Interview: film-maker Karl Lear… p16
The new skatepark, toilets and playground planned for Ngataringa Park have been put on hold, after a council report found the contents of the soil too dangerous for any development. The site “needs to be remediated in its entirety ahead of any development,” a summary of the report said. Tests were undertaken in the area next to Ngataringa Community Garden in preparation for the
toilet block and the results have put all aspects of the project “on hold.” Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member and parks portfolio holder Grant Gillon said the board was disappointed but “keeping an eye” on the project. “We don’t want to take it off the agenda because if it’s not in the Long Term Plan, we won’t be able to fund it,” he said. The proposed site is on reclaimed land that was
used as Devonport’s dump, until it was capped with concrete and, in 1994, became a public park. The skatepark was built on top in 2000 with funding from Devonport Rotary. It has been a popular spot for local skateboarders, scooter riders and BMX cyclists ever since. For years it has had problems. Structural failures due to subsidence have caused drainage issues To page 11

Auckland Transport puts branding ahead of community
FUNERAL SERVICES Your local funeral home
A Stanley Bay resident who asked for a community noticeboard to be installed at the new Stanley Bay ferry building has been given the thumbs down in the name of consistent branding. An Auckland Transport (AT) report states that keeping transport facilities free of advertising is “the standard across the region, including our bus stations,” and AT said that they will “therefore not install a noticeboard at this time.” However, AT’s stance was opposed by Mike Cohen, the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair, who has joined the push for community boards in ferry terminals. “I am totally in favour of it. In fact, I have asked for one for the Devonport ferry terminal

myself,” he says. “Noticeboards have a real benefit for the community and via the Devonport Peninsula Trust we could manage them and keep commercial advertising out. I have not given up on them yet,” he said.
Parking petition support Pharmacist Allan Pollock received the full support of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board when he presented a petition of 1,052 signatures in protest against the possible removal of car parks in Belmont. The petition was a reaction to Auckland Transport’s (AT) Draft Parking Discussion Document, which proposes to remove onstreet parking on city arterial roads, such as Lake Road. Local Board advisor Chris Dee said AT staff had assured him the strategy would not be a “one-size-fits-all model” and would leave room for regional variation. AT manager Marilyn Nichols said Pollock’s petition had been taken on board as a submission.

Murdoch received the club’s 2014 McKenty Family Award for hardest working forward. His brother Angus was in the Roller Mills side last year, along with Lockie McNair who is now playing in the Under-14 North Harbour side. Roller Mills is a northern region competition

TGS and Rotary chippies off the old Block
A stone’s throw from last year’s Block homes is the front of Takapuna Grammar School, where a new house will be constructed for a South Auckland family of seven - and local residents can help build it. Last week, Devonport Rotary launched a collaboration with Habitat for Humanity and Takapuna Grammar (TGS). Volunteers will build a five-bedroom, 110 sqm house within 16 days in term one next year and they are looking for wider community support. Devonport Rotary President Graham Rowe says the prominent Lake Road site is symbolic and strategic. “Its visibility will help us to raise awareness and hopefully encourage people to pitch in,” he says. Anyone can contribute, from donating drill bits, a packet of nails or a smoke alarm to sponsoring a window, roof or bale of insulation, by pitching in with labour or by attending a fundraising dinner at The Officers Mess in March 2015, says Rowe. TGS Year 12 IB student Danielle Desvaux de Marigny sees the project as an opportunity: “It’s a fantastic way to help those less fortunate than ourselves and the opportunity to build a house while you are still in school is not something you often get.” This will be the 101st house Habitat for Humanity has built in Auckland. Once finished, it will be trucked to Clendon Park, for a family to live in. TGS relationship manager Terry Holding says joining with Devonport Rotary and Habitat for Humanity encouraged students to look outside the school to offer service. The project is the idea of Rotarian Libby Boyd, who heard about Onehunga High School’s involvement in a similar project in 2013.

Making Devonport safer – through the Flagstaff
For many years the Flagstaff has published a free column – On the Beat – supplied by the local community constable. In the early years it worked well: a Devonport-based constable would provide a brief update on crime in the area over the past couple of weeks and offer pertinent tips on ways to keep the community safer. In recent times the column has become almost irrelevant - full of standard advice such as locking your garden shed and the importance of wearing cycle helmets. All commonly available information. Even basic information on burglary statistics in the Devonport area is no longer forthcoming, apparently due to a change in police policy. So
with other more newsworthy stories to print, I decided to can the column. Last month we ran a story about two neighbours who had been burgled and we received a huge response. If the police are not going to take a more proactive stance on crime and its prevention in the community, we thought why don’t we do it ourselves? If you have been burgled or subjected to other crime, vandalism, graffiti, car theft etc, simply email brief, but complete, details to the Flagstaff and we will publish them in our next available issue in order to alert others to problems in our community.
Seizure causes Lake Road accident
A local resident, who experienced a seizure while driving on Lake Rd towards Takapuna, crashed into a line of small trees opposite Takapuna Grammar School last Sunday morning. The white Toyota ute spun 180 degrees during the crash and stopped on the northbound kerb. The middle-aged man’s seizure was the result of a pre-existing condition, said Police Constable Glen Irvine at the scene. There were no other passengers in the car and damage was caused only to the trees, a small electricity box and the truck, Irvine said. The driver was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Victoria Road accident A parking sign, a live-cable electricity cable box and the fence of 117 Victoria Rd were damaged in another vehicle accident last weekend. Police attended the incident and no one is believed to have been injured .

