MANKATO MARATHON PRINT The 2014 Mankato Marathon print was designed by artist Chris Sell who also designed the 2012 print. Sell was inspired to design the 5th Annual Mankato Marathon print because he feels the race is one of the most respected athletic and family-oriented events in the state. “In only five years it has grown into a city wide celebration,” he said. The design was meant to pay tribute to not only the athletes that compete but the organizers and businesses that spend months preparing and hosting the event. The design incorporates fall colors and presents the word “Strive” boldly on top. “Not only do athletes strive to meet their personal goals, but the organizer and city official strive to present the best event for the athletes and their families,” Sell said. In the middle of the print you will notice a runner’s hand holding the coveted Mankato Marathon medal that all participants strive to obtain. The medal is the center of the Mankato Marathon experience. It represents the months of hard work and sacrifice. A beautiful autumn scenery lays below the hand to represent the gorgeous landscape the runners will see on that October day. The textural elements for the design were taken from photos of landmarks in Mankato like the limestone walls from the City Center area and the street along the final stretch for the runners. “I think the design is both bold and exciting, just like the athletes that compete,” Sell said. Sell grew up in Mantorville, Minnesota and is the Technologist for Cardiology and Interventional Radiology at Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato. Sell practices the noble art of kendo and dabbles in graphic design. The 2014 Mankato Marathon Print is available for sale at the Mankato Marathon Merchandise booth on Saturday & Sunday. Charity programs In 2014, the Mankato Marathon is striving to give back to the community that has so generously supported our races. This year four charities including Girls on the Run, BackPack Food Program and Project for Teens have been chosen. In addition to having champion runners raising donations, the four programs have potential to raise additional dollars through registrations from runners. Look for the presentation of checks to the charities at 5:00 pm on the Speaker Series Stage.
Camp Sweet Life Camp Sweet Life enhances the lives of young people with Type 1 Diabetes and their families by providing fun opportunities for learning, connecting and sharing. Camp Sweet Life is the first camp for kids with diabetes in Southern Minnesota with the goal to provide outdoor fun for these special boys and girls. Camp Sweet Life Adventures, Inc. also provides seasonal activities, youth development, parental development and other support activities for families with a child that has Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes affects every aspect of a child’s life from the way they eat and sleep to the way they learn and play. Girls on the Run Girls on the Run of Greater Mankato is a life changing, nonprofit prevention program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. They inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experienced-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run combines training for a non-competitive 5k run/walk event with healthy living education. Our programs instill self-esteem through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training — all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and the community. Runners: Deb Bennett, Brian Jones, Dan Kamphoff & Sandra Oachs
The Back Pack Food Program The BackPack Food Program discreetly provides low-income students in kindergarten through sixth grade with packs of nutritious, child-friendly food items to take home on weekends and school breaks so they can return on Monday ready to learn. Current enrollment in the program exceeds 500 students in four Mankato elementary schools— Franklin, Kennedy, Washington and Rosa Parks. As funds become available, additional schools will be added to the program, offering help to all food insecure K-6 students in the greater Mankato area. Runners: Becky Brudwick, Matthew Busch, Eric Hudspith & Molly Norris
Project for Teens Project for Teens (P4T) is a volunteer peer education and service learning program involving high school students from Mankato. Each year, students are trained as peer leaders and are provided with information and tools to address audiences in sixth and eighth grades with messages that promote healthy decision-making around youth risk behaviors. P4T Peer Leaders also provide learning experiences for youth audiences from a range of southern Minnesota communities that attend the annual Youth Health Conference sponsored by the University of Minnesota Extension Service. RUNNER SAFETY Medical Personnel and Aid Stations There are 12 medical aid stations along the marathon course and a medical field station at the finish. They are marked on the map with a first aid symbol. For medical assistance along the course, look for personnel in the red shirts, they will be available to assist you.
Marathon Personnel Communication personnel and head course marshals will have radios and phones to contact emergency personnel quickly. All official marathon committee members will also be available. Look for the individuals in the orange colored shirts.
Police Officers Officers will be located at all major intersections where traffic intersects the course. They will also be patrolling the course. Please keep in mind this is not a closed course. You must still follow the rules of the road.
