ometimes you just have to get away. The getaway spot can be anywhere. A quiet lake. A cabin in the woods. A favorite hiking trail. It only matters that you’re away from the pressures of work, the hustle of the city and the noise of daily life. The getaway spot is simply “away.” It is good to know that there are still some places where you can’t plug in a laptop, the internet doesn’t reach and the cell phone signal drops to zero bars. MM

In the United States there are more than 735,000 people living in assisted living settings, with 70% of them that moved from a private home or apartment, according to the National Center for Assisted Living. The change from living on your own with family and friends around you can be quite a change and some residents have a hard time coping with this due to times of loneliness. 40 • LIVING 55 PLUS • AUGUST 2016 • Special Advertising Section

In order to provide their residents with comfort and support, some assisted living facilities have turned to the use of therapy pets. Research has shown how beneďŹ cial pet therapy can be to the elderly, especially those who are living in assisted living. Regular visits with pets, usually dogs, can have positive physical, emotional, and mental beneďŹ ts. Physical beneďŹ ts include lowering blood pressure, lowering heart rate, and reducing overall stress. Emotional beneďŹ ts are reducing anxiety and depression, decreasing loneliness through social interaction with the pets. Holly Schoettler, the Executive Director of Old Main Village got the idea from the companies CEO John Goodman who truly believed in the power of pet therapy. In fact, there is a speciďŹ c program called PALS (Partnering with Animals to Lift Spirits) that promotes animal assisted

interactions in order to provide health beneďŹ ts for the residents. “I have always loved the idea, and the support and encouragement of the owner of the company cemented the idea for me,â€? said Holly. “Living here with no one else is kind of lonesome,â€? said Virginia Lamb a resident of Old Main. “They are good company and entertaining and they’re the best roommates I have ever had. I think that people who have had pets their whole life ďŹ nd it difďŹ cult to live in a place like this without a pet.â€? “Many of our residents have always loved animals, and had them for many years,â€? said Holly. “By bringing an animal into the community that they do not have to personally care for but yet can enjoy at their leisure brings extra added joy to all of the residents.â€? With this idea Holly decided to go ďŹ nd a suitable puppy that she could get trained to be a therapy dog for the

residents of Old Main. She did research on different breeds and a friend of hers had recently gotten a Teddy Bear puppy. “I was looking for even temperament, good with older adults and also hypoallergenic and non - shedding so as not to worry about allergies, said Holly. “I was also looking for a smaller dog that could easily be held and handled by older adults. I have worked closely with the consulting trainer with The Goodman Group, the company that professionally manages Old Main Village, in regards to the training she should receive and classes she should take. And with all of this in mind she found a little Shih Tzu Bichon cross puppy, named her Sophie and brought her to Old Main. Due to the recommendation of a professional dog trainer associated with The Goodman Group, Sophie is taking classes at The Paw. She began with a puppy class, and is now completing

basic obedience training. She will take many classes in order for her to be certiďŹ ed as an ofďŹ cial therapy dog. But becoming an ofďŹ cial therapy dog is no easy task, it takes many different types of training and of course the dog must have the right temperament in order to do the job. Linda Murray is an evaluator for Therapy Dogs International and also works at The Paw as an obedience trainer. Part of her job is to evaluate their temperament and 42 • LIVING 55 PLUS • AUGUST 2016 • Special Advertising Section

test to see if the dogs have the right qualities to be considered as an ofďŹ cial therapy dog. “When we do testing there are 13 different parts to the test,â€? said Linda. “One part is to check their ears, pick up their feet, brush them and pet them. It has to be a one on one situation and then we take them to walk around people with wheel chairs, walkers and crutches.â€? The dogs have to be willing to let strangers touch them, they can’t bark or whine too much, mustn’t be overly attached to their handler to the point they can’t do their job and they have to be able to demonstrate a basic level of obedience. “We simulate all kinds of situations when we do testing, so we try to simulate a hospital or nursing home,â€? said Linda. “We also have to do something where they have to leave a treat on the oor and also leave a treat when someone else is giving them one. This is so they don’t start picking up things in the nursing homes and hospitals that are left on the oor because you never know if it’s got a needle in it or if it’s got a pill in it that someone has accidentally dropped. Who knows what could be in it that could not be good for your dog.â€? But once all of the training is complete, these dogs can perform miracles. “I once had a dog that we would take to the hospital on the third Wednesday of each month, said Linda. “We would just pop into each room that wanted us to go in and hopefully bring a smile to the patient and of course many of the nurses are very happy to see the dogs.â€? She once had a dog that she took there and one of the nurses asked her if she would take him into a room where there was a lady in a coma. The nurse helped her take the ladies hand and put it on the dogs head and helped her move her hand like she was petting the dogs head and in a couple of minutes the lady started ickering her eyes and she got a little smile on her face. “I thought the nurse was going to go through the roof because she was so excited,â€? said Linda. “She went to ďŹ nd the doctor and sure as heck this lady came out of the coma. So these dogs can perform miracles and that is really amazing.â€? Old Main has approached the pet interaction a little differently than in other environments. Sophie is kept in the main ofďŹ ce and residents come to her versus allowing her to run free in