Devonport is the lowest crime area on the North Shore, which has the lowest crime stats in New Zealand. Let’s keep it that way. Rob Drent, Editor • Two recent crime incidents reported to the Flagstaff: • “I wonder if any other readers have recently had jackets stolen from their porches? We had our children’s rain jackets hung up in the porch and twice now have had them stolen within a month. “Is there a jacket thief targeting Devonport? Can’t wait to see our jackets pop up on TradeMe. Thankfully we got some fingerprints from the thief and have passed them on to the police. It must be a special brand of low-life who steals children’s raincoats? Dear Jerk, my children walk to school and now have no rain jackets. If you’re reading this I’d like them back…they belong to little children who have been taught not to take things that are not theirs – obviously an ethic you did not learn from your parents.” From ‘Angry mum’ • Chris Hirst, who lives on the corner of Cowper Street and Patuone Ave, found his car trailer missing on the morning of Friday 15 August. The metal Pinto trailer has a timber deck. Hirst says he had chained its wheel and axle with a large chain but that it had been cut through. The local plumber says he has also had copper hot water cylinders and copper pipes stolen from his property in the past. Please contact the Flagstaff with any information on the missing trailer.

Mushrooms get makeover
ROY DYKES DIRECTOR
Rutherford Rede on the Shore “Putting your financial affairs in order”
Mushroom harvest… the Mt Victoria mushrooms are set to return in Spring after a clean-up The much-loved mushrooms on Mt Victoria have disappeared, but there’s no reason for concern – they are being spruced up and will return in September. Watercare have taken the mushrooms – which are actually air vents on top of the Mt Victoria reservoir – away for a facelift. The cast iron domes will be kept but their supporting grilles will be replaced and new stainless steel pipes will be inserted at the top
of the existing vents. The “caps” will be repainted using the same red and white pattern, while the “stems” will be painted light cream. The mushrooms were removed mid-August. • In November, Mt Vic’s mushrooms will be the backdrop for the Devonport Arts Festival’s Magical Toadstool Glade. Toadstool craft kits will be for sale at the garden day at Mt Cambria reserve on October 12.

Second storey planning infringements not notified Non-complying plans to add a second storey to a bungalow in Cheltenham, just off the waterfront at Torpedo Bay, have been granted resource consent without public notification. Neighbours two doors down found out only after the consent was already granted and the whole process has been questioned by Devonport Heritage. The renovation plans for 1 Cambridge Tce propose to lift the heritage bungalow and build a second storey underneath. These infringe seven rules of the North Shore District Plan, including maximum height, heightto-boundary controls, maximum building coverage and building length control. The height-to-boundary infringements are 3.1m over 13.8m on the southern side and 3.6 m over 19.3m to the north. Infringement on the maximum height is nearly one metre. Duty Commissioner Cherie Lane approved the application without public notification on the grounds that adverse effects on the environment are minor and that immediate neighbours had signed off on the plans. “All persons considered to be adversely affected have provided written approval,” she says in a report. But John Lethaby and Michèle Vanzon live two houses down and are about to lose their sea view. They found out about the plans for the bungalow from a friend. “We were totally caught off guard. Uncertainty still hangs over heritage protection for Devonport
A leading heritage architect has criticised the government for not going far enough to protect historic suburbs like Devonport. Bruce Petry, director of Salmond Reed architects, one of the leading heritage firms in New Zealand, said government moves to establish a landmarks list of historic buildings and sights was fine as far as it went. But it was the “common manure of buildings that are under threat” especially commerical properties in suburbs like Devonport, he said at a public meeting at St Paul’s church to update residents on earthquake-prone buildings and heritage legislation. Petrie said there was a danger that the Victoria Theatre would remain and “there would be nothing else left in Devonport,” which would
make a mockery of its overall heritage fabric. While MPs Chris Finlayson and Maurice Williamson failed to ease Petrie’s concerns, Finlayson said the architect raised an “excellent question” and a subject for future discussion. Finlayson said the Heritage Act New Zealand had came into force last May, whereby the government took over the role of the Historic Places Trust, although local committees remained. Historic Places Trust protections are still in place, but the government was establishing a landmark list of buildings and places – “an A-list…New Zealand’s Gettysburghs and Mt Rushmores.” Heritage New Zealand has until November 2015 to develop policies on how to administer the list, Finlayson said.
Concerned for suburbs like Devonport… Bruce Petry Earlier in the meeting North Shore MP Maggie Barry had said the potential for Devonport becoming a heritage precint had been discussed, after a tour around Devonport by ministers.
Heritage buildings not threatened by earthquake legislation says Government Earthquake-prone building legislation posed no threat to heritage buildings, the government assured Devonport residents at a public meeting last week. Devonport Heritage spokesperson Margot McRae said there was conceern that the only way commercial property owners could pay to upgrade their buildings was to add on one or two storeys, which would destroy their heritage value. However Maurice Williamson, who as then Building and Construction Minister led the government’s work on earthquake-prone building legislation, said the laws were designed to make existing buildings safer. There was nothing in the legislation that allowed by law for the sort of redevelopment suggested by McRae, he said. However applications to repair earthquakeprone buildings were handled by local authorities, so to a large degree were outside government control. An earthquake-prone building programme
had been put in place in 2004, but the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, which killed 185 people, had brought a greater focus. Around the country 15,000 to 25,000 nonresidential buildings were earthquake-prone. Massive improvements needed to be made to council databases to identify exactly which buildings they were and their saftey status, Willaimson said. Residents and potential purchasers of buildings should be able to know easily about the safety status of buildings. How much work was needed on earthquakeprone buildings sometimes depended on whether they were in high earthquake-risk areas or not. Legislation was currently before Parliament. Williamson said a significant proportion of risk of injury can be caused by parapets, verandahs and the like, which in some cases were not complicated to replace. Architect Bruce Petry said Salmond Reed was advising clients with earthquake-prone buildings to reach 67% of new building standards (NBS).
Victoria Theatre Trust co-chair Mark Sigglekow said the theatre reached about 16 % of NBS and about $1.8 million would have to be spent on earthquake strengthening.

