digital | film MAGAZINE

Hello readers and contributors to digital | film MAGAZINE! First I would like to give a HUGE thank you to all of you amazing photographers who have contributed to the magazine. The idea of creating a photo magazine came to me around Fall of 2009. Not until December of 2009 that I told my good friend Nathan Miller [http://www.flickr.com/photos/na-th-an_photography/] (an amazing photographer from Australia) about my idea. What I wanted to create with this magazine, was a platform for amateur photographers, like myself, to get their work published. In the new digital era that we live in today, most of us have digital cameras which record and hold our photos in a card. Then most of us upload our photos onto a computer, and some post their work on the internet, many use the very popular Flickr website. But usually it stops there. Most photographs that people take are never printed, only viewed through a screen. However, many have already taken the time to go and print their photos, and if you’ve ever printed your work you will know what I mean when I say, “Theres something about ink on paper that looks SO good!” This is how I got the name digital |film for this magazine. It’s the crossing of the traditional film technology where you print your work, and digital technology of high resolution photographs. Seeing your work published and printed is one of the most amazing feelings and I want to share that feeling with everyone. digital | film MAGAZINE will feature a selected amount of photographers. You will see a short bio (if provided), a list of Q&A, and of course a vast selection of their own favorite photographs. Again, I would like to thank you all for the AMAZING response we have received and we hope to make this magazine even better every time! And especially thanks to Nathan for helping me spread the word about the magazine and all the help he has given me! Thank you so much! Peace&Love, Francisco Cuevas [http://www.flickr.com/photos/francisco_cuevas/] If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, PLEASE email us at dfmagazine@gmail.com Issue 1

Q&A Q: How long have you been taking photographs?

A: I had a basic point and shoot since last christmas but it wasn't until March that I got my DSLR, and then in August I got my film camera - so a little over a year. Q: When you take a photograph, do you think about what the photo will be of, or what the photo is trying to "say"? Meaning, do your photographs make the viewer think deeper, than simply what the photo is "of?"

A: I always have a concept in my head, but the composition tends to be how I show the meaning. I think body language is really important. Emotions can be in more than just faces. I really hope that my photographs make a deeper impression and are thought provoking to viewers. Q: Do you have inspiration behind your work, where does it come from?

A: Most of my inspiration comes from films and magazines, but my environment also helps. Sometimes it's nice to just take pictures of what I see. Q: Do you have a favorite photographer?

A: Not particularly, but I have a few favorite directors; Joe Wright, Jean-Pierre Juenet and the Coen Brothers. Q: Have you experimented with film? If you have, which do you prefer and why?

A: Yes, all the shots here are film actually. I love film, the quality is just so much different. After I found my film camera I just fell in love with it. It feels so much more personal than digital. Q: Do you plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, or professionally?

A: I plan to keep taking pictures until I no longer enjoy it, I'm not really sure what I want to do professionally. Q: Why do you like photography?

A: Like most people, it just lets me express myself - I love being able to show rather than tell.

Q&A Q: How long have you been taking photographs?

A: Though I’ve always carried a cheap point-and-shoot with me to take pictures of flowers, I really started broadening my photography horizons when I got my flickr in April of 2009. Q: When you take a photograph, do you think about what the photo will be of, or what the photo is trying to "say"? Meaning, do your photographs make the viewer think deeper, than simply what the photo is "of?"

A: That depends. If I’m shooting digital, I try to shoot with a specific idea, or at least a specific mood. Then later, I can enhance the idea on photoshop by altering the colors, etc. However, I usually don’t edit my film pictures, so when I shoot film, I try to just capture an aesthetic image. It’s funny, actually, how different my mind-set and style are when shooting film and digital. Q: Do you have inspiration behind your work, where does it come from?

A: Yes, I try to soak in everything. I am a huge book nerd, so my head is full of books and quotes that undoubtedly seep into my work in one way or another. I find music really inspirational as well, especially when trying to portray a certain emotion. Many films and music videos take my breath away and give me ideas for tones and concepts. Lastly, I am inspired by nature. Most of my shots are taken outdoors, and locations really help me to envision a shoot and help my ideas come to life. Q: Do you have a favorite photographer?

