foreword event possible. First, thank you to the members of the Book Festival committee, especially our 10 volunteers who participated in the Jewish Book Council conference. We listened to presentations of 250 authors and narrowed the field to this year’s lineup. Our audience will be the final judges, but I think we assembled a well-rounded line up of authors presenting the best in literature, Jewish history, Israeli and national current events, and personal health. The Festival would not be complete without our Closing Night revolving around the best Jewish food. A special thank you to Amy Rahmani and her staff, Andrea Wolfe, Jasmine Mueller, and Barb Lindenberg. In just her second year as the Director of Arts and Culture, Amy executes superbly and keeps this huge event running efficiently.
Co-Chair Debbie Kaplan with Chair John Dreyfus
I
t is an honor to chair the 47th Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Festival, or as our savvy social media enthusiasts refer to it, the #JHoubookfest. For the past 47 years, the Book Festival has brought the best minds, artists, historians, and leaders of the Jewish community. Previous festivals have included such notables as Saul Bellow, Elie Wiesel, Carl Sagan, Amos Oz, Faye Kellerman, Betty Friedan, Bella Abzug, Red Auerbach, and Jason Alexander…Who will emerge as historically significant from the 2019 class of presenters? My objectives were to provide excellence in our presentations and programs and to broaden our audience. We are attempting to expand the audience with more social media engagement and an expanded radio and TV presence. My personal request is that all of you introduce someone new to the Book Festival. This year’s Fest will showcase talented authors with strong Houston connections. Adam Chandler (Drive Thru Dreams) is an acclaimed journalist and former member of AZA. Josh Frank’s (Giraffes on Horseback Salad) mother used to work at the J. David Dow is a professor at the University of Houston Law Center. And Jake Sherman’s (The Hill to Die On) wife hales from Houston. I want to thank all those who helped make this outstanding
Thank you to our Book Festival Leadership Team: Lori Farris, Emily Feinstein, Diane Lee Kraitman, Mardi Kunik, Joe Pryzant, and Jordan Magaziner Steinfeld. I am especially thankful to our newer committee members: Lauren Sancton made great contributions with our marketing and social media presence and Jordan Magaziner Steinfeld was instrumental in creating our brochure. I also want to thank our Book Store Volunteer Managers and program volunteers. Special thanks to Stefani Twyford and Lori Farris who have made the “Community Read” the event of the year for all serious readers. I am so privileged to have Debbie Kaplan as my Co-Chair. After finishing her term as President of the J, Debbie understands the full dynamics of the agency. She looks to engage all those in the community. She is driven, passionate and is no doubt Isaac Mizrahi’s biggest fan. None of this would be possible without the support of our Patrons of the Arts, the Eleanor and Frank Freed Foundation and all of our sponsors and community partners. Thank you for your support! Finally, 47 years ago, I witnessed my first Marx Brothers movie, Horsefeathers. I was hooked. In the last three years, the J has shown three Marx Brothers films. Horsefeathers is my favorite. I can’t wait to be with all my friends and family as Groucho serenades Thelma Todd in a canoe and when Chico and Harpo perform the Speakeasy scene. What is the password? See you at the #JHouBookFest.

28TH HORVITZ SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE SERIES
75 Since ’45: Liberation and the Postwar Era with Dr. Hanna Yablonka of Ben-Gurion University February 9–23, 2020
The war was over on May 8, 1945, but what lies between V-E Day and Liberation? Where does the Holocaust really end, and how and why did it become an epoch changing event? We will ask and answer questions of historical, ethical, judicial and social nature, weaving in memory, commemoration and narratives. A major focus will be on the survivors of the Holocaust and their inspiring decisions, actions and lessons in the 75 years since liberation.

DocuJews: King Bibi
Thursday, December 19, 2019 1:00 PM & 7:30 PM
Directed by Dan Shadur | Israel | 2018 | 87 minutes
PROJECT Trio
This film explores Israel Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu’s rise to power, relying solely on archival footage of his media performances over the years: from his days as a popular guest expert on American TV, through his public confession of adultery and his mastery of the art of social media. From one studio to another, “King Bibi” evolved from Israel’s great political hope to a controversial figure whom some perceive as Israel’s savior, and others as a cynical politician who will stop at nothing to retain his power.

Annual Fund
This is Joan's Story... "I was introduced to the J by a friend just over three years ago after my husband passed away. The J has saved my life. I am all alone and through the J I have made friends who care about each other and spend time together. The five of us come to the J three times a week for exercise, lunch and bingo or other activities. Together we sit and talk – reminiscing about the past and enjoying each other’s company. I couldn’t live in Houston without the J – it is my home away from home."
Tell us your J story at erjcchouston.org/MyJStory The J Annual Fund is the fundraising effort that supports every member of our community.