Second Bayswater marina survey challenged
Bayswater Marina Holdings Ltd has commissioned a second survey with Colmar Brunton, after its first survey, conducted this July, was called biased, inaccurate and misleading by local resident Jodi Letica. Now Letica has lodged a further complaint with Research Association New Zealand (RANZ) about the second survey. Letica questions conducting a second round of research among the same target market, and on the same topic, after the Flagstaff published the first survey being under review. In fact, the second survey seems to be a result of Letica’s original complaint. Colmar Brunton spokesperson Brian Turner acknowledged that his firm was refining the first survey and was From page 1

at the skatepark, which makes it unusable after heavy rain. Its remote location has at times led to antisocial behaviour. “A new location will allow for a stable foundation. Also, by placing the skatepark next to the children’s playground, car park and amenities building, better passive surveillance will be provided,” the 2012 Ngataringa Park Draft Development Plan said. However a council spokesman said on Monday: “The material placed on top of the landfill is not providing an adequate barrier to surface water infiltration. In some places this layer is not considered sufficiently thick and in others has contaminants present in the soil that are not suitable for some uses such as gardening or playgrounds.”

Wastage occurs when council fails to gauge local opinion Clearly if the decision-makers at the council are interested in our opinions, an article in the local newspaper outlining a proposal and providing a website would provide an opportunity for us to express our opinions to the decision makers before they spend our money. The replacement library is a good example of wastage of our money. I suggest most (all?) households in Devonport have access to the internet. We live in the days of iPads, Kindles and computers allowing us to download books. Providing access to all the libraries in the Auckland region,
In a recent issue of the Devonport Flagstaff, the chairperson of Devonport Heritage wrote about the proposed spending of some $500,000 on a bus shelter at the ferry building. Importantly she gave a website that readers could access to send their opinions on the proposal. I and others - judging by recent correspondence printed in the Devonport Flagstaff – have been concerned at the wastage of our rates on projects that residents neither need nor want. I did access the website and proffered my thoughts on the proposed bus shelter and received a reply that it would be considered.
coupled with the opportunity to download a library book or order a book to be delivered to the Devonport library, is the only tangible benefit that I have received from the amalgamation of the councils. It is little wonder that such wastage occurs when we are now informed the council has 900 planners and 600 policy analysts. In summary, decision-makers – including MPs and council members – before spending our money, should provide a website to allow those affected an opportunity for us to comment. How else can they gauge local opinion? Ian Brown
Sharing the road with courtesy and patience
Buy a selected pair of elastic sided boots and receive a unique Australian Saltwater Crocodile Belt
I was recently riding through the traffic islands between Tui Street and Cambridge Terrace with my eight-year-old son. As the road here is too narrow to safely allow vehicles to pass I followed the advice of the road code and “took the lane”. This annoyed the driver of a black VW Golf GTi following me so much that when we emerged onto Cambridge Terrace he wound down his window and shouted at me to “get off the road you idiot”. May I remind people that we have to share the road, no matter what our choice of transport. A little courtesy and patience makes life a lot more pleasant for everyone. Also, when someone riding a bike “takes the lane” on a narrow section of road or at an intersection, they are not being an idiot - they’re following the law. Chris Werry

