STANFORD CENTER ON LONGEVITY

Key Points

1. LOGO

Represent the wearable on the elderly side.

Represent the analytics data on the app side.

This logo represents health tracking and community connection between elderly and their caregivers.

Home Page ProďŹ le

Analytics Chart: Provide visual analytics data to the user so that he/she can monitor fall down history.

Minor Fall: The elderly can get up by themselves. Major and minor falls are separated based on the severity of injuries Major Fall: Major fall is an emergency fall. They cannot get up by themselves and need medical assistance immediately.

Fall down Log: Present details about each fall, including fall down data, time, fall down severity types and warnings.

Warning

Warning: When the elderly falls more than twice a month, a warning message would show on top of the homepage, prompting the user to check the elderly’s health status. Prioritizing the warning on top with using high contrast color to attract users’ attention.

Warning Pop-up: This pop-up provides details of the warning and prompts two ways to connect with the elderly. Send a voice message to the wearable or call the elderly’s phone. The system shows the user how to act on the data.

Voice Message

Record Button: The user needs to hold the button to record his/ her voice. We adopts the way of how sending voice messages work in commonly used social media apps.

Play: Allow the user to re-listen to the voice message he has recorded.

Send: Allow user to conďŹ rm sending the voice message. Back: Provide the option for the user to re-do his message.

Warning Log

When the user check the detail of the warning, it will go to the log. From here, the user should choose either send a voice message or make a phone call.

If the user hasn't taken action in response to the warning, he/she can still do it in the log.

If the user has already taken action to the warning, the log will record and the action that he/she has taken .

Alert

Alert: When a major fall happens, an alert pops out on the phone.

Device Status: If a major fall is detected by the device, it will call 911 automatically. At that point, status of 911 call shows on top of the homepage. In emergency, getting help from 911 is more important than talking to the user. By doing so, the app allows the user to know the elderly is connecting to medical assistance help and relieve their anxiety.

Walkie Talkie

Walkie Talkie Button: After 911 call ends, the user can directly talk with the elderly through the app and the wearable. Putting the button on top of the screen encourages the user to talk with the elderly.

Walkie Talkie: When a major fall happens, the app can work as a walkie talkie to get the user connected with the elderly. In that situation, the most important thing for the user is to be in touch with the elderly. We keep this page simple so that other information would not distract the user’s attention and cause anxiety.

Minor Fall Notification

Notification: When a minor fall happens, though it is not as urgent as a major fall, the app would send a regular notification to the user and let them know what happens instead of alerting.

Wearable Device

Button: We want our design to be simple enough to make it useful and usable for the elderly. The surface of the screen served as a button, and is designed to be slightly beneath the edge to prevent accidental button press. When the wearable vibrates, its interface glows in blue light. The elderly can press the interface to listen to the voice message sent by the app. When a fall down is detected, the screen will glow in red light. The elderly can also press the tangible interface to call 911 directly if needed.

Wearable Device

Speaker & Microphone: The elderly can listen to voice messages sent by the app directly through the wearable itself. When a major fall happens, the device can connect to the app directly, allowing the elderly to be connected to his/her caregivers.

Wearable Device

Watch: The tangible interface also functions as a watch, encouraging the elderly to wear it daily. The wearable will remind the elderly to wear it via beeping sound alert.

Waterproof: Material of the wrist band is waterproof, allowing them to wear it during bath time.

Wearable Device - notiďŹ cation

Blue Light Glowing: When the app sends a voice message to the wearable, the wearable would start to glow in blue. The elderly can press the tangible interface to listen to the message.

Red Light Glowing: When a minor fall is detected by the wearable, the wearable would start to glow in red. If the elderly is actually in an emergency fall down situation, he/she can press the button to call 911.

6.1 Wearable-Warning Hey David, you has fallen down too frequently. You should probably go to see a doctor.

When the app receives the warning, synchronically, the wearable would receive a warning automatically as well. Wearable would vibrate, and the screen starts glowing in blue light when there is a new warning.

When the elderly pushes the button (the tangible interface itself), he would hear the system warning in a voice message form.

6.2 Wearable-VoiceMessage Dad, you have fallen down several times. I am worried about your health. Do you want me to take you to the doctor?

When voice message has been sent to wearable, wearable will start vibrating and the screen will glow in blue light blue. Same as getting a system warning.

When the elderly pushes the button, he would hear the voice message.

6.3 Wearable-FallDetected

911

If the elderly pushes the button, it would call 911 directly.

If the elderly gets up by himself, the wearable will stop glowing by itself. When a minor fall is detected by the wearable, the wearable will be glowing in red.