the building. This type of environment has people that absolutely love animals and some that do not really care for them. So by keeping the interactions on a one on one controlled basis, it allows for the best of both worlds. “We joke that she is a rent a puppy for the residents that want to cuddle with her,â€? said Holly. “For example, one of my residents will come to my ofďŹ ce and ask for some Sophie time and they sit together on the love seat out in our lobby. I have found that if I remove myself from the interactions, she (Sophie) calms down and settles in for a good snuggle.â€? Though training to become a therapy dog will take Sophie about a year, she has made a good start at bringing joy and love to the hearts of the residents at Old Main. “She is such a lovely loving friendly dog and really seems to like people a lot,â€? said Carolyn Warning, a resident at Old Main. “It does all of the people around here a lot of good. Some of them like to just be able to see her and hold her and pet her. It gives them a lot of joy and a lot of comfort and she provides all of that. They (pets) understand, they know when you don’t feel good and you can tell by their actions and the way they react, they can tell when you don’t feel good,â€? said Carolyn Warning. “It seems like they give you even more love and attention because they can tell that you need it. There’s just that special bond and they are very intuitive.â€? “I think with any pet, whether a dog or a cat, having that unconditional love brings a sense of peace and comfort to them,â€? said Holly. “With Sophie, having that little warm body to snuggle next to, to have her curl up in their lap as they are holding her, it brings them a relaxing moment of joy and contentment. For the residents at Old Main that have their own individual pets, they can count on that unconditional love that their pet brings to them. And, it ďŹ lls a sense of purpose, as the pets are relying on them to take care of them.â€?

The basics on long-term care insurance V

arious insurance plans protect individuals from financial calamity. Insurance works by requiring policy holders to pay a premium. In the event of an accident or incident, a claim can be filed and the insurance company will reimburse the person for expenses, minus the deductible. Health insurance is one type of insurance that people have to manage their health and well-being. There’s also another, perhaps lesser-known insurance that can prove invaluable. It is called long-term care insurance. Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, is an insurance product that is found primarily in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. LTCI generally covers assisted living needs, home care, hospice care, adult daycare, and other requirements of senior living and/or health management. People who invest in LTCI are planning ahead for the times when they may no longer be able to care for themselves without assistance. LTCI will help offset the ever-rising costs associated with specialized

senior housing and nursing facilities. Traditional healthcare insurance and government-sponsored plans (i.e., Medicare in the United States) will not pay for daily, extended care services. The AARP notes that these other plans may only cover a short stay in a sub-acute rehabilitation center or nursing home, or pay for a limited amount of at-home care. LTCI can help families finance the cost of medical care when all other options will not. LTCI should be looked into early in life, as policies often cost less if purchased when one is younger and in good health. People in poor health or already receiving long-term care services may not qualify for LTCI outright. But there are some workarounds, including buying a limited amount of coverage or coverage at a higher “nonstandard” rate. Some policies do not require medical underwriting, and these may be advantageous to people with preexisting health conditions. When shopping for policies, look into how long LTCI will

Bringing lunch to the office can help men and women diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes avoid unhealthy midday meals.

iabetes and its precursor is a major problem, both in the United States and across the globe. In 2015, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that nearly 50 percent of adults living in the United States have diabetes or prediabetes, a condition marked by higher than normal blood glucose levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reports that the global prevalence of diabetes figures to rise from 8 percent in 2011 to 10 percent by 2030. Preventing diabetes should be a priority for men, women and children, but management must take precedence for the millions of people who have already been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, making healthy food choices is an essential step in preventing or managing diabetes. Making those choices can be difficult for those people who have never before paid much attention to their diets, but the AHA offers the following advice to people dealing with prediabetes or diabetes.