War Memorial a reminder of the importance of peace
Thank you Devonport Peace Group for reminding me that it is not enough just to attend a yearly Anzac service to remember those who died and fought in wars past then trail off to our comfortable homes and cafes. While we may enjoy ‘freedom’ today, millions affected by ongoing horrific and ghastly wars do not. As Oxford University war history professor, Sir Hew Strachan said in the Herald this week, we should not be spending millions just on the remembrance of WW1 but looking at the global reach of war and how governments today make decisions about conflict. Israel’s war against
Crime has wider implications for Devonport residents I guess it’s all relative, but complaints by the NZ Police Association about police funding from government not being increased since 2011 are beginning to sound very relevant. Although crime in the Devonport area is thankfully at its usual pretty low rate, local residents are being hit by criminals in other parts of the North Shore. A well known local contractor has had his fully enclosed yard in Glenfield burgled twice this year, with the loss of four vehicles, yes four, and many thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment. None of it has surfaced anywhere, according to police investigators. Can it be that police are unable to give such crime adequate priority because of lack of funds? No one has been brought to book for these burglaries, so far... Crime against businesses such as this have consequences beyond the initial impact: staff worry if the business will manage to survive, insurance premiums rise, stolen vehicles and other items must be replaced, and perhaps the business will be forced to relocate to a more expensive, completely locked-up building. So imagine the same contractor’s surprise when, some hours after the All Blacks v Wallabies test on Saturday 16th August, he and some friends relaxing by the fire, were visited by two uniformed constables in a marked police vehicle. No, they weren’t there about the burglaries, but were asking about some pieces of fruit allegedly being tossed over the fence during rugby-oriented festivities in the backyard! Is it fair on victims of serious crime to learn that funding shortfalls might be hampering full-blown investigations of real crimes...? And how loudly do we have to complain about inadequate police funding to politicians facing an election less than a month away...? Max Dennison
Gaza, for example, is armed through billions of dollars from America. I think those fallen WW1 soldiers would be horrified at the ongoing slaughter of innocent people. The peace group, by their presence, have reminded me to think of my own contribution to a culture of peace; a peace built on social, economic and environmental justice. Cathy Fraser