A: I have two that I have always loved, though I’m always finding interesting photographers. I fell in love with Horst Diekgerdes’s work the moment I saw it, and I hope to one day be able to take images like his. Anoush Abrar & Aimée Hovin are also huge inspirations. They work as a duo, but I suppose that that means that I lied when I said that I only have two favorites, haha. Their work is more emotional and innovative than Diekgerdes’s work, and they have mastered fashion photography and fine art photography. I actually named my cameras “Horst” and “Anoush” in hopes that I will channel these two photographers.

Q: Have you experimented with film? If you have, which do you prefer and why?

A: Yes, and though I love film, digital photography is by far my favorite. Editing an image is half of the fun of photography for me, and the high quality of digital makes editing a lot more enjoyable. Q: Do you plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, or professionally?

A: Yes, actually. Photography will be my major next year in college, and I hope to one day be a fashion photographer for French Vogue. I’m sure that there are hundreds of other teenaged girls with the same dream, and I’m sure that many of them are better than me, but I will follow my dreams, regardless of the slim chances ahead of me. Q: Why do you like photography?

A: Photography is therapeutic. If I’m angry, or sad, or stressed, I’ll shoot pictures. Even if they are seemingly concept-less images of scenery, trying to find the best lighting and the best angle and the ideal settings for my camera help me to escape the drama of life and enter a world where my only concern is getting the best image possible and pushing my personal limits. It’s a magical experience.

Q&A Q: How long have you been taking photographs?

A: Not long at all, I probably started taking pictures about a year ago when I got my first camera, and I didn't take serious photos until last summer. Q: When you take a photograph, do you think about what the photo will be of, or what the photo is trying to "say"? Meaning, do your photographs make the viewer think deeper, than simply what the photo is "of?"

A: I think that a lot of the time it depends. Usually when it's nature or pretty scenery I just like what the picture is "of" and it doesn't necessarily say anything, just shows beauty. I feel much more emotion in portraits and photos of certain objects. I think that I concentrate more on what the picture "says" when I take them. Q: Do you have inspiration behind your work, where does it come from?

A: I carry a composition book everywhere I go to write down what inspires me because almost everything does. Whether it's something someone says or just an object, I find inspiration in so many things. I also get inspiration from three of my friends who are interested in photography and everyone on Flickr. Q: Do you have a favorite photographer?

A: I can't say that I do. There are so many different styles that it continues to amaze me how unique everyone is. I love looking at a variety of work . Q: Have you experimented with film? If you have, which do you prefer and why?

A: I haven't yet! My grandmother gave me her old Pentax film camera so I'm going to buy film and experiment with that soon. Q: Do you plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, or professionally?

A: I plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, but I have still have a while to decide. Maybe I'll change my mind between now and then! Q: Why do you like photography?

A: Before I started taking pictures I wasn't creative in the least. I like photography because it challenges me to do something that I'm not naturally good at. It's helped me become much more creative. There's just something about looking through a view finder that really does it for me :) Issue 1

Q&A Q: How long have you been taking photographs?

A: I've been seriously taking photos for a little less than a year. Q: When you take a photograph, do you think about what the photo will be of, or what the photo is trying to "say"? Meaning, do your photographs make the viewer think deeper, than simply what the photo is "of?"

A: Well, I don't think much when I'm taking photos, to be honest and if I do, I can't remember. I get in a zone where its me and the camera, that's it. I hope my photographs make people think though, and that people can get something out of looking at them. Q: Do you have inspiration behind your work, where does it come from?

A: I'm inspired by basically everything, but mostly music and my emotions. Weather and movies inspire me a lot too though. Q: Do you have a favorite photographer?

A: I think Tim Walker is awesome, but I don't know very many photographers so, I'm not sure. Q: Have you experimented with film? If you have, which do you prefer and why?

A: I haven't used film yet, but I really want to learn how to develop my own photos. Q: Do you plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, or professionally?

