Architecture, It does not have a fixed definition. It is about Building // Human and more than that. A great design can bring a change to the people and the community. Architecture is a combination of art, science and humanity that engage people with both physical and mental aspects with complexity. It is something spiritual and meaningful that attracts my willingness to spend time exploring.

The excitement to design something that could improve the current living condition of people and community has always been the motivation. It is exciting to study the human behaviour, local culture and the needs in different context, by complying their cultural preference and habit to provide a custom resolution.

Master of Architecture Design Thesis IBA Melbourne Permanence // Impermanence

Hypothesis An architecture that acknowledge the culture of demolition, d i s a p p e a ra n c e , t ra n s i t i o n , replacement and cultural reinvention. Embracing the nature of impermanence in architecture, the culture and spirit of place is intangible and permanence. This thesis will go against the traditional perception of permanent housing. Exploring how semi-permanent housing can contribute to the market of affordable housing for medium to low income citizens. At the same time addressing the issues of urban renewal and urban sprawl. It adopts the concept of Limited Equity Cooperative; the individual does not need a mortgage for their unit. With this hypothesis, not only are houses become affordable, the technology will be constantly updated. Unsustainable architecture can be easily replaced, improving the efficiency of cities and quality of life of the residents.

Thesis Statement A self-organizing and collective modular housing system where individuals can use modules to adapt to different lifestyles and activities. A new kind of architectural project, which responds to the changing household patterns and lifestyles in the 21st Century. Architecture that accommodate constant cycles of change while conserving the best of the past, satisfying the needs of the present and designing a future. A laneway is proposed to connect the Brunswick activity centre horizontally as oppose to the vertical Sydney Rd commercials. The site and the laneway became the exhibition of IBA Melbourne which houses impermanent modular housing and retails. Achieving permanence through impermanence. The Importance of the local is being reactivated by the proposed laneway, adopting the impermanence elements and the usage of space in the newly proposed laneway, returning the city and urban life to a human scale. As for the site, the project is proposed to separate the building system into two parts, the infrastructure and the housing. The infrastructure includes the building services and vertical circulations while the housing consisted of many small living cells that could change, adapt, disappear and appear on their own. It results in a flexible building that allows for diverse housing units and allows in adapting innovation of latest building technology. Creating an intelligent environment which has the capacity to learn and an ability to respond.

Monastery Case Study - Montecassino Italy Every member of the monastery community has an important job and duty. There are many different jobs that a monk may undertake, for example receiving pilgrims and visitors, book binding, event organization, maintaining the libraries and archives, and agricultural activities such as growing plants and herbs for the pharmacy. With work and prayer, the monks learn humility, obedience, collaboration, charity, and avoid idleness. The working day is divided into three roughly equal portions: five to six hours of liturgical and other prayer; five hours of manual work, whether domestic work, craft work, garden work, or field work; and four hours reading of the Scriptures and spiritual writings. This balance of prayer, work, and study is another of Benedict’s legacies. St. Benedict also displayed a spirit of moderation. His monks are allowed clothes suited to the climate, sufficient food with no specified fasting apart from the times observed by the Roman church), and sufficient sleep (7–8 hours).

Aiming to reconnect the long-isolated river back to the city. A digital art centre that exhibits itself from the outside form to the inside space, maximizing the transparency to encourage visual permeability and enable interaction with the pedestrian. Given the density of Melbourne’s building and in response to the expanding population, open spaces, public plaza in Melbourne plays an important role in balancing the hectic work life of the citizens. As oppose to the city’s solid built fabric, the building will provide a hint of what’s happening inside the gallery. The purpose of all art is to communicate through a new form of expression, the building does not only provide spaces for digital and contemporary art exhibition, it also connects the city back the river. Multiple strips of linear geometries directing visitors to different views from both side of the world. It allows movement through the site, continuously activating the streetscapes. The building maximises the opportunity offered from the site. By using a simple palette of material, it creates an impression of quality and timelessness, emphasizing the fluidity of the building through the movement of lights and shadow. Leaving the structure and the program to interact with the public.

Flinders Street Perspective

An urban porosity featuring permeable accessible plaza and maximized public space. Introducing public space throughout the entire building in between programs and on all levels. A place that would allow people to spend their time outdoors and offer the chance to get closer to the nature. It is a building that blurs the rigid line between city and nature, urban and architecture, inside and outside. A place that blends city, environment, human beings and spaces all together.

The site is proposed to turn into apartments for family living. The courtyard design is envisioned to enhance social interaction around the neighborhood while providing identical family dwellings at the same time.

Shared Balcony

Utilizing the advantage of being in the middle of two parks, the idea started by lifting up two corners of the courtyard, forming two magnificent entrances that provide connectivity between inside and outside, making this architecture open to everybody. People will engage it as if it was the center of the site. The form of the building is designed to create animation that brings a sense of live to the neighborhood. The facilities and residential all merged together following the animation that brings energy to the site that engage with diverse range of people.