Riding the wave from Devon to Devonport
Making waves in the film industry… Karl Lear looking forward to directing another movie sometime soon
Once working behind the scenes on Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and the UK TV series Grand Designs, Karl Lear sits in the director’s seat these days. His 2012 documentary Waverider has won awards at film festivals in New Zealand and, recently, Hawaii. He spoke to Maire Vieth.
pher, editor, writer, producer and director. This wide experience was invaluable in his documentary Waverider, where he juggled holding the camera, directing and editing. The documentary won Best Feature Film at the 2013 Aotearoa Surf Film Festival and Best Ocean Feature Film at the 2014 Hawaii Ocean Film Festival. Waverider follows the story of Fijian surfer Isei Tokovou, a local wildcard entry into an international surfing competition. Tokovou works as a boat driver on Tavarua, Karl Lear has been something of a mul- a small island west of Fiji. He takes surfers titasker in the film industry for the past 20 out to Cloudbreak, a legendary barrel wave years, working as an actor, cinematogra- a mile offshore. He has surfed the wave since he was a child but owns only hand-me down boards and has no trainer, manager or support team, unlike the other surfers in the competition. Nevertheless, he competes with the best surfers in the world, including American Kelly Slater and Australian Joel Parkinson. Lear shot the film in seven days. “We were a really small crew of three, most of the time sitting in a boat, following Isei around, or interviewing other surfers about him,” he says. Completed two years ago, the hour-long film now has a life of its own, Lear says. It is still touring the world, having collected ten www.scapetech.co.nz official selection laurels at film festivals in scapetech@clear.net.nz New York, San Diego, Honolulu, Hamburg, Anglet (France), Bali, Florida, North Caro-
lina, Portugal and Spain. It is the second best-selling sports film in Canada and has been bought by Brazilian, French and US TV networks, he says. The 41-year-old Englishman is a big fan of New Zealanders’ reserve and modesty. After four years in the country, Lear is more comfortable speaking about those who helped or influenced him than about himself. “We got some great footage in Fiji thanks to underwater guys who volunteered to shoot for us and the Fijian Surfing Association that got us access to top surfers like Kelly Slater,” Lear says. Of working on Grand Designs, he says: “Don’t say I shot Grand Designs, because there were lots of camera guys. I worked on Grand Designs, mostly because I was from Devon and they decided to shoot a series on West Country houses.” While about Gladiator he says: “I was the second assistant AD on the UK unit, not in Africa. I had to corral the extras, get them into make-up then into the get-covered-inmud department. There were 2,000 of them there on the first day and by the second day 1,000 of them didn’t come back.” However he did meet Russell Crowe on set, who was “very in character.” Lear grew up in and around the city of Exeter, where his passion for film was born. “My friend Les was mad about film and we
The Devonport Flagstaff Page 17
September 5 2014 always talked about movies,” he says. He watched movies mostly at his grandparents’ house. “My granddad used to have a Super 8 camera and projector and got old films and played them on a pull-down screen,” he says. Lear’s biggest TV influence was naturalist David Attenborough. “Documentaries about the world is all I ever watched on telly. I have always had itchy feet and I enjoy living somewhere other than where generations of my family have grown up,” he says. Travelling was how Lear figured out what he wanted to do with his life. After school, he had initially studied architecture and surveying at Bristol University, but dropped out after a year. “My uncle was a respected architect, so I thought it was a cool thing. I had worked for him as a kid, carrying bricks around and that kind of stuff. “And I guess I tried to get a job that my dad would have thought was proper,” he says. Lear’s father had started out in the Navy then moved to a career in sales, first selling door-to-door for Nestle and finishing up as national sales director for Pilot Pens. But after travelling across Europe for a year, Lear went to study film at the University of Surrey. “I was more mature, had real focus and knew what I wanted to do. I had found myself or whatever you want to call it,” he says. While in Surrey, he also met future wife Sharon Baker. Looking back Lear says his grandfather Horace Dupré had the biggest influence on him. After older brother Darren died of meningitis when Lear was only two, his parents went through a difficult time and Lear was looked after by his grandparents in Pocombe Bridge, a rural village just outside Exeter. Dupré came from an artistic family. He was a professional woodcarver and the cousin of the late British cellist Jacqueline du Pré. “He taught me a lot, not just about art, but about things like tending the garden. He was very hands-on with everything,” says Lear. Dupré carved church furnishings for J. Wipple & Co, including one for a Canadian cathedral for which he received a personal phone call and invitation from a Canadian bishop to thank him. “He also was an amazing painter and sculptor but a very modest man - incredibly talented yet very quiet about it,” he says. After graduating from film school, Lear rounded up a crew to direct his first proper film, Better Days. “I had met some amazing guys in film, a camera guy, a couple of really good editors and someone with a great eye for lighting. A friend wrote the screenplay and we rented a house in Devon for six months to shoot. We financed it by working in restaurants on the side,” he says. Better Days screened at the 1997 Edinburgh International Film Festival. A scout for 20th Century Fox saw the films and offered Lear and his team first refusal for
their next film. Instead, Lear went into advertising. “I basically had no money and the film helped me get a job in advertising in London, which set me up to start my own production company in 2000,” he says. Pangaea TV Production started out as a one-man outfit. Over the years, Lear produced award-winning ad campaigns, set up a competitive animation and visual effects unit, and worked on numerous documentaries. He also directed the Channel 5 feature documentary Meet America. “We were travelling from the East Coast, from New York through Florida, Mississippi, Texas, California and then back across the top. Twenty-one States in five weeks. It was a crew of three – me, a presenter and a sound guy in a car – and it was an amazing experience,” he says. By 2010 the company had ten staff when Lear sold it and moved to New Zealand. Two years earlier he, wife Sharon and their then three-year-old son Oscar had visited on holiday. “We just loved the country’s emptiness and beauty and the safety and freedom it offered kids,” he says. Breaking into the New Zealand film world hasn’t been straightforward, says Lear. In 2010, he set up Red Yeti Films with fellow Brit Andrew Lawson. Red Yeti was the production house for Waverider and also produces commercials and music videos. Musicians Bic Runga, LA Mitchell, Cairo Knife Fight, Beth Orton and Mark Vanilau
have had videos shot by Red Yeti. A recent Cairo Knife Fight clip is clocking 1,000 views every hour internationally. A TV ad for TAB called “You Beauty” (inspired by Kevin Spacey’s performance in American Beauty) won Ad of the Week at Stoppress, a local advertising news service. A year ago, Lear also joined Brand Developers Ltd (BDL) in Takapuna as asenior editor. He and Sharon, who works as a business analyst, have bought a house a stone’s throw from North Shore Cricket Club. “Oscar is cricket mad, so it’s perfect,” he says. Lear says he spends most of his spare time with son Oscar (now 9) and daughter Summer (7). Always having been quite sporty (swimming, rugby, cricket, ice hockey, soccer, tennis), he played in North Shore United’s Over 35s until last year. “Now I just coach Oscar’s football and cricket teams. After that, there isn’t much spare time life. I haven’t been at the movies in way too long,” he says. But somehow, Lear has also managed to write a short film, that he submitted to the Premiere Shorts programme of the New Zealand Film Commission, which funds one short film a year, aiming to launch New Zealand talent on the international stage. “My film got shortlisted and in the end somebody beat me to it, but coming second out of about 500 was a great feeling. Now, my dream is to get going on another feature film,” he says.