A: I definitely want to pursue it as a profession. I have two more years of high school then I want to go the Art Institute in Seattle. Q: Why do you like photography?

A: This is a hard one. Basically, its done a lot to improve my life. Sometimes, I feel like its my calling or something, you know?

Q&A Q: How long have you been taking photographs?

A: Since I was about nine I used to take photos of like flowers and animals with a little disposable camera. Q: When you take a photograph, do you think about what the photo will be of, or what the photo is trying to "say"? Meaning, do your photographs make the viewer think deeper, than simply what the photo is "of?"

A: I hope so. I usually always shoot people so I try to make my photos have some kind of emotion or a certain feel, different viewers feel differently when they see my pictures. Q: Do you have inspiration behind your work, where does it come from?

A: Well other Photographs of course. But I find inspiration in the smallest things, The sky, the weather, models, people, locations, cobwebs... Q: Do you have a favorite photographer?

A:There are heaps that I look up too. But I more so have favourite photographs. Q: Have you experimented with film? If you have, which do you prefer and why?

A: Yeah when I was younger all I shot on was film, then in high school I learnt how to use a darkroom and develop my own film. Just last year I spent half a year only shooting film and developing my own photos for a course I was doing. It's a lot of hard work and gets very frustrating, but the final image is so much more rewarding than digital. But I'm pretty lazy so I prefer digital. Q: Do you plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, or professionally?

A: What ever happens I hope to always be doing it. I am about to move to a city where there are a lot of opportunities for professional careers in photography, so I will see what happens :) Q: Why do you like photography?

A: Because I suck at other art forms and photography allows me to be creative and since I was little I've always been interested in photography.

Kelly Rosen ht tp : // w w w. f l ick r. c o m / p h o t o s / ke l lyelizabeth/ Bio: My name is Kelly Rosen. I am a fifteen year old, self taught photographer, and I have been in love with the art for a little less than a year now. I really got into photography after the deaths of my dog and only grandmother (which were a month apart) and I've been in love with the art ever since. I spent most of my life on the east coast in northern New Jersey and now reside in Kentucky. I'm pretty short due to severe scoliosis. I'm really just like every other girl you will meet and there really isn't anything special about me. Aside from photography I enjoy drawing, music, reading, dancing, learning about names, and the obvious hanging out with my friends. And to answer the most overused question on the face of this earth; my favorite color is green.

Q&A Q: How long have you been taking photographs? A: Well, I started to dabble in photography about 2 years ago but it was a very small hobby. Once my dog was killed, my grandmother passed away, and my parents let me use their camera I became much more serious about it and it grew from there. So I have been serious about photography for almost a year now and that is how long I have been taking actual photographs, at least in my mind. Q: When you take a photograph, do you think about what the photo will be of, or what the photo is trying to "say"? Meaning, do your photographs make the viewer think deeper, than simply what the photo is "of?" A: It depends really. I try to put a meaning behind every one of my photos but I'm not always successful. It all depends on what kind of mood I am in. There are days where there is something on my mind and I want to say that through a photograph or I want to portray a concept or issue then there are my happy go lucky days where I just want to take pictures of pretty flowers and sunsets. My photography can get kind of random and inconsistent because of this but I wouldn't have it any other way. Q: Do you have inspiration behind your work, where does it come from? A: Yes, my inspiration comes from life and everything in it. It varies day to day between personal experiences, other photographers, friends, family, music, world issues, other forms of art, etc. I draw from it all. Q: Do you have a favorite photographer? A: On flickr I definitely have some favorites but outside of that I don't have any at the moment. I've been trying to research well known photographers to develop some favorites but so far I haven't had much luck. Lately, I've been trying to view photography outside of flickr because I know I can't always depend on it.

