DFW Network Marketing News

Editor’s Desk Like millions of other American I am in-tuned with the economic difficulties that we are facing in this tough economy. In the past seven years America has experienced a “huge” drop in our economy. This huge has also affected the financial lives of countless middle-class Americans who never dreamed they would experience being part of the lower economic class, and millions of other lower economic classes who never though it could get even worse for them. Yet it has become a reality, more Americans are living in PROVERTY. The reason for this downturn in America’s economy has been blamed on various people, politicians, and corporations. But for the millions of Americans affected by this “bad economy” it doesn’t matter who and why it happened. What matters is how and when it can be fixed, and unfortunately this is a question no one can answer. In my opinion the question millions of Americans should be asking themselves is, how and when can I fix my own economy? I believe that in order for millions of Americans to bounce back or become part of middle income America they must take their financial destiny into their own hands and calling their own shots rather than depending or relying on politicians and corporations. Even if jobs are created how long will it take for a certain number of individuals to get back in the workforce? And who will get the jobs, certainly not everyone that is unemployed. So, in the meantime do you wait it out by taking a lesser paying job while waiting and hoping that you will find a higher paying job, and if you do get a higher paying job will it be enough to help you recover? And how long will the recovery period take? For millions of Americans particularly those 40 years of age and older, they don’t have the luxury of time on their side. This group of Americans will not be the first in line to receive jobs, and if they are, how long will they have to work to position themselves for a comfortable retirement? In my opinion if someone 40 and older is looking for a long-term career, they are not being realistic about their financial future, nor are they taking the proper steps to secure their financial future. Because the average person 40 years or older starting over and relying on an employer’s retirement plan doesn’t and will not make economic sense. What does make economic sense? I’ll let you know in September’s issue.

large amount of products. Therefore they replied to what was happening by planning a sales compensation structure which encouraged the sales staff to turn satisfied clients (frequently family members and friends) into sales delegates. The corporation rewarded them for the sales created by their entire group of sales representatives. And the multilevel marketing history was made! In 1956, Dr. Forrest Shaklee joined in the multi-level marketing concept to offer a broader distribution of the solid food supplements he had developed. And then in 1959, previous NutraLite sales representatives Rich DeVoss and Jay Van Andel initiated the Amway Company as the American Way of advertising products. It was a great until the concept got in to some bad hands that started to missuse it. Believe it or not, one of the first examples of this came in the form of chain letters. The letters promised substantial profit if you would send a cent or a buck to the person at

about the industry, you will have a change of heart after reading a few issues of the DFW Network Marketing News! Just like a lot of other misunderstood concepts, multi-level marketing has met opposition in the past because of a popular bewilderment of what it’s all about. The multilevel marketing history is fairly straight forward but matters got confused in the general public’s mind when illegal pyramid and Ponzi scams were produced close to the same time. In truth, multi-level marketing, also known as internet marketing or MLM, is simply another sales model that first came out in the 1940’s. A company called California Vitamins realized that all of its new sales representatives were mates and family of the existing sales drive, the cause being that they needed the product at wholesale cost. The management also identified that it was far simpler to create a sales force of a lot of people who each sold a few of the products than it was to find a few people that could sell a

the bottom and many did just that. Although these letters actually started and were thankfully shut down before multi-level selling was born, they later bred similar schemes which we know as pyramid or Ponzi schemes. These prohibited activities require giving members commissions for hiring other members. Nonetheless, no product or services is offered as it is by legal MLMs. In 1974, Senator Walter Mondale declared pyramid and Ponzi scams to be the state’s number one buyer fraud. And that is when it became rough for multilevel marketing. In the mid 1970’s, because they’d no real clear appreciation of what internet promotion was all about, the federal Trade Commission started to point all network marketing firms. In 1975, the FTC filed a case against Amway, on the reason the company was an illegal pyramid and that its refusal to sell its productions in retail stores made a restraint of trade. Four years and millions of greenbacks later, Amway cleared their name. In 1979 the FTC eventually ruled that Amway was not a pyramid, that’s its cash was generated from the sale of its products, and the FTC acknowledged network marketing as a legal distribution system. The MLM industry does have an interesting history and MLM companies are run in a way that is completely different from other business models. The Continued Next Page

DFW Network Marketing News! industry started as far back as the 1800s with traveling salesman. In a time where transport was not available to everyone, these traveling salesmen would go door-to-door and offer goods that could not be purchased at the local store or were better quality. Back in those days there weren’t all that many stores either, especially in rural areas. Did you know that Avon started back in 1886 and today earns $10 billion in revenue annually and has over 6 million representatives worldwide? Alfred Fuller started the Fuller Brush Company in 1906, the company’s reps went door-to-door selling mops, brushes and cleaning products and they are still in business today, nobody has stopped cleaning since then! Born Sarah Breedlove also known as Madame C.J. Walker became the “first” female self-made millionaire in 1913 by employing over 1,300 African-Americans to sell her products door-todoor. In fact, some of her sales agents earned as much as $300 per week! Madame C.J. Walker’s company was the first AfricanAmerican company to sell its products using the network marketing concept. Everyone has heard of Tupperware and after World War II the whole concept of home parties began with their products. A great social concept that brought women together and also earned the hostess commissions for her efforts. The Mary Kay Com-

pany started about 20 years after that but still had the same home party concept. It continues today with Mary Kay and companies such as Pampered Chef whose representatives has successful businesses and can be found doing cooking demonstrations in just about every major city and in their own homes. We can go on and on about all the successful MLM companies that are out there, but the list is too long. But you can rest assured if there was anything fishy about a company that was started 100 years ago it wouldn’t be around today! MLM is the only kind of business model that allows everyday people to earn an income by promoting a product and even more by recruiting other people to do the same. Affiliate marketing is the only business that comes close but that only involves selling one product to one person at a time. We will discuss Affiliate Marketing in the September issue. All the companies above make healthy profits and some are not even regarded as MLM companies any more, they’ve become household names such as Herbalife, Amway, Mannatech, Nu Skin International and Mary Kay along with hundreds of others that are generating income for millions people worldwide. So if you encounter people who are leery of MLM you can educate them

about this successful business model and also mention how much money some of these successful companies make annually. They make that money because they sell millions of high-quality products or services every year through teams of distributors. There’s always an opening for more people who would like to start their own businesses, work hard, have fun, meet many new people and better still - make a great income doing it.
