Susan had been married for 8 years. She met her husband, Simon, when she was at school and fell for him immediately. She got pregnant 2 months after

they left school. Simon persuaded her to give up her idea of becoming a teacher and stay at home to look after their baby instead. One day a friend of Susan’s told her that she had seen Simon in a bar kissing another woman, and that he often chatted up other women behind her back. She advised Susan to dump him. Susan didn’t believe this but asked Simon anyway. He admitted that he had been having an affair for the last 2 years and couldn’t decide whether to finish the marriage or finish the affair. Susan was so upset that she screamed at him to leave. She felt she was losing everything that was precious to her. She started thinking to herself – was it her fault? Had she let herself go? Had she not been paying him enough attention? She poured herself a large glass of whisky. She couldn’t believe that the man she’d given everything up for would cheat on her. Thirty minutes later the phone rang – her mother was seriously ill in hospital and wanted to see her. So she got into her car and started to drive to the hospital. Suddenly a boy ran out in front of her and although she tried to stop she was too late. The boy died from his injuries.

Tony started shoplifting when he was about 13. His father was an alcoholic who beat him regularly, so Tony didn’t spend much time at home and instead

hung out with his mates on street corners, drinking cheap alcohol and trying to start fights. It was easy for his friends to persuade him to steal little things like chocolate and CD’s, small luxuries to make his life easier. His friends introduced him to a girl they knew. They hit it off straightaway and they soon started going out. He couldn’t believe such a cool, pretty girl would fancy him as he’d never had luck with girls. However as time went by they started falling out more often because he didn’t have the money to take her out a lot. When he was 16 his friends started stealing bigger things which they could sell, and Tony became jealous that his friends seemed so rich now. His relationship with his girlfriend had got worse and he heard that she was starting to spend time with other guys. That was really out of the blue for him. One day he was outside with his friends as usual and there was a car parked nearby. Inside they could see an expensive new car stereo. ‘Go on. Take it,’ his friends said. ‘You could get £200 for that if you sold it.’ But as Tony broke the car window and reached in to take the stereo, the car’s owner came back. He saw Tony and started to chase him. Tony tried to escape and ran out into the road without looking. A passing car hit him and he was killed immediately.
