I
By Joe Tougas
t’s almost one in the afternoon at Tune Town, the last remaining independently owned record store in Southern Minnesota. Carl Nordmeier, the founder and owner, is at the register. The glass counter in front of him hosts an impressive display of quirky, cool and kitschy. From the Replacements box set to the Beatles commemorative plates to The Who coffee mugs. Five customers are in the store, some perusing CDs in the front room, others in the used LP section — the Vinyl Vault — in the back. A middle-aged woman brings to register three compact discs by the Avett Brothers. She fans them out in front of Nordmeier. “Which of these is the newest?” she asks softly. He looks at them, left to right and back again. He points at the CD titled “Carpenter.” “‘Carpenter’ is the latest one,” he says, then quickly points to “I and Love and You,” the band’s 2009 disc. “But

that’s their most popular album.” “I’ve seen them,” the woman says, a bit unsure. “I really enjoyed them last summer at the State Fair.” “So you don’t have any of their stuff?” Nordmeier asks. She shakes her head, and he points confidently to “I and Love and You.” “I’d get this,” he says. “It’s a great album.” That little exchange demonstrates it all: It’s what Nordmeier considers himself really good at, and it’s what he enjoys doing. Their conversation illustrates, too, the organic top-of-the-head nature of how lots of sales happen at record stores. And the little encounter shows how and why Tune Town has stayed in business not only through the most brutal downturn of the U. S. economy since the Depression, but during a time when the music business itself has undergone an entire transformation not how
it’s formatted, bought and sold. Every small business owner has to deal with a cheaper, bigger and more convenient Goliath. Few make it out alive, and fewer still get to stand in front of a collection of vintage first-pressed vinyl copies of “Some Girls” and “Hot Rats” and talk about surviving not one, but several Goliaths. The story starts promising enough in 1991. Young Carl Nordmeier of Morristown, Minnesota is working at the music department of a large Minneapolis department store chain and does not see eye to eye with his employers on the issue of the highly anticipated Guns ’n’ Roses release. Because it carries an advisory sticker, the store decides to order just one copy as they don’t want to ruffle any feathers. Later, Nordmeier tries to persuade the same employers to stock Nine Inch Nails’ “Pretty Hate Machine.” He is told the store will not stock the disc because it was an independent label. A revelation came via MTV. “One afternoon I saw a commercial on MTV to where you could win your own record store. Just fill out a postcard and mail it to MTV,” he recalls. “I filled out 250 of ‘em. I mailed them to MTV and I made a vow to myself that if I don’t win, I’m going to go back home, live with mom and dad for a year, save my own money and open a record shop.” He returned to Morristown and in October, 1993 opened up a record store called Tune Town in the Faribault West mall. Things went well. “The day I opened, we did $500 the first day,” he recalls. “It grew from a 500 square foot shop to 1500 square feet in less than a year.” Having previously lived and worked in Mankato as a portable DJ, Nordmeier eyed the Minnesota State Mankato campus area as a good spot to expand Tune Town. At the time, Nordmeier recalls, Mankato already hosted Ernie November Records in downtown, Musicland at the Madison East Mall and Disc Jockey in the River Hills Mall. None of those three is around today. But Tune Town arrived in Mankato in 1993 and has remained. It has since moved twice while in town — first in an expansion from the University Square location to what was hoped to be a higher profile spot at the River Hills Mall. And it was a higher profile, but also higher rent. For a while Nordmeier was paying more than $10,000 a month in rent for the two Mankato shops. He closed the campus location and focused on the River Hills Mall spot. Trouble started in in 2008. Best Buy’s arrival and its discounted prices on CDs had taken a chunk of sales away — half, Nordmeier says — and it took a few years to get back. “Right around the time we started getting back into the groove, Napster came around,” Nordmeier said. Napster was the online service by which users “shared” electronic versions of their music in a system that bypassed
commerce and allowed users to pick and choose virtually any music they wanted — for free. “I remember going to a girlfriend’s class reunion,” Nordmeier says. “One of her classmates had a CD book just full of burned CDs and said ‘I didn’t pay for any of this stuff.’ I just thought, Oh, boy….” At first, the shared-music phenomenon didn’t affect Tune Town to any noticeable degree. “People still came and bought music,” he said. “I think our clientele loves music, so they kept on buying music for a long time. But when iTunes came along, people didn’t feel guilty downloading a song and paying for it. That took its toll.” With slow sales and high rent, Nordmeier moved the store to Riverfront and Rock in Mankato’s Old Town in 2010. In a way, it was like starting from scratch — taking something like three years to regain its regular customer base. “We still get people once a week saying ‘I thought you guys closed up shop.” Five years later, the clientele is not only back, it’s expanding. One reason is the resurgence of vinyl alongside CDs. Whether out of nostalgia, sonic preference or a renewed appreciation for album artwork, vinyl LPs are in vogue. Major releases now come out on vinyl again, turntables are in demand and customers at Tune Town have a large selection of both used and new albums to browse. Just as some forces seemed perfectly timed to squeeze his business dry, some trends have helped. In 2008, National Record Store Day began across the country as a day to celebrate stores such as Tune Town by providing them with special products — old, new or obscure releases on fresh vinyl. Record Store Day is now an annual event in several countries and vinyl — new or used — is hot. “A lot of old-school record collectors gripe that they’re not being able to find anything good anymore because it’s so popular,” Nordmeier said. The store has always stocked used vinyl, if only off to the side while CDs were showcased. Now it’s almost 50-50 in terms of visibility in the store, and products that once loitered for years now get pulled off the shelves. “Five years ago, we used to have 20 copies of “Rumors,” Nordmeier says. “I think we’d sell it for $5. Now, it doesn’t come in too often, and when we do and it’s in good condition, we sell it for $20 and it’s gone, just like that. Styx records — we sell them for $10 a pop. Used to sell them for $2 back in the day.” What it adds up to is Nordmeier is able to pay the rent, something he wasn’t so sure he’d be able to do seven or eight years ago. There’s talk of expanding, remodeling and remaining as the gathering place for those souls who want music shopping to be more than a few keystrokes or tap of a smartphone. The business won’t likely see the financial highs of the mid-90s, he said, but there is a market. “There’s people who like to collect physical music. A lot of people see it as an investment.”

