Homemade Specials at NaKato Prove That

Not All Breakfast Is Created Equal

H

eavy, grey clouds dominated the Saturday morning sky. Crisp November winds reminded us that winter shut down autumn’s reign a little early this year. The warm, welcoming glow from inside Nakato Bar & Grill caused everyone to hustle a little bit faster. Seating a large party of four adults and two children was not a problem. We were immediately greeted with a smiling face and breakfast specials. The kids went straight for the French toast and pancakes. The array of specialty omelets had me intrigued, but I can’t say no to homemade biscuits and sausage gravy. Before I even asked, the waitress assured me that a half-order was plenty. The prices were so affordable that I ordered one egg, over easy and a side of hash browns as well. “Perfect” is the only word to describe the hash browns at NaKato Bar & Grill, located on Belgrade Avenue in lower North Mankato. The golden, crispy layer on the top is just thick enough to hide the soft, buttery bottom layer from sight. They were so beautiful that it was hard to believe they could possibly taste as good as they looked, but in this case, they were even better. The first bite revealed that it was the combination of the two textures, the intermingling of the crispy and the soft potato that made them truly perfect. You couldn’t have one without the other. These delicious hash browns are fabulous all by themselves, but they are also the secret, hidden treasure at the bottom of NaKato’s famous sausage bowl, and in my opinion, are what make this dish so amazing. The sausage bowl is not on the menu, but according to our waitress, is often available as one of the weekend specials. NaKato’s perfect hash browns line the bottom of a large bowl. Then the hash browns are layered with eggs and topped off with homemade

biscuits and sausage gravy. There was more than enough gravy to cover the dense, crumbly biscuits. The gravy was thick and creamy and packed with snappy sausage – flavorful without being too spicy. I did not order the sausage bowl, but I definitely will next time. Luckily, I have friends that don’t mind a stray fork sneaking a bite or two. Otherwise, I might have missed out on this unique version of a scrambler skillet. I’m a firm believer in sharing food. I love tasting what other people are eating and letting them sample from my plate. When something is great, I can’t keep it all to myself. The flavors and textures of everything I tasted compelled me to keeping sampling. Normally, I am not a big fan of sweet breakfast foods. But both the French toast and pancakes were fantastic. The hand-dipped French toast slices were extra thick and the egg wash was grilled to a golden brown creating a firm texture without being too chewy. The pancakes are the size of dinner plates and are a meal all by themselves. Once again, the pancakes were grilled beautifully – a feast for the eyes and the stomach. By the time we finished breakfast it was close to noon, so I justified ordering a Bloody Mary. As soon as it arrived, I knew I had made the right decision. It came with a lime, a pickle, three green olives and a beer chaser. They use a Zing Zang base, but add several of their own ingredients to make this one of the best Bloody Marys around. Jim and Jan Downs, owners of Pagliais Pizza, purchased NaKato over a year ago and they have done a wonderful job creating a familyfriendly bar and grill. NaKato’s location is an easy walk for neighborhood residents , making it a great place to kick off date night or the perfect destination to feed the crew after a family outing.