and our youth. He’s not just here for the money you know... rowing facilities and public transport for the masses, these are his contributions to our community. He has Auckland Transport and Fullers on his team too. Even Maori were silent on this one, which speaks volumes of interrelated deals and another underhanded deal, also in Ngataringa bay, done in complete silence. I hope a legal challenge is put against the government and LINZ and the perpetrators that gave Herbert, wrongly so in law, so-called legal title to our harbour bed. The title should be revoked and Chris Powell you should put your head in the sand at Bayswater and let us know when you feel Herbert is moving the earth for the betterment of our community. I don’t have the cash or the time to mount a court application to stop Herbert and our corrupted government officials that have created this situation. If I won Lotto I would file in court immediately and I reckon the open files of the participants, the secret conversations, emails etc, the coffee table talk – it would be like a weeping sore. The revelations would make the book Dirty Politics look like a kids’ story. Such an open book would also show how to win council contracts, to make millions on ratepayers at double retail rates for your work done, whether it be pavements or crossings or street signs. The Devonport Flagstaff Page 23 Back to the Future, the 10th Anniversary of the Takapuna Grammar School Fashion Show, raised more than $12,000 for the Starship Foundation. The evening, held at the Bruce Mason Centre, showcased much of the creative fashion work produced by students from Years 9 to 13 over the last year. It all happened under the auspices of Deborah Woodward, the school’s Head of Soft Technology, who was creative director of the show for the seventh year . But it was the students who were the real stars, from models to designers and perfomers on the night. Year 13 soft-tech students Lucy Eaglesome and Ella Sheehy, were responsible for much of the show’s production, coordinating models, fashion providers, fundraising, make-up and entertainment. Other highlights of the evening were the solo jazz performance of singer and bassist Phoebe Johnson, the a cappella Aquarius Girls and the dance students Cyberpunk Dancers. A time capsule suspended in mid-air and two borrowed Daleks provided the perfect backdrop for futuristic and vintage fashion travels. Glamour and creativity on show from TGS... designs are being investigated,” an AT report to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board says. “Detailed designs will only commence on budget allocation. The current LongTerm-Plan anticipates this in 2021-22, but consideration is being given to bringing this forward to the 2015-16 and 2016-17 years,” the report said. Bayswater Community Committee chair Gay Richards said a new ferry terminal can’t come soon enough. A recent storm destroyed
a temporary landing berth. “Now we have an improvised one, which is our new term for being less than temporary,” she said. Richards said the terminal refurbishment needed to be given “priority status” as the facility served 12,000 people a year. Local Board member Grant Gillon said it was time for the board to “put a stake in the ground” and address the poor ferry terminal service provided at Bayswater.
Hauraki residents go to town on petitions A petition war has erupted over Hauraki Corner traffic issues. A petition signed by 39 Napier Ave residents in August asked Auckland Coucil to trial closing off Napier Ave from Lake Road. It follows a July petition from 150 residents of Napier Ave and Harley Rd asking for the trial to be canned. Bryan Dustin, who lives at 6 Napier Road, presented the latest petition to the DevonportTakapuna Local Board on August 19. Dustin said the signatures he collected were of residents most affected by the rat running along Napier Ave, between Lake Rd and Eldon St. “The traffic on our block is physically blocking residents from getting out,” he said. OPEN OPEN OPEN HOME HOME HOME Those who had signed the first petition op-
posing the trial were from less affected areas of Harley Road and the far end of Napier Ave, Dustin said. He said new road markings on Harley Rd had led to a traffic increase in Napier Ave. Auckland Transport spokesperson Mark Hannan told the Flagstaff in July that the proposed trial was off the table. But Devonport-Takapuna Local Board advisor Chris Dee told the latest board meeting that the “solution-seeking process is not yet concluded.” Local Board member Jan O’Connor supported Dustin at the meeting. She said she had counted rat runners on two separate mornings. “I counted 200 of them andOPEN they wereHOME mostly young ladies,” she said.

Santa Parade afloat for 2014 with $5,000 grant Santa Claus is coming to town again in 2014. Devonport’s annual Santa Parade, which has struggled to secure funding for the past few years, has been given close to $5,000 by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board for this year’s event. The parade is scheduled for Sunday December 7. The popular event, which includes the Christmas Festival, is run by the Devonport Lions Club and attracts around 1,000 locals every year. Devonport Lions President Bruce Wetherall said after last year’s funding issues - money came in late from council, which threatened the viability of the event – it was a relief to have the grant secured. “We got exactly what we asked for and we can start promoting the event early among the schools and give them time to prepare a little something special for their float,” he said.
Farewelling Devonport with a celebrity souvenir Paea Finau is leaving her job at Devonport Wharf with a special memory. Having cleaned the wharf for the last four years, she has got to know many locals during that time, including international superstar Ella YelichO’Connor, AKA (Lorde). “I took two photos of her with me this July. She is a very nice girl, very friendly, was happy to do it and my children can’t believe it,” she says. Finau had one of the photos framed, which now hangs in her Milford sitting room. “I will miss the place and the people,” says Finau. Auckland Transport have changed contracts for its cleaning and security services. New providers started work on Monday. Fond memories of Devonport... Paea Finau moving on

