As Washington DC expands its Metro further out into Virginia, Reston has seen an influx of professional workers and young urbanites looking for access to urban amenities and convenience. As the form changed through the DD process, it was critical that the construction documents were updated to reflect the current terrace conditions. I was in charge of updating the model and creating design options to explore and test different facade configurations.

As Reston Station is being constructed, overhead protection is required to allow Metro access from the silver line parking lot. Due to the amount of time it would take for the construction to reach substantial completion, the client was interested in creating a more engaging entrance into Reston that would evoke the future LED screen. With the guidance of Lisa Goldsmith (cred.) we designed multiple scaffolding configurations with varying materials and amenities to create an activated yet temporary space. These views were created via Revit design options + Lumion.

Our client envisioned developing a large swath of Reston Station into a newly dense environment that would declare itself a destination as opposed to a stop on the Silver Line. In order to transform this suburban environment into a culturally rich urban one, we needed to show Fairfax County that the new density would offer an exciting and transformative pedestrian experience. My team developed Sketch-Up models to show activation and density at the pedestrian level. For zoning approval and massing studies, I made a 1:60 scale 3D printed model of the development and context.

metrohealth DESIGN DIAGNOSTIC
As the hospital prepares to implement a new master plan, they requested a design diagnostic to be done on the newest pavilion to gauge whether the user experience synced with the pavilion as designed. This was an exhaustive shadowing and documentation study done in person over the course of 4 days to explore how the users of MetroHealth Critical Care Pavilion functioned in the space and whether any considerations or lessons learned could be applied to future campus designs, credit; Rebecca Soja, Kate Renner, and Sheila Ruder - HKS Inc

ROOM OCCUPANCY
The totals above, derived from behavioral mapping data, demonstrate which rooms staff frequent the most. Through shadowing nurses and recording space utilization behavior maps, the research team was able to understand which areas of the flexible plan are utilized more than other, whether that be certain Support Cores, or particular spaces within each unit. Both studies revealed that the Physician Workrooms and the workstation are the most occupied spaces. The behavior maps showed that many spaces are underutilized that could potentially unburden Team Workstations and Physician’s Workrooms.

The CCP has multiple variations on the medication room layout that require staff to learn multiple efficient routes, potentially resulting in delayed patient care and medication errors. The counter space and configuration of Med Room C is the most preferred by the staff and pharmacy, while Med Room A is the least preferred due to its lack of counter space and open layout, which is perceived as less secure and prone to distractions. The rooms were designed for 3 Pyxis but are currently holding 4.

M I D AT L A N T I C D E S I G N FELLOWSHIP
For the past decade, HKS DC has hosted a competitive design competition that pairs professionals with design students. Over the span of a weekend, 3-4 teams tackle a design prompt and furiously charrette innovative and imaginative design solutions to present to a panel of guest critics. Every year our MADF team assembles and writes a new design prompt, exploring local issues including equity, access, and urban design. The process starts with a call for applications, and students from architecture and design programs from all over the country submit materials in the hopes of participating. They are then paired in teams with HKS professionals to begin exploring the prompt and working through a rigorous 3 day design charrette. This process involves intermediate crits by the MADF team and guest lectures by invited professionals from relevant fields. The entire process culminates in a day long design presentation and critique by guest critics in front of the HKS DC office. credit; Kaitlyn Badlato, Rebecca Soja, and Zachary Wolke - HKS Inc

To support the new pavilion and connect it to the existing hospital, our team selectively chose key interventions along the existing complex to transform and open to establish continuity between old and new. This process was careful and extremely dependent on close coordination with the new pavilion team and the users. Since the building would remain operational, we had to be rigorous about our process in designing complicated phased-construction that would leave the areas affected operational and provide much needed new program. credit Yasaman Bagheri, Emily Dickinson - HKS Inc.

UPMC Altoona
UPMC Altoona PURSUIT This pursuit was a fast-paced process in which we proposed a new mini-tower as an addition to an existing hospital. I was in charge of coordinating 3 large renderings over the course of one week and creating many diagrams to illustrate how our proposal would simplify their existing complex circulation paths. Also - we won!

CAMP RED J
CAMP RED J
-049
In order to preserve the 180 degree views of the lakefront property and provide a home for permanent fixtures such as the cooler and grill, this porch was designed as an outdoor Adirondack mudroom. A covered walkway was added that connected the side of the house to the main deck, a screened in section provided relief from black fly season and a protected location for the seasonal loading/unloading of the camp. The resulting circulation was much more direct and provided a more convenient path to the lakefront.
