds in there, thinned them and then fed them warm comfrey tea to keep

them healthy,” she says. The garden committee’s chairman Chas Burgess is another dedicated gardener. He drops in most mornings to feed the chickens. “Any time after sunrise is good. That’s when they start to get restless,” he says. He and Hetz are joined by many more volunteers every week, who enjoy nurturing themselves as well as their plants.

Williams family cheer on Wales’ historic win over England

Diehard fans… at the Rugby World Cup, Kate and Evan Williams

Two of Devonport’s most promising rugby players’ trip to support Wales at the Rugby World Cup was made all the more worthwhile when the Red Dragons upset England 28-25 last weekend. A month-long trip to Wales is how the Williams clan is celebrating the end of the New Zealand rugby season. Originally from Wales, they are heading back to Britain to visit family but are really there to watch the Rugby World Cup. After moving to New Zealand 13 years ago, dad Gareth is still cheering on his old home country. He and son Evan will follow the Welsh team around. Mum Angela and daughter Kate will watch the games on TV with the grandparents. What about the final at Twickenham? “We will be back in New Zealand then, deliberately, because we know that Wales won’t play in the final,” Gareth said before they left. The Williams family is mad about rugby, with both Gareth and Angela playing. But it is their kids who are turning into stars. Evan (13) has just been crowned North Shore Rugby Club’s top J1 player. He is following in his sister’s footsteps. Kate, now in Year 11 at West Lake Girls High School, received the trophy two years ago. Evan plays in the North Harbour Under-14 boys rugby team and Kate is in the Under-18 girls team. Kate also plays touch rugby for New Zealand in the Under-15 girls team. The siblings train most days, except Sundays. Is that because of church? “No, rugby is our religion,” says Gareth.

TGS Rowing stays put as Bayswater ferry terminal treads water until at least 2025 The Blue Shed will remain the home for Takapuna Grammar School’s rowing club for the foreseeable future. A recent Auckland Transport (AT) report requested by Devonport-Takapuna Local Board states that AT currently has no plans to progress the upgrade of the Bayswater ferry terminal until 2025. The report states: “Auckland Transport does not have the funding for the Bayswater Ferry Terminal in the current LTP [Long Term Plan, 2015-2025], and envisages that the Takapuna Grammar Rowing Club will continue to be accommodated in the Blue Shed until such time as funding is identified to progress the Ferry Terminal Development.” The rowing club did not want to comment on the new development, but Bayswater Community Committee Chair Gay Richards said she had not been kept in the loop by AT and had mixed feelings about the news. “It’s not surprising, but it’s disappointing. Given that, it is good the rowing club can stay until the space is needed,” she said.

Birdwatchers keep eyes peeled for Devonport’s new resident

Community recycling a step closer at 27 Lake Road Part of 27 Lake Road has been officially saved from potential sale and will be turned into a community recycling centre. On August 24, Panuku Development Auckland (formerly Auckland Council Properties Limited) transferred 5,090 square metres of land, previously considered for sale, to council’s Infrastructure and Environmental Services portfolio. This section of 27 Lake Road is currently used to sell garden supplies and as a refuse and recycling centre. But Auckland Council wants to turn it into “demonstration site” for a new community approach. The new centre is anticipated to be operational from July 2016 onwards, the land transfer report says. The Flagstaff understands that in June a local group submitted a proposal to run the new centre. Council spokesperson Joanna Glaswell says a decision on who runs the centre won’t be made until late this year or early next year. She says Panuku Development Auckland continues to manage the other council land at 27 Lake Rd. A community lease is in place at the Claystore. Council land at 27 Lake Road measures 12,636 ha and has a capital value of just under $3.5 million.

One of Devonport’s newest arrivals is proving a treat for bird lovers. A New Zealand kaka has been sighted around the village over recent weeks. KakaWatch New Zealand, a website for kaka spotters, regularly posts updates on sightings of the native parrot. One Facebook post on Friday 11 September said: “This Kaka sighted in my small front garden in Devonport. One has also been spotted on Mt Cambria.” Di Miller says she has seen the parrot for a week or so at Mt Victoria cemetery and on Mt Victoria at around 8.30am and 3.30pm each day when walking her daughter to and from school. The kaka was feeding and flying between the flowering trees on the mountain, she said. Another report confirms afternoon sightings of kaka from September 1 to 4 on a cherry blossom tree at Mt Victoria cemetery. A resident heard about similar sightings in August on Church Street in cherry blossom trees near the gate to Mount Cambria Reserve. Albert Rd residents have also posted seeing kaka across the fence of their backyard. “The kaka was roosting in a karaka tree on Mt Cambria Reserve, just the other side of the boundary fence. We see a lot of kereru, kakariki etc but

Distinctive… a kaka parrot has moved into Devonport this was unmistakably something completely different – a big, bulky, dark-green parrot,” they said. Another resident said he watched two or three tui chasing the kaka. It was 10 years since he had last seen one at Mt Cambria Reserve. Kaka have also been spotted at Waitemata Golf Club. “Kaka seems to have taken up residence there. I saw it today and about three weeks ago, assuming it’s the same bird.” Another resident spotted a kaka looking for food in his Albert Rd garden on June 8.