Chamber music in Harmony MAIN GALLERY Flag It! 6 – 18 September Opening Saturday 6 September 2 – 3.30pm Panel Discussion 2.30pm
After two performances in Holy Trinity Church with 50 or more band members, the Devonport Chamber Orchestra (DCO) shrinks to just five players and a smaller venue – Harmony Hall – for its next community concert. Three regular DCO players – Sonya Aboltins (violin), Robyn Strange (viola) and Dora Green (cello) – join forces with Aboltins’ sister Deirdre Nielsen (violin) as the Malvern Quartet to perform Reverie Orientale, a lovely piece by the Russian composer Alexander Glazunov.
An up-and-coming young clarinetist, Kenny Keppel, will augment the group for a performance of one of the last works written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – his hauntingly beautiful clarinet quintet. Keppel will also play an interesting piece for solo clarinet called Wireless, written in 1987 by well-known Auckland composer, conductor and clarinetist, Peter Scholes. The concert takes place on September 7 at 2pm. Admission is $10 at the door, with children under 12 free.
New toilets at Claystore A $20,000 toilet block refurbishment at the Claystore building at 27 Lake Rd has been funded by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board. Claystore volunteer Tom Murray said the refurbishment involved new wall-hung pans, a new roof and a general interior tidyup. Auckland Council Properties Limited is still in the process of deciding the future of 27 Lake Road, after it proposed the sale

Chinaman’s Hill now open – more works to come The new path snaking down Chinaman’s Hill was cheaper to build than fixing the old one, says Mark Hannan, spokesperson for Auckland Transport (AT). Rebuilding the retaining wall alongside the old path would have cost at least $140,000, while the new path and its associated works was $11,000 less, at $129,000, according to expert calculations, he says. AT and the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board now want to improve the pedestrian flow around the bottom end of the path. Investigations into changing the current layout on Fleet St have begun, Hannan says. The aim is to allow

a footpath to line up to the Clarence Street footpath and improve safety for pedestrians moving betwwen Bartley Terrace and Victoria Rd. The proposed works are: • A kerb extension onto Fleet St. • Realignment and reconstruction of the footpath through the Fleet Street carpark to tie in with the Clarence Street footpath. • Provision of angled parking spaces. • Stormwater improvements as part of the kerb extension works. • A street lighting upgrade and landscaping. Hannan says there are no changes proposed to the New World car park as part of this project.

Primary school students campaign for safer crossing Primary school road patrollers fear for their own safety just as much as that of those they help cross the road. A flurry of near misses during the school morning crossings on Victoria Rd has prompted eleven-year-old Devonport Primary School (DPS) student Erin Cutts to write an open letter to the community. “Devonport drivers, please slow down. Stop for us! Look after us kids!” she pleads. On the morning of August 4, Erin saw her friend and fellow road patroller Olivia Peyton nearly get hit by a car. Olivia told the Flagstaff: “A lady in a blue car came driving on my side and I think she was just looking into her handbag or something, but she was going pretty fast and had to come to a screeching halt. The Stop sign nearly hit my face.” DPS Acting Principal Bruce Tilby says drivers are also impatient and regularly hoot at the kids to hurry up. “It has made road patrolling a bit of a dangerous job,” he says. Erin says the drivers don’t seem to understand why road patrollers have to wait before they can let kids across. “It’s because some of them have driven through while the sign is out. Now we have to wait until the cars have completely stopped,” she says. Other DPS road patrollers echo Erin’s and
Safety first… (from left) Willa O’Neill, Kim and Shea Bratton, Erin Cutts, Olivia Peyton, Jessica Scott and Bruce Tilby Olivia’s experiences. Shea Bratton (Year 6) says he has had a couple of close calls. “One time a car had almost stopped and then got going again and drove around the sign while I was holding it out,” he says. Jessica Scott (Year 6) says she was lifted out of danger in the nick of time by a school parent. “A lady just didn’t stop. It gave me a real fright,” she says Nearby residents and police are also con-
cerned. Constable Julie Brown, who assisted with road patrol two weeks ago, says she has filed a request with council asking them to make this crossing safer. Neighbour Willa O’Neill has been helping on road patrol for two years. “People are driving faster now and they are not as prepared to stop. When I have navy under the bright yellow vest, they think I am a cop and it makes a bit of a difference,” she says.
New roundabout considered for Victoria Rd Mike Cohen generally supports the idea of a roundabout. “It could work quite effectively and is probably better than what we currently have or than putting a set of traffic lights there,” he says. There has been dissatisfaction with the tricky intersection for years, says Cohen. After the then North Shore City Council received complaints in 1995, the zebra crossing was moved further up Victoria Rd to
A roundabout is being investigated for the intersection of Victoria and Calliope Roads, says Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson Mark Hannan. As part of the investigation, AT is looking at using some of the residential land surrounding the intersection should current street space be insufficient for a roundabout, Hannan says. improve safety. More recently, the intersection has been in the news, with reports of drivers ignoring the Calliope Rd Stop sign and the nearby Victoria Rd zebra and school crossing. The road rule for those coming up the hill and turning left into Calliope Rd has also become confusing for traffic heading into the village since the change in give-way rules in March 2012.