Q: Have you experimented with film? If you have, which do you prefer and why? A: I have experimented with it, not much though. I really love the general look and feel of film and were money not an issue I would definitely use it more often. I'm kind of split 50/50 between digital and film. I can't really speak about it technically because I don't know much about the debate. I prefer digital right now because it is less expensive and more instantaneous. Hopefully I will be able to invest more time and money into film when I am older. I love digital as much as I love film so I really can't choose between the two. Q: Do you plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, or professionally? A: Professionally. I hope to become a natural light portrait photographer specializing in child and newborn photography. I spent my life lingering in between ridiculous careers that I tried to convince myself I had a passion for. Now that I have a grasp on photography, I'm never letting it go. Q: Why do you like photography? A: Photography is my way to remember and my way to forget. I love the feel of the shutter button under my finger and the thrill of capturing a quick moment. It is so rewarding to preserve what may be gone tomorrow, in a month, or 10 years from now and know that I provided someone else with a memory of it. When I am behind a camera I lose hold of all reality and former worries. I have no concept of anything around me other than what is being displayed through the viewfinder. It's like getting lost in an book or a beautiful song. I exit my world and feed my senses with what they crave most; the sight of a vision transforming into a work of art and the sound of a shutter capturing it. After the deaths of my grandmother and dog I never thought I would regain some of the joy the brought me. Photography has brought back some of that joy and it's all because of them..

Matt Wa r r e n ht tp : // w w w. f l ick r. c o m / p h o t o s / m wim ages/ Bio: Matt is not what you would call 'artistic' by nature. He was born in to a family of painters and sketchers, but struggled with a brush and barely made a stick man look good. When he was tiny he had no time for art, instead he focused on the arts, studying acting and theatre from the age of 6. A lot of years passed and he found himself working in a small office, in love with a beautiful girl and painfully under accomplished. It was then, in July of 2009 that he stumbled upon Flickr and it's vibrant community of talented, friendly people from across the world. He wanted in! That day he bought his first ever real camera, a Sony A350 DSLR and started teaching himself how to use it. Photoshop was a tool that quickly followed and he's always searching for new ways to show his dramatic, sometimes insane personality with it. He's still searching for his style and very much still learning, but he's loving every step of it and eternally grateful for the friendship and support he has found.

Q&A Q: How long have you been taking photographs?

A:The first picture I remember taking was on a school trip to a Naval Centre, I guess I was around 5 and I had a terrible disposable camera to work with. I spent a lot of time with Point and Shoot camera's on holidays and always thought I had a flare for it, but it wasn't until July '09 that I first took a picture as art. I called it 'Night Terrors'. Q: When you take a photograph, do you think about what the photo will be of, or what the photo is trying to "say"? Meaning, do your photographs make the viewer think deeper, than simply what the photo is "of?"

A:Usually. It's a difficult balance because when you try too hard that's when it all falls down. I certainly don't take pictures just for the sake of it and often try to sneak a subliminal message or two in there. Q: Do you have inspiration behind your work, where does it come from?

A:I have a lot of inspiration, from the world around me, the people I love and the incredibly talented guys on Flickr. I'd name some names, but they know who they are! =) Mostly though, I'm just a little bit mental, so I have that odd voice in my head that tells me to lick frozen lamp posts, slap bald peoples shiny heads and jump in to strangers photo's to thank. Q: Do you have a favorite photographer?

A:Actually, yes! I didn't think I did at first, as it's specific images I enjoy rather than specific photographers. That said though, Ben Wong has a style and talent that astound me every day. You can find some of his work at www.vonwong.com. And really that's a close tie with the simply stunning Cat, Flickr's My Imaginary World, who can capture the overwhelming beauty of true, raw emotion in a way I've never seen replicated. Q: Have you experimented with film? If you have, which do you prefer and why?

A: Erm...I've made some crazy movies? I honestly don't like film. I never did! It was the idea of taking a picture, then waiting ages and paying loads of money before you even knew if it was any good. The digital age really has revolutionized the world of photography...

Q: Do you plan on pursuing photography as a hobby, or professionally?

A: It is my deepest desire...ok Clare's going to read this, so its my second deepest desire after spending my life with her, to become a professional conceptual portrait photographer. I'd love to use the skills I've learnt to meet new and interesting people and show their strangest, most subtle characters in a single image. Q: Why do you like photography?

A:Because it has no limits. You can take your imagination to the absolute peaks and show the world what you're thinking. If Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder, then I invite you to look through my eyes.