Back in the 1960’s, Skyline was the place to go to see the Christmas lights. Also, Grandview Memorial Gardens had a wonderful live nativity scene each year. LuAnn H We went to see Santa at Madsens on the corner of Front andLiberty. And, we has evening Sunday School programs at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Santa was there to hand out goodie bags! Connie C. Growing up on hilltop North Mankato, we always made a drive across the river to check out the Christmas decorations in Skyline. It was exotic, first, because we never drove through that neighborhood. I remember we especially loved looking at the lighted decorations often hung on or over garage doors. They seem so minor today, what with LED light shows choreographed to music and full-yard displays, but a simple glowing Santa’s head or a reindeer with a red nose was the ultimate in Christmas decorations in the 1970s. Mike L Loved to see Sibley Park after a fresh snow. Leslie W The bright beautiful lights on Mary Circle. Jackie H
Growing up in Mankato during the Christmas holidays meant 2 things. Most stores were open longer and Brett’s had their windows decorated much like Dayton & Donaldsons in Minneapolis. People would come downtown and walk the windows on Front St and Jackson St slowly to take everything in that the window dresser, John, had done. Vail B Visited Santa in the basement of Salet’s Department Store. Long lines, long wait. The Toy Department was down there also. Got to spend time browsing the aisles to find that one gift I was going to ask Santa to bring. Pat S. Pub 500 has been hosting a Christmas Eve Party since 2004The first year they performed they invited all their friends from the area on stage to play with them. The show was huge went way past the intended end time. We received a phone call from a lady the day after Christmas informing us that we were at fault for her husband coming home late with a little liquor in his system on Christmas eve. That was the point we knew a tradition was born. We did modify the event to have a 2 p.m. end time as we do not want to disrupt families. Tom F Winter fireworks! Amanda E Going to see Santa in his little house, I think on the corner of Hickory and 2nd! Wayne R
When I was a kid in the 40’s & 50’s riding down Front Street looking at the Christmas decoration’s hanging across the street!! Butch M Christmas decorations strung over Front St & The Salvation Army person ringing their bell in front of Bretts Dept Store! Judy B All the decorations at the Skyline homes. Susan B I loved the Christmas windows at Brett’s & talking to Santa at Salet’s in the 50’s. Deborah P Santa in the Sugarplum house. Ann E I loved the houses with Christmas lights near Tourttlelotte Park. Sharon S The lights, the sliding all over town, the get togethers with family and the Christmas I came home and surprised my mom and dad when I was in the service and my mom played the record “I’ll be home for Christmas.” David G The little church that they used to put on the ledge of the Landkamer’s building when decorating for Christmas. I used to call it the ‘bird church’ when I was little. Kellie D
I miss all of the awesome decorations down snow filled Front street, they were so beautiful. Nothing like them even today. And going out to the Kato Cycle Club for the Children’s Christmas Party. Paula A Trees on top of Hubbard mill and Koppen Gardens. Paul N Santa arriving downtown to turn on the Christmas lights. Especially the year he came by helicopter to the Graif Bldg and came down the fire escape. Susan H I remember in the early ‘70’s, maybe a bit later, that the whole Tourtellotte Park area had Christmas lights. It was SO COOL! Patti L Being young and flying down the hills at Good Counsel on our sleds with my family and cousin’s. It doesn’t get any better than that! Shellii H Clark Oftedahl always played Santa. He was a natural!!! David E I remember going to the airport on Pohl Rd. to see Santa fly in on an airplane. Maybe 1968? Cheryl K