House chant The annual house chant was held on August 14th, under very threatening skies. House leaders had spent time and effort writing the chants, followed by a series of house assemblies to teach and enthuse the students. Each chant is judged on its originality, delivery and enthusiasm of the students. The best houses to demonstrate this were Tainui and Aotea. Tainui just piped Aotea, continuing their series of wins, while Arawa settled for third and Tokomaru finished in fourth place. By BriDGet Connolly

The Under-19 Girls team brought home the biggest win, coming first in the Women’s Under-19 1A grade. The team is made up

The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Gold Award Courtenay Giles, Year 13, was awarded her Gold Award – after years of hard work, countless hours of giving, tramping and learning new skills – at the youth awards ceremony for Queen’s Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Gold Awards, conducted at Government House in Wellington. His Excellency Lt Gen, The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mataparae, Governor-General of New Zealand, awarded 58 young people the Queen’s Scout and Duke of Edinburgh awards. Courtenay made comment that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award was “one of the most worthwhile programmes” she had ever been involved with. She was able to see some of the most beautiful places in New Zealand, while at the same time making lifelong friends and memories that she will never forget. The Gold Award is the culmination of the Duke of Edinburgh journey, however it is by no means the end. The experiences learnt
from the award process will springboard Courtenay into the next phase of her life. Congratulations Courtenay on a fantastic achievement.

Two young scientists with a vision
Young Ideas, a group of students from all around Auckland, are set to change the world. The initiative was organised by TGS student Wendy Jian and Botany Downs student Aryaman Taore, the two youngest finalists in the 2013 Eureka science competition. The vision is “to combine the skills that students have, to create solutions to problems in the world as a whole, using innovative S.T.E.M (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) ideas,” says Wendy. Around 120 Students from all around Auckland registered to be a part of this initiative, and this was narrowed down
to 24. The students were split into four groups, representing countries in the Pacific - Vanuatu, Fiji, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. Within these groups the students are working towards a solution to the same problem – water scarcity in Pacific countries. Students of all different areas and skills are involved in this project, from economic and business skills, to political, innovative and science-based skills. Young Ideas had their first Young Innovation Forum on July 14th at Auckland University and the group plans to meet four to five times a year. It’s at these forums that groups can get guidance and advice from Auckland
University lecturers and professionals. The guest speaker at the first forum was Labour MP, Jacinda Arden. Registrations to be part of Young Ideas are still open for any interested students. The forums provide a place for the groups to develop innovative solutions for water scarcity. Once ideas have been developed, the most commonly agreed on will be put into action. For more information on this, and for any local business eager to sponsor or support Young Ideas, visit the website, http://young1ideas.wix.com/yinv By hannah patterSon

Plenty to celebrate at Bayswater School Bayswater School has won the School Award at Auckland Council’s Schools’ Trash to Fashion Awards for the first time. The $2,500 prize it received for the win will be used to further reduce waste. Six Year 5 and 6 students also won top placings with individual garment creations, including Dos Esqueletos by Julie Bongartz and Sofia Harrison, The Rolling Stone by Lucia Kwok and Sydelle Langis and Zaraphant by Zara Booker. Bayswater School principal Lindsay Child said it was exciting times at the school. Child had also learned that five students had made it into the regional finals of Jump Jam and are off to Tauranga in November. “It’s the first time we entered and I didn’t even know we had that talent,” she says. The school is also in the planning phase of building four new classrooms due to roll growth. This is in addition to two further satellite classrooms for the Wilson School. Similar satellites exist at other schools like Windy Ridge School, Manukau Primary, Albany Junior High School and Glenfield College. “The buildings will be ours and they will be occupied by Wilson School children and teachers,” says Child. Construction will begin on the new classrooms in 2015.
Lots happening at Bayswater school… Jasper Shanahan (Year 5) dressed up as Grandma McGarvey for last Friday’s book parade and grandparents’ day at Bayswater School. Jasper’s auntie, Nicola Ferguson, visited as his “honorary grandparent.”

Grandmother brightens students’ smiles in Colgate comp
There is a secret weapon behind Belmont Primary’s win in The Great Colgate Carton Challenge, which netted the school a prize of $5,000. Pupil Crishan Hensel’s grandmother, Benita Ameratunga collected 1,005 Colgate toothpaste boxes, more than a quarter of the school’s entry of 4,015. Ameratunga was keeping mum about how she does it, but is more than happy to help the school out. Crishan hopes the money will go towards Miniball shirts.
