Program Notes The World God Only Knows (2013) is meant to be a careful, serene, and introspective piece. The title implies a sense of loneliness, a landscape empty of all life except for one. However, there is a certain peace to be found in an all-encompassing loneliness. The English horn journeys through familiar melodies, never straying far from the intended musical material, while the piano subtly guides the way. The piano itself never goes above the range of the English horn in order to stress the sense of serenity that only an English horn's beautiful timbre can provide. While the piece is largely tonal, the harmonic direction is unconventional and unpredictable, giving the pacing a sense of mystery.

Performance Notes - In every instance in which the piano and English horn are playing together, the piano is always in the role of accompaniment and should never overtake the English horn in volume. For example, if both instruments are marked forte, the piano should play at the next lowest dynamic (mezzo-forte). To clarify, the written dynamics are meant to be contextual. - For the English horn: For any phrases that end with an eighth-note cutoff, the note should be stopped on that beat, rather than lasting through the eight-note. This is to clarify that the note should not be stopped before the beat.