Volunteers There are nearly 1,000 volunteers on marathon weekend. Most are not associated with the event except for one weekend a year, so understand that they may not have the answers to all of your questions. However, in an emergency, do not hesitate to go to them for assistance as they should know how to get proper help quickly. Volunteers for the marathon can be identified in the bright orange colored shirts.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT SAFETY AND SECURITY We are taking as many precautionary steps as we can to keep the Mankato Marathon safe for everyone involved. With that, we have a couple of important things for you the participants to note: 1. ALL UNNATTENDED BAGS left anywhere on the grounds will be confiscated. 2. The Runner Bag Drop will be heavily monitored and all Mayo Clinic Health System bags used for the Runner Bag drop are subject to search. 3. ONLY Mayo Clinic Health System bags which participants receive at packet pickup will be allowed into the Runner Bag Drop. 4. The Runner Bag Drop is ONLY for 10K, Half and Full Marathon Participants. We are looking forward to a safe event for everyone!
rules of the road • No one is allowed on the course without a properly issued race number. • Help keep the course beautiful by not littering. Respect the property of others while spectating. • No vehicles of any kind are allowed on the course. The course can be crossed only at designated intersections. • Bikers should stay well off the course and watch for spectators as much as for runners. • Spectators must stay clear of the course and off the roads to avoid interfering with the participants. • Hold animals on a short leash. Keep them away from runners and be considerate of others. • Watch your children at all times. There will be thousands of participants and spectators at the events. • Lost Kids / Lost and Found will be located at the Visit Mankato Information Booth.
Headphone Policy Participants are allowed to use headphones and similar devices at this event, but at their own risk. For the safety of all the participants, we strongly encourage a headphone free environment at this race. Participants’ safety is Final Stretch’s highest priority when managing a race. Therefore, if you are wearing headphones or similar devices during the event, please turn them off or remove them when coming to an intersection that is monitored by police or course marshals. They are trying to make this event safe for you and need to communicate to all participants valuable information. Thank you for your cooperation in advance for making this event a safe and enjoyable race for everyone.

SPORT PSYCH TEAM Dr. Cindra Kamphoff, an Associate Professor at Minnesota State Mankato and owner of The Runners Edge, leads a group of trained professionals including sport psychology consultants, psychologists, sport psychologists, counselors and graduate students who will provide participants with mental strategies and mental toughness tips to help runners reach their full potential. Team members will be providing tips to runners at the Expo, at the START, biking with runners (Psychs on Bikes) and in the post race area. Every runner can benefit from a short conversation with a member of the Sport Psych Team. You will feel more mentally prepared, confident and ready to reach your potential. Look for the people in the matching shirts that will say “The Mankato Marathon Sport Psych Team” on the back.
CHEER TEAMS Cheer Teams will cheer you right through the finish line There will be several cheer teams strategically placed along the half marathon and full marathon courses this year. There will be so many smiling faces you will not have a chance to “hit the wall!” Cheer Teams are meant to motivate and inspire runners with cheers, music and encouraging words. Pay attention to which team does the best job. Marathon runners will have a chance to vote at the end of the race. The winning cheer team gets a pizza party donated by Jake’s Stadium Pizza. Look for the following teams: • Back Pack Program • Dance Express • MSU Women’s Track and Field • Holy Rosary Youth Group • Camp Sweet Life • Mankato East Girls Cross Country • Christ the King Lutheran Church • YWCA Girls on the Run • Mankato East Student Council • Mankato YMCA • PFLAG Mankato • Project for Teens • LEEP

TIPS FOR SPECTATORS Make the Most of Your Marathon Weekend There are activities throughout marathon weekend for athletes, friends, and families to enjoy together. But when the horn blows Sunday morning, you only have a few hours to find each other along the course and at the finish line. The easiest way to ensure you and your friends see each other is to plan ahead. Here is some advice for everyone on marathon day.