46 • LIVING 55 PLUS • AUGUST 2016 • Special Advertising Section

• Limit foods that may worsen your condition. Some foods, including fiber-rich whole grains and fish like salmon that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, can help people with prediabetes or diabetes. But many more foods must be limited, if not largely ignored. Limit your consumption of sweets and added sugars, which can be found in soda, candy, cakes, and jellies. It’s also good to limit your sodium intake and resist fatty meats like beef and pork. • Document your eating habits. The AHA recommends that people with prediabetes or diabetes maintain a food log to see how certain foods affect their blood glucose levels. Within 60 to 90 minutes of eating, check your blood glucose levels to see how your body reacts to the foods you eat. As your food log becomes more extensive, you will begin to see which foods match up well with your body and which foods you may want to avoid. • Plan your meals. Hectic schedules have derailed many a healthy lifestyle, but people who have been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes do not have the luxury of straying from healthy diets. Plan your meals in advance so your eating schedule is not erratic and your diet includes the right foods, and not just the most convenient foods. Bring lunch and a healthy snack to work with you each day rather than relying on fast food or other potentially unhealthy options in the vicinity of your office.

edication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to properly manage medications can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians’ instructions. Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time. The American Society of HealthSystem Pharmacists estimates that more than 34 percent of senior citizens are prescribed medications by more than one physician, and 72 percent use medications they were prescribed more than six months prior. Many people also have begun “pharmacy shopping” to save money. According to a study published in 2010 in American Nurse Today, 44 percent of men and 57 percent of women older than age 65 take five or more medications per week, with some taking as many as 10. Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips.

• Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-counter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy to any new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize.

• Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication

• Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses throughout the day. Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver.

• Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications.

• Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor. Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse.

oints play vital roles in the human body, forming the connections between bones and facilitating movement. Damage to the joints can be especially painful, and that damage may result from conditions such as osteoarthritis or gout. While not all joint pain is debilitating, the discomfort of joint pain is such that it’s wise for adults to take steps to protect their joints with the hope of preventing joint pain down the road. Recognizing that joint pain can negatively affect quality of life, the Arthritis Foundation offers the following joint protection tips to men and women.

• Forgo fashion with regard to footwear. When women choose their footwear, fashion should not be their top priority. According to the Arthritis Foundation, threeinch heels stress the feet seven times more than one-inch heels and heels put additional stress on knees, possibly increasing women’s risk for osteoarthritis. Though heels may be fashionable, the risk of developing joint pain is not worth making the fashion statement.

• Get some green in your diet. A healthy diet pays numerous dividends, but many may not know that a healthy diet can help prevent joint pain. Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and parsley are high in calcium and can reduce age-related bone loss while also slowing cartilage destruction.

• Shed those extra pounds. If you start including more healthy vegetables in your diet, you might just start to lose a little weight as well. Such weight loss also can help your joints, as the AF notes that every extra pound a person gains puts four times the stress on his or her knees. The AF also notes that research has shown that losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce a person’s risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent.

• Hit the pool. Swimming is a great full-body workout and can be especially helpful to the joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, reducing stress on the joints and minimizing pain as a result. If possible, swimmers already experiencing pain should swim in heated pools, which can help relieve pain. While you can still benefit from swimming

Swimming is a great workout that can alleviate pain and reduce stress on the joints.

in pools with colder temperatures, cold water may not soothe the joints like warm water can.

• Take breaks at work. Many people develop joint pain thanks to their jobs. If you spend all day sitting at a desk or standing on your feet, try to ďŹ nd a greater balance between the two. Joints can grow stiff from sitting all day, while standing throughout your work day can stress the joints. Take a short break every 30 minutes to stand up and walk around if you spend most of your day at a desk. If you stand a lot at your job, stop to sit down for a few minutes once every half hour. Joint pain and aging do not have to go hand in hand. More information about joint paint is available at www.arthritis.org.

'LG \RX NQRZ" A prediabetes diagnosis means you have higher than normal blood glucose levels, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Excessive glucose in the blood can damage the body over time, and those diagnosed with prediabetes are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the majority of people with prediabetes do not have any symptoms. The condition is typically revealed after blood tests indicate blood glucose levels are higher than normal. Being overweight and living an inactive lifestyle are two of the biggest risk factors for prediabetes, and doctors may recommend that men and women 45 and older, especially those who are overweight, be tested for prediabetes. Those who have been diagnosed with prediabetes will not necessarily develop diabetes down the road. In fact, the NIDDK notes that men and women who lose at least 5 to 10 percent of their starting weight can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and may even be able to reverse prediabetes.