On the Course • Map out where you will be ahead of time. Check out the great viewing spots on page 32. • Know what each other will be wearing, or carry a sign or balloons. Sometimes it’s easier for runners to spot spectators than the other way around. • Pick a side. Communicate where you will be and watch from the same side of the road. This will help runners see and find you. • Plan for traffic. Allow extra time to get from one viewing spot to another. Get there early and don’t leave if you do not see someone right away. Your friend may be having a really good day or a tough one. • Cheer on the other runners too. It will mean a lot to them! Courtesy of Twin Cities Marathon Spectator Guide
favorite Cheers Clap, shout and show your support for participants-it’s always welcome. Save the “You’re almost there!” cheer until the very end—a few miles is still a long way for someone who has been running for hours. Here are some favorites. • Stay relaxed! • Keep smiling! • You’re looking awesome! • Keep it up! • Running smooth! • Welcome to Mankato! (when appropriate) • You can do it! • Way to go! • Way to wheel! • You rock! • Way to run! • Stay strong! • One stride at a time! • Call out something unique about a runner • Way to focus! (bib#, the color or a logo on their shirt, etc) In addition to shouting your support, bring along cowbells, tambourines, thunder sticks or home-made signs. Many cheering supplies are available from sponsors at the Expo. Please be respectful of private and public property and dispose of your cheering materials appropriately. Courtesy of Twin Cities Marathon Spectator Guide

GREAT VIEWING SPOTS Spectators will naturally find places to watch the runners, but below are some suggested locations for the marathon and half marathon. Please refer to the course map on page 21-22 for binocular icons showing the viewing spots. • • • • • • • • • •
START Line at MSU-M, Parking Lots (Monks Avenue & Stadium Rd) Monks Avenue & 200th Street (2nd time through for marathoners) Hwy 90 & 584th Avenue (marathoners only) Jaycee Park (Pohl Road & Balcerzak Drive) (marathoners only) Lion’s Lake (Homestead Road & Sandpiper Drive) (marathoners only) Hwy 90 & Indian Lake Road (both races) Red Jacket Trail trailhead on Hwy 66 just North of Mount Kato Poplar Street Across from YMCA by Burger King In Sibley Park and all along the Sibley Park River Trail Along Riverfront Drive to the Finish Line
Please beware of road closures for the marathon and half marathon. Review the course maps and plan your route ahead of time. Review all road closures in order to see your runner make it to the finish line. For more information visit www.mankatomarathon.com.

History Mankato is home to over 50 miles of paved trails, more than 600 acres of quality parks, and miles of low-traffic, wide-shouldered country roads; all nestled into the scenic Minnesota River Valley. Combine all that with the vibrant autumn colors of the trees and the cool, crisp air of fall; you couldn’t describe a better place to host a marathon weekend. The idea for a marathon in Mankato was whispered by local runners for a long time. But the seed that was planted by local marathoner, Chris Schull, finally took root with Greater Mankato Growth and the City of Mankato. In 2008, representatives from the Verizon Civic Center, City of Mankato, Greater Mankato Growth, Visit Mankato and Twin Rivers Council for the Arts met to discuss a new event that would be brought to the newly developed Riverfront Park. The event would include arts, music and a marathon. However, through the planning meetings it became evident that an arts event, now known as Arts by the River, and a marathon could not live together because either component could become very large on its own. At that point it was decided that Visit Mankato would take responsibility for figuring out how to put on the marathon. Visit Mankato staff began shopping for a race management company and landed on Final Stretch, Inc. out of Nerstrand, MN. They had a great reputation, were experienced and were interested in split ownership of the event between Visit Mankato and themselves.
Start line from first Mankato Marathon - October 23, 2010.
Planning began in late 2008. For the first couple of years, local marathoners were at the heart of all planning for the marathon. Their feedback was invaluable as a foundation was set. The biggest decisions focused on the course, race distances and date. They decided to make the Mankato Marathon the last marathon in Minnesota where one could qualify for the Boston Marathon. The weekend of October 23, 2010 saw 2,200 runners, almost 1,000 volunteers and an estimated 8,000 spectators for the inaugural Mankato Marathon. The tremendous amount of feedback from the community and runners was overwhelmingly positive; which encouraged ownership that the Mankato Marathon was here to stay. By 2013, the Mankato Marathon had been named Minnesota’s Top Marathon Worth Traveling For by TripAdvisor. A few of the main reasons why the Mankato Marathon earned this title was because of the Sport & Health Expo, the Toddler Trot and the Diaper Dash and the fall colors running along the river. “The list is not about the oldest race. It is about the best reviews, the enjoyment and the overall experience of the people in attendance,” said by TripAdvisor. The marathon has changed and grown year-over-year.
